[lace] My Toender Lace
Dear Friends, Today as I watched the latest on our dreadful Victorian bush fires, I was able to finally complete my piece of Toender lace which I had commenced on 14 Jan 2007!! I have sent the final photos to Julian who will no doubt have them up on the website in a day or two. I do hope you get as much pleasure from them as I did in working this beautiful piece. Now if anyone has any ideas on how I could successfully get it to Princes Mary of Denmark Tasmania, I'd be most grateful to hear them. This evening I have wound a hundred or so pairs of bobbins in the finest black silk from Eva in Spain and at last have commenced the legendary Miss Channer's Mat. This silk came on a large spool and seems to me to be about equal to Pipers 2/20. I have reduced the pricking to about 2/3 the original size and as far as possible am converting the mat from Floral Bucks Point to Chantilly. Hello David, First of all congratulations on finishing this mammoth task. I look forward to see the photos on Julian's site. As regard getting it to the Crown Princes Mary of Danmark, if you're serious about this try this website: www.crownprincecouple.dk/ There is a contact button, and when you click on it there is postal address and an official address, and even a contact tel number, but no email address. I too have the pattern for Miss Channer's Mat, but nowhere near even thinking about starting this. I've always found reflected the easiest way to deal with heaps of e-mail -- because I seldom have time to read a whole digest at one sitting, and lose my place if I try to read one in installments. When I have a folder full of individual e-mails, I can delete each one as it's read, and always know where I'm at. And sometimes I keep a message to read later, if it calls for more attention than I can spare at the moment. [lace] emails from lace
Hi all, Just a comment on email programs and lace It has been my experience that Microsoft Outlook and also Outlook Express lets you direct incoming mail and outgoing mail by the names of who you are sending/receiving to or by subject line words such as [lace] I take advantage of those and my mail sits in the specific folders until I read, delete or flag with a marker to return to it for further processing. It makes sorting the mail very nice. Check out your programs and look for sorting incoming and outgoing mail. It might also be found under rules and alerts (MS Outlook). Good luck. [lace] Re: [lace-chat] CROCHET HOOKS
There used to be TWO sets of sizes for British crochet hooks. The bigger ones for use with knitting yarns were the same as the old British knitting needle sizes, The steel hooks for use with finer crochet cottons had a different set of sizes although the two sets of numbering did overlap a bit. see: http://www.crochettreasures.com/conversion.htm Also someone mentioned engineering wire gauges - the old British knitting needle/crochet hooks are actually (imperial) Standard Wire Gauge or SWG, whilst the old American sizes are American Wire Gauge or AWG, aslo known as Brown Sharp. They are both indirect sizes which mean that the higher the number the finer the wire/needle/hook. See: http://www.colomar.com/Shavano/conductor.html I don't know what system the old British steel hooks followed. Whilst I agree with most of what Joy says, if the finished size really matters you need to make a tension square, the same as you would for knitting. If you Google crochet hook conversion you'll find lots of charts including http://www.vintage-crafts-patterns-designs.com/crochet-hook.html same if you want to find knitting needle conversion charts. My USA#8 crochet hook is 1.5mm metric -- but you don't need no steenking conversion chart. Just try hooks on your selected thread until you find one that the thread just fills. When you use an oversize hook to loosen your tension, you don't need the same hook the designer used -- your tension isn't his tension. The only time you need to pay attention to the arbitrary numbers on the hooks is when you switch from one hook to another and want the two hooks to match. By Imperial, do you mean inches or wire gauge? Either way, there is another conversion table here  http://www.jewelrymaking-beads-library.com/wire-gauge.html  I can't remember how wire gauge is calculated, but it's something to do with how long a length of wire can be made out of a certain weight of metal. Personally, on the rare occasions I've tried to knit something and my mum hasn't got any metric needles of the right size, I just ask my dad as he's an engineering-y sort of person ;o)  Helen in Dorset --- On Thu, 12/2/09, viviennewal...@aol.com viviennewal...@aol.com wrote: From: viviennewal...@aol.com viviennewal...@aol.com Subject: [lace-chat] CROCHET HOOKS To: lace-chat@arachne.com Cc: l...@arachne.com Date: Thursday, 12 February, 2009, 9:09 AM Thank you so much for all the help. So I think I will treat myself to some new hooks. Bye the way Brenda's Threads for Lace has been great sorting out the threads on my old crochet patterns to find modern equivalents. Perhaps it should be called threads for anything! Best wishes, Vivienne To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace-chat y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Re: [lace-chat] CROCHET HOOKS
Thank you all. Many of the conversion charts didn't have imperial only metric But Sue and another lady, I think Jean found two that did. But I had already gone out and bought 6 new ones :-( Still I was surprised how cheap they were. You are a great bunch of ladies. Nothing seems to much trouble for you all. [lace-chat] CROCHET HOOKS
The Canadian/UK seem to be the old imperial sizes at least they are when I look at the few I've got!! Yes, they are! We even had for a while conversion gauges made of metal or plastic with graduated holes in them listing the US, CAN and MM sizes on them. CAN equaled BRITISH. I have a few still, somewhere. If you would like one, let me know by sending me your address. Re: [lace-chat] CROCHET HOOKS
