i was wondering about all those squirrels everybody's writing about . are
they all tree squirrels ?
The black, red, grey and fox squirrels are all tree climbing and dwelling
squirrels.

(The black ones are prettiest, but the fox ones are rather cute, with orange
tummies, and round here are definitely the largest and most prosperous. We
don't have any red ones)

Dear Susan,
Yes they are protected, and Yes, most of us love them. I know they were a
real nuisance down on my Granny's farm because there were too many of them
and they were killing the beautiful Eucalyptus viminalis trees. But here
they're great to have around

RE: [lace-chat] Black Squirrels

2004-10-25 Thread Carolyn Hastings
Here in the Boston area we have red, grey, and quite a few black
squirrels. The black ones are new in the last ten years or so. I've
heard that they are a mutation of the grey squirrels, other than color,
no difference.

The red squirells were also new in the sense that they grey squirrels
had driven them out years ago, or so I was told, but have somehow made a
come back. I had been told that the grey squirrels are much more
aggressive than the red ones, but people who have red squirrels in
abundance say the opposite. The red squirrels are definitely smaller
than the grey squirrels, at least around here.

They seem to go a little crazy in the fall, and so do the chipmunks --
always dashing from nowhere in front of cars, or stopping for a bite to
eat in the middle of the road and not moving for *anything* -- it's a
wonder any of these species survive!

Regards,
Carolyn

PS so much of what I wrote above is I've been told ... so I did a
little looking it up -- apparently the Black squirrels are a variety of
the eastern grey squirrel, Sciurus carolinensis And one town, Council
Bluffs, IA claims to have had black squirrels since the 1840's (so much
for appearing in the last ten years ...). For those of you who are
interested, there are also White Squirrels -- the photo of the little
rodent is very cute -- but I haven't time to get into that!

[lace-chat] Black squirrels

2004-10-25 Thread Janice Blair
We have had black squirrels on the southern part of our street for a number of years.
Recently I noticed that they have made it up to our end of the street, probably 1/2
mile as I see them running around our back yard. I have not started feeding the birds
yet and the only squirrels that have come up on the deck so far are the greyish ones.
Did see a red fox at the southern end of the street the other day. When I came to the
states 22 years ago I was told there were no foxes. That was in Pennsylvania. I have
seen quite a number in this area of Illinois, must be why the local river is the Fox
River. :-)

Chat about squirrels scambering about, and David's reference to grey Koalas
(which are few and far between) brought to mind the grey mice plagues that
infest our wheat growing areas in Australia some years. Makes me shudder to
think of them.

And the only grey things that invaded my garden (before I closed the enormous
iron gate every night) were over a metre high grey kangaroos looking for
something to eat - now we've finally had a bit of rain, they've gone bush
again.

I thought more of possums than koalas. We do have small grey kangaroos over
in the bush(forest) behind our house. Even though I have seen a dead koala
on the road I haven't managed to spot a live one in the trees. I haven't
heard one either, they make a scarey sound.

2004-10-25 Thread Ruth Budge
Noelene, during one of those mice plagues, we stayed in a motel in Bathurst
(for the non- Australians, Bathurst is a quite large city a couple of hours
drive west of Sydney). All evening our eldest son, then aged about 15, kept
driving us mad by saying there's a mouse.there's a mouse. I put it down
to his trying to scare his younger siblings. However, after we put them to
bed in the other room, we settled down with a quiet cuppa - and lo and behold,
there *was* a mouse!

So this picture of righteous indignation, complete with *beautiful* English
accent, marched down to the owner of the motel to complain. He provided me
with a mouse-trap and cheese, which didn't really placate meI was horrified
to find a mouse in a top-class motel.

I'll cut the long story short - suffice to say I didn't sleep at all during the
night - we caught three mice, and heard many others scratching around inside
the wall cavities in both our rooms, and I've absolutely refused to stay in
that motel ever since!

Needless to say, the manager blamed it all on the mouse plague, but our friends
who live in Bathurst (and who live on a 5 acre block on the outskirts of town,)
were adamant that *they* hadn't had trouble with mice coming in from the
fields, so didn't understand why the motel in the centre of town should claim
to do so!!

I know Stanford has both black and ground squirrels, and they both seem to be
doing fine. The ground squirrels are much more numerous - in fact on average
there's at least one in sight wherever you are on campus. I'm not sure about
brown tree squirrels though.

At Caltech we have lots of brown tree squirrels (I think that's what they are,
anyway), and I think a few black squirrels, but again the brown ones are much
more numerous.

So as far as I know black squirrels don't drive the other ones out.
