I was a programmer/designer for 42 years mostly at AT and Bell Labs
and I watched the bobbin lace my mother did (she was a pre-med grad) for
years - she started in 1976 - but I didn't start lace myself until a
little over 2 years ago when I found a local group and started with
them.  I was a math major in college and I also write Scottish Country
dances.  I see my love of figures and patterns (abstract algebra was my
favorite subject) as all related to each of these areas of interest.

I’m not a computer programmer, just a computer user, but I’ve used drawing
programs to manipulate straight grid laces (torchon) into curved shapes since
the mid 1980s - IIRC it was 1984 when I first played around like that.

For some early examples of what I could do, and the hardware/software used
have a look at

Re: [lace] computer programmers and lace

2018-05-27 Thread H M Clarke
I started out as a programmer in 1983 (I did a sandwich degree in maths and
that was my year ‘in industry’). I had been introduced to lacemaking in the
1970s since one of my grandmas made lace (btw, I’m still tracking down
information to send to Suffolk).

I worked in the defence industry using languages specific to our computers. One
(Fixpac) was a low level language where we were directly manipulating the bits
and bytes - space was at a premium in those days. The other (Coral) was a
higher level language which compiled down to Fixpac (both were proprietary to
my then employer, Ferranti, as was the hardware). This was probably about as
close as you could get to a lacemaking equivalent. However at no point did I
associate one with the other.

To me the link is logic (one of my strengths, and weaknesses) with the ability
to also be creative in how you manipulated the component parts to produce
something powerful. Isn’t this also the basis of the early machines for making
lace?

IMHO, to see lace within a computer programme would be unlikely unless you were
programming something similar - weaving perhaps? For me, you would probably
need to go back to when the lacemaking machines were being conceived and have
somebody who made lace by hand and then saw how to translate the steps into a
mechanised version.

As usual, just my C$0.02.

Hi Sharon,

It wasn't quite as early as 1984, but in the early 1990s I was aware of how
much lace and software seemed to require the same skills, and how much they
were alike, lace being essentially binary in action. The software language
I was using then happened to be C, but it's been the same for any other
language I've used, even graphical languages.

(BTW, if you are choosing a language for your character, it would be much
better to choose the language depending on what business the character is
in.)

It is often forgotten that one of the earliest computer programmers was a
woman - Ada Lovelace, daughter of Lord Byron - who in the 1840s did much of
the work that led to Charles Babbage's *Analytical Engine*, widely
considered to be the first computer.
Also Jacquard cards (basically computer punch cards) were in use on
lace-making machines as early as 1834 .

Hello Patricia

Have you tried system restore?
When you swtich the computer on, you get a screen with shortcuts etc.
There should be a search bar (mine is bottom left). In it type system
restore, and a list of programmes comes up incl. system restore or some
similar name.
Click on it and on the screen you'll get open system restore.
Next screen says something like: Restore system files and settings.
There should be a list of several restore points.
Choose one and click on next, and it will say Confirm your restore point.
Cliock Finish and the computer should go back to an earlier point in time.
This may solve the problem.

[lace] computer aided lace drafting

2006-02-28 Thread Teresa Thomas
I am usually a lurker here. I enjoy reading everyones posts. So please
forgive me.
For now I have a big question about computer aided lace drafting
programs. I found 3 programs. After reading past posts and many personal
web sites it had looked like Lace 2000 would be absolutely wonderful. I
have recently found out that ILSoft is not supporting nor updating this
software. Nor are they answering emails with inquires and questions
about updates, support or patches for know bugs. The version they are
selling is an 2002 version, four years old. To me this looks like an
orphan program that ILSoft is still collecting money on. The information
on there web site about a down loadable Demo as well as patches and
updates at The Lace Studio are all bogus. These issues are a problem
for me. I did just read Ruth Budge post. It is quite a coincidence that
I had planed to cover this issue with an inquiry here.
The other 2 programs that I found are Easy Lace and Knipling. Any feed
back from users about these programs? At least these companys appear to
be keeping current and updated. Please give me feed back about the pros
and cons for Easy Lace and Knipling software.

A big thank you to everyone.

RE: [lace] computer aided lace drafting

2006-02-28 Thread Ruth Budge
Theresa, I'll grant you that the ILSoft website needs some attention, but I
don't agree that the information is bogus.

There was a huge upheaval at ILSoft last year...which has left the
owner/programmer of Lace 2000 trying to do everything in his company by
himself - and he is not a lacemaker. And, because of its relatively small
turnover, Lace 2000 is a minor part of his business, and gets an accordingly
minor part of his attention.

I know that he used a work-experience student to update his website...and
obviously that's where the confusion arose about referring people to The
Lace Studio website. The Lace Studio is no more, so that's why the links
don't lead anywhere. I have written to England about that matter.

However, the programme IS still supported - and as I've repeatedly said, all
anyone has to do is email me for help and support. I will also send you
privately a demo version of the programme.

As for updates...the version of the programme being sold is the 2002
version, and includes any patches which were needed by owners of earlier
versions of the programme. The version which needed patches has not been
sold for several years now. Having said that, I only know of one small
programming error, and I do have a solution for that, and have sent it to
several Arachnes in the last couple of weeks - it is free of charge to any
owners of the programme.

Anything I say about Easy Lace (for which I wrote the instruction book,
similar to the one I wrote for Lace 2000) or Knipling will not be seen as
unbiased, because of my involvement with Lace 2000.

Sufficient to say that, long before I had any involvement with the company
at all, I had tried the others, and chose Lace Designer Gold (which was the
forerunner of Lace 2000) for myself. Since then I have tried the others
again, and still I keep coming back to Lace 2000.

Both Easy Lace and Knipling are far more technical in nature, and from my
observations of Easy Lace users both in Australia and England, it appears to
be less intuitive and harder to come to terms with...the language is more
difficult for lacemakers to relate to.

I will say one more thing - my direct involvement with ILSoft now goes back
about 6 years...and most of the work I've done in that time is on a purely
voluntary basis. So I'm not trying to sell you on Lace 2000 in order to
make money - in fact, as I've also said before, I'm only allowed to sell
within Australia, so it does not affect me whether anyone anywhere else in
the world buys Lace 2000 or not.

Subject: [lace] computer aided lace drafting

I am usually a lurker here. I enjoy reading everyones posts. So please
forgive me.
For now I have a big question about computer aided lace drafting programs. I
found 3 programs. After reading past posts and many personal web sites it
had looked like Lace 2000 would be absolutely wonderful. I have recently
found out that ILSoft is not supporting nor updating this software. Nor are
they answering emails with inquires and questions about updates, support or
patches for know bugs. The version they are selling is an 2002 version, four
years old. To me this looks like an orphan program that ILSoft is still
collecting money on. The information on there web site about a down loadable
Demo as well as patches and updates at The Lace Studio are all bogus.
These issues are a problem for me. I did just read Ruth Budge post. It is
quite a coincidence that I had planed to cover this issue with an inquiry
here.
The other 2 programs that I found are Easy Lace and Knipling. Any feed back
from users about these programs? At least these companys appear to be
keeping current and updated. Please give me feed back about the pros and
cons for Easy Lace and Knipling software.
A big thank you to everyone.

Hello everybody!

I am having loads of trouble with my computer and can only get online once a
day, if I am lucky. 'They' say it could be weeks before it is sorted out
properly. However, I am still intending to participate in Secret Pal etc, but
please don't be worried if I can't post things online as quickly as I should.

If anyone needs me my telephone number is 01594 510519 (UK). If I have real
problems, I will try to get in touch with Brenda by phone.

Thank you.

[lace] Computer programs

2005-01-26 Thread Christine Lardner
Hi, I'm thinking of treating myself to a computer program to assist in
designing and drawing patterns. Does any one out there have any experience
of these? I have downloaded the demo for Lace 2000, and that seems quite
easy to use. Are there any others?
Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation

LOL!

Well, we got this one!

Now, I would have been tearing my hair out too - only I'm not a grandma so
sending e-mail doesn't USUALLY leave me in this kind of a quandary - but
then you realized that!

It sounds as if there could conceivably be a problem with how your e-mail
is set up or functioning - definitely get your husband on it when he gets
home.

I have tried twice to send this to 'lace chat' - hope I will have better
luck
this time on 'lace'. Sorry for posting to the wrong list.

Oh Maxine I just love it!

I rushed upstairs to use my laptop when I saw my third attempt to send a
reply
to lace appear on the screen downstairs - typedl out my reply - it went
into
the 'outbox' and there it still remains! Run downstairs again to the
study to
use my husband's computer (good job he's gone off to golf or he would be
using
it himself) and try to send this one.

I've just about had enough of these silly games this morning, wasting
valuable
lacemaking time. I'm off to start stitching before I tear my hair out! I
will try later on to send the message on the laptop.

Oh Elaine ! I'm so sorry to hear you had that trouble!
I've spent the last three days fretting over my computer,
which fortunately never completely died. In the meantime, I
had a chance to back up all my data and to print out my
address book. The problems aren't resolved yet, but I HAVE
finally gotten a good response from my computer's tech
department, and help is on the way.

Because there are so many nasty worms and viruses out there
these days, I just thought I'd suggest to everyone that you
do the same TODAY... you may be very glad you did (although
I hope you won't ever have need for it!).

I use 'knipling' (the producer is nearly a neighbour) and I can add, that this
program is able do fill a ground with patterns. It offers a 'library' where you
may create and store your own ground.

 pricking into a technical drawing.

I keep thinking about using a computer, but still haven't made up my mind
which way to go. I've got CorelDraw, but until someone tells me how to
make
the page full size and put a dot on it (and I used to teach computing!!)
just to get me started, I don't seem to have time to start exploring that.
It's all very well saying make a small elipse and then copy it if you
already know how to make a small elipse with this program.

On the other hand, I'm quite happy with graph paper and pencil.

I also managed to turn Steph's pre-prepared grids of dots pale blue with
Paint Shop Pro so I can see my black dots and markings more easily, but
can't remember how I got it perfect. Since the first one, the grids have
been distorted when I open them, so I need to concentrate and write down
how
to do it. Particularly useful for non-45 degree grids.

Hello lacefriends,
In my opinion one can use every fine design-Software you have or belong to
your PC.
I visited a class where the teacher used Coral-Draw, I was handicaped it was
for Windows and I am a Apple-user. But I managed it but I got the impression
that it is to much work. If you are a teacher and needed dozens of copies
than it is perhaps worth. I find it easier to use grids when you will do
something with laces who have one. But if you, like me design free pattern
than you couldn't use Knipling or Easy-lace. Than you need a professional
design-programm and/or a painting board.

[lace] Computer Programs

2003-08-31 Thread W N Lafferty
Liz Asks

Spiders - this has made me think - how many of you who design use computer programs
 and which do
you use

My DH is a retired surveyor and we have a (once very expenseive, now
useless to him) survey software package based on a 3 dimensional
grid. Two dimensions are perfect for drawing up lace! I drew myself
up a grid of dots which I copy for each new pattern, then edit each
dot I want to a different colour and layer in the program until I have
enough for one repeat. I then get rid of all the base dots, copy and
rotate to my heart's content and print out at any scale I want to.

There is a sample on my website - the Cooma Kiss hanky edge.
I have no intention of copyrighting it, everyone is welcome to copy it,
use it, print it elsewhere (eg in newsletters), share it around. I respect
copyright for those who are trying to earn some money from their
books, but I am unlikely to design anything worth putting in books!
