[lace-chat] Re: Tax Feedom Day

2004-05-30 Thread Tamara P. Duvall
Today is the first day, for the average UK taxpayer, when you can keep
the
money you earn - every penny you've earned up to yesterday has been
paid to
the government as tax.
You mean, for *5 full months* you've been working for the government? I
knew that Brit taxes were ridiculous, but didn't know the extent...

Tax Freedom Day this year is six weeks later than this year in the USA.
We've had a *tax-cut*... Might not have matched the increased cost of
day-to-day expenses, but I dare say it did something to improve our
statistics (as above) :)

And, with our dollar plunging, and the interest rates ditto, my
invested "nest egg" didn't produce enough interest to *merit* taxation;
a happy thought... :) Since I don't have school-aged children (who
might profit from those taxes), and since I don't plan on getting sick
(a national health system, *if* we had any, might have profited from
taxes also); since I'm not worried about my pension fund being halved
(don't qualify for Social Security; haven't worked enough)... I'm in
clover, and in total sympathy with you about your outrageous taxes...
:)

There's a new book on Tonder lace coming out in Denmark... 4 yrs ago,
it would have cost me $15. Today, it'll cost me $30. Now, *that*,
really does irritate me

Hello all,

Reading about tax freedom day I just had to look it up as I know the taxes
in my old homeland are very high compared
In Sweden you have to work to the end of July for taxfreedom day and the
same for Denmark.

2004-05-31 Thread Scotlace
And it is not just income tax which has increased. Council tax has increased
by more than the rate of inflation each year for the last several years. I
think mine has nearly doubled in the years since I retired but of course my
pension hasn't doubled in the same time :-( Many pensioners are finding it next
to impossible to meet increased council taxes. We wouldn't mind quite as
much if our various taxes gave us improved services in health, education, public
transport, policing etc but they don't.

On top of that there have been great increases in indirect taxation - petrol
has been mentioned, cigarettes and alcohol have also been hit and there are
more. the rationale behind petrol taxes is they will force us onto public
transport but efficient, clean and safe transport systems are not in place.
Without my car I couldn't attend lace classes (one hour's drive away), lace days
(either half an hour or three quartes of ha hour away) and many other things.
And all the indirest taxation hits those on the lowest incomes hardest. Farm
labourers, for example, are poorly paid and yet must have a car as many of them
live in areas with no public transportion in place.

Hello all,
Just thought I'd check when our tax freedom day comes. We haven't reached
it yet. For the average Canadian, tax freedom day comes June 28th and
according to one website I visited our family's personal day comes July
1st. Half the year working for someone one else. I do appreciate the many
benefits we receive such as our medical system, but still - 6 months!

Same here. I miss Polish busses and trains *so much*!! The bus stops
not only tell you which buses stop there and when, they even tell you
the whole route of each of those busses, and many even have a map with
all bus routes in the city marked on it! Here bus stops tell you
*nothing* and are really hard to see besides. It took me 5 hours to get
from downtown LA to Pasadena once!
