[lace] Yardage
Hi Arachnids When I started writing my Bucks books I was determined to show the lace as competed items. Until then the Bucks books had mainly samples, a few motifs and the occasional fan and collar and I felt they did not do our lace justice. Consequently I have become involved in yardage. The lower edge of the half slip in my geometrical book and now the edging round the christening gown underdress (34 repeats) and the front panel of its overdress (even more and still going). Fortunately I enjoy working many repeats as much as I enjoy puzzling over a new piece. Don't even think about the speed, just enjoy making your lace and it will grow. Re: [lace] In defence of speed
Robin said something like it's the work, not the finished thing that is the satisfaction. Me too. That's why I'd like to be able to work more quickly, so I can get a bigger fix of solving the problems, which is the pleasure of lacemaking ahead of other arts and crafts for me. That's also probably why I enjoy teaching so much; that is problem solving all the time. Either sorting out why people have gone wrong, helping them make the corrections and not make the mistakes again or working out the best ways to help each person to understand what they will be doing next; it's pure pleasure. When I have a row of cloth stitch to do before I need to select the optimum place to do a sewing, or several rows before I start a braid stitch, if I can do the same quality of work more quickly why wouldn't I want to. It's the sewing, or the perfect start in the perfect place which is where the challenge is, and that's where I get most satisfaction. The lace I make is used purely for teaching purposes; I have none on display. My addiction is in the doing, and I also have many cut-off unfinished pieces kept as samples where I have learnt all I am going to and I'm neither enjoying the work or the prospect of the finished item. Another aspect of speed which hasn't been mentioned is the difficulties which teachers experience trying to design a piece of lace for a class. We often work a sample several times (and inflict it on our 'tame' students) trying to get some idea how long it might take 'average' lacemaker to do the piece. It is one of the most difficult design tasks trying to estimate how many of the necessary techniques will they have time to do in the day, the weekend or worst of all, the 3 hours of a Lace Guild Convention workshop, and thus decide how complex a piece can be. How many of those tricky moves can I get near the start, so everyone can do them in class. How straightforward can I make the last third because that's the bit that will sort 'average' from 'a bit faster'. How detailed do I need to make the accompanying notes so everyone has a chance of finishing at home? But my heart sinks when I have one of the Lacemakers described by Helen(?) who tension and tweak every thread at every stitch as I know I will go home frustrated at how little they were able to achieve even if they don't They may be quite content in their work, so I have to respect that, but surely they'd get even more pleasure (as well as value for money!) if they could work just a tiddy bit faster. [lace] Lace Identification Booklet Hapsburg veil
Susan, and all The wedding photo of Marjorie Merriweather Post's daughter Adelaide Brevoort Close (1908-1998) was taken at the Hillwood estate in Washington, DC. although her wedding to Thomas Tim Welles Durant on January 19, 1927 took place in New York City. Adelaide wore a short dress with a long train, so the only place the veil was not supported was on her head, where it was fastened with orange blossoms at the sides of the head. The Hillwood exhibition features a short silent movie taken at the wedding, so we can really see how the veil was used. --- It is amazing how well the veil survived both that and the original fastening with a diamond brooch at Princess Stephanie's wedding. There are small tears, but nothing very serious. So far, we have not seen a close-up wedding photo that shows the veil at Princess Stephanie's wedding in 1881. The photo of MM Post's daughter wearing the veil in 1927 makes me wonder if the picture was taken at Mar-A-Lago, her former Palm Beach home now owned by The Donald? [lace] Exciting News
G'day Friends, Had to pop down to Geelong tonight (100km) for the opening of the National Scarf Festival at the Wool Museum. My Toender Point Ground Lace scarf in Vietnamese silk won the Thematic Category (Rhythm of Life). It took about 4 months to make and was 2200 hours' work. It's up for sale at AUS $2000 - wonder if it will go? The organizers had gone round the Op Shops and bought up a heap of old LP records which they then bent at right angles. Each of the 250 or so scarves were then draped over a record which hung from the ceiling on a slender cord, to show it off to its best advantage. I was duly interviewed by the Geelong Advertiser newspaper and photos were taken. Not sure whether it will be in tomorrow's or Monday's issue. I didn't even know what the prize would be, but it turned out to be $100 cash plus a certificate which had been personalized on a CD label that was then stuck on to an old 45rpm EP record. Mine happened to be the David Bowie hit Amsterdam - appropriate some might say. I believe the exhibition runs till some time in August and would be well worth a visit if you can. Hi Bev, Thank you for your quick response. The colours are a delight even though it is difficult to see any detail. It also shows the hard work that always takes place behind the scenes at these shindigs, people do not always appreciate that especially if they have never been involved with exhibitions/competitions. Hopefully more detailed photographs will be forthcoming now the exhibition has opened. [lace] Hapsburg veil kudos to David
Hello All! Thank you Karen for posting additional info about the wedding photo featuring the veil. Now I'll have to Google to find out more about Hillwood! I'm only familiar with MM Post's lifestyle/legacy in Palm Beach Florida her daughter Dina Merrill. Mar-A-Lago is not far from the Flagler Museum with the lace room. For all the public *sniping* about the rich famous, many have collected donated beautiful things that we all now enjoy because of their foresight. The motifs are exquisite my feeble attempts at needlelace won't ever get to 44x51 per inch--half the scale of the Hapsburg. Egad. David--how lovely. Congratulations! You are an over-achiever I say that in a *nice* way!! Thanks Bev for posting the link to photos. I'm waiting to see more happy to be part of the cheering section!
