[lace] Pinterest site

2013-10-30 Thread Laurie Waters
OK - my LaceNews Pinterest site is not about pins for making lace. It is a
social internet site - think of it as a series of bulletin boards where you
that you might pin photos too. Except that the board is a folder on the
internet site, and the 'pin' is a picture from some website that you post
with an explanation in that folder. Click on the pin and it takes you to
the original website. I have found most of the various lace organizations,
and at the bottom of the page is a number of boards that include lace/book
suppliers by country. I'm fairly confident after about a month's searching
that I've found most of these websites, but can always use feedback.

Many of the sites also have facebook pages, twitter feeds, flickr pages,
etc., so when I find those I include them in the description of the original
pin.

This all is a permanent, fairly easy to maintain modern take on the
traditional 'link' page. I currently have 59 boards and 914 pin, adding
more every day.

Re: [lace] Books - Import Impact on Price

2013-10-30 Thread Nancy Neff
Hi Jeri,

I paid import duty on books one time when I brought in several
hundred dollars worth of books through customs, even though they were all
different titles: my total was over the personal exemption limit, which at the
time was $200, so I paid duty on the amount over $200. (My luggage was VERY
heavy.)  Just recently I brought about $1500 worth of stuff back, but paid no
duty because the personal exemption limit is now up to $1000 or something like
that, and about $1100 of what I'd bought was antique lace (antiques aren't
subject to duty), so the total of stuff that wasn't duty-free was less than
the personal exemption limit. The list of stuff that is duty-free is fairly
short actually, and books ain't on it.

Two things to glean from this:
1)
Import duty is owed on books if they are being brought in for resale, or if
the total worth of them is over the personal exemption allowance.
2)  Be sure
to always get a certificate of authenticity and age if you buy antique lace
overseas--it has to be over 100 years old to be duty-free, and customs
inspectors are not going to be able to judge the age of lace.

Bottom line:
always buy lace :-).

I find that when looking for books, the best place for me to start at is
Google search and then "shopping." Then I go from there. Sometimes I will
put in an alert on either Google or eBay for an item. I have found some
good deals that way. Shopping around seems to work for me. Some gently
used books are just fine. New books may be more of a problem.

Re: [lace] Pin update- still seeking

2013-10-30 Thread Kim Davis
I have had similar issues with wire, and checked in with a wire maker. I
found out that the core wire measurement is what is used. For example, a
supa wire which is a copper core, at least one coat of color, and then a
coat of silver is still gauged at the copper core size. Two or more
coatings definitely change the diameter of fine wires. I wonder if
something similar could happen in pin manufacturing? Certainly, it could
just be the usual factors like inconsistent manufacture, supplier
variation, etc.

One thing I've noticed in these posts about inflated prices is references

1. Direct purchase, gift, or a reviewer's copy is mailed to me.
2. Ordered via local independent book shop, shipped to them..
3. Ordered via American lace book suppliers, shipped to them..
4. Hand carried in luggage and cleared through Customs.

They are still a mystery as I don't know what they are used for. They were in

Re: [lace] Books

2013-10-30 Thread Nancy Neff
Hi Alex and fellow spiders,

Actually there's a bit of confusion about the
shipping etc. charges for the copies of Alex's book already on ebay:  if
the buyer is in the US, the shipping charges are only $3.43 for economy
shipping (probably Media shipping which can take forever but doesn't cost
much).  The basic price of $67.95 probably covers the cost of the original
book at a dealer's discount from the author, plus shipping and import charges
from the UK, plus a moderate profit.  It still seems a little high, but not
as high as at least one other dealer will be selling it for I'll bet.

The
high shipping and import charges that Alex saw are because she was accessing
the ebay site from the UK and they were charges for shipping the book back to
the UK.  It would certainly make no sense for anyone in the UK to buy it from
a seller outside the UK.

I still prefer to buy from the original source
when possible because I prefer the profit to go to the author rather than be
split between an author and a dealer, but I realize this is not always
convenient for people, plus we need to support our dealers so they are there
to supply us with books and threads and things that it is not so easy to get
ourselves. I have seen some books currently in print for higher prices on
ebay, however, than one can get through amazon.com or even from full-price
retailers, so it pays to be cautious.

Also, I have been told that there has
been some indication of knock-off copies of Alex's books being sold for
a LOT less, and those should be avoided too! That is in violation of the
author's copyright, and NO profits are going to the author.  So only buy from
reputable dealers or the author, and remember that, if some deal is too good
to be true, it probably isn't.

Sorry for such a long post, but I think
these are issues important to the lace community.

[lace] Books and suppliers list

2013-10-30 Thread Lyn Bailey
There was once a list of suppliers on the Arachne website. It was removed
due to obsolescence, and rightly so. However, this would be a good place to
list suppliers of all sorts globally, and self publishers so they can be
found. Thus the space on the digest would be preserved. Or even references
to other places that list such things. All suppliers are not alike in their
inventory, and sometimes books can be found one place but not another.
Perhaps it would be easiest to contact the webmistress and let her know who
is selling what, what the website is, and all that. Since the website
hasn't been updated in 3 years, a refurbishing might be in order. Perhaps
also it is time to list where the websites, facebook pages and yahoo
groups are that talk about lace.

[lace] Lace Magazines

On Monday I received two magazines - the Nov./Dec. issue of Piecework
& the Fall 2013 issue of I.O.L.I. Bulletin.
Now I'm waiting for the UK Lace one to arrive.

I realized that the October 2012 issue (#148) had an article about a
Halloween quilt made with 12 lace motifs applied to the pumpkins.
Included were the patterns for an owl, a witch & a vulture.
I was looking forward to seeing the other patterns published, so I'm
wondering if there will be some more patterns in the next issue?
But do we have to wait for another 2 years for all the others?

The way the digest works is that it sends out messages once the 'file'
reaches a certain size. It was created in the days when most people were
paying by the second for downloads. Some still are, which is one of the
reasons we are asked to trim our posts. If you were to even attempt to
list every author and supplier you would probably exceed this limit and
may end up with no room for the messages themselves!

Technology moves on, and I expect the membership of Arachne has been
fairly stable for the last few years - meanwhile we are seeing many new
lacemakers on Facebook (there are several pages devoted to lacemakers, I
follow two of them), who are asking questions about suppliers. Again the
no advertising rule applies, but it is easy to find a link to someone's
web page when that supplier is also in the group following the page.

By putting such a list on Arachne, I think you would be preaching to the
converted - most of us know who the reliable suppliers are.

Jeri has done sterling work in the past by posting reviews of new books
on Arachne. You will also find reviews in most of the major lace
organisation journals, and if you join the organisation in your own
country you can usually borrow books from their library for the cost of
postage. The journals also carry some advertising for suppliers, and
there are usually links to suppliers' pages from the organisations'
websites.

Again, these organisations would be too many to list in terms of
"cluttering up the digest", but if someone wants to know which
organisations have members in their country, they can always ask a
specific question here!

Finally, I will mention that The Lace Guild has recently brought a new
book out. But as I'm 'connected', I'm waiting for someone who isn't on
the Exec to comment on it!

[lace] books

2013-10-30 Thread alexstillwell
Hi Arachnids

As a self-publishing author I give a discount to suppliers. However, the
supplier has to pay carriage, which on heavy books, is substantial. Also when
sending outside the EU there are usually import duties for them to pay and
local sales tax. This will probably increase the price they pay per book to
over the original retail price. On top of that the supplier has to make a
profit. This has to be take into account when buying from suppliers. Even so,
we have all seen books being sold on ebay at ridiculous prices.

Take care everyone

Hi Arachnids

I know there is an embargo on advertising ones own books but this email is not
about advertising but about warning lacemakers.

My book ‘All about making – Floral Bucks Point Lace’ has only been
available since 21 October 2013 and there is already one available on ebay at
of $67.95. It also has an additional shipping charge of $18.93 plus and Import
charge of $22.88 making a total of $109.76 (£68.45p).

Do NOT pay such highly inflated prices. My book is £28.50 and is available
from well known suppliers, there are already three who have it in stock, or
myself, for less.

Cathy Barley is preparing her needle lace book for reprinting and is also
concerned about this. Are there any more authors who have experienced this
problem?

Perhaps Arachne could have a link at the end of each Digest to a list of
suppliers who have books available at sensible prices. this suggestion is not
about advertising and gaining sales. Its intention is to save lacemakers from
this scam.

Most lace authors never make enough on sales of their books to cover their
time spent writing it. Certainly my latest book has taken 7 years and I have
worked on the manuscript several days per week and on the lace most days. When
I finished my book on geometrical Bucks I could not find a publisher and had
to self-publish. A list of book suppliers at the end of each Digest should
including authors who are self-publishing to make it easier for lacemakers to
access their books. This may encourage others to self-publish and we will have
more books available. I am happy to share my experiences of self-publishing
with any budding authors.

I am interested in the responses this will generate.

Happy lacemaking to all

Alex

[lace] brass lace pins & a Waulking song‏

2013-10-30 Thread Jean Nathan
Now here's dedication for you. I lent my micrometer to Eve Morton, who measured
the diameters of all her mixed up pins to get them sorted in sizes again.
