Re: Wood Chuck Tour by Mike Pung

2017-08-07 Thread 'joe biunno' via Legacy Ornamental Mills
hey tim...to start, that is a split nut set up I had in my "extra parts"
drawer...as it turned out, it fit perfectly on my recently acquired
1500...but as fate would have it, the half of the nut that does have the
threads, is a perfect match to my larger machine(1 1/4" wide)...your
suggestion of widening the split is excellent, but I cannot do that since I
encapsulated the split nut so it cannot "twist" out...perhaps a bit
dangerous, as if the machine has a problem, the nut won't be the part that
gives way and something else will break...living life in the fast
lane!...LOL!...but on the flip side, I would not want the nut to loosen and
ruin a work piece...pick your poison!...and as far as the wear patterns, as
shown in the photo, they are not wearing deeper...they are wearing sideways
only...sorry for the poor picture quality...so sanding the block will not
help in this situation, on this particular block...but I don't know if any
blocks do wear deeper, as I have a few that have all worn sideways(I save
everything!...even useless, worn parts...LOL!)...I will be making new,
split nuts so the 3-D printer thing sounds interesting, but I would have to
see a part made to judge if the tolerances are acceptable...the casting
idea seems doable, but I do a lot of casting and there can be shrinking
issues so maybe the tolerances become too tight...so, like the saying goes,
"you go home with the girl you brought to the dance!"...I will be
tapping!... old school!...LOL

2017-08-04 Thread Tim Krause
Joe, I'm seeing your pictures on a large screen and now see what you are
pointing out about the sideways wear. I'm wondering if a longer split
nut would help spread out the load. Go from a 4 thread engagement to a
6 or 8. Is that that the split nut from your monster machine?

The wear patterns I see is the thread gets deeper and the split nut does
not fully seat. That's why sanding away the bottom surface works. You
need to catch it early before the nut is nearly ruined like yours.

Stan brings up an interesting idea about using a 3d printer. Is nylon
6/6 available for those machines? Possibly a material change to a
harder plastic might help such as nylon 6 or PTFE. These are thoughts
off the top of my head. Tensile strength may vary :-).

tim, my reference was not to the nut turning sideways...it is that the nut
is just wearing out due to so many travels up and down the X axis...the
wear is not "into" the threads of the nut, but rather to each side of the
thread...in the worn photo, you can see that the thread is now a centered
"V", where originally it was square...I am following up with this comment
as I thought I did not explain it very well, but I think we are on the same
page...joe

If your nut is turning sideways, there is too much friction in the system.  Now
I don't know if this applies to the early machines, but the top hat bushings in
the new machines are notorious for this problem.  There was a final update to
the split nut that had shoulders that prevented the split nut from twisting,
but without solving the friction issue it lead to stripping the nut instead of
just twisting the nut out of the holder.  I don't have a picture of this, but
there is a conversation in the group that had a photo.

Knowing what I know now, I would make a tap from a piece of existing acme.  I
do own a 5/8-4 acme tap that I imported from England via a eBay seller.  There
is nobody in the states that would even entertain the idea of one.  If I
recall, they were old stock and never made again by the supplier.  If anyone
has a source, it would be good to know about.

No the trick only works on the model 1000 and newer machines (aluminum). I
personally think you should update the split nut to be like the model 900's
or revo. That vintage split nut is just too complicated to bother with.
Just my humble opinion. I'm sorry I did not get back to you on this post,
lately I've been missing too much :-(

Richard,

I'm a little late to this party, but in most cases you can sand the nut so the
thread sits deeper and the rod forms a clean thread.. Can you take a photo of
your split nut so I can evaluate if this trick will work for you. The 4tpi
acme is a very difficult thread to find. I did purchase a tap a very long time
ago on ebay that did come from the UK, so there's hope that a tap does exist.
Yes, Delrin is the correct material, but Mikes idea might also work.

2016-07-02 Thread Okla Mike (Liltwisted)
It was just a spur of the moment video, a one take and upload. There
where a couple places I said the wrong name of gears but the gist was
there. Richard I had you in mind for this video, glad you liked it.

As far as the drive nut, I was thinking of an epoxy cast right onto the
threads. Just grease up the threads and pull the worn half off, then
build a dam around the area and pour it full. I would fill the pivot
holes with dowel rods and then when you are ready to remove the cured
cast, remove the dowels and drill through the new cast. then remove the
new cast and start the fitting process so it will hinge and lock. I
think it will work. Just need to find a good epoxy or add brass
shavings to it as a better wear surface.

Re: Wood Chuck Tour by Mike Pung

2016-07-02 Thread rchrd . ellis1
Thanks for that Bill,
The half-nut is about 3/4 worn out at the moment, the Leadsrew was very
rusty when I bought the Woodchuck, so am using it while I test all the
bits and pieces out.
I presume that you mean a threaded rod in *acme form* and not plain 4 TPI
rod and then allowing the acme leadscrew to form the thread to *acme
shape, *I think it might take a long while to form in Delrin !!!???
Cheers

RE: Wood Chuck Tour by Mike Pung

2016-07-02 Thread Bill Bulkeley
It might be possible to make a 5/8x4tpi acme tape to make a delrin half nut by
buying a small piece if threaded bar the same as the leadscrew and grinding
grooves in it like a tap has, then turn a taper on it the same as a tap.

It wouldn’t work on metal but it would probably cut delrin at least for a
couple of times. something to think about as you will probably never be able to
buy a half nut.

Mike

I can see it now, thanks for your time and effort, as you know I have a
Woodchuck and am just getting to grips with it

It was a bit rusty and several things wrong , like, wires adrift in the switch
boxes, and limit switches not lining up.

The rusty Leadscrew took a long time on the wire wheel of the grinder, I now
have to get a new half-nut as it is well worn. My metal work lathe only goes
down to 8TPI Pitty as I could make a new one out of Delrin (is that the right
stuff to use ?? ) I don't know if I can do it a 4TPI tap in Delrin

I find your Videos very helpful and interesting, thanks a lot.
