[lace] In Praise of Antique Lace Bobbin Makers
I have got that out of my system this afternoon, perhaps a few minor changes if and when I review it. I have it in PDF form 340KB and if you want to read my prattle I will send it to you. Drop me a note. PS. I write mostly for myself, to sort out my thoughts and feelings about a topic. To discover just how much I know or do not know about a topic. RE: [lace] Copyright etc.
I'm with Brian. When I first thought about starting bobbin lace, I asked a lacemaker for a pricking of a Springett snake. She (probably quite rightly) said no, it was copyrighted. But it seemed a bit tough to me at the time. I didn't want a copy of the whole book, just the famous "snake", which is ideal for a beginner to get the hang of cross and twist, and is often used on "try me" pillows at demonstrations. We were at a demonstration at the time - she on bobbin lace, I was tatting, before I had even started bobbin lace. Several years later, I of course bought copies of the Springett books, and have since shared the snake pricking with several others, who in turn have gone on to purchase the books. Had I not shared the snake pricking with them, they may not have known about the books, and how good they are. I am about to write an essay "In Praise of Antique Bobbin Makers". It was inspired by this thread (No... you makers are not antiques!) I just thought that the information on this thread will be really valuable valuable for the "Springetts" of 100 years time. There is a wealth of practical art on you pillows that someone will sure want to study in the future. I notice one correspondent said that she had the "first" pair of bobbin a particular maker created. Merrilyn Finlay (West Australia) has my first pair... they were more like pokers than bobbins, I tried to get them back off her, but NO she would hold me to ransom at some future date. :( From Brian and Jean Cooranbong. Re: [lace] RE:bobbin makers
Re Valerie Dunsmore I had a bit of correspondence with her on her technique, in fact I believe I asked her if she would mind if I did a few bobbins that way. It ended up she was teaching some one else. I did make a couple for myself which I am sure I must have given away. It is hard yakka (as we say in Australia) I can understand why she gave up.. I think because of Arthritis in her hands or some thing (I apologies if I have it wrong...) but they are fantastic creations. Love them. - Original Message - From: "Helen Bell" To: Sent: Saturday, October 02, 2010 1:09 AM Subject: [lace] RE:bobbin makers Valerie Dunsmore (Australia). It's been many years since I saw her last or have seen one of her bobbins, but she did some commemoratives I think for the RMLG one year. [lace] Copyright etc.
I do not think that Sherry should have even thought to offer a long and explanatory apology/explanation about her cartoon characters. I think we all get far too worked up about copyright, and blatant money making from someone else's work is clearly wrong; but serious copyright breakers have very simple means to get around copyright and still look as if it is the real thing. We are just innocents in this game. We are all made to feel so guilty about this copyright issue that we dare not breathe without thinking of potential issues involved. I make amateur movies.. shown only to say 30 or 40 club members one evening a month, they vary between three and 15 minutes depending on the competition that night (no prizes except a certificate) The last time I went to pay a fee for use of a commercial piece of music for a 3 minute 30 secs film I was quoted $350 (AUD). I used the piece and did not pay the royalty. I felt comfortable with my choice, I thought the fee was exploitative, had they quoted me $50 Aud I would have paid up. I think we have to be comfortable with the choices we make regard to copyright, and in turn we should not be exploitative in what we do with other people creations, but "one for yourself and not make any money from it" seems OK by me and does not require any apology. Let people think what they like about you... if you are OK with your decisions... go with them. Enjoy your hobby and get rid of the huge guilt that commercial enterprises place upon us. [lace] Copywrite and cartoon bobbins.
I just received an email about cartoon characters being copy writed and to be careful. I know the cartoon characters are copywited. I just want to state that I do not sell these bobbins...so there is no profit in me painting them. I only painted what you see in the picture on my website under the bobbinlace page. They were all for my own use. I was taking a class on Russian Lace Making and I had I don't know how many bobbins right now "Plain Jane" unattractive bobbins. I wanted to paint something on them...and I wanted the bobbins to all go together sorta speak. So I just sat and painted cartoon characters on them. I only paint bobbins now when I feel like it. When I use to paint bobbins to sell (Mostly Celtic Themed) I decided it wasn't worth the money for me to sit at my table for hours on end and putting a kink in my neck and back painting bobbins for sale. So I don't do it any more. I have painted bobibns for a few different lace day events. And now I haven't painted a bobbin in months. Halloween is coming and I have been thinking of painting a bobbin for Halloween for myself. But really the cartoon bobbins were for me...they weren't sold and I have had pictures of those bobbins on my website for almost 10 years. [lace] Bobbin Makers and Painters
I originally posted this to lace-chat, but Janice Blair suggested I really meant to it post to lace, so here goes.. Yes, a very interesting thread as I am seeing names very new to me. Who remembers Harvey Helmke? Carolyn Gritzmaker? or Diane Miller? Harvey was the king of rings and his finish was silky smooth. He also made beautiful embroidery tools. Sadly he passed away about 10 years ago. Carolyn was very creative. She once carved a small, closed hand for the bobbin tail as a thank you for 'a helping hand'. Carolyn retired about 15 years ago. And Diane was another painter of delicate flowers. Diane moved from her cottage in the watercress fields and seems to have dropped out of sight. [lace] Lace Day
I was just reminded that today, October 1st is National Lacemaking Day in the US. I did my celebrating without realising it as I just ate a delicious chocolate gooey brownie for lunch and earlier I copied a pricking and have put it on my pillow to start working asap. It is a Christmas ornament as I realised I needed to make one for my British club craft and bake sale in November. We auction items for charity and my lace usually brings the highest price of the evening. I will be away in November so must get it done before our October meeting so I can give it to the President for later. Happy National Lace Day Janice p.s. [lace] Re: bobbin makers
I am sure the makers of most of my bobbins have been mentioned. I don't have them cataloged or ID to know who made what bobbin, unfortunately, shame on me. But I do have a few bobbins made by a friend of mine who does the same heritage reenactments we do. He is an excellent wood carver and wanted to try turning some bobbins. So I gave him a pattern shape to go by and he did just fine. His work isn't well finished as some of the expert makers, but his bobbins are quite usable(and I have used them). A bit on the clunky sidewe will call them thumpers. One of my precious bobbins he gave me was a George Washington bobbin(as he calls it). That is, it is off a fallen limb of one of the historical trees from the Mt. Vernon property(or might be from Washington's boyhood home, can't remember him telling me). It is a tiny bobbin(still chunky though!) and the wood is yellowish in color(sugar maple???) I can't completely authenticate this. It is just what he has told me. He has made a couple of these. My wood carving friend also was a dear friend of my bobbin lace teacher who did the same reenactments. She told him that his bobbins weren't quite up to snuff and that he needs to keep trying to finish them better. Threads might snag on them. They constantly would nudge each other with wry comments. What are friends for?! Of course her husband made all her bobbins and they were exquisitely made and tailored just for her. She was spoiled by her husband's bobbins. I happen to be lucky to own two pair that she let me have. Great for doing tallies and sewings. The bobbins my friend makes will be bobbins that I always will know who made them because they are uniquely his work and he is a friend of mine and will be a momento from him. -- Mark, aka Tatman website: http://www.tat-man.net blog: http://tat-man.net/blog Magic Thread Shop: http://www.tat-man.net/tatterville/tatshop/tatshop.html email: tat...@tat-man.net Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/tatmantats - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Dear Arachnes, I am enjoying this thread, and think I have now have a good Autumn project to catalogue my bobbins now the wet weather is setting in! I'm not sure I have seen mention of another Cambridgeshire Bobbin Maker, my closest: Margaret & David Davies, in March: nice delicate bobbins in wood with a very distinctive deep grooved neck and almost hour glass tail. David is often to be seen at lace fairs demonstrating turning. They have a website. http://www.mdlacebobbins.co.uk/ Also Brian Goodwin, still very active as far as I know. http://www.briangoodwin.co.uk/index.html Stephen & Hilary Pearce have retired, but made wonderful ornate carved bobbins. There is another painter of bobbins that used to come to Herts lace days - very art deco / nouveau designs, the name I can never remember, but much enjoy. I have a couple of lovely painted bobbins, again bought many years ago at a Herts lace day, floral on bone with the initials MT - any ideas? One is an Acorn bobbin, the other is an old Cockermouth one. I also have some painted wood and also unusual Corian bobbins from a supplier based near Beaconsfield, Bucks which my mother gave me; she found them in the phone book and went to visit. Well over a decade ago. I thought they might have been Woburn Bobbins but am not sure, anyone recognise the description? Quite chunky so good for gimps and Russian Lace.
