Hello Peter, others
you asked:
How do you see what your IP addresses are? Ifconfig not on the floppy.

  ip addr

pn] You wouldn't happen to know where they buried the equivalent command
on a 2.4 (SuSE 7.1) kernel, would ya?
the ip command and the equivalent tools are in the package
iproute2.(rpm)
this is not part of the personal version of suse linux but is
provided with the professional version.
You can however get this packet from the suse ftp server.

As a short overview I put a short overview of the ip commands on

here are also some links to more extensive explanations.

get this from the ifconfig command, but only after wading through the 411

Re: [Leaf-user] FW: Dachstien Documentation Idiosyncrasies

2001-12-15 Thread Charles Steinkuehler

I did however have some minor confusion which might assist
 other who are also confused.

First was that when I looked at the weblet website for the
first time it showed me an error on the RAM Disk which I
later learned was not actually an error but the fact that I
had the CD mounted and it thought that the disk was full.
When I unmounted the CD the error went away. Not a problem
per say but it caused me a half hour of grief trying to
figure out why I had an error.

This has been mentioned before, but I've so-far forgotten to add it to the
bug/feature list...it's on there now, so if someone doesn't beat me to it,
I'll update the CGI disk checking script to ignore CD-ROM's when I've got
some spare time...

Second on the dachstien-CD-v1.0.2.iso image it indicated
from the contents that both the OpenSSH and Koon's older
(!!-Depricated-!!) version was on the CD but in reality only
the OpenSSH version was on the CD which didn't seem to be a
problem at first until I tried to connect via Putty (in
windows) which does not support OpenSSH. Please correct me
if I am wrong but it wouldn't seem to work for me and on the
Putty site they claim they do not support OpenSSH. If
someone has another Windows OpenSSH compatible option I
would be interested but I really like Putty. I was also
concerned about OpenSSH because of a recent CAIC bulletin I
received that indicated security problems. Not a problem
for me because I only use it no my internal net but could
use a look by someone smarter than me to see if this version
 is affected.

What sort of problems are you having? I have absolutely NO problems using
putty and OpenSSH (as provided on the Dachstein CD). I use putty daily for
adminstering my various routers servers. I'm running release 0.51.

Third, In the Dachstein CD Readme.txt file in the section on
snip
Yes, putting example lrpkg.cfg and pkgpath.cfg files on the CD is already on
the todo list for 1.0.3.

Charles, Regarding all this information I would be glad to
mark up your readme file and forward it back to you to
with the changes I have outlined above. It is the least I
can do to assist in this project which has been a great
benefit to both my learning of routers and networking and
better use of my existing cable modem connection.

This would be very helpful. I'm short of time at the moment, and have
so-far been unable to find the time to write current documentation for the
Dachstein releases in general, and the CD-ROM version in particular, so any
and all contributions to documentation are greatly appreciated.

Re: [Leaf-user] Datchstein CD 1.0.2 and pppoe

2001-12-15 Thread Charles Steinkuehler

In Dachstein cd, the pppoe package contains an init script which calls
 adsl-start
I used to call adsl-start from the if_up function in the network.conf but
 now that
Charles has some support for pppoe , I try to follow him closely.

I'm not sure it wouldn't be better to call adsl-start from if_up, and make
ppp0 an interface configured by the standard newtork scripts. I only
support one PPPoE connection, and it's in France (I'm in the US), so I don't
really like to 'experiment' with the system (it's too easy to leave it in a
state where it won't connect to the network at all). This also means I
don't see any of the issues caused by the various ISP's doing PPPoE...I only
deal with one ISP, and a test-network using the Roaring Penguin PPPoE
server.

I'm open to suggestions on how best to integrate PPPoE support to the
existing network config scripts...

Just a note of experience, to get the scripts to pick up the ip address
assigned by the pppoe server I had to put a 15 second delay after adsl-start
in network.conf. This was on EigerStein2BETA.exe.

Re: [Leaf-user] Resolution: Why cant I ping on Dachstein rc2?

2001-12-15 Thread Dr. Richard W. Tibbs

I ended up downloading natsemi.c:v1.11 11/7/2001 from
ftp://www.scyld.com/pub/network/natsemi.c
Had to compile under a 2.2.x kernel -- Suse 7.0 seemed to work --- since
gcc is not on the Dachstein floppy image.
If Charles the sourceforge folks have positive results wherever they
test these things, I would recommend updating the Dachstien distribs to
include the newer natsemi.o
Never saw a fa311.o in my travels.

Here is what finally worked :

I downloaded and compiled the latest natsemi.c (actually did this on the
 Suse box),
put the new natsemi.o on a floppy and mounted it on the dachstein box.
Once I replaced the older natsemi.o under /lib/modules,
backed up my ramdisk (options 5 modules),
 rebooted and all is well.
 Whew, what a marathon :-)

Again thanks for the superlative response to my problems

Well, you obviously deserved it. You went and did
something awful crafty, building your own driver.
Now I guess the rest of us could benefit if you made
that available to Charles or the sourceforge site.
I guess the newer fa311's need it, and they are popular.

I got left out of the thread Why didn't the fa311.o
file work for you? Isn't that for that card? I found
a reference to natsemi.o myself, but I didn't think it
would take precedence over a driver named after the card.

Sorry I didn't say this before, but I am using the Dachstien floppy boot

Can you point me to the init and adsl-start scripts somewhere on the web?
Is there a pppoe module or package that is needed?
I am connecting to Bellsouth's DSL service through an Alcatel Speed

Works greate thru my Suse box with roaring penguin, and of course via

I am kinda new to LRP, used it long time ago for a short time.
I would like to combine DSL and Cable into a single bandwidth. I have a
Pentium 100 with 32 MB and 3 NICs. One KNE110 and two SMC 1211TX. I
downloaded and created a LRP disk from Charles website. File
Eigerstein_img_eigerstien.exe 2.2.16 Kernel. I have read some of the
documentation on c0wz and steunkuehler. I dont really understand it. I
also saw stuff on LRP Virtual Servers, would that apply in any
 way? I would
like some advice on what direction to go. Should I use static floating
routes or do I need to install an aditional module on my LRP
 disk. I can do
basic stuff like install modules and nic drivers. I dont need firewall
support, so I think all I have to do is change that line in network.conf
IPFILTER_SWITCH to =none. Not sure what else I need to do.

 Thanks for the help,
 David

I find it interesting that OpenSSH works with Putty when
they explicitly say on their website that they do NOT
support OpenSSH unless Jacques Nilo's version of OpenSSH

Putty. It may be that we are not getting all the features
of OpenSSh we think we are getting. Don't know, and in my
case (closed internal network no ssh from external) I don't
really care. It is more of a learning experience then a
necessity for me. Still interested if the CIAC bulletin has
caught anyone's attention to check if we have a security
 hole. The website is
 http://www.ciac.org/ciac/bulletins/m-026.shtml

Well,

a) you would have to be using multiple logins (which I think is true with
weblet)

b) an untrusted person would have to know or be able to set the password
for that account.

They rate it medium. For LEAF, I think it looks even less critical.

I think it is more important to not use login access from outside your
LAN at all anyway. If you want to come in from outside, use public-key
access.

The exact verbiage from the Putty website (could just be an
out of date FAQ - hey, how often could that happen?)
 http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/faq.html#A
 .1.2
A.1.2 Does PuTTY support reading OpenSSH or ssh.com SSHv2
 private key files?
Not at present. OpenSSH and ssh.com have totally different
formats for private key files, and neither one is
particularly pleasant, so PuTTY has its own. We do plan to
write a converter at some stage.

Seems pretty clear to me. They don't support the file format for OpenSSH
private key files. That would mean... don't try to create a v2 private
key file using OpenSSH and transfer it to a Winbox and expect to be able
to use it with Putty. Says nothing about compatibility with v1 private
key files, or with on-the-wire public key exchanges.
