Hello All! Several years ago, I saw glass bobbins--all colors, like crayons in
a Crayola box. Last year, I purchased a few now need a few more. Does
anyone know who makes them or where they are available? Many thanks.

Indeed Martin Tuffnell (Bill's son) still runs the business. He also has
wonderful christmas ornaments as well and is well worth seeing. He is
usually at Cranmore Park, Harrogate Lace Day and will be at Wolds Lace Day
at Hessle East Yorkshire UK on the 14th November as well as usually
attending the Christmas Fair at Lincoln, etc. etc. etc.,

I have some similar bobbins made by Malcolm Fowler. I never saw any glass
bobbins made by the Millers, Jean, as you say they made (make?) lovely painted
bone bobbins. I suspect the seller had the box already and put it with the
bobbins to make it more attractive, and look more like a genuine set.

The glass bobbins on ebay, attributed to Diane Miller, look to me like Bill
Tuffnell (UK) bobbins. Bill Tuffnell used to make lovely glass bobbins (with
beads to match). I have watched him make bead filled glass bobbins and have
personally bought several pairs of clear and coloured, worry doll filled (as
on ebay) and oil filled sparkly bobbins. I believe family still run the glass
business and still make bobbins and beads.

RE: [lace] Glass Bobbins on ebay - Diane Miller?

2009-10-29 Thread Elizabeth Pass
Hello Jean,

It's just the box that has a Brian and Diane Miller 'label' in it.

Diane painted bone bobbins and miniature paintings but Brian made a variety
of items, pen holders, paperweights etc where he encapsulated leaves,
flowers, even dandelion clocks in some sort of clear acrylic. They were
sold in good quality presentation boxes and the Millers took great care
about displaying the item. These glass bobbins are just in the box for safe
keeping, I should think.

I've got a couple of their boxes but what's in them now was made by me.

[lace] Glass Bobbins on ebay - Diane Miller?

2009-10-29 Thread Elizabeth Ligeti
Well, the bobbins don't appear to be a Set as I understand it.
The tops and tails indicate - to me - that they were made by different makers,
for a start.
There does not seem to be any continuity between them - Pairs of bobbins, yes,
but not a set.

I don't know anything about the bobbin makers, but maybe the box refers to
some other bobbins, and has just been used for this sale!

Re: [lace] Glass Bobbins

2005-06-30 Thread Carol Adkinson
Hi BarbE et al,

I always have lots of Malcolm's glass bobbins on my pillow, and they are
remarkably sturdy! I have in the past fifteen years or so only broken two.
The first was at a Suffolk Lace Day, when a lady saw me winding them, and
paused to pick one up. She promptly dropped it on a parquet floor, and it
broke into three pieces - not the least bit concerned, she looked at the
pieces on the floor, said My - they don't bounce, do they! and stomped
off.I was so amazed, I didn't take off after her and deck her!
However, Malcolm was at the Lace Day, and mended the bobbin - it was one
with two little tiny red bobbins inside, and although there is a scorch mark
where it was mended, I am still delighted with it, and use it a lot.

The other breakage was my fault. You know how it is - I was coming
downstairs, with lots of stuff in my arms, and too lazy to make more than
one journey upstairs!I tripped coming downstairs, and fell the last
three/four steps - the gear went everywhere, and the little box containing
all the bobbins opened, and the bobbins went everywhere - but miraculously,
only one bobbin of the four or five pairs of glass bobbins in the box broke!
But that one broke into lots of little pieces, so no chance of that one
being repaired.

So - don't be afraid to use the bobbins - they sound lovely on a pillow, and
look beautiful too.

Carol - in Suffolk UK.

2005-06-30 Thread robinlace
The first glass bobbins I got were a gift (don't know who made them,
but I've seen them for sale by Holly van Sciver). I'd never have
bought them, being afraid they'd break too easily, but I wanted to use
my gift so I put them on a pillow. I now have maybe a dozen glassies.
When I packed to go to Arachne '98 (a grand convention of Arachneans in
Nottingham, organized by Pat Hallam and Margaret Allen), I over-stuffed
the bobbin box and broke two bobbins. One was wood and the other
glass. Another time, I sat on my bobbin roll. It only had a few
bobbins in it (whew!!!), but I broke one wood and one glass.

If you drop them onto cement or other very hard flooring, they break
more readily than wood or bone. Other than that, though, they seem
just as sturdy. I've only broken the two glassies, but have broken
other woods.

Hi All,

I bought a pair of these bobbins on ebay a few weeks ago. I found them a
little chunky (diameter 3/8ths inch) and somewhat longer (5.25 inches
without spangle) than the other midlands bobbins that I use - they'll
be fine for me for gimp though. You may need to take this into
consideration if you like your bobbins to be compatible size-wise.

They were quickly despatched and very well packaged.

Hi Helen !

I also was smitten with the glass bobbin fever a few years ago! Like Margot, I
loved the sound of the bobbins. But one day, four hit the floor at the same
time and broke (can't remember the details of that disaster!) Lucky for me,
the maker promised to mend any I broke, so I had them mended, and then promptly
broke another one. Since then, I've been discouraged about using them, AND
have pretty much moved to continental bobbins anyway.

So the short answer to your question is that these bobbins aren't any more
expensive than others, but they are more fragile, so the expense will be in
breakage.

Clay said So the short answer to your question is that these bobbins aren't

But on the other hand, I have probably a dozen glass bobbins and in 25+ years
have only ever broken one. That was on my pillow, inside a bag, on a table
and I was leaning over to see what someone the on the other side was doing and
quite without thinking about it put my hand down on the bag to keep my
balance. The bobbin broke clean across.

However, in the last year or so I have had a run of wooden bobbins breaking -
four now, I think, so like any other tool for any craft there is a need to
replace at intervals. Aren't we lucky! I'm just a little extra careful with
my
special bobbins, whether that special-ness is from extravagance or sentiment.

I've got several glass bobbins, but haven't had the courage to use them.
Additionally, they're not all the same length or thickness. I have one,
bought on ebay, which origiated from the IOLI convention of 1989 hosted by
the Rocky Mountains Lace Guild, which has a spiky blue flower on one side.
So it would be impractical for use.

The details for Tuffnell Glass are:

no email address on his brochure/flyer (which only shows his beads).

I bought a couple of bobbins from him at Poole Bobbin Lace Day in June,
along with some rather nice beads. The bobbins I chose have a fixed cameo
plaque instead of loose spangles, so they'd feel completely different to
anything else on my pillow. He said if the bobbins break, he'll replace
them.

  Hello all,

I bought 3 of the bobbins on ebay, one was broken, although it was packaged
perfectly, the man sent me another to replace it. Just a happy customer
treated well.

[lace] glass bobbins

2003-11-12 Thread Helene Gannac
A bit late, but I thought I'd write anyway.
I have 3 pairs of beautiful glass bobbins which I use whenever I can. I found
the best way to keep the thread on them was to first wind a fine thread all
along the part where the thread is wound, starting with a double hitch, and tie
it with at least a double hitch to prevent it from slipping, leaving about
15-20cms free. Then I tie an ordinary knot with the end of this thread (I wind
enough to last a few times!) and the end of the thread I want to use, then wind
the thread on normally. The bottom thread helps the thread I want to use to
stay on the bobbin without slipping. When I have finished with that thread, I
just cut off the knot I made, and the glass bobbins are ready for another
thread to be wound on.
I use the same system with all my bobbins when I work with metallic
threads, which are also very slippery and tend to unwind easily, or when I have
very short lengths of thread to work with, as it means that I can use the
thread right down to the last inch before the knot, since I just unwind a
little of the supporting thread underneath if needed.

Hope you get to use the glass bobbins, they make a lovely sound, and are very
popular with the public when I demonstrate, One of them has got gold dust in
it, another one bits of opal. One pair has a twisted shank like a lollypop, and
the last pair is straight, but one is red and one is blue. I love them,
although I probably wouldn't want to have too many of them one one pillow at a
time.

However, I cannot get any thread to stay on them as they are simply too
smooth. I've tried tying the thread on, using sellotape (I was really
desperate that time!!) but to no avail...

[lace] glass bobbins and aluminum ones

2003-11-06 Thread Celtic Dream Weaver
I have some glass bobbins and I just love them. I love the sound they make which is
a happy sound to me. I do not have any problems in winding them. I just wrap over the
tail a few times and then just wind. I have found that for me I don't usually make a
hitch on the place where you are suppose to make it but instead right there the thread
is wound. It hold better for me. I do that with all my bobbins no matter what kind
they are.
I also have some bobbins that my husband made for me at work. They are aluminum and
they were turned on a lathe where he works. I also like the sound these make. For me I
don't have any problems with the weight with either kind. I have to admit that my
husband does a really good job making these bobbins too. At the moment things are busy
where he worksso I have been told it would be awhile before he can make me any
more. The ones he has he has made them all to look different. These tinkle too.
I also have some glass honiton bobbinsI don't have any problems in using these
either even though for honiton lace the thread is very fine. I also have a few
aluminum honiton ones that my husband has made for me too. They are all mixed, the
glass, aluminum and wood ones on my bobbinlace pillow and they work just fine for me.
I also have one sterling silver bobbin that I got from Frank somebody over in the
UK. The last name escapes me now...but I have found that that bobbin does have a
heavier feel to it.
Actually on my pillow I have all kinds of bobbins. I know you are suppose to use
mainly all the same bobbins on a piece of lace in the making but I mix mine. Well...it
is my pillow and I am the lacemaker so I just do what I want.

Sherry,

I don't hitch anywhere but on the main part of the thread - I've always done
that (always been a bit of a rebel!!!) but still the thread gently comes off
the bobbin. Must just be me.

The aluminium ones that your hubby made you must be quite light - I was
wondering do they ever leave a black deposit which can happen with foil?
