Re: [LU] Charlton
This has been the problem since (roughly) Christmas, if not earlier, last season. The bottom line is that the players upon whom Bielsa relies to win the ball and keep possession for 90 minutes - the superbly fit, strong players like Harrison, Klich, Forshaw, Alioski (and I'd even include Bamford) - are not the players who will create loads of good chances, let alone put them away. Forshaw hasn't scored for three years! To include more creative, chance-making and taking players - Nketiah, Clarke, Costa - in the first XI, Bielsa would have to accept a lower percentage of possession. This is something he's clearly unwilling to do. One partial solution to the problem would be to fix our corners. There's been a lot of talk about our "problem" conceding from set pieces, but as we've let in fewer goals than any other team in the division, this "problem" is only relative. If we turned the same percentage of our corners into goals as we concede from the opposition's corners, we'd win every game. But Bielsa, for all his magic, doesn't seem interested in doing anything other than have Phillips thump the ball into the middle of the box for the opposition to head out. I can't understand why we don't try short corner routines with Pablo/Costa/Clarke/Shackleton playing one-twos along the byline, then sending a low, dangerous cross fizzing into the six-yard box. Re: [LU] Charlton
Yep. I completely agree. It is very frustrating that the problems which stymied us last season remain our problems today. The answer? Someone who can get the byline and get a good cross in, without giving the defence time to set themselves would seem to be the obvious need. At the moment, a large percentage of our attacks end up with Harrison, who both takes too long to so anything with it, and then inevitably his final ball is useless. I'd prefer to see us a) build from both sides (quickly), and in the short term at least I'd try Alioski on the left wing and put our actual left back, Douglas in at left back! If Alioski can manage to keep onside (unlikely I know), then I think he'd be more likely to get that pacey, accurate cross in. It felt like that for most of last season. At the start of the season we seemed to score freely enough but got out of the habit later on. At Reading in about March we scored 3 but it should have been 6. We do have the best goal difference in the division right now. Saying that, these last 2 seasons have been a lot more entertaining than most of the previous 14 - and I suppose at the end of the day I pay to be entertained! So I'll just keep the faith and believe in Bielsa! (By the way, Man City's away kit?) [LU] Charlton
No doubt we'll hear Bielsa trot out the usual we had the possession and chances to win and there's an argument for that although I thought today was a disaster both in our performance and the manager's tactics. At half-time he did what a lot of fans have been asking for and played 2 up front with Bamford and Eddie but then quickly abadoned that and took off Bamford and put on Roberts. In that seccond half we were all over the shop and yes Bielsa did go for a Plan B but it's obvious that he doesn't like doing it but more importantly it's obvious he hasn't a clue what the hell is going on when he's playing. Instructions were being handed to the players by paper and Bielsa and his entourage were all pacing around arms in the air frustrated for most of the second half. We had no central midfield in that 2nd half. Philips sat deep in a back 3 but everytime he got the ball he had no outlet in front of him. All out play had to come down the wings and that just didn't happen today. Helder Costa has been most fans choice to start but today's performance maybe tells you why he hasn't. He was bloody awful. Little chips, dinks, crosses - all to a red shirt and he was unable to take on his man. A real luxury player today we could have done without. On the other wing you've got Harrison, who arguably was are most effective player - he was ineffective but he saw more of the ball and got into more good positions than anyone, Charlton were poor but they had a bit of pace and lots of fight in them and they frustrated the hell out of us. Second half was appalling time wasting but we could have still be playing all night and wouldn't have scored today. We ended the game with a left and right winger who can't cross a ball, two players who are not match fit (Forshaw and Roberts) and a midfielder in Klich who has just completely forgotten how to shoot. He was the biggest disappointment today for me and I think his position should be rethought. Is it all falling apart ? No. but today there was panic and confusion around the team and the way we just stopped playing through midfield second half was terrible. Bielsa will no doubt point to the fact that an extra attacker means being less effective in midfield - yes I get that but being totally ineffective in midfield with one les player has to ask questions around players like Klich who are suppose to be playing in midfield. Scores: Kiko - 2. That goal was a nightmare. What was he doing trying to punch a ball as low as that. Dallas - 6. Showed good energy to get forward but every final ball and every shot was terrible. Allioski - 5. Tried to get forward first half and had one decent shot that was well saved. Cooper - 6. Played the second half a left back in a back 3 and didn't do it very well. Did you a lot of good defensive things. What is going on at corners ? White - 7. Our best defender but again I'd ask about his contribution to defending corners Philips - 5. Struggled against a bit of pace first half which really highlighte how pedestrian he is. Second half he struggled at the back. His passing was off today with many passes going astray. On the positive side, he did get through a hell of a lot of good work and tackles. His set pieces were also decent towards the end. Klich - 4. Poor. Costa - 2. Poorer. Bamford - 4. Should have scored with a point blank header first half but it's just to happening for him. He's obviously frustrated and for me he has to be dropped. Shackleton - 5. He got forward a few times in the first half bu tlike Derby he didn't do anything to impact the game. Was taken off at half-tme. Harrison - 4. Last ball poor all day. Subs: Eddie - 6. Lively. Needs to start - we need to be scoring early. Roberts - 5. One or two nice touches Forshaw - 5. Nearly scored at the end but like all his chances it was a nearly scored. This was a worrying performance because we were all over the shop and I'm not sure where it all leaves us for Tuesday against the Baggies. I'm absolutely gutted. Re: [LU] Charlton
Agreed. I was really disappointed - last home game against a team already down after some good performances I was hoping for a dominating display. Sadly , it was a predictable, muted display with very few good chances created. I thought botaka didn't see enough of the ball and we spent too much time fucking about with the ball at the back. Hardly a display to help Evans keep his job. Phil Hay seems to think Evans is gone - he's had some good results recently but today again showed he is limited tactically. A big summer for the club if we are to be anything other than mid table again. Having only seen Sky's highlights, it didn't seem to me that we bossed the game in the way that Mr Blobby was articulating :-( On the positive side, we're hanging on, just about, to the sh*te non-descript teams in the middle, and have moved above the really sh*te teams, although I can see us finding our level again soon. Still, a point nearer safety - that's the only realistic target this season! Strange game, Leeds fans more interested in what is alleged to be happening off the pitch than on, a strange mix of a UKIP conference - loads of anti-Italian chants and a Religious revivalist meeting, with lots of old favourites getting an airing play all the way and Geldard Boot Boys and cries of undying love for the team. On the pitch we were the best team in the first half and if Sharp had converted the penalty we'd have been deserved leaders at half time. But as always we looked fragile at the back and the midfield let them run at our defence too often and eventually they scored. Not seen the Penalty but Taylor didn't look convincing and Silvestri is the one foreign import we really miss. Some decent build up play tended to fizzle out before becoming really threatening. Taylor and Byram got forward and there were a few decent crosses but nobody there to get on the end. Montenegro and Dawson on for the last few minutes and Dawson got a really good cross in right at the death, but it was bundled away. Yes, I was there when Morison scored, but nothing he showed made it look like he'd add to that in any way shape or form. After the goal there was 10 minutes of sarcastic Steve Morison chants.. we were being sarcastic weren't we? Lots of Time to go Massimo chants, but We don't need a change of owner or manager, just some stability (and half a dozen decent players) Rudi man of the match, no doubt, almost all of his shots and passes hit the target and ran himself ragged, maybe his slowing down in the 2nd half coincided with Charlton getting on top? Bamba had a good game as well, including the obligatory couple of nightmare passes/dribbles. Dawson had 10 minutes and didn't score a hatrick, so we should get rid straight away ;) We were loads better than at Fulham my last game, but we lost - weird game football. [LU] Charlton report
Well we have done it again! Twice this game was won and twice awful defending gave it away. Adryan came back in for Morison and Byram for Beradi and, as expected Cooper replace the suspended Pearce Like so many of our game this season this was another 'game of two halves' this time though it was the game itself rather than our performance that changed. The first half is totally forgettable, we had a few nice little triangles and Adyran showed a lovely piece of skill to let the impressive Warnock fire in a great cross. Warnock then did well at the other end clearing one off the line when Silvestri missed a cross. I said a few weeks ago that Silvestri looks great but we need to see how he reacts to a big mistake -well now we know (after Cardiff) he makes more mistakes ! Second half was a totally different beast as we went forward with purpose and did tear some holes in their defence. The 2 goals were absolute beauties. The first Adryan again impressed linking up down the flank with Warnock and the ball fell to Mowatt F-ing hit it yelled the bloke next to me but Mowatt decided that blasting high and wide was not for him, instead he took it under control put it on his left foot and from the edge of the box put an unstoppable shot into the top corner. That should have been that. We were all over them at this stage and I fancied us to win 2 or even 3 nil. Antenucci, Mowatt and Doukara (a poor night from him) all had shots and half chances. Then as so often before defence frailities brought us down. This time an awful clearance from, the otherwise solid Cooper, hit the attacker and somehow he squeezed it past the keeper into the net. SIlvestri should not have been beaten like that at his near post. Poor all round. This rocked us a bit but we re-grouped and another decent move ended with the ball coming back out to Warnock who elected not to shoot but shovelled it on to Mowatt, who 22yards out this time, hit another lovely curling shot into the top corner - great goal. Game over ? Not for us. A corner to them and the ref points to the spot, a penalty and the equaliser. No idea what the pen was for. According to people on the bus the ref had warned us about pulling in the box, we (Bellusci ?) pulled someone so a penalty. One of those hot topics at the moment but how often do such things go unpunished? The crowd bayed for the refs blood but the players did not complain. We still had time to win it, 10 mins plus 5 injury time, especially as they went down to 10 when one went off injured and all subs had been used. We huffed and puffed a bit but in the end we blew it 2 points needlessly thrown away. Quite a lot of good things, Warnock my MOM, Mowatt good throughout and 2 lovely goals, Adryan has some nice touches. We have promise in this team and if, and it is a big IF, we can cut out the defensive errors, then we can go places over the next few years. We really need to win on Saturday v Blackpool - we probably will since I am missing the game for another f=ing family wedding Dave ___ Leedslist mailing list Info and options: http://mailman.greennet.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/leedslist To unsubscribe, email leedslist-unsubscr...@gn.apc.org John 'Grampa' Sykes Rest In Peace old lad 28th Oct 1938 - 12 Nov 2013 MARCHING ON TOGETHER
Re: [LU] Charlton report
Agree with all of that Dave. According to the radio on the way back, it was Bellusci who was all over one of their players for the penalty. Adam Pope said it technically was a penalty but how many of that type are not given week in week out? Bellusci - I see flashes but the bloke's a liability! Also thought Bianchi had a poor game. Could Redders drop the Italians? Two good goals for us, undone by sloppy defending/goalkeeping. We're starting to need to turn the corner - we must get 3 points on Saturday. I went with very little hope, enthusiasm and optimism and came away with even less. Once again in an attempt to find the right formula Brian made changes, this time White and Tonge after impressive cameos on Saturday came in from the start, the hapless Warnock replaced the hapless Pugh and Wooton came in as right back so that Byram could move further forward at the expense of Stewart. To be fair we actually started quite brightly and although the 17k crowd was one of the smallest of the season they were right behind the team and made a decent amount of noise. We had a couple of good moves - a lovely ball by Ross gave White the chance to cross but he hit it into touch, another cross just failed to meet the head of Smith and then the best chance of the half a great ball by Ross was brilliantly controlled by Tonge a couple of yards out, all he needed to do was hit the target but he blasted over. At the other end we gave them too much room and let them pass it around under no pressure and allowed them a few long range shots which all went straight to Butland. Butland did make one diving save but not sure it counts since the ball was going well wide and he gave away a corner - he even seemed to admit to the fans behind the goal that he thought it was going wide. So the first half came to a close and we had done ok - more of the same second half and we would win, wouldn't we ? Smith was replaced by Hunt at half time and to be honest, he did run around a lot and put in a lot of effort but 90% of it was to no purpose. He seemed to think that shouting with the keeper over time wasting showed his commitment to the cause. Then came another match changing moment, Ross bet his man and let loose a thunderbolt that the keeper just turned onto the post and out ..if only Our passing was getting more and more ragged by this stage, each pass not quite where the man wanted it or at a bad height etc, other passes just totally awful, Charlton were growing more confident and their passing was crisp and to a man in space (not that they were any good). Then came the move that decided it all, they got the ball sprayed it across the park and found their left winger who cut inside Warnock and curved it into the net - a good strike but bad defending and it was a goal we knew was coming 4 or 5 passes before that. We then took off the largely ineffective Wooton (he is not a right back) and brought on Poleon who was welcomed by the crowd as if he was the answer to all our prayers. Sadly he was not, he got the ball deep in our half and looked like he was aiming to run the length of the pitch, but 3 Charlton players chased him down and that was the sum total of his 20plus minutes on the pitch. We did have a few scrambles and then came our best chance of getting something from the game, a bit of melee led to the ball falling to White on the edge of the box , as he strode purposefully forward he was pushed in the back and went over, clear penalty for my money. They argued, the lad who committed the foul lay on the floor 'injured' and generally delayed things. Always a bad sign. Ross had the ball under his arm the whole time - injury time pen on his 150th appearance, surely he would score said my heart - he is going to miss said my head. As you all know he hit it OK but the keeper dived and pushed it out - so that chance went begging and with it the chance of any points at all. The crowd who remained silent about both McDermott and Cellino did vent their spleen on a couple of occasions. David Haigh is a wanker rang out a few times, the SS singers did their 'turn your back on GFH' song. you're not fit to run the club F off to the GFH echoed around the ground the later song the back drop to the exodus at full time A real drudge back to the buses and train station with fans agreeing 50points was the accepted wisdom for staying up and we have 47 - where can we get 3 more points? Surely we can manage that in 6 games but if so where ? So doom and gloom all round. Any admin will certainly mean relegation this season now and even without it , have no doubts we ARE in a relegation fight. It may all come down to beating Barnsley at Oakwell and we know how well we have done there in recent years Leeds United - beyond a joke Dave ___ Leedslist mailing list Info and options: http://mailman.greennet.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/leedslist To unsubscribe, email leedslist-unsubscr...@gn.apc.org John 'Grampa' Sykes Rest In Peace old lad 28th Oct 1938 - 12 Nov 2013 MARCHING ON TOGETHER

Pugh seemed to think he was playing left wing back but on the other side Peltier didnt really get forward much and had Rudy in front of him for most of the game - which was a bit of a waste as we could have done with his 'motor' in the middle of the pitch - which was largely left to Brown and Murphy. Despite the groans when we found out he was playing - this was probably the one game you would pick Michael Brown for - pretty attritional in a bog and he did Ok as did Pugh. Its difficult to say we were the better team but i guess we adapted fairly well - whilst Charlton kept trying to pass it around the morass of a pitch and it rarely flowed. We know we're not good enough for that and so concentrated on hitting areas a bit more. Despite the pitch 2 of McCormacks goals (3rd and 4th were very good) as was their first.Their 2nd was frantically shambolic defending - too scared of giving away a penalty to actually tackle anyone. Our penalty also looked a bit soft. McCormack was clearly the hero - though honorary mentions to Rudy, Brown and Murphy. We thought the last time a Leeds player had got 4 was Smith in Florence - but it turns out it was actually Brian Deane v QPR - Danny Pugh is the common link between those games. [LU] Charlton Away
I actually went to a game for once, so will do a brief match report, as I didn't see any others. Pretty empty ground in bits, they do a lot of very good work in the community but struggle to fill it week in week out and there's no real hard core I ever seem to see when I go. Leeds away end was full as per usual. Leeds fans in great voice. Not that much to shout for early doors as they played by far the better football on a frankly terrible pitch that if we'd only had a few hundred away fans, would probably have been called off. It was bad last year and seemed to have got worse, it was raining but not that much, I think the problem is that it's literally in a valley. Bit weird having a delayed kick off but didn't seem to dim our fans' enthusiasm. Massive bits of the pitch were under water or mud and the ball stuck a lot. Almost Ironically, this hindered them not us. They try and play football but are a bit lightweight. They still have a midfielder at right back - something I wasn't really sure why we never targeted properly. We lined up 3-5-2, McCormack Blackstock up front, Ross on the left, drifting about - maybe they were targeting Wilson. Brown, Crewe lad Austin in a midfield 3. Poleon (?) right wing back, Pugh left wing back. Lees can't remember the other 2 center backs. One came off at half time for the Lithuanian who is a unit. Kenny in goal. We were 5-3-2 half the time. Our first came against the run of play, I missed the build up but saw the smart finish low down in the corner. They pretty much dominated the first half, I'm not sure if this was becasue we sat back, or becasue they were out passing us - we were adapting to the conditions better but hitting a lot of long balls and balls out wide for people to chase. A bit daft as Ross is tiny and never wins anything in the air. Blackstock was largely anonymous in the first half, I think if I'm honest, he was hiding a bit (going goalside of the defender etc. a couple of times) I'd gone for another beer and missed their goal but looking at the goals this morning it was a bit of a thing we never cleared properly and a good finish from them but I think he shinned it. I think they had a weak penalty shout turned down, had a couple of headers over and some shots but I don't think Kenny had too much to save. I think we literally had one shot on goal and scored. Pretty dull football on a shit pitch. Second half the 3-5-2 became 5-3-2 again after we won what looked like a pretty clear penalty. 2-1. Slightly odd. We dropped deeper and deeper and the 5-3-2 became 5-1-3-1 with Brown in front of the back 5, Ross wide wide left and Austin wide wide right and Blackstock on his own - We played balls out wide for either to chase, Austin doing a much better job of it than Ross. I'd say he's a lazy fucker but credit where credit's due, he took his chances today! Whether it was them trying to play football or us dropping deeper and deeper and conceding possession (our ball retention was abysmal, absolutely terrible, rushed clearances, booted and headed forward aimlessly) - I'm not sure. We seemed to have switched off and thought we'd won already, even our fans had gone quiet. Their equalizer came down our right again, some good work from their player who danced rings round us and an 'easy' tap in. I thought we'd go on to crumble and collapse but it was them who folded. Some of their players flat out quit and gave up when we got our 3rd shortly after (their 2nd goal scorer particularly). I think we'd knocked it out long to the flanks, crossed it in, Ross looked to have lost it and was muscled off the ball, but he'd lost his marker and slotted another one in forcefully. Great finish. I think they tried to give it a go for a few mins. We took Blackstock off to a good ovation, he put a shift in second half. Smith, I think came on. I don't remember us being under great pressure, Austin nearly got one but shot over/wide - we got a soft free kick late on (the ref was pretty poor and I think we got a massive rub of the green today (more brown)), Smith was fouling their player and Ross put it exactly where he was and another! great finish for 4-2. Party time. I'd say we probably had 5-6 shots total, 4 on target and 4 goals! Not sure it was men against boys but they definitely gave up at 2-2 and 3-2. We conceded far too much territory and possession and not sure needing to score 3 goals away from home every away game is going to get us far. Brown did a lot of talking, organising, provoking, pointing, blocking etc. We broke the flow of the game up first half, lots of niggly fouls, players going down 'injured' etc. Really put them off their stride. Austin was quiet but very effective, he doesn't say or do much but leads by example - my MOTM if I'm being churlish to Ross, he literally did nothing except score 4. I'd forgotten the Crewe lad was on in the first half and tried to watch him the second. he was

Just back from the charlton match due to a combination of post match celebrations and National Rail making a normal 1 hour train ride into a 3 hour voyage of discovery. Match delayed by about 35 mins but the wonder of the Internet meant that most Leeds fans discovered this before getting to the ground meaning 36 mins extra drinking time meaning most of the Leeds fans were a pint or two more pissed before getting to the ground meaning the away support was even more rambunctious than normal and pretty much sang all the way through. It looked as if there were Charlton fans in attendance today, but apart from a cheer when they scored they were entirely quiet throughout the afternoon. The extra prematch drinking means that even more so than ever I can't provide a particularly detailed précis of the match, hopefully someone soberer and more knowledgeable will be able to provide a detailed review of the afternoons proceedings, but until then here is my tuppencesworth - Brown AND Pugh WHAAAT? 4 shots on target 4 goals! MCcormick 4 touches 4 goals! Paddy made at least 2 fantastic saves, but was caught embarrassingly flat footed for their second. Charlton were probably the best team. Rudy Austin has his own song - to Buffalo Soldier Can't remember the last game I was at that we won by 2 goals What had Diouf done to deserver be on the bench - spoke to some Lees fans who were at the Leeds on the Road event the night before and said that very same question was asked and seemingly a combination of being late to start preseason training, injury and a family issue has meant he's not even considered above Pugh or Brown or even a place on the Bench. Pearce had a good game Austin in not a right winger and was wasted there, especially since the wings were waterlogged and pretty unplayable and most of the play went straight through the middle of the pitch. crackin' day out! ttfn Richard Triumph Computer Services 01273 505214 07974870424 ___ Leedslist mailing list Info and options: http://mailman.greennet.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/leedslist To unsubscribe, email leedslist-unsubscr...@gn.apc.org MARCHING ON TOGETHER

From the Leeds on the Road event tonight, someone asked about Diouf not playing much - McDermott (or McDerMOTt, as the schedule had him) basically said he missed pre-season, he's been off on international duty, been on compassionate leave and he'll not make it through a match. So he prefers to play younger players. Eddie suggested later that he can't run any more (he compared him to Robbie Fowler), and since Leeds have signed up with Prozone to track how much players run in a game, this may have some bearing on things. - Si On 08/11/13 20:08, Richard Naef wrote: BmcD has some choices to make as it looks as if Byram and Warnock are out. I will keep it short and (not so) sweet - last night was very poor indeed, 2 average teams playing poorly in a game devoid of goal mouth action and incident. Neither team deserved more than a point in a dire game played in front of a small and very disinterested crowd The crowd, once again, gives the lie to the 'reduce prices and the place will be packed' argument. It was a Cat C (£20 cheapest with the possibility of getting £5 off if you know a ST holder) and yet less than 18k bothered. Norris was OK, Diouf showed bits of class, Byram looked tired and is wasted at full back, Becchio, Brown and Varney were all poor. We failed once again to keep a clean sheet I was disappointed that Hall did not get a run out - he is supposed to have pace and the ability to take players on. If he is not ready why did we let Poleon go to Bury ? Hopefully Austin will be back on Saturday to add a bit of drive and energy into the team The goal was reasonable - Byram was chopped down but the ref played on as the ball came to Brown, he crossed it into the box and Varney rose well and headed it down towards Norris who turned and hit a good shot that the keeper had no chance with. That was pretty much our only shot on target all game. The equaliser was poor defending - we let them pass it along the edge of our area unchallenged and then one of them shot through a crowd of players and the ball found its way into the bottom corner. They were no better than us and they only had 2 other chances of note - one where Lees(?) miscued it onto the bar , very close to an own goal and then Kenny made a good save right at the death to save a point. Lets hope for a massive improvement on Saturday and we can get revenge for last years hammering at the hands of their tall lad Dave ___ Leedslist mailing list Info and options: http://mailman.greennet.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/leedslist To unsubscribe, email leedslist-unsubscr...@gn.apc.org PETE CASS (1962 - 2011) Rest In Peace Mate

Ah but Eddie Gray and the other announcer said 17,000 is good for other teams and there was probably good stuff on tv (he really did say something of the sort). Total refusal to admit something is not right at ER.
