Rather than use a global I would prefer to place all the parameters as
constants on one block diagram. You can bundle them and output from the
VI as a single cluster; then you can Unbundle by Name which makes the
using code very readable. If you need to change a parameter you can
simply type in the new value and you don't have to remember to Make
Current Values Default.

You stated you would never write to the global programmatically. Using
this technique it would be impossible to write the parameter values
programmatically, so it would be immediately clear to anyone else who
looked at your code that the parameters were not being written
programmatically.

Hi

I have two remote systems which are supposed to remain connected with VI
Server. Sometimes, when one computer starts LabVIEW and tries to
connect, it gets error 63, connection refused by server. Since the
systems are remote, I'm having a hard time figuring out exactly what
causes the problem. The systems usually connect, so it should not be a
allow/deny problem or any other VI Server config problem.

Has anyone else seen similar problems or have some advice?

Unfortunately you can't. But (hopefully) the best thing about this, is
that now
that you know, you probably won't do this again. There is no substitute
for experience.
(except maybe someone else's experience and this forum ;-

Perhaps you can establish a method of protecting these based on the File
Name. I modified
a Labview VI that I found in the wild to programmatically password
protect all sub VI's of
some Main VI, based on the vi's name. For example use a constant prefix
followed by the 1st,
3rd, and 5th letters in the title of the VI. This is not what I did, but
I think, you get
the picture. This way you would only need to look at the title bar to
recall the Password
AND all VI's are different, because if you use a common password, once
you unlock one, the
password cache gets updated and any VI's protected with that common PW
are also unlocked.
(at least in LV6.1 and previously)

Obviously, this is not the most secure method, but as was already
stated, the only positively
secure method is to use save as... and save without the block diagram.
Caution here though
also, once you do this you can never recover the block diagram either,
although you should also
save the backup original with the diagram to a different secure
location.

This is a great idea. The '1%' that you left out has to be cost. Lets
face it...
PXI is expensive. Your approach has the ability to be a much more cost
effective

could be
the trade off...
Its not my intent to start a new discussion branch here, but while COTS

George,
This probably won't help you, but for one project I've worked on we
replaced a big HP impedance analyzer by a function generator, a high

I need to measure the impedance (low frequency, low power) of up to 16
leads. So I need an impedance analyzer and a multiplexer. Currently we
have a GPIB controlled multiplexer and impedance analyzer, but would
like
a more compact system. Is there anyway to do this using PXI or SCXI so
that we can have a smaller package? I can't seem to find an impedance

WinXP also allows by right clicking and selecting properties a compatibility

your issue, but its a simple experiment.

The problem is actually an issue with a Microsoft support file rather than with

have XP Pro SP1 and I can execute the batch file manually any time without
errors but when I execute it from the Task Manager, whether I let it run at
the proper time or right-click and select Run, I get a dialog box that
says c:\windows\system32\svchost.exe The NTVDM CPU has encountered an
illegal instruction... If I comment out everything, I still get the same
error. The actual DOS window is completely blank meaning that probably
nothing was executed. Any ideas?

Anchor Window?

2004-04-24 Thread Mahoney, Richard C
I have an interesting question that has probably been asked and answered here before,
although
I personally don't recall seeing this.

When I start LV 7 Express on my Dell system running XP Pro, a small anchor dot (maybe
a ultra
small resized window maybe 5x5 pixels) just big enough that I can click on it opens in
the dead
center of my CRT. If I have another app as active like notepad (or anything), Clicking
on this
tiny spot highlights the LV icon in the task bar momentarily and then shifts focus to
Labview.

Has anyone seen this before, and if so, what is it? I've never seen this in any other
app.

A simple method that I use is to use the system exec command and issue the set
command from the dos prompt in win2k. From there you can pick off the username logged
into the computer. You can try this manually by going into the start and then run
menus of windows. Next, type command at the pop-up box. Once the dos shell name
comes up, type set. Look for username and you can do a match pattern off
username. I just tried this a moment ago and noticed that you can also see the
computer name as well. If command does not work with your version of windows, try
using cmd.

Is there a way to read from a LabVIEW executable any sort of value that
will
uniquely identify one particular computer? The computers will be from
unknown vendors, but all running some version of Windows.

MAC address of the ethernet card? Try ipconfig /all from a command prompt.
Obviously won't work if the ethernet card is swapped out at some point, so
whether it's useful or not depends on what you're actually wanting to do.

VI
and get out a wave form. Most of the
example programs show how to do this. But I want to just run the VI,
let
it complete, and then move on. But
when I stop writing the output, the signal goes away. Isn't there a
way
to load the buffer (circular Buffer)
on the MIO bd and let the HW take over and just keep outputting until
I
run a Stop analog output VI?

I know I can just run the output code in parallel with the other code
I'd like to execute, but, I'm thinking I
should be able to let the HW just do this. I'm relatively sure there
is
a way, but the solution escapes me.
Has anyone have info on this or have this type of code they would be

Also, What is the highest output Frequency with pretty good resolution
I
could possibly expect from this type
 of a config? I am using a PCI 6070E E series PCI bd. in a Win2k setup.

Subject: The Future of Igor and Info-LabVIEW Lists

Good afternoon, all. As you know, there have been a number of problems
which
have impacted the availability of the Igor and Info-LabVIEW mailing
lists
recently. I've asked the readers of both lists for their support in
moving
those lists to another server and in taking over the administrative
tasks
I've been performing.

As I fully expected, given the fine caliber of folks who use Igor and
LabVIEW, a number of folks threw their hats in the ring. I'd like to
start
by publicly thanking Michael Aivaliotis, Scott Hannahs, George Gatling
and
Arlen Walker for doing so. I'm quite sure that all of them are fully
capable
of taking on the job and making sure that it will all happen. I have
asked
Scott Hannahs to take the reins and he has not only agreed to do so, but
he
has agreed to take both mailing lists over!

The lists will be run via an OSX server, housed in a real machine room,
with
admins on the job to keep it all running smoothly, backup power and all
that
other good stuff (a far sight from my shoestring setup, that's for
sure!).

Scott and I are working the details of how we will manage the transfer.
Right now, our strawman plan goes something like this:

o Shut down subscriptions on my machine here to freeze the subscriber
list.
o Transfer that list to the machine at Scott's site (National High
Magnetic
Field Lab at Florida State University) and install it there (both sites
use
the same software, so that will be relatively straightforward).
o Announce the new email addresses and activate the lists at FSU.
o Set my machine here to forward list mail to the new addresses
(probably
active for 30-60 days or so).
o Turn off forwarding here and put an autoreply on those addresses
pointing
users to the new site (again, for some finite period of time).
o Shut down my machine (a 6100/60, ie 1st generation PowerPC, in case
you
were wondering).

We expect the move to happen some time the last week of March or first
week
of April as it stands right now. More details will follow as they become
available.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank some other folks who
help
out here: Brian Renken, who runs the info-labview.org website and Andrew
Johnson, who bought us the copy of LetterRip Pro which makes these lists
happen in the first place.

As I slowly fade from the scene, I'd also like to thank all of you for
making this a really great experience. Way back when I was a heavy Igor
and
LabVIEW user, the lists made a tremendous impact on my ability to do my
work
here. Time has marched on and I do different things now, but the value
of
user communities like these is clear and real. You all can give
yourselves a
big pat on the back for making that happen!

Take care...

RE: Teststand help

2004-02-04 Thread Mahoney, Richard C
In LabVIEW, there are TestStand Native VI's for:
Get Boolean, Set Boolean,
Get String Set String
Get Number, Set Number
Get Variant, Set Variant etc.
These are all available in the scalar, or array variety,
(and I've actually created multi-dimensional array VI's also.)

and these are available from the TestStand Pallet on the LV Block
Diagram and Front Panel
If these TestStand VI's are not available, you may need to either
reinstall TS,
or find the TS .llb on NI web site and download and copy it to the
vi.lib directory
under LV.

In TS, you need to wire a sequence reference in to the LV connector from
TS. You must enable
the Sequence reference check box in TS's Specify module dialog. Then use
the Seq Ref and wire
to the TS VI's and pass data back and forth at will.

The variable can be accessed via name stored on the Locals tab of any
sequence.
These are referenced by Locals.variablename in LV. actually, the
examples are quite
good for this detail...

LV Init files

2004-01-22 Thread Mahoney, Richard C
wirers;
I have a question that may be more of a windoze question than LV, but maybe, on the
chance that maybe LV has the power, here goes...

When I go to the File -- Open menu selection, (or the ... selection on the Block
diagram palette), the first thing I do every time to search
through the list of vi.'s (sometimes a substantial list) is to Change the files
displayed from small icon, to a detailed list and then I click on the date header to
sort by date modified (because, usually, I want to open files recently modified). Is
there a setting someplace, like an init file setting or a registry setting, that will
allow the file explorer window to open in this mode automatically?

I realize its only 2 more clicks per file open dialog, but over the course of the day
that could add up to 4 clicks ;-

Just trying to get more efficient!
