Yes I bought Jeans book of bookmarks they have Thistles,Roses,Daffodils and
Shamrocks? I made the Rose one for my sisters birthday haven't got round to
making the others yet. They are all very pretty and made using Bedfordshire
techniques. I don't think they are for the absolute beginner but Jeans
General instructions are really good .

Jean Leader's Book, A Thistle, A Rose and a Daffodil also has a pattern in it
for a shamrock bookmark. It's not a truly Irish design, but if shamrocks aren't
Irish I don't know what is. Holly sells it for 19.95.

since that what we see associated with Ireland so often, rather than a BL

I know BL was not a prevalent as other laces, but the student wants a BL

[lace] Looking for assistance on bobbin lace pattern

2017-01-26 Thread Valhalla Bee Farm
Good morning, all.

Seems like I contact this list only when I need something.
Sort of like the child only phoning home when they need money.

LOL : )

I do read all the posts. Not able to participate much since I am
a shop owner and very involved in my husband’s bee business.

Today, I am looking for help with a pattern from a book:
“75 Quick & Easy Bobbin Lace Patterns” by Veronica Sorenson.
This book is in the library belonging to the Lincoln Lacemakers and
possibly originally belonged to Cristina Banyard who has passed away.

The pattern is on page 48 - "Tommy Tortoise” designed by Karen Williams.
Would love any and all suggestions on making this pattern. Two of
the ladies I have taught some very basic torchon lace to would like
to make it. I’m not very good at starts. Really should take a class
at convention sometime on starts and finishes. But I see that there
isn’t one at this year’s convention. : (

We are looking at enlarging the pattern and using a heavier thread,
LizBeth sz 80 since I carry that in my shop and would prefer not to
use a thread as fine as the pattern recommends.

Correct me if I am wrong, but couldn’t the outlining be done in a
tape lace fashion - whole stitch, cloth stitch, whole stitch?
If left to my own knowledge, I would start with the longest tape going
along the outside edge of the turtle. Then doing each of the shorter
tapes joining in to the outside edge and/or each other.

We would probably use more simple fillings due to the limited
experience of the two beginners. Probably spiders, maybe rose ground

Any help I could get would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much!

The images I see after typing Vectorised lace into Google look like computer

Re: [lace] What is a vectorized lace pattern?

2015-03-06 Thread Amanda Babcock Furrow
"Vectorized" doesn't refer to the lace or to the pattern. It refers to
the computer image.

Any lace pattern you scan in can be converted to a vectorized image.
A vectorized image is one that is saved in the computer as a set of
drawing instructions - lines and arcs and such - instead of a set of
pixels. That way it can be resized arbitrarily big without ever becoming
blurry.

The search results for "vectorized lace pattern" mostly bring up stock
photo sites, because people paying for stock images care whether they
are vectorized or not. If the results look like machine lace, that reflects
the preferences of the stock image buying and selling crowd :)

Re: [lace] Pattern suggestion thanks - and Idrija lace books

2015-01-10 Thread laceandbits
Just to remind everyone on Arachne that Bridget Cook has had her comprehensive
Idrija book reprinted.  Another author who was shocked by the high amounts
second hand copies of the out of print books were being offered and sold for.
It includes instruction and patterns for both narrow tape (what we think of as
'typical' Idrija) and broad tape designs.

The reprint is available from Bridget, £20 plus shipping which is currently
£2.80 in the UK.  You'd need to enquire from her for overseas shipping costs.
PM me if you want her contact details.  As far as I know she's not offering
it for sale via any suppliers: possibly there's not enough difference in cost
and selling price for her to be able to offer a discount to them.

Hello all

thanks to all those who replied (on & off list) with pattern suggestions
- I now have lots of ideas (if only I had enough time to try them all),
one of which is to try Idrija lace as there seem to be lots of very
attractive smallish motif patterns available for that;

As I've never tried Idrija I could do with an instruction book to help
with the techniques before I leap into any more complex patterns - can
anyone tell me what Idrija books are out there, and which ones are worth
buying for a beginner to this type of lace?
Doesn't matter too much if they are not in English, particularly if
their are plenty of good diagrams (I've been making lace long enough to
"read" diagrams plus I can read French and Spanish pretty fluently, and
make out a reasonable amount in German or Italian - armed with the
international lace dictionary I'll tackle most lace publications)

Meanwhile,  going into the "lace" folder on my computer to dig out the
Spanish pattern books Lorelei mentioned (which I had downloaded ages ago
and forgotten about) I found a tape-and-fillings pattern for a treble
clef - no idea where I downloaded this pattern by Claudine Bouvain from,
there's just the pricking and a picture of the completed motif in my
files, originally white but it would look glorious multi-coloured in
really bright silk threads and I have a ridiculously large stash of
those so I shall be preparing my pricking and winding some bobbins
tonight..

I have collected some free patterns on my personal website, and on laceioli.
The ones I've found are all expired copyrights so that is not an issue.

About 1/4 down the page there is a section of easy patterns, some from
LePompe, and some I designed.
Near the bottom of the page are links to whole books available online. The 3
Spanish ones have lots of patterns, some fairly simple. Nearly all are Cluny
type designs. Some are bookmarks. The ones called Raizame and Encaixe are the
most appealing to me. Diagrams explain the hard pats.

[lace] Pattern suggestions wanted

2015-01-09 Thread Beth Marshall

Hi everyone

As it's quiet on the list I'm going to creep out of lurkdom and ask for
suggested sources for fairly quick, simple patterns using relatively
small numbers of bobbins.

Having joined in with the Salamander project and loved it I've realised
that the main reason I don't make lace these days is that my current UFO
projects (a wide cluny edging from one of the retournac pattern sets and
a bucks point edging in very fine black silk, both using 30+ pairs) are
totally unsuitable to my current life style (commuting full-time worker)
- I just don't have the time or mental energy to get anywhere with
them(takes me about 20 minutes just to unpack or pack up again on the
beds pattern - given that most weeks I'll have less than 2 hours
lacemaking time - including the getting out and putting away - it's just
not worth bothering to get the pillow out).

What I need is some relatively small projects using far fewer bobbins -
there are patterns out there, but they're not in my library (I've tended
to concentrate on the traditional continuous laces in the past) and I
don't get to lacemakers' fairs or the few shops which sell lace books.

So, any suggestions for pattern types/sources? Particularly cheap or
free patterns (my lacemaking budget is even more limited than my time).

Which lace styles/techniques would fit the bill?

Ideas, please!

(and if anyone can tell me where to see more of Michel Jourde's patterns
and how to order them - all I have is the link for his blog, doesn't
really help with seeing what's available to order...)

Thanks in advance

Re: [lace] pattern for a large star

2014-12-10 Thread lacel...@frontier.com
My star experiences have been in the 3-5 inch range, but I can imagine one a
bit bigger.  I think you could take any star pattern you like and enlarge it
to the size you want.  Adjust the size of thread to fit the new size, and
make it.
For the top of a tree, I can see various ways of mounting it.  One is to
insert a string or ribbon through lace at the center back and tie it to the
tree top.  Another is to make two stars and sew them together leaving the
bottom open.  The third is to make a paper cone or cylinder and attach the
angel to it.
Any star you make should look lovely on your tree.

you have tried this, does it look as good as you had hoped? And where did
you find a pattern?

The book is "Russian Lace Patterns" and the co-authors are Anna Korableva and
Bridget M. Cook. Batsford Press, 1996. The pattern is on page 27.

I worked this pattern in a workshop with Vera Cockuyt and she had enlarged the
pattern and introduced the use of color. It is a very sweet pattern!

RE: [lace] WANTED knitted lace pattern

2013-10-31 Thread Angel Skubic
Jenny stick those cold feet into a hot tub of water and get started. If you
like Estonian and you can do the nupps, then do the Estonian shawl...they
are marvellous. I can give you a tip...when making your yarnovers for the
nupps stretch your left needle out and make sure you have lots of room and I
use the click shut plastic yarn markers that look like big safety pins. I
put it through all the yarnovers after they are made so when I come back on
the purl row I don't miss one and have the nupp unravel on me (a tip I
picked up watching an Estonian lacemaker make nupps on u-tube) The larger
you make the yarnovers the easier it will be to purl them all together and
you will have pretty nupps. Also every 10 rows or so, use buttonhole thread
of a contrasting color and a size 24 tapestry needle and run a lifeline
through every stitch on that row. DO use lots of yarn markers to mark off
all repeats and be careful NOT to put your lifeline through any yarn
markers. I do some very difficult patterns that have pattern on every single
row and the lifelines are essential!!! They will save you a lot of
exasperation when you make a mistake and have to back up...nothing will go
past that lifeline. Also since your silk is so wonderfully fine, you will
want to make sure you use very small needles. I have two gossamer shawls on
needles but you can use 00 if the needles frighten you. Make sure
you have excellent lighting and as little distraction as possible so you can
focus. It is NOT hard but distractions can lead to mistakes. I copy my
patterns and put them in plastic folders so I can tape colored moveable tape
on whatever line I am currently on. It helps prevent you from dropping your
eye off the correct row.

What pattern to pick ? Since you bought such sensational yarn, Pick the
pattern that speaks to you, not to anyone else...the one YOU like best. You
would be surprised, but some of the prettiest shawls in that book are the
easiest. Oh if you have the dvd in the back of the book watch it...she is
full of tips. (also if that yarn is really to skinny you can double it
considering how much you have...just take the yarn from both ends and start
knitting from there. NONE of those patterns use 5,000 yards (I am working on
a pattern that uses 6,000 yards so they do exist, but not in Nancy's book)

Just to add my bit to this conversation, I have the Easy Lace program which
could be sold on to an interested buyer, as I no longer use it, but I have
been using Lace 2000 which has been improved upon by 2 further updates which
I love and use a lot. No axe to grind and just a user, someone who wanted
to create some of her own patterns and have succeeded with this program.
The other one was much more difficult but I did make up a few.

Sue T

The information is just a little bit out of date, I'm afraid.Lace RXP
was replaced by Lace8 a year ago and Easy Lace went out of business about
three years ago.

As I've said to someone, Lace8 is the nearest thing to drawing patterns by
handinstead of graph paper, pencil and eraser, substitute computer
screen, mouse and delete button! But of course, with all the computer
extras such as copy and paste etc.

I don't want to be seen as "advertising" which is why I've stayed quiet on
this discussion - and I should point out that I cannot supply anyone out of
Australia or New Zealand with copies of the programme anyway, due to
licencing restrictions. If you decide Lace8 is for you, I don't benefit in
any way!

At the launch, the authors presented a lecture on the history of lacemaking

were interesting and my friend Aphrodita whispered explanations to me so
that I could partly follow what was being presented.

Hi I use Visio, a Microsoft product. Only problem is that you have to do
all your own programing but on the plus side you can make up your own
modules and save them in your templates. Once you have made up your
pattern you can save it as a tiff and import it into a word document. My
teaching notes and prickings have been produced this way. Unfortunately
it is not available for Apples and I have to work on 2 computers.

It is also good for patchwork templates.

[lace] Pattern drawing software

2013-06-11 Thread Liz and Ken Roberts
I will have a great opportunity through my employer to explore/learn any of
several hundred different computer software programs over a week's time.
Besides Excel (and its formula mysteries) I thought I would check out any
possible programs that could be used for bobbin lace pattern making. Does
anyone have any suggestions of ones to explore and why you prefer it?

My week to access starts this coming Monday.

Thanks!

Re: [lace] pattern and thread size

2011-08-11 Thread Brenda Paternoster
Hi Sue

The various working angles of different Bucks patterns doesn't make a huge
difference to the size of thread needed. A rule of thumb is that if you make a
winding of 10 wraps it should fit snugly between two adjacent pinholes along
the footedge (or two vertical pinholes within ground) for point grounds and a
winding of 12 wraps should fit between two footedge pinholes for torchon if the
thread is the right thickness.

Is your pattern drawn over a straight grid? - so that you have to add and
subtract pairs to get the circular shape. The diamond shape of four adjacent
ground pinholes will be the same shape and size throughout the design. Or is
it drawn over a logarithmic/computer generated grid which means that one group
of four pinholes is a different shape/size to another group of four pinholes?

If your pattern is of the latter type (any sort of lace) you just have to
compromise and use a thread size to fit the average density of the pricking
and/or go for the thickest that you can squash into the tightest/densest parts
without it puckering up. I was told ages ago that the word used by the old
Bucks lacemakers for this puckering/wrinkling was twippering.

Thank you Brenda and Jane,
I just printed it off bigger, following your suggestions. As it was a
pretty small piece, the larger print still looks like it will work and comes
up a bit like a large church window which was what I was looking for and I
think will still fit inside one of those cards with a circular appeture.

thank you both for coming to my assistance, .

Hi Sue

If you have one of the later editions of Threads for Lace have a look at the
thread wraps per space - page 8 in Ed5.

The finer the thread the more leeway you have in the number of wraps/cm you
have, but.
for a Bucks (point ground) pattern using a 58 w/cm thread (slightly finer
than Brok 100/2) the ideal space between footedge pinholes is 1.8mm.
For a 40 w/cm thread (slightly finer than Egyptian 60/2) it's 2.5mm which
is quite a bit bigger.

100% / 1.8 x 2.5 = 138.88 so you need to increase your pattern by 139%
which is a lot. A4 -> A3 increase is 141% which is only marginally bigger.

[lace] new lace pattern

2011-07-14 Thread Janice Blair
Hi All,
I have been offline due to a storm last Monday. We have no power and being on
well and septic, so we have no water. ComEd say maybe electric by tomorrow! I
have had a shower this week but am getting in need of another one. It's
amazing
what you can do with baby wipes! I am hauling buckets of water from my
neighbors pool to flush the loos. They get awfully stinky even after one day.
Next I will have to deal with the rotting food in the freezer and fridge but
until I have running water I am not going to start that job. We had no damage
although Crystal Lake was the hardest hit and all my neighbors lost big trees.
Thankfully it was nothing like the tornadoes earlier and it is an excuse to
eat
out a lot now the places are back online. Anyway, finally managed to check my
mail while in the office where I work one day a week.

My DD has updated my Pattern Gallery on my web site with an easy Buckspoint
pattern. It was a class I taught a number of years ago. Go to the jblace.com
link below and choose Pattern Gallery on the right. This Saturday I am
teaching another simple Buckspoint edging at our guild meeting, you can see the
sample on this web page http://www.lacemakersofillinois.org/memnews.html We
may
be able to put that pattern online after the event.

If anyone emails me, please be patient as I don't know when I will be able to
check my mail again.

Re: [lace] Question - bobbin lace pattern for sailboat

2011-05-24 Thread Laceandbits
There was also a pattern of a sailboat under a rainbow with was given as a
free internet pattern, via arachne, many years ago now. It was in the
days before we had broadband access and it was big files and took agaes to
download. I was able to use the pattern itself, but a lot of the other files
that were with it were large unrecognised format to my computer - very
frustrating after all the download time. A few years ago, I adapted it to a
circle for a student to make in a big ring to hang in her window. It's made
mostly in white thread, with colours used for the rainbow, boat sails and
pennant.

If anyone else remembers this pattern, knows if it is still available, and
has a link, I for one would like to try downloading it again. I'm far
more computer literate these days and might be able to access the other files.
It originated in Europe - Germany? Netherlands? Possibly Sweden?

In addition to the Kortelahti lace pictures which incorporate sailboats that
Antje mentioned, there's a small sailboat (as an individual motif) in:
"Motieven in kleur; 220 patronen in Russiche kant" by Sebastiana van den Herik.
In the same book, there's also a motif of a full old-fashioned sailing ship
(3-masts and very pretty).

Hi Chris,

There are a few nice sail boats in Eeva Liisa Kortelahti's book "Let's make
bobbin lace", ISBN 951-99922-3-5, reprinted in 1995.

The boats are inserted in a picture... I mean: it is not an isolated boat,
but it also has a sea and a sky, making a square motive.

I hope I have made myself understood.

I bought my book directly to the author. But I suppose it is available in
some lace material shops...

Good luck.

[lace] Washington, DC based lace pattern themes/Bethesda

2010-09-01 Thread Dmt11home
Dear Louise,
Thank you for pointing this out. I guess that, while everything I need to
know, I learned in kindergarten, this is one part of the kindergarten
curriculum that has grown hazy in my mind in the years since. At one point, I
knew it was the Rappahannock, but all my Washington myths seem to have merged
in my mind, and an internet search reveals that a lot of other people are
merging their Washington myths as well.
Fortunately, I had not designed a lace pattern showing a coin not flying
over the Potomac. So, it is unnecessary for me to institute a redesign to
show a coin not flying over the Rappahannock. Apparently, the only basis for
the story is a remark by Martha Washington's grandson to the effect that
George Washington threw "a piece of slate" about the size of a silver dollar
across the Rappahannock. As your experience with coin throwing over the
Rappahannock illustrates, it seems to be something that a lot of people can
do.
Why this particular feat has been attributed to Washington as an example
of his superiority to other humans, I don't know. Actually, crossing the
Delaware River to Trenton, in winter, repeatedly, shows greater stamina.

Perhaps, it would be better, then, to concentrate on the fact that
Washington had a set of wooden teeth. Oh, darn, I just checked Wikipedia and he

didn't have a set of wooden teeth.

<>
Actually, I find it more interesting that Washington had a set of teeth
made from hippopotamus ivory. I wonder why that fact never made it to
kindergarten.
Hmm. Liz, were you looking to make a theme based pattern for Gros Point, or
for Bedfordshire, since I know you are teaching both? Perhaps a nice Gros
Point of cherry blossoms and roses on a jabot for a Supreme Court judge. I
think turkeys and bald eagles in Bedfordshire, ala Thomas Lester.

Yes , you are correct Sue. Architect's linen is used for needlelace and is
placed over the pattern and 2 or 3 layers of calico before couching down the
outline of the pattern through all layers. This is to prevent one's needle
catching on the fabric, also giving a stable foundation on which to work.
Someone also mentioned Ruskin work using leather cloth before removing threads
and this is used for exactly the same reason.

I have been given to understand that computers have now replaced the need for
Architect's linen but anyone you know who makes needlelace would be most
grateful to receive some.

Re: [lace] pattern prickings

2009-08-27 Thread bev walker
I have used both - the paper and the linen (yes, the linen is 'old
technology'), the latter was actually for a needlelace sampler - but...I
washed the linen first! So of course I got a tough piece of fabric, not a
glossy paper-ish medium. The fabric is so tough it was difficult to push a
needle through (duh!). The linen would be ok for a pricking that you draw.

So - the drafting vellum they use now is ok for prickings, but it is a
plastic, and any pointy bits, e.g. if you cut a bit for rectangular bookmark
- are very sharp. Then, when you pin it to the pillow, don't move it much,
else the pinholes get bigger. Also if you do put markings on the pricking,
use it upside down so the pen or pencil markings show from underneath,

I think it was architect's linen that is good for needlace, rather than
architect's paper for bobbin lace prickings.
(I suspect architects no longer use architect's linen now that everything is
designed on computers and printed/photocopied ad lib)

[lace] pattern prickings

We are currently using some architects paper for pattern making before cutting
some weird shape in wood, but in the back of my mind I am thinking I have
heard that architects paper makes good Lace Pricking paper/parchment.
Do any of you researcher lacemakers out there know if I am right. I have just
taken an offcut to see what it feels like to use. I am not convinced though,
just by looking at it after using card for so long.

[lace] Pattern?

2009-07-20 Thread Carol
Hi Lacers All,

I am hoping that one of you can help me!I must have more patterns,
prickings and books than any sane person needs but ...Many years ago, one
of the first things I made was a paperweight for my husband, which was a sort
of Tudor Rose design - very simple tape lace, but quite effective.I am
sure I still have the pricking but, as I have downsized quite drastically,
most of the lace gear is still in boxes, all over the cottage, and some up in
the loft! My landlord is the owner of a local estate agents here in Hadleigh
Suffolk, and he has been very generous to me, and as my cottage is called Rose
Cottage, with pargetted Tudor roses on the outside and the inside (is it still
called Pargetting, whe it is inside?) I would like to make him a similar
paperweight - but I can't find the pricking.

So - does anyone have a pricking, or can anyone tell me where I might find
one, of a quick and simple Tudor Rose?I will be most grateful to anyone
who can point me in the right direction.

Thanks to you all for your help.

[lace] Pattern

2009-04-07 Thread Sue
I have been thinking of making a garter pattern to pass on to one of my
sisters families to use and to pass on into the future. Yesterday a special
aunt passed away and somehow I feels like I would like to keep her name going
with this piece of lace.

I wonder if any of you lacemakers out there know of a pattern called Joyce or
Joy as a strip piece either in Torchon or Bucks (she didn't like my beds
piece). I there is I would like to get hold of a copy, and if not perhaps I
should design something.

[lace] lace pattern/drawing

2009-04-02 Thread Sue
Sorry folks, one more clarification of the pattern raffle/drawing. What is
on offer is two separate pattern sheets only, not a booklet (that is what I
bought for me which is what gave me the duplicate patterns). So whoevers
names, and there will be two, are drawn out in about 10 days time will be
sent one pattern sheet each.
I would hate anyone to be disappointed in what they receive and be expecting
more than is on offer.

I have 35 names at the moment.

A couple of people have asked if I will post my raffle internationally and
the answer is yes. I now have 19 names in the pot so far but will drawer it
on the 11th April.

We were on our way to visit my very sick aunt who is in a care home close by
so didn't do more than a quite look around the museum, but my DH was
fascinated by the very old sewn samplers dated in the 1700s and sewn by 9
and 10 year olds. Also they had a fantastic beaded design covered box which
we both drolled over. They had several figures (dummies) sitting at lace
pillows which I will have a better look at next time I manage to go. Also a
case of beautiful fans are on display.
I was born in the town and lived there for 28 years but I dont think they
had the collection there then.

[lace] Russian Lace pattern

2008-11-16 Thread Laceandbits
Hi Nova and all
The definitive answer form Bridget about the way the filling is worked for
the face of the doll, pg 24 of her Russian Lace Patterns book is as most of us
thought, whirlpools worked over four pairs (which is why they are square).
Complete three of the plaits and the fourth to the centre, work the whirlpool
to
the correct size and then plait to the centre of the next one.

[lace] pattern advice please

2008-09-11 Thread Wendy Davies
Hi all

My mum came over yesterday and has said she is making a cake for a lady
reteiring after 50 years in the St Johns Ambulance, I showed her one of my
christmas cards I have made and asked if I could maybe do one for her to place
on top of the cake for a keepsake for the lady.

Has any body got an idea where I could get the St Johns badge pattern or how I
would go about making up a pattern from the motif I have printed off the
computer.

Oh just tolet you all know my mum was over the moon with the cape I made for
her doll, I have left her to sew on the lace edging as I am not very good with
free hand sewing and didn't want to spoil it by machine sewing and maybe
getting it all wrong.

Thanks all

[lace] lace pattern from germany

2008-09-09 Thread Agnes Boddington

Hello Ann-Marie and those that are interested.

I looked on the website you specified for lace patterns
http://www.kloeppelwerkstatt.de/
I emailed them about how to order and pay for patterns, but have not had
a response from them yet.
However, it also stated that their patterns are availble at the
Kantcentrum in Belgium, so I emailed them, and had a response which
translated into

English says:

Dear madam,
Many of these patterns can indeed be ordered from us. Just quote the
order number for the particular pattern, plus a description of the pattern.
We will then deal with your order and will let you know how much the
postal charges to your country will be.

Regards, Anne

They did not respond about my question of how to pay for them, but their
website does state that they accept VISA.
Hope this helps. Should I hear anything from Germany, I'll let you know.
I did find the ebay ID for the german shop: kloeppelshop and they accept

The 2006 Christmas Card Exchange has been downloaded 1686 times since its

The 2007 Card Exchange patterns has been downloaded 2784 times since it went

Yes, Jeri, there is a book solely about the work of Milca Eremiasova.

It is called "Milca Eremiasova - Rec Krajky (The language of lace)" and it is
truly inspirational. To my mind she really is a lace artist.

It is published by Anna Halikova, Ceska palicka 2002. There is no ISBN no. in
it that I have spotted.

I bought my copy from http://www.palickovani.cz/start.php a few years ago

Dear Lacemakers and Collectors,

Is there is a book of this artist's work? Not just a picture or two in
other books, but a full book?

A few years before the OIDFA Prague Congress, a friend toured Czech
Republic. She sent an oversized postcard packet/folio of 13 cards, with a
small
multi-language booklet about the artist (for the library here). If any of
our
lacemakers are traveling in Czech Republic, be sure to ask at museums
displaying laces, what printed material is available about Milca Eremiasova!

This is an artist whose work we can show to young lacemakers - for their
inspiration - to show what simple thread and a talented artist can make. If
you
keep a book of samples of your own laces, a picture of one of Eremiasova's
laces somewhere in that can remind of what to strive for.
