2020-12-01 Thread M.W.Foscue
Joe,Good info you shared. Thanks. Most folks don't know about another "shipping service" - Greyhound Package Express. They have size & weight restrictions - but for some of the LOM items I've seen sold on our Group's threads their size/weight would fall within their limits. The maximum weight per package is 100 pounds. The maximum
dimensions that we can accommodate are 29″ H x 47″ W x 82″ L. Just thought I'd make ya'll aware of another possible route to go when shipping stuff.  It helps to "comparison shop" when shipping bulky/heavy stuff.  This service gives you one more to check out.Cheers!Mac-Original Message-

ok, some additional points... you could ship FedEx, up to 108 inches... so that should get you 8 ft. pcs. easily... I would stick to the delrin nuts, as using a brass nut would certainly last longer than a delrin nut, but you would be taking a chance that the brass nut could wear out the acme rod... yes, the brass is softer than the steel, but it is still metal on metal... and if anyone did buy a 12 ft. length of rod, and shipped it 9 and 3(+/-), you could take a 4" piece of rod off the 3 ft. piece and make a tap from it... it is not difficult, as this is what I did to make a tap and make my own black nuts for my Legacy machine... material purchased from McMasterCarr, and was very inexpensive and it was the size I needed dimensionally, so I only had to drill the tap hole... the work was very quick and very easy... there is a posting on this groups page covering this work... ACME Threaded Rod for LOMs - 5/8-4

2020-12-01 Thread M.W.Foscue
I changed to Subject line - to make this info MUCH easier to search for/find in the future.A BIG THANK YOU, Joe for the VERY useful link.I called them and talked with a very helpful lady - Annette. They sell the 5/8-4 Acme threaded rod in 6' and 12' lengths. The 6 footers are shippable via UPS; the 12 footers - Not.  12 footers will have to via motor carrier.I asked her - since they don't have 8 foot rods, if we needed one, would they cut a 12 foot one to 8 foot and ship us both pieces (8' & the ~4' cutoff). She said "Yes, But:"  The packaging will add to length - so the rod would have to be cut a bit less than 8' to keep it under the 8 foot max for UPS.They also have/sell nuts in the same thread count/pitch - in steel, Delrin, and brass.  My thinking is you could order some in Delrin and or brass, cut them in half, then embed the two pieces in material that forms that "clamping" device.  If you did this using the brass nut, you'd possibly never have the "wearing out" problem again.Annette is sending me more info that I will share via this Subject line in a day or two.Cheers!Mac-Original Message-

FYI:  I called the company Turin provided the link to (Roton Products, Inc in MO) and asked if they made/carried Acme Screw rod in 5/8-4.The answer is "no".  I asked if they knew of any place that might - answer:  "Unfortunately, no.".SIf anyone finds a source for the Acme Screw/rod used on our LOMs, PLEASE post it.  SO that it will be EASY to find by folks searching for that info later, PLEASE don't hide it in this thread.  Instead, PLEASE start a NEW Topic - like "LOM ACME Threaded rod".Thanks folks.24 days 'til Christmas (for those not counting)!Mac-Original Message-

Re: Sources for the Template Follower Styluses

2020-12-01 Thread 'joe biunno' via Legacy Ornamental Mills
in regards to the follower pins, if you have one follower, could you just
add bushings to that follower pin, to increase the diameter of the pin...
or make one follower and add different diameter bushings to that...
McMasterCarr has drill bushings of varying inside and outside diameters...
only challenge would be to drill and tap each for a set screw... also easy
way to go with 16th's diameters, if the need should ever arise to make a
"kiss" cut on the workpiece... might make for an interesting project for
those who don't have a metal lathe... Joe B.

But on the good side of things, I have been playing around with the idea for
years. By using a 5/8-8 acme screw would slow down you pitches of your gears by
half,  If you use a motor drive your standard gear set would be able to give
you a pretty nice finish. (More cuts per inch  is exactly what you need to get
a better finish on you parts you make.since you have the lower part, just copy
it,, plastic's are easy to cut , I don't think is would be to hard to make...
I wish you luck on this project, I Honestly do not think it will be hard to do,
and will offer you some very real advantages for you mill, that others do not
have. (that is with out buying a .5 gear set.)

The plastic guide that attaches to the rod is the only thing that still needs

Thanks Curt,

Yea I'd prefer to have original parts and not have to switch them around.
I'm a bit of a stickler like that.
So if you or someone else has one that would be great. Maybe even Tim K.
would know of have dimensions to match one?

Everyone is going to ask what you all have with it and want to see pix.
Could you start down loading them and would you be willing to ship?
Does it have a drive motor and speed control system, accessories etc...

Re: What is this part

2020-12-01 Thread 'Curt George' via Legacy Ornamental Mills
I would suggest that since you own two directional gears, just take one apart
and use that.  Its just two screws that need to be taken out and then replaced.
(keep the old gears just in case?)  OR that is a pretty simple bracket to make,
why not make your own?  Take an old plow or some farm equipment that you are
not using any more... ;-P
I will keep an eye open for one for you, I just may have an extra?
(somewhere???)

Re: new here and selling

2020-12-01 Thread Turin A
Good Morning all..
Arkady - it is an odd size at 5/8x8 and I tracked down a 8' length from
Roton Products. It was $62.00USD in 2017. Here is the company page,
currently at 8.07 a foot:

https://www.roton.com/family/acme-right-screws-and-nuts-7059285/

Bill - I build lots of things and have no problem building the split nut
but must have stopped looking for was to do it. I did not know until you
mentioned about the tap on ebay. Thanks!

Tim- I am not opposed to shipping but I feel it would be cost prohibitive
because of its size (broken down of course it is still bulky). Local would
be preferred but not the only thing possible.
As for price I have no clue. I was advertising it in the local craigslist
for $800 with very little action. I thought about fixing it so it was
completely operational but have too many hobbies at the moment (although
Bill turning me on to the acme taps, hu). I live in Pasadena CA
just outside of LA where wood working is not a common hobby. I found this
little corner of the web to help with the right price and it looks like
this may be the right place to sell it. I am open to suggestions

Thank you all,
Turin
