RE: [lace] glass bobbins

I, too, use glass bobbins. My first pair was a gift, or I'd have assumed
they'd break too easily to buy any myself. In 10 years since I got my first
pair, I've broken a couple of glass ones, but I've broken wood and bone
ones, too. Yes, I wind the thread more times over itself before letting go,
but then it holds just fine. They'r not any more likely to go renegade
(jump off their tether and dash for the floor) than other bobbins. I love
the sound of them and often include a couple of pairs on my pillow.

I use glass bobbins a lot - I like the way they tinkle as I use them -
and I don't have any problem winding them. 1. I hold the beginning of
the thread against the bobbin, 2. wind several times around the top,
3. then several times over the tail of the thread that I'm holding
down. Now that I think about it, with glass bobbins I probably do more
of 3 before I stop holding the thread against the bobbin, than I do with
wooden bobbins. Seems to work for me.

OK - so I give in. Once I've finished the honiton which I'm going to start
and finish this weekend (yes, I believe in miracles) I will start a piece and
and use my two pairs of glass bobbins and become as hooked as you all are!!!

What's she going to do - hold them up at gun point and threaten them that if

Hi All,

I bought a pair of these bobbins on ebay a few weeks ago. I found them a
little chunky (diameter 3/8ths inch) and somewhat longer (5.25 inches
without spangle) than the other midlands bobbins that I use - they'll
be fine for me for gimp though. You may need to take this into
consideration if you like your bobbins to be compatible size-wise.

They were quickly despatched and very well packaged.

Tufnell appears to be the one then. Also, looking at the website, the two
I've already got are from him - so the rest should feel similar enough. An
added extra, the price isn't too bad to slowly work my way up to lots of
glass bobbins. I had visions of them being well over £5 each!

Re: [lace] glass bobbins

2005-06-29 Thread mimi23boyz
Hi Helen !

I also was smitten with the glass bobbin fever a few years ago! Like Margot, I
loved the sound of the bobbins. But one day, four hit the floor at the same
time and broke (can't remember the details of that disaster!) Lucky for me,
the maker promised to mend any I broke, so I had them mended, and then promptly
broke another one. Since then, I've been discouraged about using them, AND
have pretty much moved to continental bobbins anyway.

So the short answer to your question is that these bobbins aren't any more
expensive than others, but they are more fragile, so the expense will be in
breakage.

Clay said "So the short answer to your question is that these bobbins aren't

But on the other hand, I have probably a dozen glass bobbins and in 25+ years
have only ever broken one. That was on my pillow, inside a bag, on a table
and I was leaning over to see what someone the on the other side was doing and
quite without thinking about it put my hand down on the bag to keep my
balance. The bobbin broke clean across.

However, in the last year or so I have had a run of wooden bobbins breaking -
four now, I think, so like any other tool for any craft there is a need to
replace at intervals. Aren't we lucky! I'm just a little extra careful with
my
special bobbins, whether that special-ness is from extravagance or sentiment.

I would agree that some of the bobbins - such as the ones made by Tuffnell -
are quite chunky, so I am not too keen on those. But - Malcolm Fowler makes
the most delightful glass bobbins - they are slim and dainty, and with all
sorts of lovely things in the bobbins - such as titanium spirals (lovely
variegated blueish colours) and copper spirals (brown/gold variegated

you name it he'll do it! I have a small fortune's worth of his bobbins and

Re: [lace] Glass Bobbins

2005-06-30 Thread Carol Adkinson
Hi BarbE et al,

I always have lots of Malcolm's glass bobbins on my pillow, and they are
remarkably sturdy! I have in the past fifteen years or so only broken two.
The first was at a Suffolk Lace Day, when a lady saw me winding them, and
paused to pick one up. She promptly dropped it on a parquet floor, and it
broke into three pieces - not the least bit concerned, she looked at the
pieces on the floor, said "My - they don't bounce, do they!" and stomped
off.I was so amazed, I didn't take off after her and deck her!
However, Malcolm was at the Lace Day, and mended the bobbin - it was one
with two little tiny red bobbins inside, and although there is a scorch mark
where it was mended, I am still delighted with it, and use it a lot.

The other breakage was my fault. You know how it is - I was coming
downstairs, with lots of stuff in my arms, and too lazy to make more than
one journey upstairs!I tripped coming downstairs, and fell the last
three/four steps - the gear went everywhere, and the little box containing
all the bobbins opened, and the bobbins went everywhere - but miraculously,
only one bobbin of the four or five pairs of glass bobbins in the box broke!
But that one broke into lots of little pieces, so no chance of that one
being repaired.

So - don't be afraid to use the bobbins - they sound lovely on a pillow, and
look beautiful too.

Carol - in Suffolk UK.

The first glass bobbins I got were a gift (don't know who made them,
but I've seen them for sale by Holly van Sciver). I'd never have
bought them, being afraid they'd break too easily, but I wanted to use
my gift so I put them on a pillow. I now have maybe a dozen glassies.
When I packed to go to Arachne '98 (a grand convention of Arachneans in
Nottingham, organized by Pat Hallam and Margaret Allen), I over-stuffed
the bobbin box and broke two bobbins. One was wood and the other
glass. Another time, I sat on my bobbin roll. It only had a few
bobbins in it (whew!!!), but I broke one wood and one glass.

If you drop them onto cement or other very hard flooring, they break
more readily than wood or bone. Other than that, though, they seem
just as sturdy. I've only broken the two glassies, but have broken
other woods.

I don't hitch anywhere but on the main part of the thread - I've always done
that (always been a bit of a rebel!!!) but still the thread gently comes off

The aluminium ones that your hubby made you must be quite light - I was

HI Liz and others,
I believe I hitch my bobbins just like you do. I hitch them where I wind the thread.
Holds fine for me and usually I don't have a tough time getting the thread to unwind
when I need more, but sometimes I do. When that happens I just get my trust pin out
and pick up where it is hitched on the neck of the bobbin...unwind and then tighten
the hitch again.
As far my aluminum bobbins go that my husband has made me I have had no problem with
them. The aluminum that my husband makes the bobbins out of is company stock. Might be
left over or something, but they are nice and they are as light as my other bobbins.
Some time I will get a scan of them and put a picture of them up on my website for
others to see.And they do not leave any marks that I have ever seen...though truth to
be told I can pretty much count on my fingers...okay maybe toes too how many
bobbinlace things I have made.

Hello Jean,

It's just the box that has a Brian and Diane Miller 'label' in it.

Diane painted bone bobbins and miniature paintings but Brian made a variety
of items, pen holders, paperweights etc where he encapsulated leaves,
flowers, even dandelion clocks in some sort of clear acrylic. They were
sold in good quality presentation boxes and the Millers took great care
about displaying the item. These glass bobbins are just in the box for safe
keeping, I should think.

I've got a couple of their boxes but what's in them now was made by me.
