pairings will be sent out to all who desire to participate1 DEC 2013 - all

couple ground rules.- If you want to share your work and the joy of the
season, please send us your name. However, if you send us your name and you
are paired, please follow through. It is most disappointing if someone fails

work and card. - if for some reason after you have been paired you find you
cannot follow through, please let us know and we will reassign your name to
someone else. - last, if you feel uncomfortable sharing your work because you
are just beginning, please don't opt out. We will love your work all the more
because you tried. Janet from Bridlington, Yorkshire, UK

[lace-chat] Christmas exchange and lace

2012-12-21 Thread Sue
Thanks to Clay and Sue Babbs coming to my rescue there are now three more
photos on my Hurwitzend folder.
Clay and I were discussing her tree and lace decorations and I explained that
our tiny tree was now too small to hold all my pieces, some from exchanges but
also lots of other little pieces done by myself or gifts from friends. Some
are momentoes of lost family and friends including our two pet cats so I made
a red curtain strip to hang from one of my internal doors and pin them on
there each December. It is lovely to take them out of the tissue paper and
pin them on. We also bought two glass angel bells which my husband decided
needed lace skirts, so they still hang on the tree and the top angel had a
lace gown made up using a strip of Christine Springett lace using gold beads
in strategic places.
Clay asked to see pictures so I took a couple of new ones showing the curtain
with lace, the tree angel on her own and also the tree with all 3 angels on
along with the little robins and lots of glass baubles although there is
already a photo of the glass angel bell on her own in the folder.
So with Sue Babbs help they are now in the right folder, something I
couldn’t manage to achieve.

[lace-chat] Christmas Card Exchange

2012-12-19 Thread Nicky H-Townsend
Hello

Today I received a delightful card from my exchange partner Marji Sakievich,
a lovely lace angel watching over a nativitiy scene - and next year the
angel which will be adorning my Christmas Tree, along with my other past
exchange decorations - they are all much treasured and look so very pretty
on the tree. I'm hoping that Marji either has or will shortly receive my own
card.

May I wish you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas/Festive season and
may you all continue to enjoy your lacemaking in 2013

Greetings to you all

[lace-chat] Christmas Card exchange

2012-12-15 Thread Nicky H-Townsend
Hello all

I'm having to try and re-send this message because I don't think it got
through the first time, but at least I'm finally receiving both Arachne
digests again.

---

This morning I received a lovely Christmas card from my exchange pal Joepie
Hammett in Sussex - thank you Joepie it is absolutely delightful and what a
lovely thought to include the coaster for mounting it in - after Christmas
it will be in my den so I can admire it everyday - it is a beautiful little
owl that Joepie has designed, he has just so much character he really is
wonderful thank you very much.

Thank you also to both Amber and Avital for getting me back on to Arachne
after weeks of absence even from lurkdom - having had a major computer
breakdown, a new computer and new to us windows 7 operating system [all
courtesy of my husband's son for husbands significant birthday]. But it has
been a bit of a nightmare, firstly getting to grips with the new system
(still can't find 'undo' button), and secondly finding that all the files
from the old computer had been transferred but it was just as if the filing
cabinet had been emptied and everything stuffed back in anywhere!!! So a lot
of re-organising. Then to upset the apple cart we changed our ISP provider
so for those who may wish to know I have a new e.mail address
bob.b...@btinternet.com which leads to another question - does anyone know
how I go about boosting the signal for wifi usage elsewhere in the house -
before the change of ISP provider we had good wifi coverage and I could use
my lap top anywhere in the house - since the change we can't use the tablet,
kindle or laptop unless in the same room as the BT hub yet they are
connected for wifi usage, the signal is just too low. Any suggestions.

Many thanks

Nicky in Suffolk

[lace-chat] Christmas tree thief

I've just read a report about a Christmas tree thief in Yorkshire where the
police caught him by following the trail of pine needles (from 5 trees) to a
garden half a mile away! To add icing to the cake they found a cannabis farm
in his house. That's one man who isn't going to have a happy time over
Christmas but I imagine the police are chortling.

[lace-chat] Christmas Lace Exchange

2011-10-17 Thread lackam

Hello all,

Sorry for the late notice to this group-I forgot to email you. Yes you
can send me nasty grams for a day for that.

I am organizing the annual lace exchange with Jenny Brandis's help this
year. Sign up time is short this year due to a late start. If
interested in participating please email me with your name, address,
how many cards you are going to make, and where you want your partner
to be from (or not from).

I will try to meet everyone's preferences to the best of my ability.
Sign ups are open until October 31st. I will match up everyone and send
out notices no later than November 2nd. Please try to have your lace
completed and in the mail to your partner no later than December 5th.

Remember to acknowledge when you receive your gift card and send a
picture of it to Jenny Brandis for archiving.

The more we have sign up the more fun it will be.

Yes, unfortunately it's just become a profitfest for businesses. Soon the
supermarkets here will be selling mince pies with holly decoration on the
packet and a use-by date within two weeks of purchase.

I refuse to have anything to do with the commercialisation. In our family we
buy and give presents at any time of the year when we feel we want to - not
at Christmas - but do have a traditional Christmas lunch. Other than that
they make no profit from us for events at that time of year which are
supposed to be spiritual, not the opportunity to make a fast buck.

Besides which, as I get older, time seems to go faster and faster. I object
to businesses trying to make it go even faster by dragging dates forward by
6 months. Back-to-school uniform clothes for children were in the shops long
before they even stopped school for the long summer holiday.

True - and did you ever know a schoolchild who was the same size in
September as they were in July, or even the size we'd predicted in
July? So buying early was an expensive gamble, remember?

What annoys me about dragging the seasons forward is that
when I actually need stuff, it's all been remaindered.

I did score a pair of sandals a few days ago, though. At a

Since I make the rest of my clothing, the main problem is
that I'm working on stuff for the year before last!

(Note to self: finish the three curry bras today. I's too
hot to get through the week on six, two of which can't be
worn under light-colored clothing.) (Helps to get caught in

[lace-chat] Christmas pud

2010-12-20 Thread Rick and Sharon Whiteley
Hi there. Well, I've steamed all but the biggest of my Christmas puds :)
That one's on the go right now. I took off a small sliver of one of the
cooked ones this morning and while I think it's a bit overcooked, it
certainly is tasty. I was a little worried because it had no sugar or
spices and it occurred to me that tastes might have changed a bit in 160
years. But, I have to say it really is a nice pud. Thurlow helpfully sent
me a web-site that had bar tender's measures and it said that a
wineglassfull was 4 ounces. I had used 5 because it didn't look right.
Anyway, for those who might be interested the recipe is as follows: From
Mrs. Beeton's book in 1861.
1½ lbs. of raisins, 1½lbs of currents, ½lb of mixed peel, ¾ lb of bread
crumbs, ¾ lb of suet, 8 eggs, 1 wineglassful of brandy. Boil for 5-6 hrs.
and 2 hours on the day it is to be served.

This really is a nice fruity tasting pudding.
My thanks to those who offered advice :) Have a great holiday season.

Thank you, Marion, Janice and Daphne for reminding me where to send the

I really enjoyed making a piece of lace with a purpose - for someone rather
than just making it. I was a bit worried as so many of you are such
experienced lace makers and I'm such a beginner, but I'm pleased with the
result (only 2 tiny faults, I think, where I missed an edge pin). The
piece is greatly enhanced by my daughter's transformation of it into a
beautiful card, something she enjoyed too - it was lovely to create
something together using our combined talents. I'm so looking forward to
receiving my card.

Greetings, festive Spiders!

The deadline for joining the Christmas Card exchange has come and gone,
and I have worked out the pairings of partners. Tomorrow, I will send
out emails to each of you who signed up for the exchange. As it
happened, an even number of people joined the exchange, so each person
will only need to make one card to exchange. If there are any of you
who wanted to exchange with two, and are disappointed, email me, and
I'll see if I can't match up a few more of you!!

[lace-chat] Christmas food shopping - just how much can people eat?

2008-12-23 Thread Jean Nathan
Went down to the hospital this morning for my monthly blood test. Left home
at 7.30am, and the big Tesco supermarket car park near my home was already
nearly full. By the time I came back at 8.30am, there were cars queuing to
get into the car park, and the shops are open again tomorrow. Just how much
can people eat?

The supermarkets are only closing on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, but even
last week trolleys were piles so high you'd think there was going to be a
month long siege, and that's in addition to what they've been buying in the
way of biscuits, sweets, alcohol and other stuff that will keep, since the
beginning of September.

To my way of thinking (which is obviously wrong), if some people are buying
that amount, there must be at least an equal number not buying anything. I
really don't understand people who stuff themselves with food and get
paralytic drunk over the Christmas period.

There must be an awful lot of waste food going into landfills, when many
people in the world are starving. I know what's in our supermarkets can't
help them, but it does still seem morally wrong to me.

I'm not religious, and get quite cross when strangers assume that everyone's
a Christian and celebrates Christmas and wish me a Merry Christmas. In the
supermarket last week, a woman tried to push me out of the way because she
was impatient. When I didn't move she said sarcastically And a Merry
Christmas to you! I know it was wrong (particularly because I'm not Jewish,
and I apologise to those of you who are), but I immediately responded with
And a Happy Hanukkah to you., which left her looking very perplexed. The
older I get, the grumpier I get, especially at the commercialisation of it
all.

And as for snow, we had one fine sprinkling about 6 or 7 years ago which
settled for about an hour, for which I'm very grateful having been snowed in
frequently when we lived on top of the hills in Somerset.

Gets off soapbox.

Having got that off my chest, Season's Greetings from me to all of you and
whatever you celebrate around this time of year, and greetings to you if you
don't celebrate anything at all.

I have to agree with you, Jean, and I do celebrate Christmas. I had to go
to Tesco this morning as I realised I'd omitted a couple of things from my
shopping list yesterday morning. I hadn't intended going again before
Christmas
Day and found the place absolutely manic. At least I was able to go round
carrying a hand basket, which speeded things up, and the 'basket only'
checkout till was free. On top of all you have said I'll add that our local
Tesco
is open for a few hours on Boxing Day - as are Spar shops and the little
independents run by non Christians.

I intend to spend Christmas Day in bed nursing my horrible chest and sinus
infection :-( I'm probably heading there now.

Happy Christmas (to those who like the greeting).

Jean, my maths equates with yours, those feeding a small army must
surely be balanced by those being fed.

We are going to one daughter tomorrow evening, one on Christmas Day and
the other on Boxing Day so really I need a bit less this week though I
did get some extra soft drinks for the children.

I have just been to collect the capon for Sunday when I'm cooking for
all of them. Dave (my butcher) is closing from tomorrow lunchtime
until Tuesday. He said even if he did open on Saturday he wouldn't get
any deliveries, and he closes on Mondays anyway, so he's having five
days off. However the newsagent/tobacconist/confectonery shop next to
him is open until late on Christmas Eve and open all day Boxing Day,
though what they sell that's going to be essential for Boxing Day I
don't know. Perhaps someone will run out of chocolate bars!

With all the shopping done and the pressies wrapped I don't feel so bad
now about tackling the mountain of ironing that need to be done and
pehaps I'll even get a bit of of housework done!

Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, Season's Greetings or Bah Humbug
whichever you prefer

Re: [lace-chat] Christmas food shopping - just how much can people eat? And lace on the pillow...

2008-12-23 Thread Clay Blackwell
It's not just in the UK... I went to the grocery store yesterday,
thinking to avoid the rush... oh silly me. It was early in the
morning, and still the parking lot was full. As luck had it, a spot
opened up for me *just* as I got to it. I spent more than usual, mainly
because a few staples we use were on sale, so I stocked up. I also
splurged in the deli on a 1/2 pound of wafer-thin-sliced Smithfield Ham
- it just doesn't seem like Christmas in Virginia without Oyster Stew
and Smithfield Ham biscuits! I realize now that I should have only
gotten 1/4 pound!! Oh well... it can be frozen. I noticed that the
store had an unusually large supply of cakes and pies and specialty
cookies... a lot of which will end up either sold at deep discounts
after Christmas, or... donated to the local soup kitchen. So the
homeless and hungry will eat well next week! For that, we can be thankful!!

We're planning a very low-key holiday this year. I've planned brunch
for Christmas Day, and DS and his son will come over. But we're not
planning on any traveling, and I am actually happy to spend a few
relaxing days with DH just staying home. He will be expanding our
wireless network in the house so there aren't any dead zones - I'm
looking forward to that!! (Did I say relaxing? By the time he is done
with this, he'll be anything but relaxed!!) There are a few technical
mysteries to be resolved, but I'm confident he can do it.

Meanwhile, my lacemaking has taken a back-seat for the past month or
so! In October, we lost our precious old kitty (cancer), and I grieved
as though he were my own child!! Finally, I could not stand the void
any longer, and began to explore the cat rescue sources on the
internet. I finally went to our local animal shelter, and there spotted
a precious kitten. But, I knew DH was opposed to having another cat (he
commented that having pets makes it difficult to be spontaneous with
travel...). So, I did not adopt him on the spot. But several days
later, when I could not get him out of my mind, I went back, and he was
still there!!! I was elated, and adopted him right then and there!
We've had him for a month, and he has survived neutering and all of his
shots, and at his last visit to the vet, he had gained a pound and a
half - in just one month!! He will be a big boy... And he is such a
love-muffin!! HOWEVER, we dare not put up a Christmas Tree, because he
would destroy it in fairly short order. Next year, he should be more
subdued. Meanwhile, he keeps us highly amused. And BTW... DH is
as smitten with him as I am, so all is well in that respect.

Mr. Giggs has a favorite spot in the house. It is at the window seat
which looks out at several bird feeders. My lace pillow is beside it,
and takes advantage of the light. So, while I make lace, he either
sleeps or watches the birds. Giggs is pronounced Jiggs... he has
this name because, quite frankly, he is a Gigolo!

Hope everyone celebrates this season in the way that pleases them the
most! I wish good health and, considering the financial climate, a
reasonable measure of solvency to everyone!!

Our families are also very far away. I usually make a log, made creme brulee
instead this year. I think one is as decadent and indulgent as the other. I
only make them at Christmas.
On Christmas eve, I put out nuts, a big cheese board, crackers and breads,
veggies, ect and we grazed. Cooked a lot next day. But the nice thing about
being home, with no guests is taking a nap when you want and delaying dinner if
you want. And I did.

I've read 2 Ruth Fielding books, and worked on my shawl. There are 16 pattern
pieces, I have 5 left! Ruth Feilding was a series written in the 1910's -
1930's for girls. There are 30 books, we've managed to get all but the last 8.
It's easy reading, perfect for lying in front of the fireplace.

DH and oldest DD, (who works at a Starbucks branch inside a department store
and says they are very, very busy) are off to work, I'm going to do laundry,
clay, lace, and write thank you notes.

[lace-chat] Christmas Tree Festival - a Lace Tree

2007-12-07 Thread Lynne Cumming
Apologies for double posting but I know there are local lacemakers who
only subscribe to one or other of the lists!

My class has been busily making lace for a tree to put in the local
Christmas Tree Festival in the parish church. I went down tonight to set
it up and was quite pleased with the finished article. I bought a 3 foot
black tree and added a set of lights and all the lace we had made. Our
youngest lacemaker in the class is 12 and she was thrilled to see her lace
put on display. While I was setting up and wandering round afterwards I
heard quite a few complimentary comments about the lace. There is no
competition element this year they are purely for the fun of it. There are
57 trees throughout the church. Tomorrow and Sunday the church will be
open to view, if the weather is good enough the tower will be open so you
can climb up and view the area as well. Sunday evening there will be a
service of celebration and we all get to take the trees down afterwards.
The church is C14th and needs a lot of repairs so this festival raises
 money for that.

Any lace makers in the area would be welcome - refreshments are available!

What a diverse group we are! I had no idea that December 20th begins the
Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which forbids eating and drinking during

luncheon at this time of year does not accommodate our Muslim employees'
beliefs, perhaps the Grill House can hold off on serving your meal until the
end of the party - or else package everything up for you to take home in
a little foil doggy bag. Will that work? Meanwhile, I've arranged for
members of Weight Watchers to sit farthest from the dessert buffet and
pregnant women will get the table closest to the toilets, Gays are
allowed to sit with each other, Lesbians do not have to sit with gay
men, each will have their own table. Yes, there will be flower
arrangements for the gay men's table too. To the person asking
permission to cross dress - no cross dressing allowed. We will have
booster seats for short people. Low fat food will be available for those
on a diet. We cannot control the salt used in the food we suggest those
people with high blood pressure taste the food first.. There will be
fresh fruits as dessert for Diabetics, the restaurant cannot supply No

Vegetarian I've had it with you people !!! We're going to keep
this party at the Grill House whether you like it or not, so you can sit
quietly at the table furthest from the grill of death, as you so
quaintly put it, you'll get your salad bar, including organic
tomatoes, But you know tomatoes have feeling too, They scream when you
slice them. I've heard them scream. I'm hearing the scream right NOW!! I
hope you all have a rotten holiday, drink drive and die.

Dear Arachne Member,

After a lovely Christmas party with a group of lacemakers, the day ended on a
wonderful note with a beautiful Battenberg lace heart and a fantastic lace
card in my mail box. Thank you Jane Swanson. The heart is gold and is now
hanging on the glass door of my wall unit in the Lounge room as it is far too
nice to put on the tree. The card is equally beautiful with a punched lace
design on the front, very hard to explain and I have not done it justice.

[lace-chat] Christmas story

2005-11-26 Thread Carol Melton

A little holiday fun.
Carol Melton
Arizona, USA

Subject: Christmas with Louise

This is an article submitted to a 1999 Louisville Sentinel contest to
find

out who had the wildest Christmas dinners. This won first prize.

~Christmas With Louise~

As a joke, my brother used to hang a pair of panty hose over his
fireplace

before Christmas. He said all he wanted was for Santa to fill them. What
they say about Santa checking the list twice must be true because every
Christmas morning, although Jay's kids' stockings were overflowed, his
poor

pantyhose hung sadly empty.

One year I decided to make his dream come true. I put on sunglasses and
went

in search of an inflatable love doll. They don't sell those things at
Walmart. I had to go to an adult bookstore downtown.

If you've never been in an X-rated store, don't go. You'll only confuse
yourself. I was there an hour saying things like, What does this do?
You're
kidding me! Who would buy that? Finally, I made it to the inflatable
doll

section.

I wanted to buy a standard, uncomplicated doll that could also
substitute as
a passenger in my truck so I could use the car pool lane during rush
hour.

Finding what I wanted was difficult. Love Dolls come in many different
models. The top of the line, according to the side of the box, could do
things I'd only seen in a book on animal husbandry. I settled for
Lovable
Louise. She was at the bottom of the price scale. To call Louise a doll
took

a huge leap of imagination.

On Christmas Eve and with the help of an old bicycle pump, Louise came
to

life.

My sister-in-law was in on the plan and let me in during the wee morning
hours. Long after Santa had come and gone, I filled the dangling
pantyhose
with Louise's pliant legs and bottom. I also ate some cookies and drank
what
remained of a glass of milk on a nearby tray. I went home, and giggled
for a

couple of hours.

The next morning my brother called to say that Santa had been to his
house

and left a present that had made him VERY happy but had left the dog
confused. She would bark, start to walk away, then come back and bark
some

more.

We all agreed that Louise should remain in her panty hose so the rest
of the
family could admire her when they came over for the traditional
Christmas

dinner.

My grandmother noticed Louise the moment she walked in the door. What
the

hell is that? she asked.

My brother quickly explained, It's a doll.

Who would play with something like that? Granny snapped.

I had several candidates in mind, but kept my mouth shut.

Where are her clothes? Granny continued.

Boy, that turkey sure smells nice Gran Jay said, to steer her into the
dining room.

But Granny was relentless. Why doesn't she have any teeth?

Again, I could have answered, but why would I? It was Christmas and no
one
wanted to ride in the back of the ambulance saying, Hang on Granny,
hang

on!

My grandfather, a delightful old man with poor eyesight, sidled up to
me and

said, Hey, who's the naked gal by the fireplace?

I told him she was Jay's friend.

A few minutes later I noticed Grandpa by the mantel, talking to Louise.
Not
just talking, but actually flirting. It was then that we realized this
might

be Grandpa's last Christmas at home.

The dinner went well. We made the usual small talk about who had died,
who
was dying, and who should be killed, when suddenly Louise made a noise
like
my father in the bathroom in the morning. Then she lurched from the
panty
hose, flew around the room twice, and fell in a heap in front of the
sofa.

The cat screamed. I passed cranberry sauce through my nose, and Grandpa
ran
across the room, fell to his knees, and began administering
mouth-to-mouth

resuscitation. My brother fell back over his chair and wet his pants.

Granny threw down her napkin, stomped out of the room, and sat in the
car.

It was indeed a Christmas to treasure and remember.

Later in my brother's garage, we conducted a thorough examination to
decide
the cause of Louise's collapse. We discovered that Louise had suffered
from

a hot ember to the back of her right thigh.

Fortunately, thanks to a wonder drug called duct tape, we restored her
to

perfect health!

[lace-chat] Christmas

2004-12-25 Thread Pauline
Dear Friends,

I hope you have all had a lovely Christmas day, or holiday, however you are
spending it.

Mine began, when a girlfriend and I went to Midnight Mass, at a very
beautiful and rural small church, not our local church, but one we have been
attending for several years now. It is a ten minute drive from us, down a
lonely little lane, they continue with the traditional English Mass service
by candlelight, which in itself is quite lovely, but more so, as the walls
and ceiling are hand painted, (quite unusual for low Church of England),
which looks even lovelier in the flickering light.
(Having only just returned from a few days in Prague, the decoration in our
church is very mild in comparison of the beautiful Cathedral and churches we
visited there. The trip, was my husband and my, early Christmas present from
our son, the trip to Prague, which was breath takingly beautiful, and one we
shall remember for a very long time).
We have spent today, the three of us together, and enjoyed opening all the
presents, having put the turkey in the oven first thing. Lots of lovely
surprises in the form of DVD's for me of Opera and ballet and other
classical music, plus some super books, wonderful, and an enormous Thomas
Kinkade Snow house, with all kinds of different lights and T.K. tells a
Christmas story, no I don't have to have the story on all the time!!
We enjoyed our dinner of turkey, chestnut stuffing, roast vegetables and
brussel sprouts, bread sauce and home made cranberry and orange relish with
port, no room yet for Christmas pudding!!!
Lots of phone calls to and from family and friends, what more could one wish
for, only that everyone could be as happy as we are today, but sadly a
friends Husband died on my birthday the 23rd. So we have thought about her
very much at this time, and our heart goes out to her.

Tomorrow is Boxing Day, and we shall celebrate at home but with friends
joining us for the day, making 7 of us, we will have all kinds of salad
dishes, fruits and nuts, and raclette cheese, which we all cook at the table
ourselves, and adding meat or salad or savoury items to the cooked cheese,
with some hot dishes, of jacket potatoes, and sweet potato with melted
marshmallows on top, cold salmon mousse, pineapple mousse, sweet pastries
and icecream, so not too much work to do, just preparing the table, which
takes the time, oh and not forgetting the Christmas crackers to pull, which
have gifts inside, a funny motto and funny paper hats.

For those of you on your own this Christmas, I hope this gives you something
to read that will make you smile, ( a bit like me with eating since my mouth
cancer, it is limited, but I enjoy seeing everyone else eating), likewise
encourage more of our friends to write of their lovely day, for those of you
to also enjoy, special times are to share.

Oh I nearly forgot, although it did not settle, it snowed heavily on and off
during the morning, now was that planning

Well, Christmas has partly started here in the UK with the christmas Blue

Tomorrow Christmas really gets going with carols from Kings - or, the

[lace-chat] Christmas Poem

2004-12-11 Thread David Collyer
A Politically Correct Christmas Poem

Twas the night before Christmas and Santa's a wreck...
How to live in a world that's politically correct?
His workers no longer would answer to Elves,
Vertically Challenged they were calling themselves.
And labor conditions at the North Pole,
were alleged by the union, to stifle the soul.

Four reindeer had vanished without much propriety,
released to the wilds, by the Humane Society.
And equal employment had made it quite clear,
that Santa had better not use just reindeer.
So Dancer and Donner, Comet and Cupid,
were replaced with 4 pigs, and you know that looked stupid!

The runners had been removed from his beautiful sleigh,
because the ruts were deemed dangerous by the EPA,
And millions of people were calling the Cops,
when they heard sled noises upon their roof tops.
Second-hand smoke from his pipe, had his workers quite frightened,
and his fur trimmed red suit was called unenlightened.

To show you the strangeness of today's ebbs and flows,
Rudolf was suing over unauthorized use of his nose.
He went to Geraldo, in front of the Nation,
demanding millions in over-due workers compensation.

So...half of the reindeer were gone, and his wife
who suddenly said she'd had enough of this life,
joined a self help group, packed and left in a whiz,
demanding from now on that her title was Ms.

And as for gifts...why, he'd never had the notion
that making a choice could cause such commotion.
Nothing of leather, nothing of fur...
Which meant nothing for him or nothing for her.
Nothing to aim, Nothing to shoot,
Nothing that clamored or made lots of noise.
Nothing for just girls and nothing for just boys.
Nothing that claimed to be gender specific,
Nothing that's warlike or non-pacifistic.

No candy or sweets...they were bad for the tooth.
Nothing that seemed to embellish upon the truth.
And fairy tales...while not yet forbidden,
were like Ken and Barbie, better off hidden,
for they raised the hackles of those psychological,
who claimed the only good gift was one ecological.

No baseball, no football...someone might get hurt,
besides - playing sports exposed kids to dirt.
Dolls were said to be sexist and should be passe.
and Nintendo would rot your entire brain away.

So Santa just stood there, disheveled and perplexed,
he just couldn't figure out what to do next?
He tried to be merry he tried to be gay,
but you must have to admit he was having a very bad day.
His sack was quite empty, it was flat on the ground,
nothing fully acceptable was anywhere to be found.

Something special was needed, a gift that he might,
give to us all, without angering the left or the right.
A gift that would satisfy - with no indecision,
each group of people in every religion.
Every race, every hue,
everyone, everywhere...even you!
So here is that gift, it's price beyond worth...
MAY YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONES, ENJOY PEACE ON EARTH

[lace-chat] Christmas trees etc

2004-11-25 Thread A Thompson
Angela coming briefly out of lurkdom - being very busy at present writing two
books, not my choice but could not refuse. At this time of year I give my
Victorian Christmas talk, illustrated with tales of Christmas customs, reading
from my Grandmother's Diary, and my dressing up in her clothes. Always goes
down well when I produce the 'split' drawers.

In my research on Christmas customs I discovered that the original Christmas
tree is supposed to have been discoverd by Martin Luther when he saw the stars
twinkling through a tree in the forest on Christmas Eve. This is why the
Lutheran type churches do not have coloured lights. When my late friend Pat
and I went to a Bavarian Christmas some years ago in the Black Forest, we
attended a Protestant Church service on Christmas Eve. The church was plain
except for a large tree. Not until a special part of the service was the tree
suddenly ablaze with white lights. We went in a procession round the village,
each carrying a lighted candle.

St Nicholas was the patron saint of children. He had resurrected three little
boys from an awful death and brought them back to life as a miracle. He was
also kind to orphan girls. Because they had no money for a dowry, they could
not marry. St Nicholas collected money for the orphan girls, but not wishing
them to know where the money came from, climbed on the roof and dropped it
down the chimney!! So there you are, but I think the reindeer came later.

If I don't have time for any more before Christmas, my best wishes to everyone
- I am still reading all the digests.

Tamara, by the 1740s, tons of German immigrants were making their way from
the port in Philadelphia, west to the head of the Shenandoah Valley, and
then south as far as Salisbury, NC. That is how those pre-Revolutionary War
towns in the Shenandoah were settled. You live in one of them! Look in
your Lexington telephone directory at all the German names! (And Scots.)

My Swiss Huguenot ancestors came from Basle down the Rhine to Rotterdam,
took ship to Cowes, England, took another ship to Philadelphia, travelled
down the Valley to the Calf Pasture River, a little west of Lexington, and
settled there for awhile before moving on west in Augusta County. So did my
Scots ancestors. Look at the interesting placenames along the Valley road.

[lace-chat] Christmas tree in the US

2004-11-24 Thread Lynn Carpenter
http://www.historychannel.com/exhibits/holidays/christmas/trees.html

I've browsed through several websites, many of which seem to have lifted
their text wholesale from somewhere, and a good chunk of them point to
Prince Albert's tree.

I can believe that -- England and English customs had a certain amount of
snob appeal, but more importantly, Queen Victoria lived in an age that
saw the beginnings of (relatively) quick communications and quick travel.
So word of what was fashionable could spread more quickly and easily than
ever before.

There was a book I read a review of, detailing inventions like electric
lighting and the telephone, that were developed during Victoria's reign,
and I dearly wish I could remember its name, and read the darn book!

A bit early for the 25th, but here in Cooma we had a really
good dump of snow yesterday, and for the first time in the
six years we've been here, it's still thick on the ground this
morning, and still sitting on the limbs of my cypress trees,
like giant Christmas trees!

At least when it melts it will be some moisture into the ground -
we've almost forgotten what rain is. This is also the first time
in six years we've had kangaroos invading our grounds at
night, and I've been forced to close my big iron gate to keep
them out.

Re: [lace-chat] Christmas on the cheap!

2003-11-24 Thread Linda Walton
Dear Lynn, and Lace-makers,

So what have your favorite Christmas gifts been, that didn't cost much?

Time and energy! (It's the thought that counts . . . !)

The best ones I've received all seem to have been occasions when others have
really considered what was getting in my way, and cleared it away for me.
The gifts of freedom, and peace of mind.

Such as when I was feeling low, having come out of hospital with strict
orders to rest, but had to try to do it looking at a home that was a mess:
my friend went into the kitchen to make me a hot drink, and didn't go home
until she'd cleared a mountain of washing up and an acre of sticky surfaces.
Such as taking dictation when I was weary and arthritic, but had a mountain
of paperwork looming over me. Such as helping me to finish cherished
projects that were becoming impossible because something had cropped up.
Such as the gift of portions of their own home-made food for the two of us,
and sincere good wishes, so that we felt part of their festivities. Such as
anything home-made - and this includes letters. People's time is in such
short supply these days, that this shows me that I'm really valued,
(particularly letters of thanks, which I always treasure and re-read).

Here's a way I've used of cutting costs, if you know you can give the same
thing to several different people. Get packs of various nice things to have
in the bath - fizzy bath salts, scented tealights (and matches), wrapped
sweeties, and so on, (preferably at sale time, but I appreciate that it may
be too late for that, this year.) Divide them up so that you put one of
each thing aside for each person. Wrap them up separately and then pack
each person's collection into a single container - half the fun is in taking
off the paper and finding lots of surprises. (I save any little boxes and
the undamaged parts of any pretty wrappers I receive during the year.) Add
a note with the instructions for a luxurious bath. ('Lock yourself in
bathroom; run hot bath; light candle; drop bath bomb into the water; get in
and soak while eating chocolates . . .', that sort of thing.) You may have
to add the gift of baby-sitting or something so that your present can be
really enjoyed, but that will just make it all the more appreciated.

Finally, my sister is a teacher, and finds herself inundated with small -
but no doubt pricey - objects, every Christmas and Summer. At her school,
they're trying to persuade parents to contribute time instead: such as
helping with school events and outings, when as many extra pairs of willing
eyes and hands are beyond price. Alternatively, ask what's needed - those
bits and pieces you were going to throw away might be just what they want
for craft projects, or dressing-up, or wet playtimes.

Hope these ideas help you to be creative,
Linda Walton,

and the Sun has shone all the time. Hurray!).

[lace-chat] Christmas on the Cheap

2003-11-23 Thread Dmt11home
My cousin has come up with a cheap but I hope, desirable gift idea. I
mentioned to him at one point that I had been reading my mother's diary that she kept
in 1936 when she was in high school. It is quite a delightful account of
movies and parties attended, and teenage concerns during the 30's. It also
describes the activities of her sisters and parents. Now that generation is all gone,
except for one member whose memory is ureliable. He decided he would like to
have a photocopy of the diary and give copies to his sisters for Christmas.

One gift I was given (some 40 years ago and newly married) was from my
brother (a young, single male with car insurance due Dec. 1) it was a
machine made lace table cloth, round and probably the smallest size. I
still have it and use it on occasion even if my table is larger now. I
believe the next year he gave me a nice wooden plaque clock, it is hanging
above the computer as I write this.

I don't care what the economists say (an economic recovery that started in
November 2001? In what alternate universe?), Christmas is going to be a
bit on the lean side in this neck of the woods.

So what have your favorite Christmas gifts been, that didn't cost much?

One of my personal favorites has been an Exacto knife set, given me by my
brother. I have solved more how can I cut this dilemmas with that
 knife!

Others I can think of were a big box of miscellaneous food items given to
my husband by his aunt (my husband is the cook of the household), and two
pairs of excellent sock given me by my sister-in-law.

 How about yours?

That reminds me of a similar gift in our family. Our Mother
was in her final months battling cancer, and one of my
sisters decided to take a big box of family pictures
(everybody has one of THOSE!) whenever she spent time with
Mom. They would go through the pictures, and Mom would say,
Oh, that's and my sister would make notes, ask
questions, etc. It became a very pleasant time for my Mom,
and she was able to remember her life, her family, and the
happy times gone by. She died the week before Thanksgiving,
and by Christmas, my sister had organized all the pictures,
had atttached Mom's comments, and had had the whole lot put
together in the form of a pictoral history. She had this
reproduced, and gave each of her sisters two copies for
Christmas. This insures that each of our children (we each
have two...) would eventually have a copy of this wonderful
record.

It was time consuming, but the time was so good for our
Mother, and for my sister. And the result is something I'll
always treasure.

 Greetings Arachnians,

I've been selecting three patterns to use as Christmas ornament gifts this
year, and realized no one has said anything about exchanging ornaments.

Does anyone want to do it? We have one month before they would have to be
in the mail. I would suggest thinking about flat ornaments that can be
tucked in a card and mailed for basic postage. That keeps the mailing
cost
within reason, yet gives a bit of fun.

Remember, if you sign up, you do need to send one. A recent message on
this
list told about the experience of not receiving one. It can be very dis-
 appointing.

If interested, send me an email:

 How many (up to 3)
 Willing to mail overseas?

You will be paired with a partner for the each exchange. It is up to each
pair to communicate. It is not a mystery exchange.

It might be fun, also, to take a picture of the ornaments before mailing
and send to Lori. She might be willing to put them on her webpage for us
all to see like she did the bookmarks a couple years ago. Lori?

 Happy lacing,

 Alice,

Before you let Heather (Jazmin) take part, let me tell you that she was my
secret pal a couple of years ago in the last exchange I took part in and
didn't send the last parcel. Neither did she respond about my last
parcel. I wanted to let you know. I may have already told you before. I
don't want to be vindictive but don't want anyone else to be left out.

A lady phoned in to our local radio station this morning to say that she'd
bought some items in Boots (a large chemist chain) yesterday and they were
put into a plastic carrier bag with reindeer and snow on. She presumes
they've started the Christmas campaign already - well yesterday was exactly
6 months to the final shopping day before Christmas!
