Re: [lace] What is it?

2013-01-29 Thread scotlace
When I looked at the picture my first reaction was that is was a kind of
needle holder for an embroiderer using several colours. By having needles
threaded in the required colours it was quick and easy to switch.

Modern holders are flat and, I think, magnetic. I've only seen them in
photographs but they are designed for a quick change from one colour to
another.

That translation seems to imply it was a scissor type of needle holder. The
points of the needles seem to pushed in to a piece on the scissors, and to
get one out - one opens the scissors, and removes a needle.

Very odd!!!

[lace] Uploading photo/or not

2013-01-29 Thread Sue
Here we go again,
I have been trying to upload a photo of my completed lace this morning and
failing miserably. Well almost true, I can upload it to Flickr but not into
the Arachne sets, even though I went from within my Arachne set which is why I
am frustrated and have given up for now. I had access into my other groups
using my yahoo signing, so have signed out of that but its still not working
for me.So now I need advice to either work my way into Flickr Arachne
files to Hurwitzend or else some lovely person to upload it for me if I send
them a photo, Please.

I spent a small amount of last night working on my strip on the travel pillow
as its the only piece I have part worked now, but now need to decide what my
next project will be.

Dorset Uk,
Dull, rainy again, with some flooding near by, again. Roll on spring and can
we have some warmth and sunshine please?

Fw: [lace] Re: pattern would you use? Colour

2013-01-29 Thread Sue
I just got very sneeky The young bride to be was telling me how close her
wedding was so I was able to ask a few questions and so I know know she has an
ivory dress, so now my question is, What threads come in the best ivory.
Preference is silk or maybe cotton. I like Gutterman silk, so do any of you
know if they do a good ivory? I have never bought ivory mostly using white,
occasionally thicker threads in colours. I can change the sizes up or down
to get the right grid for the thread once I work out what might be best. I
have not yet decided what to do as I have been concentrating on completing my
lady picture and clearing away all the threads from the bobbins. I will go
through my books looking for something which might make a good choice over the
next week or so I expect.

Hello Sue and everyone
Just some thoughts - Make white lace then tie appropriate colour ribbon on the
lace somewhere, when you do know? If the bride has chosen off-white, sew on a
tiny off-white button 'for luck' ?

[lace] Re: Linen Christening Gown

2013-01-29 Thread Susan Reishus
sure it is possible for someone to hand sew the garment
itself with linen
thread...

There is a miscommunication.  I believe you asked about using
linen thread to sew the garment (in whatever way), and there was no indication
on my part to hand sew the garment with linen thread (nor did it cross my
mind).  I suggested cotton or silk to do the job is ideal, and if you wanted
to use linen (mention of wanting to have it be 'all' linen), then perhaps hand
sewing on the lace if desired would be possible, but that cotton or silk would
do it more invisibly and easier as linen can tend to be temperamental and
break.  My background is haute couture, French Heirloom and all forms of
needlework, so was sharing sewing insights from practical esthetic, to
timeless ease with best results (of which sewing machines do very well).
Best,
Susan Reishus

[lace] Re: Linen Christening Gown

2013-01-29 Thread lacelady
In a past discussion, it was mentioned that cotton and linen are plant products
while silk is an animal product. The cotton thread would be more compatible
with the linen fabric than silk thread, on a long term basic. For a one-use
item, it wouldn't matter much, but a christening gown is apt to be passed down
through several generations before it gets worn out.

I don't want to leave my warm house.
