Yesterday I was in Etten-Leur to spent some time with Sister Judith and to
show her how the work on my Withof piano runner is progressing.

I do so hope that we also get to see a picture of the Withof piano runner when
it is finished ,and perhaps even , maybe, some pictures on how the runner is
progressing.

Those of us who have been on the Lace list a bit longer will remember this
delightfull U tube video .
I did not look it up, but the thread may still be in the Arachne archives
The children in this video, as Anneke has told us, are the anthousiastic
Lacemaking pyjama clad grand children of Anneke Reijs of the province of
Limburg in the Netherlands.
For those a bit newer to the list I wish to add, that Anneke, is a student
and friend of sister Judith de Kreijger from the Netherlands .
Sr. Judith developed the Withof laces.(Withof is the Name of Sr. Judith's
convent )
Anneke did a superb job of documenting Sr. Judith's work in three Manuals of
Sluis Withof and Duchesse Laces
These manuals may still be available for anyone interested in them.
As that Anneke is on the Arachne Lace list, she herself will answer those
who may express an interested in purchasing the manuals .
The Lace group I am a member of were privileged to have Anneke visit with us
on the monthly Laceday on several occasions.

[lace] Lace needle Lace Pillow

2009-01-11 Thread Hendrika van Kooten
-A friend who is a superb needlelacer but is not on the Lace list send me
the following -e-mail .

I obtained a used copy of a book on needle lace, a great book by Nenia
Livesay. Needle lace used to be worked on a needle lace pillow so you can use
both hands and the author recommends using one. I have to hold it with one
hand. There is a picutre in this old book. I have searched for one, have
looked on the Lacis website and have not found any such thing. It is different
than a bobbin lace pillow. Have you ever heard of a needlelace pillow in your
years of doing lace?

If I can't find such a thing, I may try to make one up to see if it helps when
I start another project.

-Replies to forward to my friend will be appreciated
-Thanks in advance

Hi Agnes ,
Thank you for your friendly groetjes
the Simcoe county Lacemakers have two members of Dutch origin
( I am the older one ! )
the younger one is Johanna who hails from Overijsel
Another Lacemaker of Dutch origin is on our mailing list
but does not attend Lacedays
I was born in Bilthoven ( gemeente de Bilt ) emigrated to
Canada in 1951 with my family.
In the beginning after emigration my parents kept contact with other
families who had emigrated from deBilt - Bilthoven resulting in my marriage
to someone who used to live across the street from me in Bilthoven
I knew about Lacemakeing from a neighbor lady who was Belgian ,
but did not take up the art until about 25 yrs ago here in Canada.
Presently I am taking care of my cabin fever (due to Ontario wintry
weather

conditions ) with some bobbinlacemaking

[lace] Dancing bobbinlacers on You Tube

2008-02-19 Thread Hendrika van Kooten
After seeing the grand's of Anneke Reijs doing the Bobbinlace pajama dance on
You tube I decided to share a little lace
story with the list
For 11 years I attended International Lacecamp on Manitoulin Island Canada
,which is a good six hours + drive from where I live
( or alteratively four hours driving and two on a ferryboat )
In 2002 Several Lacemakers who also regularly attend International Lacecamp,
and who live within a reasonable distance from myself, decided to get
together for Lacemaking ,other than once a year at International Lacecamp
,this resulted in the formation of the Simcoe County Lacemakers, and therefor
I sign off my Arachne postings Member of Simcoe County Lacemakers Simcoe
County township of Springwater Canada
In 2006 an e-mail arrived from Anneke Reijs who lives in the province of
Limburg in the Nethelands, inquiring if I lived near a town where she and her
DH intended to spend the summer, which we do.
Soon more e-mails were exchanged and when Anneke and her husb.came to spend
the summer in Simcoe County we enjoyed a most pleasant visit,
Anneke is a student and friend of sister Judith de Kreijger and the
author of the Sluis Withof Duchesse Lace Manuals,
b.t.w. Anneke's DH told methat in the days Anneke was writing the
manuals she spend so much time wtth sister Judith for to gather material for
the manuals, he began to wonder if Anneke had entered the convent. g
It is of note that Sister Judith celebrated her 92 nd birthday in 2007
Anneke's webpage and information on the Sluis Withof Duchesse manuals can be
found at http://www.lokk.nl click on links andWebsites van LOKK
kringen / Leden
While vacationing in Ontario Canada in 2006, Anneke attended the Simcoe County
Lacemakers Laceday and gave a very informative talk on Sluis Withof Duchese
Laces ,and in 2007 while in Canada, she attended another Simcoe County
Lacemakers Laceday , held to celebrate the 5th anneversary of the Simcoe
County Lacemakers .
How nice that being on Arachne has woven a web of friendship between Anneke
Reijs in the Netherlands and the Simcoe County Lacemakers in Ontario Canada
Hoping to see you at Laceday again Anneke, meanwhile whenever possible, keep
those grandchildren , bobbinlacing and dancing .

[lace] OIDFA cancellation

2008-02-08 Thread Hendrika van Kooten
 Tamara Cancellation,

Whoa there Tamara , I read your cancelation posting, are you sure you
are not a bit hasty in cancelling .

I mostly lurk, but could not help going to the keyboard to tell you ( and
I suppose that goes for others faced with full house notices, as well ) that
here are more hotels in Groningen than the ones listed ,in the IODFA
registration packet, not to mention BB's ( there is even a BB in a
windmill in Groningen ! )and guest houses ( pensions ) cottages etc, etc.
just click in on all these options and surf and surf and surf and you will
find something

When some of the Simcoe County Lacemakers could not afford the Hotel fee's in
Montreal we found more affordable accommodation by surfing

For the other hotels in Groningen, you can get information and bookings
sometimes better prices, on line in many many languages , including Polish

b.t.w. Groningen tourist information may also be a good resource.

I so dearly wish I could go, as my aunt of about my age , whom I attended
high school with, and a number of cousins live in a suburb of Groningen

Jo is correct to tell you distances are quite different in the Netherlands
than in North America e.g. the next largest city near Groningen is the
city of Leeuwarden ,for North American idea's, only a hop skip and a jump, 58
km. to be exact, from Groningen with good public transportation

Understandable finances are a very large consideration ,however i.m.h.o. in
your haste to cancel you may possibly not have explored all your options and
miss, what promises to be a great European Lace experience .

Hi Nelleke ,

Whereas Lacemaker Lia Baumeister -Jonker of Amsterdam, has made the
historical Lace for the bedlinnens of the bedcloset ( bedstee) of het huis

[lace] Lace Buttons

2007-02-07 Thread Hendrika van Kooten
Inquiry
Recently I spoke to a gentleman about an matter unrelated to Lace ( actually
it pertained to woodturning ) this gentleman mentioned that his wife was a
Button Collector.
I mentioned that the public very likely viewed the Hobby of button collecting
as unusual as Lacemaking.
As a follow up, the Lady collector send me the following information ;

The button collecting Club began in 1960 and is a very friendly group of
ladies in the 50 plus age range right up to 91. Buttons are art in miniature,
signposts to the evolution of fashion and society and I really enjoy learning
of their history, and those who manufactured them. It's a great hobby.

Now the button collector , who mentioned that she is familiar with crochet
buttons ,and myself are rather curious if there are, or if anyone has ever
heard of, Lace buttons ?

[lace] One more option securing bobbins

2007-01-25 Thread Hendrika van Kooten
Anna, one of our Lacemakers, uses a two and a half inch wide tensor
bandage, stretching and pinning it with berry pins where necessary, to hold
down the bobbins for transporting her pillow
Different, but works very well for her,and the kind of pillow and bobbins
she uses .

 Hi All

decided to tell him that I am a lacemaker.
He was fascinated and we had quite a lengthy discussion :) He made the
comment, and you aren't wearing any lace. I was wishing that I had
something to show him and have decided from now on, I will carry a lace
trimmed hanky in my purse so that I can pull it out on other similar
 occasions!

 Jane

 Hi
When in Brugge I bought a post card with a picture of the lovely weathered
old hands of a
Lacemaker on a pillow making Lace, I have carried this post card in my
purse for more than 16 years , it became rather tattered, so I put it in
a laminating pouch.
I show this postcard to people whenever the topic of Lacemaking comes
up,for to give them an idea what Lacemaking is about.
I also carry a bobbin in my purse, for folks to touch and handle, especially
children .
I lost the bobbin in the driveway of someone's home once, where a 4year
old found it ,took it to her mother and said , Nicole's grandma sews with
this

[lace] Self directed Learning

2005-11-25 Thread Hendrika van Kooten
Hello
The little lace group I am a member of is open to visitors on our monthly
Lace day, and it especially pleases us to welcome those who are interested
in learning bobbin lace .
We have a give a try pillow with bobbins wound with thread handy for those
wishing to try their hand at their first C T C 's
When new folks are really interested, the conversation invariably turns to
what instruction publications and or book ( s ) we would recommend for self
directed learning ( no teachers in our area ! ) we advise them to the
best of our ability
Leafing through the book catalogues is rather undauting for a
beginner and we as a small lace group are not always familiar with the wide
array of books and publications out there.
I thought it would be interesting to find out what useful publications /
books members of the list, would suggest or recommend, and why.
Thanks

[lace] Re: lace dowager

2005-10-23 Thread Hendrika van Kooten
 Hello Spiders

I finally looked up the word dowager in my English-Dutch dictionary, it
only
gave a French word, so I turned to the French-Dutch dictinary. It said
something like widow of respectable family or something like that.
  .

 Jo Falkink

 Jo,
This may not be of great interest to others on the list but the word for
Dowager in the Language of the Netherlands is , Douairière and widow
of respectable family appears to be a respectable simple short
interpretation / explanation.
