Re: [leaf-user] distribution for flash + 2.4.20 + iptables (no shorewall)

2003-01-28 Thread David Ondzes
Hello Peter,

I have been looking for a similar answer but have yet
to find a good solution because I want to add a JVM to
my flash based linux. I think the best bet might be
LFS (Linux From Scratch)

PS - is there a way to turn off Shorewall or run my

 Bering? That would be fine.

[leaf-user] Anyone willing to share a Bering image with ide support ?

2003-01-16 Thread David Ondzes
Does anyone have a Bering image with ide support
included in it ? My target hardware doesn't have a
floppy drive or cdrom and I do not have any real linux
machines. I use VMWare to do any linux related work
and unforunetly VMWare doesn't support 1.68 size
floppies. If I could get a Bering image with ide then
I would just dd it to my CF card and I would be good
to go.

[leaf-user] wisp usb storage

2003-01-12 Thread David Ondzes
Is there a trick to usb storage under wisp ? I added the
following modules to the /modules directory. I know in
Bering the order of loading is important, is that also true
in wisp ? If so, how do I specify the order ?

usbcore.o
usb-uhci.o
scsi_mod.o
usb-storage.o
sd_mod.o

I downloaded them
http://leaf.sourceforge.net/devel/jnilo/bering/latest/module
s/
I wasn't actually sure if I get the .o files from 2.4.18 or
the 2.4.20 I choose 2.4.20.

I am trying to access my SanDisk SDDR-31 but the device
doesn't seem to be present.

I think you probably want the modules from
 wisp-dist_2469_modules.tar.gz at
 http://www.hazard.maks.net/wisp-dist/downloads/ .
 Looks
like all the usb modules are in there.

Pretty sure I check it, I found some but not all the
.o files it looks like I need.
# tar ztvf wisp-dist_2469_modules.tar.gz | grep usb-st
# tar ztvf wisp-dist_2469_modules.tar.gz | grep scsi_m
# tar ztvf wisp-dist_2469_modules.tar.gz | grep sd_m
#

Are usb-storage, scsi_mod and sd_m generic enough to
use from bering and use the rest from wisp-dist ?

The new build 2470(?) correctly created the devices
and fdisk was able to see the partition info. I did
have trouble trying to mount these devices (ntfla1
ntfla2). It could be because they were formated with
NTFS. I tried using fdisk to create a FAT12 partition
but had some errors and it failed. What is the best
way to proceed ? I ultimately would like to be able to

Makes sense unless you had the NT filesystem driver
 (ntfs.o) loaded, which seems unlikely.

No, I did not have ntfs.o loaded. fdisk did report the
filesystem as HPFS/NTFS (or maybe it was NTFS/HPFS). I
didn't realize they were the same. I assumed it was
NTFS because the DoC did have embedded WinNT running
on it. Do I need ntfs.o in order to wipe out the
filesystem ?

I tried using fdisk to create a FAT12 partition

How did it fail? Were you partitioning it under
 WISP? If so,
what modules were loaded at the time (lsmod) What
 were the error
messages? (How else do you expect us to google for
 answers? ;-)

I did not remember the exact error messages. What is
the best way to capture this info...nevermind I see
there is a script.lrp, I will install it as well.

Have you already tried Step 3 of the DoC Bering user
 guide chapter at:

http://leaf.sf.net/devel/jnilo/budiskonchip.html#AEN1268

Thanks for the pointer. I know for a fact I did see
the Possible DiskOnChip with unknown ChipID FF found
at 0xc8000 type messages at boot. I also know I did
not have the mkfs.msdos executable. I guess I need to
install mkdosfs.lrp and will do so.

One last question, what is the output (e.g. from
/var/log/syslog or the console) when the DoC-related
modules load?

I will capture it and command output tonight and send
a more informative message. Thanks for replying !

Sounds good. The most important part is that you
 see a
 line like this:

DiskOnChip 2000 found at address 0x_

that shows your DoC was recognized and that cat
 /proc/mtd
shows an mtd0 device with the correct size. If you
 can
read the partition table of the DoC using fdisk
 under WISP,
then all the driver modules should be fine and you
 can just
post the output from cat /proc/mtd so we know what
 type and
 size DoC it is.

I now have access to my target hardware. I am still
having trouble setting up the DoC. If possible I would
like to keep it original partition (NTFS) and play
around with the remaining space. Below is some of the
info you ask for.

# cat /proc/mtd
dev:size erasesize name
mtd0: 0480 2000 DiskOnChip 2000

# fdisk -l /dev/ntfla
Disk /dev/ntfla: 16 heads, 9 sectors, 1002 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 144 * 512 bytes

 Device BootStart End Blocks Id
System
/dev/ntfla1 * 1 98170627+ 7 OS/2
HPFS
/dev/ntfla2 * 982 1002 15121 DOS
12-bit FAT

When I try to mkfs.msdos /dev/ntfla2 I get errors on
the console. Even if I run mkfs in a ssh window the
errors still show up on the console. Neither script or
2 will capture them so I include the contents of
dmesg

Following is what I do to modify the initrd.
 - Rename the initrd.lrp to initrd.gz
 - Gunzip the inirtd.gz
 - Mount the initrd through loopback
 - Make the changes to the mounted initrd filesystem
 - Umount the initrd filesystem
 - Gzip it and change the name to initrd.lrp

Do these steps have to be done everytime you backup

Check contents of /etc/resolv.conf. If pump worked correctly it
should have updated with correct DNS settings.

resolv.conf is 8 bytes and contains search... Doesn't look like the modification I
made to ifup helped.

Re: [leaf-user] wisp and dns/dhcp

2002-08-19 Thread David Ondzes

I have two problem...

1) I can not ssh into my wisp box from the outside.

It looks like my problem.

2) I can not resolve hostnames from my wisp box.

Should dhcp supply my wisp box with dhs server and default gateway info ? Or should I
enter it with wdistconfig ?

I'm not sure I understand your problem exactly.

1) Where do you run ez-ipupdate?
2) From where you cannot ping?
3) To check whether SSH packets reach the WISP-Dist router, run tcpdump:
tcpdump -n port 22

Does the Partition check: look right? Should it
have hda: hda1
three times in succession? Should VFS report that
there were busy

I'm not sure if this is applicable, but please
remember there are two
different FAT partition table formats: the Floppy
partition table,
with one big partition on the whole device, and the
HDD partition
table, which includes four partitions (generally
referred to as
primary partitions).

Just a wild-a$$-guess, but you might get something
like the above if
your drive has a floppy partition table instead of a
HDD partition
table. What does fdisk -l /dev/hda show (dash
ell, not dash one)?

I too am trying to boot off a CF card in an IDE
adapters. My problems are happening much earlier. My
system will not even boot. I suspect it has to do the
with the format on CF card. Unfortunetly I do not have
a real unix envirnoment just a simulated Red Hat 7.2
using VMWare. I am accessing my CF card under Red Hat
using a SanDisk SDDR-31 USB card reader. And used
syslinux 1.52 from linux.

When I do fdisk -l /dev/sdb

Disk /dev/sdb: 1 heads, 16 sectors, 980 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16 * 512 bytes

   Device BootStart EndBlocks Id
System
/dev/sdb1 * 2 980 78321

Why is the start sector 2 and not 1 ? Could that be
the problem ?

2002-06-13 Thread David Ondzes

I have a compact flash to ide converter board and
would like to put a copy of Oxygen on a CF card and
use the board to boot but I am not exactly sure how.

I have connected my compact flash to my linux system
via a SanDisk usb writer (SDDR-31) and the system sees
it as /dev/sdb. I downloaded the latest Oxygen .bin
file and I tried using dd to write it

dd if=oxygen.bin of=/dev/sdb

When I print the partition table with fdisk it doesn't
look right; fdisk complains about different physical
and logical endings and about partitions not ending on
a cylinder boundry.

What am I doing wrong ? Is it even possible to get the
image to a cf card ?

[leaf-user] SSH via http ?

2002-05-24 Thread David Ondzes

I have seen a commercial product that lets you use a
browser to connect to a SSH server and get terminal
access. Does anyone know if there a similar type
application available for LEAF ?

The reason I ask is because my company only lets http
traffic pass through firewall (via a proxy server) and
it would be nice to be able to reach my machine at home.

[leaf-user] USB howto

2002-05-16 Thread David Ondzes

I am slowing making progress on getting Bering to do
what I need it to do...thanks to all of you.

How do I add USB support ? At first I just need it at
runtime for storage devices like disk-on-key and other
removable usb devices that look like drives under
Windows. It would be nice to boot off one of these
devices as well, but it is a lower priority.

I have read Steinkeuhler's LRP Hard Disk HOWTO and
understand the basics of what is needed. I have
already added ide support at boot and runtime. Now I
need some more details. What .o files do I need for
USB support ? The module configuration in lrcfg
mentions doing mount none /proc/bus/usb -t usbdevfs.
What does this do ? Where and how do I do it :) Are
there any HOWTOs or guides ?

Thanks in advance,
David

[leaf-user] leaf questions

2002-05-06 Thread David Ondzes

Hello All,

I am new to the list and leaf. I recently purchase a
thin client (XL 1000) see
http://www.computer-show.com/Modern/itemdesc.asp?CartId=242150STGZV10ic=SYS028tpc=
which I would like to run linux on. It is basically a
i386 machine with a 64m disk-on-chip and built in
ethernet. I understand the latest version of bering
includes drivers to recognize the DoC and I will start
playing with if I can get it to work.

I want to setup this box to be a headless server that
includes samba client, java runtime, sendmail, dhcp,
telnet server, and vnc. I know most of these package
exist for red hat debian, etc. Can I use them on a
LEAF system ? I like the idea of having everything on
the ramfs, less writes to my DoC.

Is possible to put my leaf image (in the case Bering)
on my FAT format DoC and have my system boot from it ?
Is it easy to take .rpm files and convert them to .lrp
files ?

Or should I format the DoC with a linux filesystem and
use it for storage of my LEAF image ?

Thanks in advance for your time.
David

[leaf-user] syslinux and pxe

2002-04-29 Thread David Ondzes

Hello All,

I am just getting started with LRP/LEAF and trying to
boot my box using PXE. I am trying to load a 2.9.8 LPR
idiot image and when my machine starts to boot it
say it doesn't have enough conventional memory; I
guess it needs 608k. I tried holding down the ctrl key
during the boot and it avoids the memory check but
doesn't boot. Is anyway around this ? Do newer version
of syslinux require less memory ?

Thanks in advance,
David
