Subject: [LU] LU: Dave McAdam's Funeral

I went to Dave’s funeral yesterday in Burton on Trent, another pal gone.
As you get old, you seem to hear of friends deaths every two minutes.
The crematorium chapel was quite large and every row of pews were
occupied. We had, about a forty minute hold up on the A1, due to an
accident and just got there on time for the start of the service, which was
very nice. Afterwards everyone went to the Pirrelli Stadium, home of
Burton Albion it’s a small but superb stadium, everything seemed brand
spanking new. The area where the refreshments and drinks were consumed
had lots of tables and I assume this was the main restaurant for the stadium.
This overlooked the playing area and the pitch looks magnificent with sprinklers
watering the, lovely green plush turf. As we entered the reception area there
were
posters telling us this was the venue for Dave’s good bye’s, wake or whatever
it’s
called. At the top of the stairs we went along a very long corridor and on the
right
hand side were all the doors to the executive boxes, for the match day patrons,
all numbered as I said earlier, every thing was pristine and very smart. The
people
were wonderful, Dave’s daughter Sue, had mentioned to other mourners we had
travelled from the North and she introduced me to Ben Robinson the Burton Albion
Chairman, who I have to say is a lovely bloke and very sincere and friendly. I
asked
Ben, if Leeds United had sent a representative, of course they hadn’t, which I
felt a
bit embarrassed about. If it had been one of Leeds superstars, I’m sure there
would
have been quite a few there, but journeyman footballers such as Dave get no
respect
or recognition shown to them in my opinion and I think that’s a shameAt
least
I was there to represent the Leeds fans and list, and felt honoured to be
there. On my
blazer lapel I had the old Blue & old gold LU Supporters club badge from the
50’s and
60’s. The buffet was all laid out in one of the executive boxes and then
carried through
to the main dining area where there was tea and coffer urns and the bar. As we
left
there was a football match in progress on the practice pitch between Burton
Albion
ladies and Birmingham ladies. All in all, obviously, a very sad occasion but
Dave’s
life was celebrated and at the the age of ninety four he certainly had been
fortunate
enough to have a long and happy life. He was a great person to know, generous
and
a true gentleman. RIP Dave McAdam, you will be missed, greatly, by many people.

Re: [LU] Thomas Christiansen - no me neither

2017-06-15 Thread Phill Shields
This appointment lacks ambition in my opinion and feels like a financial one as
opposed to football. If this had been announced in the period when season
tickets were up for renewal it would have certainly had a negative impact.

Apparently AR was very impressed with TC at the interview, my question is how
did he even get an interview?

When looking for the qualities to manage us I would have expected the
successful candidate to meet most of the following criteria:-

  * Track record of management in English football and preferably the
Championship;
  *   Ability to attract better players than we have now;
  *   Some sort of silverware in management;
  * Able to build on what we already have.

He patently fails against 3 of that criteria. Seriously, I don’t care how good
he was at interview, if this is the best AR can do he should have fought tough
and nail to keep Monk.

You will have gathered that I am thoroughly pissed off. This is a massive
gamble and, as usual, it is us the fans whose hopes and aspirations are being
toyed with again.

It feels to me like we are doing it on the cheap yet again. Can’t wait to see
our squad been improved by all these superstars from Cyprus football.

Got a better track record than monk

No idea what he is like but didn't fancy any of the others we were linked with

Re: [LU] Forest Green - 2 1 up at half time

2018-07-17 Thread Phill Shields
I thought the main difference is what we did when we didnt have the ball. We
pressed all over the pitch and showed real determination to get it back when we
lost the ball. Young lad should have saved their goal, it was nowhere near the
worldy that the useless commentator made it out to be. He did make up for it
though.

Still think we need centre half (2), winger and a target man up front.

This was good for our 1st run out of the season.

You know when Bielsa took the job and said that he'd watched every single
Leeds game from last season? Appears that's just the tip of his
preparation-iceberg: "Forest Green are well into their friendly schedule
and spent some time in Devon last week. Bielsa had all of their friendlies
filmed in preparation for tonight."

McCormack put in a transfer request. None of us wanted him to go but he got
more than double what he is worth.

When has Cellini fleeced the fans? He was very popular with Calgary fans which
is pretty unique in that country.

We all have reservations about Hockaday but he does have PL experience as a

We know what we are getting with Cellino - a crook who has a track record of

Cellino ran a small club with average gates of 5k for 22 years and 17 of them

McCormack looked for any excuse to jump ship and if he hadn't I would still

The Cagliari fans didn't love Cellino - they are very regional people

Re: [LU] lost 2 - 0 at Mansfield

2014-07-24 Thread Phill Shields
CM is Massimo Cellino (MC) (whoops).

If there was somebody better then Hockaday in the frame would you care to share
their names? Of course Hockaday has other experience in the PL but it doesnt
suit your purposes to focus on that.

FFS I have no reason to defend Hockaday, I am saying lets give it a go. We both
know if we start poorly he will be gone and then we will see all these top
coaches you are banging on about lining up to do the job. I personally suspect
at some point that Carbone will end up with the job.

I don't need reminding about the stature of this club. It breaks my heart what
we have turned into but I think MC offers a new dawn. There have been so many
false ones so lets give him a chance.

I'll watch them whatever because that is what I do. If you are so pessimistic
vote with your feet lad.

Are you saying that Hockaday is the best we can get? Who is CM?
Cellino admitted that he 'didn't know' why he had employed Hockaday.
Irony is not lost on me - you seem to be suggesting that there is nobody better
than Hockaday available.
There clearly are. Just to remind you, in case you forgot, Hockaday was sacked
from his job as manager of non league forest green rovers following a run of 7
defeats in 8 games.
We are one of only 7 football league clubs to have been crowned champions of
England in the last 25 years.
You think that Hockaday is the best we can do? I feel sorry for you mate. Such
low standards and low expectations.

but he has only been here 5 minutes. If players continue to make mistakes then
the coach picking then carries the can.

Let's be honest though, neither of the 2 culprits will feature regularly in our
team next season.

Thanks for sharing this.

I haven't changed my stance which is to give the bloke a chance. This will not
of course be welcomed by some listers.

They need to get a reality of where we are as a club. I suspect their apparent
hatred of Hock is because of the piss taking by non Leeds fans. Like when have
we ever give a fuck about what anyone else thinks.

If he fails everyone will shrug their shoulders and forget him instantly. If he
succeeds the guy will be a legend.

The real point here is that he is Cellini's man so he is my man. Getting rid of
Kenny, Pugh and Lees all thumbs up from me.

I reserve the right to drop either/both if this all goes wrong but I really
hope it doesn't.

Are you being serious?

No pace, doesn't concentrate, can't boss a forward and (wrongly) thinks he can
pass which is dangerous.

Cost us more goals individually than any other player last year and cannot hold
a candle to Pearce

This is seriously good business for Leeds. The kid simply has not got it and
never will have it in my view.

Even having said that, he still seems infinitely better than Wootten and on

occasions been able to get back quickly to cover the mistakes of others (and
sometimes his own) with last ditch tackles or blocks. .

Not the perfect answer to our needs but, then neither is anyone on the current
squad; however, on skill alone I'd keep him ahead of Wootten and probably ahead
of Pearce but, when you factor in little or no fee then, it seems a really bad
move.

Re: [LU] Dundee U

Good report Dave and completely agree with your assessment. Only negative Noel
Hunt, useless.

On 2 Aug 2014 21:08, "nat...@sky.com" wrote:
This was a pre season game against Sottish opposition ( not sure what the
equiavalent standard is) so everything has to be read with that in mind

The result was mainly immaterial but we won 2 0 - so goals for Morison and
Poleon and a clean sheet - something that would be very satisfying in a 'real
game' watched by a crowd of just over 10k

I was impressed for the most part, we could have scored more and we restricted
them to a couple of shots that were going wide. We passed the ball well and
kept possession. It was a different method of playing from that seen at ER in
recent years, as we sat back when they had the ball and waited for them to make
a mistake or took it off them whenever they threatened.

Our starting line up, based on squad numbers was not far off the likely
starting eleven next week (subject to new arrivals) with the injured White,
Hunt and Smith the only ones numbered 1 to 11 who did not start. I have
listened via LUTV to all the pre-season games but this was my first 'visual' of
the teams, goals ' highlights excepted.

We could not have got off to a better start as a 4 or 5 man passing move ended
with a pinpoint cross into the box to the unmarked Morison who tapped it into
an empty net - a well worked goal and Morison got himself into the perfect
position, but he will not score an easier one all season.

We seemed to have a plan and a style and we executed it pretty well - we passed
the ball and kept it away from them. Pearce had a couple of headers that went
close, Tonge had a decent long range shot and Austin an awful one. Bianchi also
had a decent attempt

The game seemed to be being played at three quarter pace but we looked pretty
good. Silvestri in net only had two things to do, he got down well and turned a
shot round (but it was a dead ball since it was going wide) and he came out and
collected a cross - that was his involvement for the day as we restricted them
to their own half.

Bianchi looks a player, he always had time and space on the ball - the mark of
a good player - and picked out a Leeds player with the vast majority of his
passes, very early days but I like him

Doukara - listening on the radio I did not expect much from him but on todays
showing he will be a real handful, big, strong, quite quick and showed a couple
of great bits of skill - one especially when he had his back to the defenders
but chipped it over his own head and turned and beat 2 of them. An early goal
to settle his nerves / build his confidence and he could be a real hero of the
terraces - early doors fans were calling him Kandol and Enoch but by the end we
were hoping he is Jimmy / Beckford.

Berardi came on at half time and was mixed bag - made a couple of errors but
won the ball back both times

Morison worked hard ('put a shift in' lol) and gave cover for the defence as
well as creating stuff up front

For the last 20mins or so we had a very young team out with Taylor, Cook,
Poleon and Dawson all joining the fray. Dawson is tiny but he got stuck in and
does have skill etc, Cook tried too hard and like Berardi messed up a couple of
times but then won the ball back.

Poleon looked lively - he can still make it- and got his reward in the last few
minutes when Smith and the defender collided and the ball come to Poleon who
took it round the keeper and walked it into the net.

So overall, I left the game a lot happier and more confident than when I walked
into the ground- pre season, what looked like poor opposition but we showed
flashes of excellent football and seem to have a plan- impressed with Doukara ,
although he may be hit and miss over the course of the season, and very
impressed with Bianchi - a real footballer on todays showing

Much too early to get excited BUT with Byram looking sharp we could surprise a
few this season and may give the fans something to cheer about

Forget hoofball and welcome to the Hock (ok this is tongue in cheek)

[LU] LU: McCormack

2014-08-10 Thread Phill Shields
https://www.clubcall.com/championship/magath-slams-leeds-1735777.html

This is hilarious and reflects so badly on Fulham and the player. So what do
their medical team actually check when they carry out a "fitness" test on a
prospective signing? It can't be just dodgy knees or ankles?? They still
decided he was worth shelling out £11m - very professional!

As regards McCormack, given that he refused to take part in our preseason and
that he was off he is responsible for his own fitness.

Having said all that, he clearly has a weight problem which was never addressed
at Leeds. He should have score more goals last season if he had been able to
work the line better with Smith.

My only comment about yesterday is that if Hockaday wants to win the fans over
he needs to show much more courage in his team andselection. As soon as I saw
the squad/formation I expected the worse. The only way to blood these new
players is to play them. As for playing Hunt before Smith, I thought we had got
rid of McDermott - looked like he picked team yesterday.

I don't think he is pacey, I don't think he's that strong either , he appears

Re: [LU] Team Selection

2014-08-28 Thread Phill Shields
Good article. I don't think it is fair on Smith to play him up front when we
are adhering to this useless diamond formation. We are too narrow and the only
balls he receives are with his back to play from long & deep which always
favour the centre halves.

He should definitely have given new players a run last night. We are not going
to win the cup and it would have gotten them used to a hostile English away
game.

I have no axe to grind about Hockaday but he really needs to start showing some
bravery in his decision making. We all know Bolton is a must win game and if we
lose he will be gone.

You cannot question the commitment last night but the writing was on the wall
after Murphy walked. This lad simply has not got it. He does not have the
mental strength to wear the shirt, makes poor decisions, hides and cannot step
up when we need it.

Sounds like another 3, mainly midfielders wingers, will be signed before
deadline. Let them play FFS.

Very lucky to stay on the pitch.

Thanks Dave, pretty much how it sounded on the radio.

Apparently Redders didn't travel with team which is worrying.

Doukara was god awful. Who knows how he didn't get subbed.

In general far too passive, playing our football far too deep in ineffective
positions in our own half, such that when it broke down we put ourselves under
pressure. Balls forward were long and straight and easy to defend.

Didn't close them down. The very few occasions we did Brentford looked
flustered.

Substitutions were poor, unimaginative and didn't do anything to change the
game.

Those are the plus points.

Very disappointing result. Darko obviously bored the poor fuckers into a dismal
performance.

I am assuming this is the occasional one step backwards that Reddrs warned us
about.

Still ruined my weekend . Will never get my head around that we've been
comprehensively beaten by fucking Brentford.

I'm going to the pub for some Leeds pale ale. Much of it.

Re: [LU] Reading

2014-10-02 Thread Phill Shields
Dave,

I thought we were very poor last night and if our new coach is looking to make
his mark on our team I was not impressed by the tactics or team selection. No
purpose, no penetration and a safety first approach.

Several players had mares last night, how he let Sloth stay on the pitch is
beyond me and the lad Cook just couldn't do anything right. The harder he tried
the worse he got poor kid. He left him on far too long.

Playing Cooper instead of Warnock was a potty decision and I thought he looked
totally out of place and a real weak spot for us.

Redders rightly cold shouldered Murphy and yet Darko has included him the squad
twice and brought him on both games. He made no impact when he came on last
night and I cannot see how he is getting on a game in front of other new kids
ek Adryano. He needs teaching a lesson after what he did at Bradford.

I was thoroughly pissed off last night and his post match interview didn't
help. Yet again he went on about how good our opponents were, they are as good
as your team let them be Darko.

They totally bossed the 2ns half and, no Darko, they weren't playing for a
draw. One manager was making changes to try and get a win last night and it
wasn't you mate.

I fear the worst for Saturday.

[LU] Advice please - Betting at Elland Road on Matchday

2014-10-31 Thread Phill Shields
Despite the crap odds I have been using Skybet for having a little tickle on
the game. Its good for scorecasts and half/full-time bets ie ones that are not
normally available using national bookies on line.

Anyway, long story short I am done with Skybet. Mentioned the crap odds, had
problems with getting my winnings back last season and now they are refusing to
pay on a few quid I won on Wolves game which means I will now have to line up
with rest of winners at NE corner after Charlton game. So that is it finish.

I want to use an online betting service which I can place my bets whilst at ER
so I know the lineup where I can do scorecasts, both teams scoring etc but
really looking from advice from fellow listers who bet online please.

I only have Galaxy S4 so I want a site I can navigate easily and quickly.

Re: [LU] Walker's most derided match report XI

2015-01-09 Thread Phill Shields
At the risk at starting a long and boring exchange about the attributes (or
lack of them) of Becchio I would suggest that anyone who thinks he is the worst
player to wear the Leeds shirt simply hasnt watched Leeds enough.

In the forward department you have Frank Strandli & Micheal Ricketts before you
start. I would personally add Brian Deane who was useless but that may perhaps
be a bit more controversial.

Re: [LU] Redfearn

2015-04-13 Thread Phill Shields
I genuinely feel for Redders but I have to say that the players at the club
must realise that their performances/results in the run in to the end of the
season are vitally important for his future at the club. The last few games
have been very poor - its as if they don't care about the bloke.

Then again, I agree he must share part of the blame. Steve Thompson has gone
now, we need to move on. Cardiff are one of the poorest teams we have played at
our place this season and they won at a canter on Saturday. Cannot believe we
played 1 up front against them, they were there for the taking.

I personally do not want to see Morison in a Leeds shirt again, if we need
someone to stand wide on the right to use as an outlet use young Dawson or
possible Montenegro.

There are plenty of players in the squad who should be given a chance in the
run in, Del Fabrio, Sloth, Montenegro to name but a few.

Final point, it looks like Cellino is gearing up to off load us. A few week ago
I was optimistic about next season, I am really not hopeful now though.

Before you know who starts Viduka was a quality player. Celtic fans were

His 4 against the bin dippers was one of best performances by any player in the

Wood looks shite, and as for Erwin being one for the future I think we'll put
him in the Derek Lilley camp.

Byram has pledged his future to Leeds and he confirmed that when I saw him in

Drury is described as a 'pacey and intelligent dribbler'

Not sure who wrote it but sounds the sort of player we need now we have a
decent (hopefully) target man to aim at - not good enough for Man City but
could be decent at our level.. We really need a decent wide man who can take
players on and cross a ball.

Tom Lees "wasnt perfect"? Come on mate he was shocking for us!
Nothing against the lad, and pleased he is doing well elsewhere, but he was
very poor for us. I agree we also need a central half because Cooper & Wootton
are not the answer. Disappointed we let Del Fabrio go because he never got a
kick.
Still think we need an older head in midfield and a pacey winger although Ajosi
should be given a chance.

My mate is a season ticket holder at Brentford and he is gutted. I seem to
recall their winger having a good game at our place but I thought he was a
little kid. Dallas is a big lad, may have wrong player.
Completely agree with comments about our strategy this year, replacing ageing
players with young quality players and fair play to Cellino for backing the
manager.

Re: [LU] FFS

2015-09-23 Thread Phill Shields
I don't believe for one minute that Leeds were trying to get Byram to sign a
new contract offering less money than he is on at the moment. Sounds like his
agent is at work here.
It's been pretty clear for some time that he has no desire to remain at the
club and wants a big money move. I'd let him go to the highest bidder, I don't
think signing Buckley is a coincidence - Byram has been wank this season albeit
being played out of position.

Re: [LU] FFS

2015-09-23 Thread Phill Shields
I am not deluded enough to think that for a young player like Byram he has
ambitions that rest beyond my club and I have to reluctantly accept that. I
still think Byram is playing a the system and his agent is at it in the
background.
Cellino is maintaining that he will not sell him in January because we don't
need to which presumably means he will walk away for nothing at the end of the
season. Why he would carry out contract negotiations aimed at making him want
to go for nothing? It makes no sense and whatever any of you think about
Cellino has proven he can run a football club when it comes to finances.
At the end of the day Byram is on a wage and an employee of the club. As such
he should play when and where instructed and to a reasonable standard. He won't
be the first player to not put in a shift to force a move and he won't be the
last.
I'm for getting rid for as much as we can to the club that best suits us.

Personally think he's a fool for joining West Ham over Everton, shows a lack of
ambition to me. I know it's all about 1st team football but if he thinks he's
not good enough to fight for a 1st place spot at Everton then he shouldn't be
moving to the premier league. Also think Martinez's style of play would have
suited him better and that West Ham's position in the league won't last forever.

Funny how West Ham fan site is claiming that Sam is from a 'Hammers family'
Byram was born in Essex and is understood to come from a Hammers-supporting
family which – after we had offered the same personal terms as Everton – made
his decision to join the club pretty simple.

Re: [LU] Shez

2016-05-11 Thread Phill Shields
He was a good player but crap attitude.
I still recall Sheridan throwing his shirt at Wilko when he subbed him when we
were in the old 2nd division and that was basically, and rightly, the end for
him. He showed what respect he had for the manager, the shirt, club and fans in
my view and should not be allowed anywhere near ER.
I had a mate who played for the reserves around the time this tosser played for
us and the story he tells about him (he is a piss head) are unbelievable.
Reminder he never kicked a ball for Forest and 1st time Cloughie saw him was
when he was drinking late at the ground and player poker with the apprentices.
yes he is a real role model.
He also used to drink in the area where I live and again the same old story.
If you compare his management record with Steve Evans there is absolutely no
comparison. I am not biggest fan of Evans but he has delivered what was asked
and in terms of common decency should be given at least another year. We should
only let him go if we can get in someone better with a proven track record at
this level (eg Nigel Pearson), it would be a step down appointing Sheridan and
might just make me decide not to renew this season.

Rich,
don't agree about Lees mate, he was a car crash at Leeds and reminder he has
not been a regular for Wednesday lately. When I have watched him he still does
not boss his opponent and ball watches.
As for Forestieri, to be fair to MC (I know its hard) he bid for him and it
appears that Watford accepted it but the player was using us to get the best
deal he could. The player has said himself he didnt choose Wednesday over us
because when he realised he was going our bid had been withdrawn. Good
Championship player but Watford soon got rid of him when prompted and based on
all 90 minutes last night I think it was a sound decision.
If Wednesday go up they basically need 11 new players in my view.

Rich,
I live in the Barnsley/Sheffield border so I get plenty of feedback from the
pigs on Lees but they rub it in cos they got him for nowt.
I know he played a lot up until recently but I thought he had been bombed out
of their team after being found out. To be fair he played in a poor defence at
Leeds and I actually do not dislike the kid. I think that Lovrens at Wednesday
is a decent centre half and maybe playing with him has improved his game. He
still lacks presence to me though when I have seen him but as you will have
gathered I didnt rate him at our place.
I didn't watch Friday's game mate. Last night I saw him put in a brilliant ball
for the Hooper header and he did zip for the rest of the game. I do agree he is
top dollar for this league though.

Re: [LU] Evans?

2016-05-20 Thread Phill Shields
I wouldnt compare what Howe has done with Leicester mate. Generally speaking
the clubs with most money usually win their league's and thanks to the Russian
oligarch backing Bournemouth that is why they won the Championship. Don't get
me wrong the lad is clearly good at his job but it helps he had the biggest
budget in the league.
I am surprised (maybe not) that the football authorities have not scrutinised
the club's accounts for financial fair play because for such a small ground
they could not sustain their investment based on attendances.
I recall when they bought Callum Wilson they outbid clubs in the Premiership.

I'm not bitter or anything...

Have been worried about this. If Ross McCormack is now worth £11.5m (he wasn't
before) how can we hope to compete.

Now teams coming down always struggle at first but last year was the first time
2 just bounced back with no problem. QPR were always going to struggle. Boro
spent loads so did Derby.

You can see the same this year with Norwich and Newcastle. Villa might be ok
due to decent manager and new owners

Can't see with the change in money how we can break the top 10 without £10-20m
being spent

He's clearly identified problems with the team - shit goalkeeper, clown car
defenders, lack of class in the middle other than Cook, lack of centre forwards
- and made steps to address them. We had 17 draws last season. If Green and
Bartley can turn four of those into wins by being solid at the back, and
Antonsson, Sakho and a fit Wood can turn another four into wins by actually
scoring goals, then that would have been enough to get us into the playoffs.
I have not checked his stats but, assuming they are true, it does give a little
bit of hope - turning 8 of 17 draws into wins should not be that hard with a
few better players than we had. That does of course depend on the new signings
being better than the old ones

not sure where you animosity comes from, did he nick a parking space from
you? He's played in the premier and got promotion from Championship. OK,
so he fcuked up once for England, but who hasn't? I think all round he'll
give us a more commanding presence in the box than Marco.

A few things to add to this..

Murphy - He really was that bad. I lost count of the number of times he passed
it 2 yards behind Purver, causing him to check back and lose any pace advantage
we had going forwards. So often in the first half he didn't pick his head up
and spot Roofe or Taylor as the obvious outball, he just passed it back to
Bamba or Bartley, the ball went back to Green and hoof. There is absolutley no
point spending any money on attacking pace and ability with him in the team as
he negates it all. I hope Monk has sussed him.

Purver - Very small, average pace and looked lacking in any confidence to go
beyond the half way line, or even be on the ball. Clearly not anywhere near
ready for the first team. It makes sense that Monk seems to be in the market
for another RB with Berardi an unknown in terms of his injury, leaving only
Coyle.

Taylor - Really didn't look bothered. Rarely overlapped until the last 15 or so
when playing behind Sacko. There was a drinks break after half an hour where
the whole team headed over to the bench to get instructions. Taylor however got
thrown a bottle by the linesman on the opposite side of the pitch and stayed
there on his todd until play resumed. It just didn't look right to me.

Roofe - Good signing.

Antonsson - He's not a target man and with Monk playing a clear 4-2-3-1
formation spent a lot of time going for headers he had no hope of getting. He's
far more mobile than Wood though, and never stopped running, so maybe there's a
partnership there..

Mowatt - Was bang average and certainly not a number 10 which is where he
played.

Glue factory for Murphy,

Ben

from the Friday night team could make a big difference (as could the addition

maybe Cooper in place of Bamba and things do look a bit better Pre season games
are always hard to call and some of the comments on waccoe are laughable - with
some on there a win and we are best ever , a defeat and none of them are good

We just have to have faith in Monk and hope he knows what he is doing - he is

the middle up front (on his own in a midfield 5 or middle of a 3)Roofe will be

I think Taylor is better than Byram. He is a better defender by far and not
much difference in attacking in my view.

I am gutted that Taylor is leaving and it is basically because he sees nothing
worth keeping him here. As he has put in a transfer request the club will be
able to cash in on him but, again, this must be reinvested in the playing
staff. If we are to compete for promotion we still need quality centre half,
left back, goalie, holding midfielder player and a proven goal scorer at this
level.

As things stand the best we can hope for is top half finish because we will not

a great first season his form dipped badly and then was played out of position)
With Taylor and Berardi I really think we had an excellenct full back pairing
that would have done very well in this division.
I can understand why he is going - we cannot offer Prem football and the wages
that go with it, and like the others who made the breakthrough he was not

Re: [LU] Fulham report

2016-08-17 Thread Phill Shields
Leeds were totally outplayed from the 1st to last minute last night and there
should be a criminal investigation into how we got a point.

My biggest concern was how Tom Cairney (ex Leeds of course) dominated the
midfield and Monk did nothing tactically to address it. Monk was outsmarted 2nd
half by Rowatt on Saturday and for all of last night's game. I will say that
Fulham are far and away the best team we have played and based on last night I
see them being in the promotion battle.

I have a bad feeling that Monk is doing another job like Gary McAllister tried
at Leeds. The midfield is so lightweight because he wants to play football but
we can never get the ball back when we lose it, which is often. You need to
have options, Bridcutt will obviously help here but we need much more than him
in the middle.

We need a goalie, left back, centre back and striker and not reservists from
european clubs who have never competed or proven themselves in the Championship.

Going to pig sty on Saturday and expecting the worst.

Absolute nonsense if there is any truth whatsoever in these storiesAt the very
least Monk must be given a full season (and ideally till Christmas next season
before even considering his position)He has brought in ten players now plus
Vieira from youth team (and Philips to a certain extent) so how can anyone even
think of sacking him ?
He needs time to get his ideas across and for them to gel - it is beyond
ridiculous to allow anyone to bring in lots of players and then not give them
time
I am pretty ambivalent towards Cellino and am not a member of the TTGM or IMWT

times BUT on the other side he does seem to care and has learnt from a lot of
his mistakes but if he does not give Monk the time he needs, whatever our

Taggart was also covered in the same documentary with allegations about monies
he apparently manipulated to his son who was an agent. If you recall he stopped
doing post match interviews on MOTD as a protest although for some reason he
never took them to court

I suspect it was stuff like this to prompted the decision by JP Magner to sell
scum to the Glaziers.

People employed in professional football live on a different planet which is
also typified by Taggart's actios around breeding rights for that nag Rock Of
Gibraltar which was probably the final nail in coffin for the paddy owners of
scum and the nag.

You miserable set of ..We won against a team that was full of
Premeirship players and cemented our place in the top 6Not the greatest game or
performance but 3 very valuable hard earned and deserved pointsWe needed to
bounce back after the Newcastle game and show that we can do it at home in
front of a big crowdYes the first half was an awful game of football with no
shots or chances to either team but we did what we had to do and the fans all
went home happy and with a belief that this team is going places.
In Janson and Ayling we have players who look like they WANT to be at Leeds -
something we have not seen since the likes of Hughes and Prutton played above
themselves by being LEEDS
Roofe got the goal his performances richly deserved and which he needed - let's
hope it is the first of many for us, the rest of them did what they had to do
in a hard fought contest. The crowd got behind them and urged them on - for the
first time since Grayson we all seemed to be together - I compared it to
Newcastle and Wolves in the 89 promotions season - poor close games that one
good move and goal settled in our favour (albeit we got a second right at the
end)
Player for player this is far from the best Leeds United team but they are a
TEAM and with this mentatlity we can go on and do things.
Not really enough action to do a real report and i expect most of you watched
it on TV but it does feel like the start of better things and whilst this is an
easy to forget game we came away with the points in an game of attrition where
defences were on topenjoy it and do not dwell on the details

I suggest that Monk either gives Silvestri a chance or brings in an extra

Dave,

I think we need to avoid defeat tomorrow, a draw would not be a disaster but we
must be looking to beat Brentford on Saturday.

I agree the top 2 are streets ahead for different reasons. If you had promised
me our current position back in August I would have snapped your hand off. We
are a project under development and just need to stay in the mix and see what
ambitions our current/future owners can show in January.

As I said, I like Monk but continuing to select a player who is consistently
poor sends the wrong message to the rest of the squad. Silvestri deserves a
chance based on what he has done when he stepped in for the cup games.

We have really missed that bit of class from Hernandez in my view, cant see
Bridcutt being ready for tomorrow and I would play Mowatt before Grimes any day
of the week. Fuck me, I might regret saying this, but I'd play Murphy before
Grimes.

I agree that Green has been a real disappointment and a weak link. I would give
Silvestri a chance, he had his faults but it will be a lot better for him with
Bartley and Janson in front of him rather than Bellusci and Bamba.
Moscowhite on twitter (one of the square ball writers) did a really good
explanation of the first penalty and Greens massive part in it , and has done
screen shots to explain how Green was at fault

Friday was a bad day at the office all round: for me Taylor came out with
credit as did Vierra but the rest all had a bad game and were second best.

We have the chance in the next 5 days to get things back on track starting with
Reading tomorrow- so far the top two teams (Newcastle and Brighton) have shown
why they are top two and beat us reasonably easily ( both with 'help' from
Green) so we need to show tomorrow that we are a genuine top 6 team and beat
them.
Follow that with a victory over Brentford on Saturday and things will look good
again
We need O'Kane and Bridcutt back as soon as possible and we need the crowd to
keep on believing (it will be interesting to see how many turn up tomorrow and
Saturday after the big crowds v Newcastle and Villa - have fans returned
because they believe or is it that they were lured in by the opposition ?)

Looking forward to finding out if we can do it and have some optimism that we
will indeed get 6 pts from the two games (I fancy Roofe to bag a goal in each
game)

If he was told to occupy the space between the back four and half way line,
keep taking the ball off the centre half's and pass it straight to the
opposition I agree he did OK.

I have seen nothing from him yet that makes me think he is a good signing.

I thought we smoked cigars last night and Stam is an idiot if he thinks a team

Some more thoughts:
Roofe - after a couple of decent games I thought he was poor last night. He
doesn't look to have the stature / presence or the legs to really threaten
defences.
Bartley - I thought he was ok but I think recently he's looked a bit more like
Sol Bamba than his earlier performances. Still solid though.
Doukara - I thought he really struggled in what was basically a midfield role.
When he went up front on his own he won more headers than Wood has won all
season but was pretty ineffective (apart from his excellent pen).
Mowatt - I hate slapping this guy down but I think last night really exposed
his limitations. He came on and was asked to chase up front and close down
Reading. He couldn't do it and within 10 minutes he was blowing out of his
arse. I felt really sorry for him as people around me really gave him dogs
abuse. I think you have to be realistic though and say he aint gonna make it in
a top championship team. For me he's a bit like Mcphail in that he's got a nice
left foot but to be effective he needs to be playing in a midfield full of
runners who can cover. Mcphail had Bowyer and co.
Green - made a couple of really good saves but he doesn't fill me with
confidence when he's flapping around his area. He did one bad kick which the
Kop got on to him for and he lifted his finger up to indicate it was his only
mistake. Fair play.

This was classic Ali v Foreman stuff. We absorbed all their pressure and they
had loads of it and then hit them on the counter. If this was Monk's strategy
from the off in a home game then I'd give him manager of the year now. I
suspect we came up against a better footballing side ( a much better) and had
to defend and chase like mad and feed off scraps on the break.

Our defence is very well organised now and with Vierra and Bridcutt sat in
front like2 little terriers , Reading had to be content to just pass it around
without making much progress. Our fans were actually holaying their passes such
their ineffectiveness.

I was however surprised to hear Adam Pope on RL on the drive home saying we had
taken apart with perfect performance - that is really stretching it and for
that to be true you have to believe in the Ali v Foreman strategy and I don't
think we would ever set out to defend at home like we did tonight.

Best players - Jansson - immense, his block on the line in the 94th minute and
his reaction to the South Stand was true hero stuff. He is the best defender we
have had since the Premier League. The Wham song however is a total
embarrassment.

Dallas - ok I'm still not sure what position he plays in but he looked sharp
and full of energy and helped us get them in the break.

Sacko - if he had a brain he'd be lethal but again he was crucial to us
breaking with pace. Scared them to death and make Wood's goal.

Vierra - love this kid, ran all day and still wanted more. He's our best
midfielder.

Bridcutt - looked a little leg heavy but he grew into the game and I like him
because he does all the simple stuff really well like break up play and get
moves going. Great little player.

Grimes - yes I said it against Brighton, I think he has more to offer and he
showed it when he came on last night. He's got a bit of grit about him and he's
got a nice left foot. I think he will challenge for that left midfield place.

Dear All,

Spoke to Thirkers yesterday and he asked me to share the following with
you all.

Another name from Leeds United gone to the great changing room in the sky.

Betty

RIP Dave McAdam (1923-2017)

Dave McAdam was a very unlucky young man whilst at Leeds United. He was
signed by Frank Major Buckley who was renowned as a very hard
task-master. Dave played twenty consecutive games for Leeds and showed
great promise during this period, playing in the half-back line
alongside, the Great John Charles and skipper Tommy Burden. In the last
of these twenty games Dave sustained a severe injury after a spell out
of the side on the injured list. he regained his positionand played just
four more games only to suffer the recurring knee injury. In the end the
manager told Dave if it didn’t clear up he would have to leave the club.
The injury didn’t clear and Dave was transferrred to Wrexham.

His record at Leeds states: Half-Back. Born Hereford, 3rd April 1923.
Debut v Tottenham Hotspur (a) Division Two, 13th September, 1948, Drew
2-2. He was 5’ 10” and weighed 10stone 4lbs (1949). McAdam was plucked
from none League football by Frank Major Buckley and enjoyed a brief
spell with Leeds United.

He attended Abingdon Council School, Berkshire and went into the Army in
1941, serving with the 1st Battalion Wiltshire Regiment, in India, Burma
and the North West Frontier. He played football at battalion level and
on demob in September 1946 worked at the Branston Ordnance Depot near
Burton upon Trent. He joined Stapenhill WMC and was spotted by Major
Buckley. Within months he was in the Leeds first team but due to injury
moved to Wrexham in May 1950. After a year there, he spent ten years at
Burton Albion before joining Matlock for four years, helping to run the
reserves before returning to Stapenhill.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Dave for a few years now and the
photographs on my web page
(http://www.thirkersleeds.co.uk/page9/page9.html and at
http://www.ozwhitelufc.net.au/players_profiles/M/McAdamDF.php) were
given to me by him. We have visited each other's homes and I must say
Dave was a really lovely bloke, his wife Lal and daughter Susan are just
as nice and are a super family. There are photographs below of one of
those meetings. At this particular get-together at Dave’s home, my wife
Jean and I took another great friend with us, Harold Williams who played
over 200 games for Leeds United and features in the photographs just
mentioned. More pictures at http://photobucket.com/davemcadam

Yeah Colin was clearly planning to dump him. That's why he offered him a new
contract and to make him our highest paid player.

All 3 managers picked him regularly. Your argument about his goal scoring is
because he has played so many games.

Re: [LU] LOTSA

2013-02-07 Thread Phill Shields
I was gutted we didn't get him. We are crying out for a winger and every time
he has played against us, Cardiff or Birmingham, he has played well.

If we had got him there would have been some hope of making the play offs. I am
happy with the Morrison deal but the signings of Warnock and Habibou will have
no impact at all.

The season is over for us now.

Matt Anderson wrote:

We were linked but so were others. Allegedly someone had a £600k bid

It's tough to judge on one performance but has he been that good for Brum?

On the note of ambition we need to give GFH a good chance as the transfer
window was a lot better than previous years, we got a free £2.9m striker
plus cash for an old carthorse.

I do remember (possibly from an Israeli direction but not 100% sure so
apologies if not) some stinging criticism when Forest were taken over by
that Kuwaiti nut job who has proved a roaring success so far! It should have
been us and so forth!

GFH really have. He could have been bought for a reasonable amount and
looks to be a proper winger.

[LU] Last Night

2013-02-21 Thread Phill Shields
Have to say I am surprised at some of the euphoria exhibited on the list about
last night. There were plenty of things that pleased me but I think we are so
used to dining on scraps that when a scabby chip is delivered we think its
scampi!

The real difference between the two teams was our defence who played excellent
and theirs who didn't. The two goals they gave us were shocking defending.

I am surprised at the stats on our possession because they outplayed us in
midfield for long parts of the game. Morison and McCormack looked really good
together though - Colin played a 4-3-3 which made for a very open game which we
could easily have lost.

The amount of times that Warnock (Steven) aimlessly knocked long balls to no
one, seriously I lost count, and we look v vulnerable for any set plays in our
area. Varney man of the match? He missed a header from one yard out last night
stood in the middle of the goal. He can't pass a ball more than five yards and
when he beats a man he usually knocks it straight into touch. FFS the fans have
even created a song taking the piss out of him. How Colin can play him before
Diouf, says it all really.

I"ll start getting excited when our dreadful away form improves, it can't get
worse can it.

Well done GFH on ticket pricing last night, good to see less spaces in ER.

Re: [LU] Becchio Watch

2013-03-03 Thread Phill Shields
I'm not commenting on Becchio because he doesn't play for us any more.

The point has been made, if this is the best team we have had for ages we are
truly f@cked.

Only difference between the two teams yesterday were the penalties. We
certainly didn't dominate the game and as the home team did no where near
enough to deserve the victory.

As for us now playing decent football I really am at a loss. Out midfield has
no quality and certainly don't dictate games. We started very sloppily
yesterday and should have been 2 down in the first 15 minutes. They hit the
post from a move that came from a throw in.

If Warnock is no longer looking at loan players he should give Hall a game.
There is no point playing Morison if he is not going to get some service.
Varney is not a winger, I'll be diplomatic and say no more about Reg.

Results against Leicester & Palace are irrelevant cos this lot will not make
the play offs.

We need to get rid of Colin now and start planning for next season now.

I didn't go last night but listened to the commentary. I'm afraid there was an
air of inevitably about their equaliser from 25 minutes before the end.

Sat deeper and deeper inviting them on. Morison clearly having a mare. We have
probably fastest back 4 in the league and sat on edge of penalty area? Colin
finally takes off McCormack who seemed to be holding up ball well and throws on
Pearce. The latter then fails to pick up the goal scorer.

How many points have we thrown away from set plays and/or in the latter stages
of games? Commentator said last night we haven't scored in 1st half (away
games?) for yonks??

What the f@ck does Colin actually do with them in training?

I get bringing a defender on Richard but unless there is an injury you do not
put on subs for corners. Pearce will of course carry the can for the late goal
but that is harsh because he was hardly up with the pace of the game.

Agree there was nothing more inevitable than that 94th minute goal. Even Thom
Kirwin and Eddie sort of accepted it and immediately started talking about how
good a point it was. That pissed me off even more. I think bringing on another
defender for the last minutes is not a good idea even though on the face of it,
it seems sensible in terms of another defensive body. It did sound we were
sitting deeper and deeper but that's to be expected from a team with our
defensive record winning at the team with one of the best home records. On the
plus side, we are competing, making lots of chances (if not coverting) and
playing some football. That's a definite
 improvement.

This says more about Warnock than Becchio in my view but of course you wouldn't
see that Rich.

He bemoans the "cancer" in the club and that he "over achieved" at Leeds. What
a total cunt he is.

A rubbish player who has struck gold but ultimately has been found out.

Cost less than Berbotov and scores more goals

Re: [LU] Its all Becchio's fault!

2013-06-08 Thread Phill Shields
Rich,

He is no better or worse than the rest of em mate. Howson wasted no time
jumping ship and as for Gradel. Little twat nearly cost us promotion by getting
sent off against Bristol Rovers then celebrating after game like nothing
happened. All footballers are the same. Kiss the badge one minute and out the
door as soon as a better offer is on the table.

Good luck to Becchio, he is a striker and he bagged some goals for us. I don't
mind him making a few bob at Norwich's expense. Might make em think twice
before nicking more of our players eh.

I am heartily sick of Colin looking for sympathy and making more excuses about
the woeful job he did for us.

Phil,

Agree , he is a cunt but he is no bullshitter and the revelation that as early
as December Becchio was looking for a move is a big one in my opinion. Kissing
the badge after the Chelsea goal - I paid £35 to watch that game. How do I feel
as a fan knowing that our Leeds hero was actually trying everything he could to
manufacture a move away from the club I love?

Well actually Phil, it was no surprise to me because I know that Becchio is a
fraud not only because he kidded the Leeds fans he cared when he was only in it
for himself. Leeds had given him the biggest opportunity of his life and he
wasn't going to waste it. Playing in the third division with the likes of
Beckford, Snodgrass, Howson, Gradel etc is a strikers dream, Beckford nearly
bagged 40 and to his credit Becchio got his arse on to a few and managed to get
a few - not 20 though. Lets face it questions should have been asked at that
point (I did) , how can any striker not score 29 in that environment.

Then we got promoted and hit gold in season without Beckford. Snodgrass and
Gradel were n fire and he managed to scrape 20 but then he ruined it with a
woeful season when he just managed to bag double figures . But he'd been
injured and that was a great excuse.

Then he got the job as pen taker and on the back of that and a load of
misguided media praise he bagged his big money move to Norwich,

He then got found out and will never score a goal in the PL, unless given a pen.

He got his money though, so good luck to his family,

But for me he's a crock of shit and the biggest waste of space I've ever had
the misfortune to have to payto watch.

Lets see how his career pans out now - does he care probably not , just like
when he wore the white shirt from December onwards.

true. and on cue out comes an alleged statement that Yeboah yearned for a move
to Liverpool even while he was scoring some of my favourite ever Leeds goals;

Only seen him play in big FA cup games for Latics but he gave Liverpool back
four a torrid time.

Big, brave, can hold the ball and knows where the goal is.

This is a good signing in my view.
