[lace] PieceWork Magazine - More Lace Fun - July/August 2014 Issue

2014-06-27 Thread Jeriames
Dear Arachne Members,

May/June 2014 was PieceWork magazine's annual Lace issue, so imagine my
surprise to receive the July/August 2014 issue and find mostly lace! (Wait a
week for this to be delivered to book stores.) If you are far from North
America and you are not a subscriber, _www.Pieceworkmagazine.com_ (http://
www.Pieceworkmagazine.com) will lead you to free projects and a way to
order back issues plus this one.

1. On the cover are Irish crochet cuffs to make. Instructions accompany
an article about an early 20th century linen duster (a coat worn over
clothes to protect from dusty roads that were not paved at that time). The
duster belonged to Edith Graham Mayo, wife of one of the founding brothers of
the Mayo clinic in the state of Minnesota. It is interesting to see how the
crochet collar and cuffs were appliqued to a satin lining, then attached
to the duster. The author of this article is Mayo's great granddaughter,
Laura Esther Ricketts.

2. Catherine of Aragon's influence on the development of blackwork
embroidery on evenweave linen is told by Mary Polityka Bush. From a distance,
this embroidery looks like black lace. Instructions for a project included.

3. A graceful lacy compass rose shawl to knit - instructions included, by
Katrina King.

4. "Giant Bobbins, Cords, and the Franciscans" (of Malta). This is most
interesting research from Angela Peel. Especially if you ever met a chunky
bobbin you could not identify. The cords were made to hold closed the
brothers' habits. Each cord has 3 knots, representing poverty, obedience, and
chastity. Several antique cord stands (with holes in center top) are
shown. The work was done standing, so the stands are tall. The technique is
similar to Japanese kumihimo. No instructions given.

5. "Honiton Lace - One of England's Loveliest Laces" is a 6-page article
co-authored by Jo Ann Eurell (IOLI) and Laurie Waters (Lace News). You
will recognize that both correspond with us on Arachne. Instructions can be
had in eBook format for a Honiton motif. See
_www.interweavestore.com/a-taste-of-honiton_
(http://www.interweavestore.com/a-taste-of-honiton)

6. "A Chain of Netting" by Rita Bartholomew (Rita taught this technique
to the New England Lace Group in 2013). A generous 9 1/2 pages are devoted
to her Netting history and a bookmark project. _www.knotsindeed.com_
(http://www.knotsindeed.com)

7. The rarely-made Yap lace is featured in a 5-page article with
instructions, by Bart Elwell (IOLI). Yap lace is a combination of crochet and
needle lace.

8. Finally, a duo of knitting articles. A) Icelandic sweater, with
instructions. B) A Shoal of Ganseys - The Knitting Legacy of the Fishing
Community exhibition at Sheringham Museum, Norfolk, England, until September
10,
2014. Ganseys are sweaters worn by men while fishing.
_www.sheringhammuseum.co.uk_ (http://www.sheringhammuseum.co.uk) One of the
photos in
magazine is of "Herring Lasses Off Duty", knitting as they walk along, in
period
costume. This reminds of embroidered Panel 112 - Herring Girls, in "The
Great Tapestry of Scotland".

Hi Sherry
I agree that the lace issue is worth having!
BTW, The Wedding dress was not Carrickmacross lace, but the Carrickmacross
technique of appliqué was used to transfer the machine made motifs in the
lace to the tulle of the dress.
Brenda posted this url last week which is a video clip of the making of the

[lace] Piecework magazine/ Carrickmacross Lace

2011-05-29 Thread Celtic Dream Weaver
I thought I would let you all know with the talk of the Royal Wedding dress
(which I didn't think the lace looked like Carrickmacross to me) bring me to
the May/June issue of "Piecework" magazine. I don't have a car and there was
no place near me where I could go to the store and buy this issue of
"Piecework" but once I found out there was an article about Carrickmacross
lace I had to have it. So I ordered it from Interweave Press. I hate ordering
magazines online for you have to pay for the postage which made that magazine
cost me over $11.00. But I am glad I have it now.
Years ago I took a lace
class of Carrickmacross Lace with Mary Shields in Ithaca, N.Y. I am pretty
sure it was the same year that the twin towers were hit because I remembered
the worry about Mary flying in from Ireland in October and so soon after that
awful day happened.
Anyhoo...I remember that Mary had some beautiful
examples of Carrickmarcross lace with her for all of use to see. The lace was
so beautiful and Mary was so nice. I do believe that Marion Jones was also in
my class. The Carrickmacross Lace was written by Mary and Marion both. There
is also a beautiful corner hankerchief pattern in the magazine.
    After
that class Mary had said she would love to have a lace bobbin painted by me.
In exchange she said she would design a Carrickmacross pattern for me that I

[lace] Piecework Magazine - annual lace issue

2011-03-30 Thread Clay Blackwell
The annual lace issue of Piecework is going on the news stands soon. I
haven't seen it yet, but it sounds as if most of the lace is knitted.
There is also an article about the Alencon lace made for France's
Empress Eugénie's trousseau.

[lace] Piecework Magazine--lace knitting

2010-01-13 Thread L. E. Weiss
Hello all-
My Knitting Daily e-mail had this information about the latest Piecework
Magazine which includes a bit about lace knitting and has at least one very
interesting photo of knitting notations from 1847. I've had to omit photos
here but I'll be glad to forward the whole message to anyone interested.

Regards,
Lorraine Weiss in Albany, NY, a quiet white on grey landscape today

Knitting through Time

I think I lead a charmed life as the editor of PieceWork! The January/February
2010 issue, our 4th annual Historical Knitting issue, is a case in point.

In the spring of 2008, Donna Druchunas, a frequent contributor, stopped by the
office to introduce me to June Hall from England. June, an avid knitter,
historian, author, and keeper of a flock of rare Soay sheep, shared the
handwritten instructions for and tiny samples of lace-knitted edgings and
insertions that she found in a copy of a nineteenth-century pattern book.

Since the writing matched the inscription on the book's flyleaf (dated 1847),
the instructions surely were penned by the owner of the book, Miss Money. The
page with the intriguingly named Fly's Body pattern with its intriguing
symbols and sample is above. June deciphered the symbols and shares them,
along with several of the other patterns and her quest to find information on
Miss Money.

Laurann Gilbertson, textile curator at Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum in
Decorah, Iowa, sent a 1944 book about traditional Norwegian handcoverings to
Nancy Bush (well-known author, designer, teacher, and a member of our
editorial advisory panel). Among the objects depicted in the book was a
knitted "offering" mitt. As soon as I saw the photograph, I knew Nancy's
version of these unusually shaped mitts would be perfect (they're shown at
right). In her article, Nancy explains the practical reason for their unusual
shape.

I learned that Barbara G. Walker, knitting legend and author of the beloved
Treasury of Knitting Patterns books, was going to the 2009 Sock Summit with
Schoolhouse Press owner Meg Swansen (also a member of our editorial advisory
panel).

I instantly called Meg and asked her to please "introduce me" to Barbara, and
let her know that I would be thrilled to have her contribute to a future issue
of PieceWork.

My phone rang one day, and it was Barbara Walker-I could barely get a coherent
word out-all I could think about was "Oh my, I'm talking to Barbara Walker!" A
never-before-published Barbara Walker stitch pattern is included in this issue
(it's our cover and a detail is shown at left).

Definitely charmed, don't you think? And these are only three examples! To see
all (including Donna Druchunas's very compelling article, "Knitting in Jewish
Lithuania") go to http://www.interweave.com/needle/piecework_magazine/ to
preview our 4th annual Historical Knitting issue. I hope you will be
delighted.

Thank you everyone for web addresses and suggestion I take out a

Before I do that, though, I will try to find the email address of a UK firm

What a pity the magazine is no longer available to you.

Perhaps you should treat yourself to a subscription, and have it posted to
you. That method works quite well.

It is not usually at any newsagent here on Oz, either, - that I have found,
but they have an office now in Sydney where they deal with subs. Have a
look and see if there is an office/agent in UK who deals with subscriptions.

Dear PieceWork readers,

Actually, some additional projects and instructions are available at their
Website:
www.interweave.com/rd/pwprojects

With their desire to write more articles, the projects have to be somewhere
(without increasing the size of the magazine in these days of increasing
postage charges). It is often just one article per issue that makes the whole
subscription commitment to a magazine more than worthwhile!

You can also check out subscriptions at same address.

And as a new subscriber you get one free issue!

https://subscribe.pcspublink.com/magazine/Intw/subscribeForm.asp?track=JENB6&pub=PCWK&term=6

It seems to be $22 for 6 issues and the postage to international
destinations seems quite reasonable at $10/year.

You could still get a subscription to PW. Book and magazine sellers have never
carried PW in Israel, so I've subscribed since issue 10, years ago.
Occasionally, I've thought of dropping the subscription because the magazine has
become thinner and (to my mind) somewhat superficial, but every now and then a
really good article comes along.

Best wishes,

I went to my local knit shop and asked for qiviut.
They laughed at me. When I was reading the article in
Piecework about spinning the down of the musk ox to
get qiviut yarn, it should have translated into lots
of dollars in my head. Evidently it's very expensive,
US$60 per ounce. It sounds like an illegal substance!
So, my knit lady picked out a lovely baby
alpaca/cashmere/silk blend and I knitted the headband.
 I really like it.

[lace] Piecework magazine

2005-11-10 Thread Janice Blair
After the talk about the new Piecework magazine, which I had checked out on the
Internet, I made my son drive me to a bookstore on the way back from having my
staples removed from my operation scar. I found the magazine and as there was
a table nearby I was able to stand and look through it. I really wanted it for
the star tatting pattern which turned out not to be in the magazine, only
available on the Internet. What a disappointment. I did get to find out what
Quiviet knitting was but as I have short hair I do not need a hairband, it
did look like a simple lace pattern, quite doable, but not for me, so I hobbled
back to the car disappointed. Thanks for the review of the Anna magazine, I
doubt I will go in search of that one.
Janice

[lace] Piecework magazine

2005-04-20 Thread Diane Williams
Spiders,

I just got my Piecework magazine in the mail yesterday
(a big thanks to MIL who gifts me with it each year
for Christmas) and there are some lacy mentions.

The opening letter from the editor or publisher
mentions the IOLI convention in Denver and lists the
contact for people interested in joining IOLI. There
are also 2 lace days listed in the calendar. A nice
story about a Battenberg wedding hanky. And, the
theme of the next issue after this one is going to be
about lace.

I walked a little faster home from work yesterday
because DH said it was in the mailbox!

[lace] Piecework magazine in the UK

2004-11-19 Thread Scotlace
North American members can delete now, if they want, as the message is
directed at UK members. I'm putting this on lace rather than chat to reach as
wide
an audience as possible and before anyone screams at me this magazine does
sometimes have articles on bobbin lace, needlelace and other laces as well as
knitting, crochet, embroidery and a host of textile crafts.

For those who have never seen it this is a "heavier" magazine than the usual
run of cross stitch magazines we have and I have always bought it, when I
could find it, on my trips to the US.

In July i went into a small newsagent's shop in a small village on the Moray
Firth coast of Scotland. (Jenny in elgin - it was in Cullen). As usual I
glanced along the range of magazines and was stunned to fine the August issue
of
Piecework. I bought it and the lady there said she simply ordered it from the
nearest wholesaler and got it the same way she obtained all her stock.

When I returned to Wales I took it into my newsagent to see if I could order
it. The lady immediately phoned Smith's warehouse and said "That's it ordered
for you". All I had to do was wait. Unfortunately, the same lady suffered a
senior moment and sent back the September issue thinking this was the one I
had brought in. But this morning I collected the November/December issue and I
assume I will have no more problems.

The heading across the top says "19 ornaments to crochet, stitch and tat" and
inside are also articles on an Episcopalian minister who used to crochet
(plus patterns), there are five short articles on much loved old soft toys and
dolls, one on miniature houses with some miniature cross stitch, an article on
Greek embroidery followed by a cross stitch and a bargello ornament, and so
on.
I don't think I'll list the entire contents.

If any one else wants to get this magazine ask your local newsagent to order
it; it costs 3.95GBP. Failing this go to the website www.magazinecafe.co.uk
which will send it on subscription, at a greater cost. That is the source of
my copy.

sorry to have gone on for so long but I really like Piecework and I was so
frustrated when the American member were discussing the special bobbin lace
issues.
