Re: [LU] Bournemouth

2013-10-01 Thread Robert Heath
Dave.

NEVER apologise for one of your match reports being too long!

Sorry about your pain though.

This sounds a lot more positive than the bloody jinxmeisters on the radio
made it sound, I must say.

I know I am a thousand miles away and hardly qualified to judge, but it did
seem to me that the game was crying out for a double sub at ht of Diouf for
the hapless Hunt, and Byram for Peltier. If the FBs were getting all that
space, surely Byram would have been a more creative option than Peltier?

I'm starting to worry about Mcdermott.

As I predictedget ready for the NME on sat. Last night, the
Brolly Wally went into the dressing room at ht for his first
teamtalk.result: The Prams came back from 1-4 to grab a draw. I
seem to remember Warnock doing the same thing just after he was appointed,
although we came back from 0-1 to win 2-1 I think.

P.S. Anybody know why Cairns has replaced Ashdown on the bench for the last
few games?

[LU] Bournemouth

2013-10-01 Thread nat...@sky.com
Well we had enough chances to win three games tonight and should all be back
home celebrating a 4 or 5 goal victory - instead we spent the last few minutes
of the game hanging on, groaned when the ref added 5 minutes (and panicked a
bit) and then heaved a huge sigh of relief at the final whistle.
So what went wrong ? Well nothing really in some ways , every player bar maybe
Hunt had a good game and we scored 2 good goals but we just cannot find the net
often enough. Would Becchio have made a difference - who knows

McDermott had the bravery to drop both his 'big money signings' Murphy and
Wootton and to keep faith with Mowatt and recall Green and allow McCormack to
play up front with the recalled Hunt , and it largely worked. I was very
impressed with Mowatt on my first proper look at him and the energy he, Austin
and Green supplied in midfield allowed Tonge to stroll around and largely
control the game.
We looked decent from the start and missed two sitters as the ball fell to
McCormack in the 6yd box but his poor attempt was straight at the keeper and
the rebound fell kindly to Austin who must surely score - but no, his even
worse attempt was shot straight at McCormack who was now yards offside. Hunt
also had a header wide as we started brightly enough. Then on 30mins Hunt was
put clean through and rounded the keeper and was brought down - nailed on
penalty and since the ref (unlike myself) thought that Hunt would have scored a
red card too. Bournemouth avoided a double punishment when Ross's shot low and
in the corner but a bit soft was well saved. We continued to press and had a
two minute spell of pinball in their six yard box and area which actually
brought smiles to our faces so ridiculous was it that the ball never ended in
their net. At the other end Bournemouth offered next to nothing and so we all
thought it was just a question of time and
that a 3 goal win was imminent. Second half we did most things right - Warnock
(my man of the match) rampaged forward down the left wing and Peltier got
forward on the other flank as we did what teams are supposed to do against
10men - spray it around, keep the ball and get some width. Despite that we just
could not get either the final ball or the final attempt on goal correct. Rudy
even had a long range shot on target but it was a weak one not his usual
thunderbolt. Then the breakthrough - a cross by Warnock was swept it at close
range by Ross. This is it now we thought, floodgates open. Instead we continued
to miss chances or make the most of opportunities. Despite them being mostly
toothless and content to sit back we suddenly stopped playing and there was a
feeling of inevitability when they scored. Rudy made a really stupid tackle on
the half way line when their player was going nowhere and Rudy just ploughed
into the back of him , a daft
challenge and a stupid booking. We just stood around as the player got
treatment and were half asleep as Ian Harte (who else) hit the free kick into
the box and they won 2 headers and then it fell to a another one of theirs who
poked it home. Similar to QPR, Sheff Wed and Reading goals this season(If I
remember them correctly)
Whilst this was going on we took off Hunt - I am not at all convinced by him -
and brought on Poleon and the game continued in much the same fashion. Then we
had a corner and McDermott was about to bring on Smith and Diouff as a last
throw of the dice, they were not to be needed and both sat down again as the
ball came to Warnock whose cross was met by Pearce who headed it back across
the box and Poleon waited for it to bounce at the right height and volleyed it
in with great power - a really well taken goal.
This still did not kill off a by now stubborn Bournemouth and a Harte corner
right under the bar caused us problems and then Kenny was forced into making a
great diving 'photograph' save to his left.
I am not sure what Poleon has done wrong (his push at Watford perhaps?) but
referees do not seem to like him.He gets no decisions his way as he is kicked
pulled and generally fouled. Last night he was running alongside their forward
, there was minimal contact and Poleon had been matching him stride for stride
and yet, to everyones surprise the ref gave a foul and even more bizzarely gave
him an undeserved yellow !

So a welcome return to winning ways but no where near as convincing as it
should have been. Warnock man of the match, followed by Mowatt and Tonge,
Mowatt does look to have it all. Lees and Pearce did well apart from the goal
(that is our other major flaw, apart from goal scoring) that one lapse of
concentration that costs us.  Ross missed a few including the pen but did score
again when played as a striker (a lesson there)

One final point, at a time when we are complaining about chants against us (and
I know a few of you disagree with me on that one) we totally blow it by
starting (adopting it from City rather than making

Agreed spot on, becchio wasn't the reason we have been shit for 10 years and
there is no overnight fix from a man that sold everything and invested nothing
and a manager who called Thorpe arch a cancer

Problem is becchio was sold for something like £2m worth of new striker who is
busy scoring for some other team so we gave away his goals for nothing

Think you will be ok a you haven't started a massive personal attack on anyone!!

I have been thinking about this. How can we possibly fail with a bid for
Becchio on loan? He is rotting in the reserves pretty much any offer will do I
would have thought unless it was deliberately low.

50% of fans loved Becchio, we aren't scoring gfh feel good factor is wilting,
haigh likes the supportive tweets,

How about a bid doomed to failure to keep a lot of fans happy that we trying to
address problem with a hero returning.

Upside is if we got him he is an option and murphy can be given time to grow
into team without being this year's hate figure.

Dave,

I agree too about the Gary Speed issue - I think at the time of his death
to mark it how we did was fine, but now - let it go.

Don't agree with you though about the Turkey/Millwall stuff. There may be
occasional times when the Munich song is sung - probably away from the
grounds and not by big numbers these days. In fact the last two times we
played scum I never heard it once. I've been to Millwall for the last two
or three years and they sing about Turkey in vast numbers. A couple of
years ago I tried to photograph a bloke with his (8ish year old son) by his
side both waving printed Turkey flags and doing throat-cutting gestures
(they were not alone, the majority of the stand were doing it) I was just
gob-smacked that he would encourage his young son to do it. (photo was too
blurred!)

I'm with you on the Speed issue. When he wanted out we had to sell him because
his performances were pathetic. Bottling out of tackles and generally not
putting in the effort. Before he died he never got a good reception when he
came back to ER.

Not so sure on the Galatasaray thing. Certainly there is an issue about people
in glass houses. However, thankfully they are a minority for stuff like Munich.
I don't think the Dave Jones stuff is the same. Just my view. When you get
large numbers like Millwall filth singing and wearing Turkish shirts etc for
the sake of the families of the 2 lads I think LUST has done the right thing.

Re: [LU] Luciano!

2013-10-01 Thread nat...@sky.com
I was always fairly ambivalent towards Lucy - I never really understood the
hero status he got compared to the stick the miles better (in my opinion)
Beckford got in the same team.
He did have a decent scoring record albeit,as with many strikers, it was
inflated by a number of penalties in his last season (I know they still need
scoring but it does over-exaggerate his goals per games ratio in a way) and to
get into our top ten of all time is no mean feat.

Having said all that I do tend to go with the adage 'never go back' - I know
both Baird and to an extent Batty both came back and did well enough but they
are the exception.
Other than a morale boost amongst his many fans (and the opposite amongst his
fewer but not insubstantial number of detractors) I do not see what he will
bring to the team that we cannot get from other players out there who do not
have his 'baggage' / history etc

I think tonight is a massive game, lose or draw and the season is as good as
over, win and we can all get a lift and begin to dream of getting near the play
offs again.

I think it is very important that we keep McDermott for the long term and a bad
result tonight would begin to put pressure on him (even this early) and lose
some of the goodwill that he has amongst fans.

I am surprised that fans on waccoe are saying that even season ticket holders
are giving tonight a miss due to recent results and performances. I cannot
believe that anyone would pay £400 or whatever for a full seasons football and
then pack it in after 4 home games - assuming that if today goes badly they
will not be coming again ?

Hopefully things will go right tonight and we will get a victory and maybe the
first one where we win by more than 2 goals for a couple of seasons !

I see that Ian Harte is back in their squad, surely we have the pace somewhere
in the team to take advantage of his lack of speed ?

Is that strictly true? Or is it a touch of selective memory?
Isn't it more the case that we never looked like getting near promotion to
the
Premier League with Becchio under Warnock and Bates?
As I recall we got close under Grayson until Bates sold the midfield from
under him.
However, before Rich W has an eppy, you could say that with the service
from that midfield anyone could score goals.
Let's be fair, the Howson, Snodgrass, Clayton, Gradel midfield would not be
out of place in most lower premiership sides.
The fact that BMc can't rebuild that quality of line up over the summer
isn't exactly surprising.
We've been allowed to degrade into a lower championship squad and it's a
long way back.
Not sure quick loan fixes like Becchio or Beckford are the answer either.

Having him back suggests to me that BMcD is happy with mid table

foreseeable, especially if Becchio returns to get some tap ins to paper

c'mon Rob, surely you can't blame our win/loss just on Becchio? He did what
he was paid to do - score goals - at our level lge 1 & championship - I
think that is what you should expect from a player. He mispassed, fell over,
moaned, but he rarely missed when given an opportunity. He scored those
goals under several different managers under different playing formations
with different partners. I remember that lazy fat tax avoiding bastard
yeboah, but fuck did he score some belters and I'd give your right hand to
have him back (in his 90's guise obviously)

This is the 21st Century. The modern striker (alright not that modern, it's
been like this since at least the days of Allan Clarke) must do so much more
than score goals. Becchio has one huge and pivotal
weaknessdreadful ball control. This means that 95% of the time
when the ball is played up to him, we lose possession. No decent team can
play with a striker who cannot hold the ball up.

He may have scored a lot of goals (some of which were surprisingly
brilliant) during his years at Elland Road, but what was our win-loss record
over that time? Not great.

no point in attempting logic in this case, I long ago realised for some it's
a visceral hate for the guy, based on personal opinions, nothing wrong with
that, but nothing will change their view, f'rinstance him getting in our top
10 all time scorers was met with derision. It's just possible he wasn't the
cause of our playing methods under Warnock and might just be able to adapt
to our "new" tippytappy method. I think it is highly likely that he will
come back on loan, so we'll find out pretty soon. Hopefully the already
overstretched Leeds NHS will be able to handle the increase in aneurisms.

Just strikes me as a bit of desperation. Maybe a PR stunt to keep the fans
onside for a bit longer. We're looking at bringing in an Arsenal player and
your old favourite Becchio.

BMD 'I asked about Becchio and he isn't available'

Why bother telling us then we don't care. Is this his strategy ? did he
consider this when he let Morrison go ? Pathetic ! Worrying times ahead I
think.

Even if they are tap ins, you need to be there to do it and he seems to be
there or there abouts some of the time.

I'd have him back if he can muster a few goals again. We don't have many
other options.
