[lace] Buddy map

As the emails from Arachne go into a public archive (I know it's a long shot but), anyone happening on the archive could read those instructions. My reasons for wanting to be removed are that I'm a pedant and get really stressed, and annoyed if things aren't right, so I'd want my marker on the spot where I live, but then don't want just anyone to be able to find the house. A couple of friends have been caused difficulties by putting a small amount of information about themselves on web sites, so I'm getting increasingly wary about revealing information about myself on the web, however little. When I put myself on the map, I wasn't aware that it was linked to the Google maps. If I had been, I wouldn't have put myself on it. [lace] Identity Recognition - was Buddy Map
Hi All, I have happily put my name and location on the Buddy Map - but I must also be either very trusting or extremely stupid!!!(Please don't answer that one!) I have my name, address, phone number and eMail address all over the place - internet, libraries, adverts in shops etc - in an attempt to publicise my adults and children's classes - I even have photos of lace and students (with permission of those photographed, I might add) in the local hospitals, along with an advert. So far, I haven't had any unpleasant messages/encounters, apart from the usual spam stuff , some of which comes to the computer whatever you do to try to avoid it.I wouldn't go so far as to tell anyone my Bankers or my PINs, but I do think it extremely unlikely that anyone would home in on my information - but of course, that's what everyone thinks until they are a victim ... However, I still think I'll be leaving all the info all over the place - at least it may help to make the classes more viable - but I may also take out insurance against identity fraud/theft. Re: [lace] RE:judging
Hi All, It seems that Devon is probably comparing two contrasting things - the Lace Guild proficiency assessmemts are just that - proficiency assessments, so people have to know what they are supposed to be capable of doing for each level. The competitions are also just that - competitions, where we are competing for 'best in show' , a red/gold/silver ribbon. Honourable mention etc - so I think in a lot of cases, especially where sometimes the judges of lace classes have absolutely no idea of the difficulty of whatever lace is shown, or the proficiency of an entrant, that judge will just go for whatever pleases him/her the most!I can remember one County Show I went to, many years ago, where a beautifully made and displayed Miss Channer's Mat, came third to a torchon parasol, very small, and a Bedfordshire bookmark! It subsequently caused an outcry in a lot of the local classes and organisations, but any grumbling was too late, and wouldn't have achieved anything! I have since been of the opinion that, instead of hoping for judges who make lace, and know what to look for, we just enter our lace as an advertisement that lace is alive and well, and out there are classes waiting for the interested onlooker to join. [lace] Buddy map / privacy
> When I put myself on the map, I wasn't aware that it was linked to the > Google maps. If I had been, I wouldn't have put myself on it. The personal data is in fact less "visible" by Google than on ordinary pages. To explain I need to become quite technical. The list with personal information is encoded in scripts. Search engines scan the text portions of the HTML pages, not the scripts. Proof: look for "lacemakers of the world guestbook" check out the cache and you'll see an empty list. The current implementation even better hides the list from search engines than previously on buddymapping.com Proof: drop guestbook from the search and check the cache for buddymapping, the list with members does appear. The functions to present the data on the right spot on the map are executed by browsers on PCs, not by a Google server. Proof: tell your browser to work off line, you only get messages "we don't have maps at this zoom level for this region" as the maps are retrieved from the google server, but the bubbles still appear. This offline experiment unearthes another bug though )-: I might have solved the bug that obstructed the mailto links for Internet Explorer completely, when working offline the email address of the wrong person is shown. It should show none, not because the google server can't be reached, but because the server of the lacefairy website too can't be reached. Re: [lace] Buddy map
Jean, you can be on the map wothout telling your excact adress the city is enough. I understand you very well nowadays one must be careful. Yesterday here a new play was shown, in a way fitting to your feeling. A man came to Europe from a poor country to a family which paid for him small sums during his childhood as an orphan and bring them lots of trouble. This is a play but . Since my mailing address -- which has been E911ed to point at my house very precisely -- is available from several public sources, burying map-viewing instructions in an archive does not materially increase my hazard. Note that in my sig, I don't even say which lake -- my sig would turn up many, many times before any specific post. By the way, saying "Bike Trails" pinpoints me very precisely -- there's only one set anywhere near Fort Wayne; people drive up from Indianapolis to use them. But we do have a greenway -- Heritage Trail -- cutting through the Old Boys' Camp mountain-bike trails.) -- Joy Beeson http://joybeeson.home.comcast.net/ http://roughsewing.home.comcast.net/ http://n3f.home.comcast.net/ -- Writers' Exchange http://www.timeswrsw.com/craig/cam/ (local weather) west of Fort Wayne, Indiana, U.S.A. where the snow is still thick, but the roads are open.
