Bev is so very right! Two hours driving on an open motorway will take you about 140 miles and more if you exceed the speed limit. Two hours driving on the congested roads might only get you 50-60 miles on a good day, 15 miles on a bad day, and on a very bad day you could be sitting in a traffic jam going nowhere for two hours. I still haven't received my copy of Lace 140 yet, but looking at the list of lace days on The Lace Guild website there are a couple that I could get to with a bit of effort (but they are both in Essex so M25 and Dartford crossing to negotiate) but none that I will choose to go to. This can happen in the US too! On Friday night we tried to drive downtown to see our son's opening night in a trilogy of plays by G B Shaw. In 1 hour and 20 mins we went 10.9 miles and still had 11 mins driving to go. We were then 10 minutes late for the start and turned round and gave up, as they would not let us in until the 2nd act, and he was in the first of the trilogy :( We'll try again next Thursday. I have been demonstrating lace for the last three days at the Chicago Botanic Garden during the Fine Art of Fiber. It was fun - and more eventful than usual, with the emergency services called out twice. My Christening gown was much admired - and I was very pleased to have finished it (with more than 12 hours to spare!!) And the best question ever: Is this the tattoo parlour? Work that one out! More perspective - 61.4 million people in the UK. 3.8 million in Oregon. Vancouver Island (where I live) is 1/8th the size of the UK. Population, 0.75 million. To give a perspective to members around the world, Oregon is about the same land area as the country of England. I wonder if the ratio of lacemakers to population is the same in all three jurisdictions? :) I was thinking if I lived on the east coast of Canada or the US, had a bottomless wallet, and I liked airports a lot, I could fly over to the UK almost on the day, to attend a lace day. Reading the new posts from Lace News makes me so envious of all of my UK friends who have so many wonderful lace days to look forward to in the weeks ahead!!! Since I routinely travel 2 - 5 (or more!) hours to our twice-yearly lace days, I can imagine that many of you could go to numerous lace days within that travel time! And it is only once a year, in October. The local lacemakers look forward to it and welcome the more distant lacemakers who are able to come. It's a very special day for us. This year we had a lady who spoke about the history of handkerchiefs. She had a hundred or more on display. It was very interesting. It takes me over an hour to get to this lace day. To give a perspective to members around the world, Oregon is about the same land area as the country of England. The only other lace day that it's possible to go to...with a 4 hour drive each way... is in the state of Washington. That one is in the busy part of summer and I am usually too busy to be able to go. I, too, sometimes envy the people who are close to several lace groups, and can get to the large lace fairs. I think that the list of lace days available in the UK indicates there are still quite a few groups able to host such events. Yay! I am not so sure that it is a smorgasbord of choices for every lacemaker there, something comes to mind about 'you can't get there from here' even though 'here' is some few miles away. The distance to travel is relative to the route and condition of the roadways, and if travel would have to be by car, bus and/or train.. We are lucky in North America we *can* get 'there' from 'here' more or less directly given enough time.
