[LU] Becchio Watch

2012-09-25 Thread Mark Smith
Have been interested in the Becchio debate and, because there are not many
trains to spot in my neck of the woods, decided to log his involvement. Gave
up at half time but here are the observations minute by minute.

1: throw from Byram midway in Everton half. Tried to chest down but lost
possession
1: throw from Byram right side of Penalty box. Lost possession theatrically
clutching his head for a few seconds until he saw the ref wasn't interested.
2: yet another Byram throw, he won free kick near halfway
3: out-jumped 2 defenders well in box from long free kick but could only
manage to head ball to keeper.
9: out-jumped by Felani from throw in by Byram
12: lost out chase with Distan to a ball played down right channel
13: brought down a free kick well with chest in area but lost out to
defender when it was on the deck
15: won a long ball with chest outside area but was deemed to have
fouled/backing in. Looked ok to me - maybe handball?
17: ball hit him on chest from a close range header near half way line-
couldn't do much about it
19: failed to keep a ball from going out of play for throw in - should have
done better
19: good control and lay off to Diouf outside box
25: received ball in left channel ran ball into box and shot at GK - was
deemed to be offside - tight
27 received ball in midfield good lay off and then had 3 more sharp complete
passes in a move that led to a free kick for us (obstruction)
32 lost header outside box
33 completed a decent lay off pass with his back to goal just outside box
34: won header from free kick - headed it towards wing but Everton defender
got there easily
35 long keeper clearance went toward him and a defender but both missed - he
flicked out a back heel but missed
37 involved in good play on right wing where he made 2 short sharp passes
and then made a good run into box
38 long ball which he battled for with Hettinger - won a throw in
39 won ball from GK at half way line
39 short 1-2 with Tonge outside box - his pass was a little heavy and Tonge
didn't control
42 went for ball with defender - both missed
46 strong header from 5 yards out straight at keeper. Unlucky - did
everything right powerful and down as you are meant to do

I was surprised he had only about 25 touches in the entire first half (Diouf
seemed to have that every 5 mins). Maybe he wasn't doing enough off the
ball? He seemed to come deeper at the end of the half and was involved more.
If the ball bounced differently in minute 13 it could have easily got to
someone who could have slotted it home (cf. making the goal on Saturday) and
then he could have scored in injury time.
Nothing spectacular but I don't think anything worthy of the donkey
criticism either.

So there is another little bit of data to 'hone in' or 'home in' to (maybe a
grammatical debate is more interesting than Becchio)

Re: [LU] happy days

2012-09-25 Thread Jeremy Adams

Diouf was immense tonight, as was Austin. Was it Rich who called White the next
Ryan Giggs? Completely agree. Byram has a really bright future, a few schoolboy
errors but a really exciting prospect. God I'm happy tonight, that's what
football's all about and I loved Warnock's comments after the game. You could
tell he loved that game, a real cup tie with pouring rain, plenty of drama,
plenty of effort, a bit of argy bargy, and no shortage of skill.
I'm really hoping that win will gel the team, they seem to genuinely work hard
for each other and I think that's Warnock's strength, to create a team
mentality and if you don't work for the team you're out (Nunez, Rogers etc.) I
have to say that fringe players like Brown and Pugh put in a good shift second
half, full credit to them.
Best,
Jeremy

I was against Diouf coming, how wrong I was. I like his blowing kisses to the
Leeds fans at the corner right in front of Everton fans.

I agree with much of what Andy wrote here.

This was the first game I've been able to watch for a while, so I was actually
surprised at the quality of the football we played. From some of the reports
I'd gotten the impression we were a "hoof and hope" team but for long stretches
of this evening's game we played attractive pass-and-move football against a
very good Premier League side. I was particularly impressed with White, Byram,
Austin and Diouf. It's a real testament to Colin's man-management skills that
(so far) he's managed to coax such wonderful, committed performances from a
player he was on record as calling a "sewer rat" before persuading him to join
us.

Cheers!

Expected 0 -3 to be fair so well chuffed too, great first half, we bossed first
half and Everton were poor, lots of commitment all over the pitch even Becchio
ran around in first half but agreed his touch is very poor and he just doesn't
seem to have the skills we need to push for premiership, maybe coulda done
better with his header in first half but it was a good effort to be fair. Diouf
was class, still able to play at a higher level IMO, Austin I like, he is a
monster, Aidy White was on drugs first half after his great goal, he ran
everywhere.

We seemed composed for some of it but not so much later on, had an Everton mate
with me before second goal and said why are we putting in high crosses, those
defenders are too big for us, free kick along ground goal, point proven.
Right result, great noise from crowd too, Gary Speed bit was sweet, I wonder if
the Everton fans joined in.. sounded like they did.

As long as we show that commitment in every game I think we will be alright but
have to admit we need a striker with pace, if Diouf gets injured or suspended I
would be very worried.

[LU] Gotta be chuffed with that

2012-09-25 Thread Sutton / Smail
Hell yeah! Stunned by tonight's performance. Everything we're usually "not"
we "were" tonight. Not a "hoof" in sight. Slick and fast passing to feet
with movement to die for, not to mention the general great fitness of the
squad. I thought Everton would do just enough to win this with the usual big
guns on the bench just incase. I was wrong!
Diouf and Austin in particular both class acts generating time together with
space. Carry on like this and we are Premiership parachute payment material.
Anyway, anyone up for a 1-1 against Bristol City at the weekend??

Hey ho!

Re: [LU] Yorkshire Tea

2012-09-25 Thread Jeremy Adams

Okay, I take it all back, we battled like feck in that second half and showed
some decent pieces of football and thoroughly deserved that win. Yes we were
under the cosh when they got their goal but up until that point they'd only had
one shot on goal. Hard to single out any player though Diouff is just great, as
is Austin. Byram looked good and Tonge seemed to be having a good partnership
with Diouff. Sorry, Becchio is rubbish, he'd be a decent centre back but he's
not an outlet upfront. When we needed to hold the ball up it went to Diouff who
did it perfectly, every time. Brown is slow but he worked hard this game,
didn't really seem to notice Pugh but top marks to the back four who really put
their bodies on the line. Yes they should have had a penalty when Pearce was
all over one of theirs but that doesn't take away from the fact that we
deserved this, besides we had a decent pen no shout when Diouff was fouled but
the ref gave it the other way.
Thought some subs could have been used a little earlier, Poleon on for Becchio
for example when the game was stretched and they were pushing for a goal a bit
of pace up front would have been nice.

I think we've worked very hard but don't look all that skillful. We deserve our
lead through effort and we seem to want it more but I just get the feeling
we're going to see a different second half. I'm just happy with the effort,
can't ask more than that.
Hope Peltier is okay, can't be doing with another injury.

[LU] Half time

2012-09-25 Thread Jeremy Adams

Well we're certainly not short of effort though not a lot of quality on display
though to be fair the pitch looks pretty wet. Diouf is our best player by a
country mile, everything seems to be going down our right, Byram is doing well
though a few passes into touch were baffling. Tonge doesn't seem to be doing a
lot, Austin doing everything in midfield, back four have defended well but you
get the feeling that everton are going to step it up second half and this is
about as good as we can play. We were under pressure for a bit but they've not
really had a decent chance and we came back a bit towards the end of the half
and then Becchio had a decent header which was saved and hoofed away. What's
apparent with Diouf is he can trap the ball, with Becchio it bounces three
yards off him. A couple of times we'd have had another goal if we had a striker
with pace, their back 4 don't look quick at all.
Hats off to White, a well taken goal, best piece of skill of the half.
Lets see what happens second half

Re: [LU] Rich and Becchio

2012-09-25 Thread Damian Walsh
Surely Rich you are always moaning about his flick-ons to noone? ;)

BTW I agree entirely with where you are coming from about "mid table"
mediocrity but I don't think that Becchio out of all our players deserves
to be singled out for that

Re: [LU] The never-ending Becchio debate

2012-09-25 Thread Richard Walker
Yes a goal is a goal no matter how it is scored. Agreed.

I think defenders love playing against Becchio cos he is so flat footed and so
easy to dominate in the air. The only thing they need to worry about is his
cheating.

Then you go on to the argument which riles me. If there was a row of
championship players with Bellamy at one end and Becchio would be
somewhere in the middle. Great ! So by that analysis you'd probably expect him
to be playing for a mid table team with no chance of promotion. Is that what we
are ? Maybe we are ? Is that what we want ? And that goes back to my point, we
ain't going nowhere with a middle of the road, pedestrian centre forward with
no pace /ability, who if was stood in a line of championship players would be
in the middle. I actually think we are in agreement.
