[lace] PieceWork Magazine - More Lace Fun - July/August 2014 Issue
Dear Arachne Members, May/June 2014 was PieceWork magazine's annual Lace issue, so imagine my surprise to receive the July/August 2014 issue and find mostly lace! (Wait a week for this to be delivered to book stores.) On the cover are Irish crochet cuffs to make. Instructions accompany an article about an early 20th century linen duster (a coat worn over clothes to protect from dusty roads that were not paved at that time). The duster belonged to Edith Graham Mayo, wife of one of the founding brothers of the Mayo clinic in the state of Minnesota. It is interesting to see how the crochet collar and cuffs were appliqued to a satin lining, then attached to the duster. The author of this article is Mayo's great granddaughter, Laura Esther Ricketts. 2. Catherine of Aragon's influence on the development of blackwork embroidery on evenweave linen is told by Mary Polityka Bush. From a distance, this embroidery looks like black lace. Instructions for a project included. 3. A graceful lacy compass rose shawl to knit - instructions included, by Katrina King. 4. Giant Bobbins, Cords, and the Franciscans (of Malta). This is most interesting research from Angela Peel. Especially if you ever met a chunky bobbin you could not identify. The cords were made to hold closed the brothers' habits. Each cord has 3 knots, representing poverty, obedience, and chastity. Several antique cord stands (with holes in center top) are shown. The work was done standing, so the stands are tall. The technique is similar to Japanese kumihimo. No instructions given. 5. Honiton Lace - One of England's Loveliest Laces is a 6-page article co-authored by Jo Ann Eurell (IOLI) and Laurie Waters (Lace News). You will recognize that both correspond with us on Arachne. A Chain of Netting by Rita Bartholomew (Rita taught this technique to the New England Lace Group in 2013). The rarely-made Yap lace is featured in a 5-page article with instructions, by Bart Elwell (IOLI). Yap lace is a combination of crochet and needle lace. 8. Finally, a duo of knitting articles. A) Icelandic sweater, with instructions. B) A Shoal of Ganseys - The Knitting Legacy of the Fishing Community exhibition at Sheringham Museum, Norfolk, England, until September 10, 2014. Hi Sherry I agree that the lace issue is worth having! BTW, The Wedding dress was not Carrickmacross lace, but the Carrickmacross technique of appliqué was used to transfer the machine made motifs in the lace to the tulle of the dress. [lace] Piecework magazine/ Carrickmacross Lace
I thought I would let you all know with the talk of the Royal Wedding dress (which I didn't think the lace looked like Carrickmacross to me) bring me to the May/June issue of Piecework magazine. I don't have a car and there was no place near me where I could go to the store and buy this issue of Piecework but once I found out there was an article about Carrickmacross lace I had to have it. So I ordered it from Interweave Press. I hate ordering magazines online for you have to pay for the postage which made that magazine cost me over $11.00. But I am glad I have it now. Years ago I took a lace class of Carrickmacross Lace with Mary Shields in Ithaca, N.Y. I am pretty sure it was the same year that the twin towers were hit because I remembered the worry about Mary flying in from Ireland in October and so soon after that awful day happened. Anyhoo...I remember that Mary had some beautiful examples of Carrickmarcross lace with her for all of use to see. The lace was so beautiful and Mary was so nice. I do believe that Marion Jones was also in my class. The Carrickmacross Lace was written by Mary and Marion both. There is also a beautiful corner hankerchief pattern in the magazine. Hello all- My Knitting Daily e-mail had this information about the latest Piecework Magazine which includes a bit about lace knitting and has at least one very interesting photo of knitting notations from 1847. I've had to omit photos here but I'll be glad to forward the whole message to anyone interested. The January/February 2010 issue, our 4th annual Historical Knitting issue, is a case in point. In the spring of 2008, Donna Druchunas, a frequent contributor, stopped by the office to introduce me to June Hall from England. June, an avid knitter, historian, author, and keeper of a flock of rare Soay sheep, shared the handwritten instructions for and tiny samples of lace-knitted edgings and insertions that she found in a copy of a nineteenth-century pattern book. Since the writing matched the inscription on the book's flyleaf (dated 1847), the instructions surely were penned by the owner of the book, Miss Money. The page with the intriguingly named Fly's Body pattern with its intriguing symbols and sample is above. June deciphered the symbols and shares them, along with several of the other patterns and her quest to find information on Miss Money. Laurann Gilbertson, textile curator at Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum in Decorah, Iowa, sent a 1944 book about traditional Norwegian handcoverings to Nancy Bush (well-known author, designer, teacher, and a member of our editorial advisory panel). Among the objects depicted in the book was a knitted offering mitt. As soon as I saw the photograph, I knew Nancy's version of these unusually shaped mitts would be perfect (they're shown at right). In her article, Nancy explains the practical reason for their unusual shape. I learned that Barbara G. Walker, knitting legend and author of the beloved Treasury of Knitting Patterns books, was going to the 2009 Sock Summit with Schoolhouse Press owner Meg Swansen (also a member of our editorial advisory panel). I instantly called Meg and asked her to please introduce me to Barbara, and let her know that I would be thrilled to have her contribute to a future issue of PieceWork. My phone rang one day, and it was Barbara Walker-I could barely get a coherent word out-all I could think about was Oh my, I'm talking to Barbara Walker! A never-before-published Barbara Walker stitch pattern is included in this issue (it's our cover and a detail is shown at left). Definitely charmed, don't you think? You could still get a subscription to PW. Book and magazine sellers have never carried PW in Israel, so I've subscribed since issue 10, years ago. Occasionally, I've thought of dropping the subscription because the magazine has become thinner and (to my mind) somewhat superficial, but every now and then a really good article comes along. What a pity the magazine is no longer available to you. Perhaps you should treat yourself to a subscription, and have it posted to you. That method works quite well. It is not usually at any newsagent here on Oz, either, - that I have found, but they have an office now in Sydney where they deal with subs. Have a look and see if there is an office/agent in UK who deals with subscriptions. After the talk about the new Piecework magazine, which I had checked out on the Internet, I made my son drive me to a bookstore on the way back from having my staples removed from my operation scar. I found the magazine and as there was a table nearby I was able to stand and look through it. I really wanted it for the star tatting pattern which turned out not to be in the magazine, only available on the Internet. What a disappointment. I did get to find out what Quiviet sp knitting was but as I have short hair I do not need a hairband, it did look like a simple lace pattern, quite doable, but not for me, so I hobbled back to the car disappointed. Thanks for the review of the Anna magazine, I doubt I will go in search of that one. Spiders, I just got my Piecework magazine in the mail yesterday (a big thanks to MIL who gifts me with it each year for Christmas) and there are some lacy mentions. The opening letter from the editor or publisher mentions the IOLI convention in Denver and lists the contact for people interested in joining IOLI. There are also 2 lace days listed in the calendar. A nice story about a Battenberg wedding hanky. And, the theme of the next issue after this one is going to be about lace.
