[lace] Books on demand

2010-06-22 Thread Alex Stillwell
Dear Arachnids

I have been planning to reprint my torchon book and following the letters
about Books on Demand I traced one of the machines to Blackwells, 100 Charing
Cross Rad, London, UK and went to visit them. The operator was very helpful
and I am tentatively thinking about using them to reprint my book. If there
are any current or budding lace authors out there I would be happy to share my
experiences.

Keep lacemaking

[lace] Cutting off lace

2010-06-22 Thread Elizabeth Ligeti
That lace looks nice, Mark. I love the idea of tallies between the blocks.
I haven't seen that done before in a torchon edge.

As for cutting off and starting something different - I do it all the
time! :)
I have a little travel pillow with a small roller, and always have something
on the go.
However, I may not get the pillow out for another 6 months or so, so I pin a
copy of the working diagram on the front, - and that is also a help when
explaining to people what I am doing. They can see the lines in the diagram,
and can (sometimes!) see how I am following the pattern, and where I am at.

Then I get bored with it, - or find a prettier pattern, and cut it off, and
start something fresh.

I had all these little bits of lace from the travel pillow - and wound up
trimming "Miss Mouse's dresses" on a quilt for my little granddaughter!!
Now I can be a right Snob, and say that "My Granddaughter has Real lace on
her quilt"!! :)

Put the piece away, - and you will find it is Just the piece you want, later
on!!! :)

Regards from Liz in cold, wintery Melbourne, Oz.

I do envy you your trip to Idrija. I would love to have seen that.

As to ironing and starching bobbin lace: I never do it. I think that a
bobbin lace is in the best condition it can possibly be on the very minute you
take all thel pins out. Nothing can improve on that.

[lace] new lacemakers

2010-06-22 Thread Janice Blair
Last Saturday I taught what was supposed to be a continuation bobbin lace class
at my guild, but we decided to throw it open to new people and we advertised it
locally near the library where we meet. We got five new people trying their
hand at it and I think we have four new lacemakers. The other lady really only
came to accompany her friend, but who knows maybe she will come again. I heard
from three of the beginners, one had come to the end of the torchon bookmark on
Sunday and wanted to know how to finish it. I was going to demonstrate that
but the class took longer than expected.

It was a difficult class for beginners as we started with a torchon ground
(tcpintc) diamond and then went into cloth stitch (CTC) and whole stitch (CTCT)
fans divided by torchon ground. Most of them managed to get two or three
repeats done during the class time. I had lots of help from other guild
members who sat alongside the beginners and a number of our members also made
the bookmark as their continuation class. One person paid her dues and we hope
to see the others back again next month, especially as we rented them our kits
with a returnable deposit.

When we first arrived at the library we had a panic as they were holding a book
sale and all our tables were out on the grass covered with books. The library
staff were very good and scoured the library for tables we could use for the
class and then they nicely returned our rent money for the day. We had about
24 people to accommodate and we were sat around about 8 tables of different
sizes and heights and the air conditioning had not been turned on. Saturday
topped 90 degrees with humidity. You could have poured me out of the room in
the afternoon!

[lace] Bangle sizes

These tend to be available and cheaper in fashion accessory shops and on
market stalls - I used to buy them in ones and twos from Springetts
when they were general suppliers, at something like 12p each, then went
to get my daughter fitted out with school trousers and found our
friendly Indian shop owner (who always bemoaned the fact that doing her
degree in art stopped her from learning the traditional embroidery
skills from her mother - she just didn't have time) was selling them in
bulk packs, much cheaper! I think when I was on The Lace Guild's craft
fairs sub-committee and we did the "Five Gold Rings" pattern pack, I
bought packs of ?15 bangles from Claires (a fashion accessory shop in
the UK) much cheaper than I would have been able to get them through the
lace suppliers, which was how we managed to do the pattern packs within
a very tight budget. This is going back a few years, though.

Generally the bangles come in two sizes - the 70mm diameter size are far
more common than the smaller ones, but you may find packs with both
sizes in. It depends whether you want to do one bangle or ten, and
whether you have time to go and hunt round the shops. (Or get a friendly
teenager to look for you - they will be in the shops they tend to go
in!).

This is true, but sometimes it's nice for new people to have the fun of
discussing something themselves on the list. No one has to reply if they are
tired of the topic or for any other reason. That might also be a timely

Perhaps the same would apply as one uses on Hardanger, which is to place

More subtly and as a general comment; some things do well face down, pinned

I have never had pins and needles rust when used this way, as they are wet

[lace] Brazilian Lace Edging

2010-06-22 Thread Tatman
This past Saturday was another hot and muggy Grande Levee in Vandalia, IL.
It was only a one day event this year and not state supported(thanks to
ex-Governor Blago[inexplicitive]). Luckily they got local donations and
support to put on the event. There are several around the state that have
to find funding.

Anyhoo..that¹s another topicthe breeze and being in the
shade made it bearable and there was a good crowd despite the 95 degree F.
We all had a good time visiting with our reenactor friends who we haven't
seen for a while. Chewed the fat and all that. One of my sister's
reenactor friends shot this picture of me working on my bolster pillow

http://tat-man.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Tatman_at_the_pillow.jpg

I was working on the Brazilian edging that was presented by Christa of
Heartland Lace Guild and I took on the challenge of working it up. It is a
typical torchon edging and it works out nicely

http://tat-man.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Brazilian_edging.jpg

This was an edging that has been on this pillow for quite some time. It is
worked with DMC pearl cotton size 12. I got 3 repeats done while at the
show. I needed the pillow for another project I wanted to work on and I was
getting bored with the edging anyways. Imagine that!!! Me getting bored!
I really do think I have adult ADD. Or just can't settle on one project
long enough, so have to jump to something new. Hence my collection of
pillows with works in progress and other unfinished projects of all
needlework genre. So I finished a repeat and cut the bobbins off. Some
visitors happen to be watching me and I just went *snip* and they gasped.
HEHE It was like you thought I neutered it! I told them I was bored with
it and wanted something new. They understood. But I liked their reaction!
Don't know what I am going to do with it. The footside is 14 inches long.
Can't put it on a pillow case, but could go on the end of a tea towel. It
might gather up into a nice flower. Any other ideas??

I will be working a large 14 inch oval doily on the bolster pillow next
using some handspun flax/linen in white that I purchased a few years ago at
another heritage demonstration. I will be taking this with me on our
vacation. Don't have a workable travel pillow, so will haul this monster.
I tend to pack too many projects when going on vacation. Then I find I
don't really work much on them because I am busy hiking, running, enjoying
nature. But I do try to work on my projects while having coffee in the
morning while the rest of the campers are still sleeping. ;)

Thanks for letting me share my weekend with you,

[lace] Sealed Storage of Laces

It seems the Glad oven bags that we use in Australia have tiny holes

can ascertain with no problems at all.

[lace] visit to Brugge

2010-06-22 Thread nicky.hoewener-townsend
Have just returned from a few days in Brugge - hence my DH and I weren't at
Wymondham Lace day on Saturday - we were over there to celebrate my youngest
sons Graduation with an MA in European Economics from the College of Europe
in Brugge (Nick Clegg also graduated from here). Needless to say we did get
time for visiting various museums and the Kantcentrum, all of which we
thoroughly enjoyed. The chocolate drinks and strawberry waffles were also
rather yummy.

On route home we stopped off at the new lace museum in Calais which, if you
get a chance to visit, I would highly recommend. We spent 3 hours looking
round and it really wasn't enough time. Part of the permanent exhibition was
dedicated to handmade lace and there were some exquisite pieces on display
and all beautifully displayed too. The machine lace section was fascinating
too.

Two things let the museum down - signposting to find the museum on Rue du
Commerce / Quai du Commerce. Calais has an interesting one way system around
the back roads and we only came across two signs for the museum, one of
which directed us the wrong way down the road supposedly in the direction
of the museum car park - which is on the opposite side of the canal to the
musem, with access via a footbridge. However, there is another car & coach
park - right next to the museum, but it wasn't signposted! The museum shop
as far as I was concerned was a great disappointment. Most of the postcards
were views of Calais, a few lace related ones were formerly sold at the
Museum of Beau Arts (I purchased them from there years ago), the rest was
exhorbitant tat (ie frilly red knickers purses). There were quite a few
books which were abysmally displayed, in fact it looked as if the shelving
would collapse if you dared to touch them, and despite all my searching
which included crawling along to look at books dumped on the floor, I
couldn't find a basic book in any language about the museum and the
permanent exhibition.

However, I will be going back sometime for a better look around, preferably
for a couple of days and hopefully the shop will have improved. The cafe
food, we had sandwiches, (a baguette stuffed with salad, cheese and ham) was
tasty, filling and reasonably priced, half was wrapped up for later
consumption.

Oh quick mention of an excellent book shop in Brugge, on a corner along
Dijver close to the College of Europe and the Groeninge Museum - the owner
is one of the new directors(?) involved with the work going on at
Kantcentrum the lace books were in the basment, but a fabulous selection.
Also roughly opposite the Groeninge Museum by the canal is a very very large
map of Brugge in lace (not hand made of course).

[lace] New question

2010-06-22 Thread Karen Zammit Manduca
Good morning all from sunny but windy Malta.

I was in Idrija (Slovenia) last weekend for the opening of an exhibition of
18 costumes that all have lace on them, the culmination of a Leonardo da
Vinci European Union project that I participated in. It was held this
weekend to coincide with the annual lace festival of Idrija.

Apart from the costumes, there was lots of beautiful lace to see and I was
amazed at the high standard of work on display, even that made by the
youngest of children (8/9 years), but apparently lace is part of the school
curriculum for girls as well as boys - once I got to know that it wasn't
surprising any more.

Discussions about the work and its quality, and how it was achieved led to
thinking that the work must be ironed and starched to look so good. Would
any of you know about this? What are the general thoughts about ironing and
starching lace? Here in Malta, it is not always considered good practise to
iron a new piece of lace because it is felt that ironing "flattens" the
work, meaning that the three-dimensional effect of certain elements (e.g.
leaf tallies) is lost.

Regards,
Karen.

Hi All

Just to let you all know that I think everyone who downloaded the

I´m trying to find out why so many people are having problems getting

So please click the link which says ´Return to Poole Bobbin Lace
