Thank you for all the valuable information that you have been providing over
the many years. I'm a new Legacy Mill owner and have learned a lot by reading
your posts. Thank you.

I have some question for Curt George, but anyone can chime in and share their
thoughts.

Over the last two months, I have purchased two Legacy mills, one model 1000
(used but in great condition with lots of gears and goodies) and one model 1800
(a brand new 2004 model, still in its boxes).

I'm in the process of putting together the 1800. The tip on the grooved rail
will help ensure that I do it correctly.

On the Legacy model 1000, my first upgrade is replacing the plastic bushings in
the headstock and tailstock with ball bearings.

Curt, referencing your YouTube video on the "Spindle Drive Modification"

I’m impressed and understand your video description and demo of the spindle
drive. I would like to incorporate this upgrade into my Legacy model 1000.

 Questions:

On the DC drive motor, what brand, model and torque value and speed would you
recommend?

On the DC motor controller what brand and size would be best?

Would a reversible controller and motor have an advantage?

Another option to achieve variable speed and direction control, would a 3-phase
motor and controller. Would that be a good choice?

Curt, on a side note, I started collecting and using Shopsmith tools about 6
years ago. I also noticed that you have Shopsmith tools in your shop. I took
note that you had successfully adapted Shopsmith parts to your legacy – great
job!

Even

 Questions:

On
the DC drive motor, what brand, model, torque value and speed would you

On
the motor controller what brand and size would be best?

Would
a reversible controller and motor have an advantage?

Also, would a 3-phase motor work using a SMV frequency inverter controller to adjust speed,
direction? The SMV frequency controller takes 125±AC input and converts it to 220±v
3-phase.  This system allows for speed and direction control.

There are other ways to mound a spindle motor on your legacy I chose the swing
away type with

A gear, this when incorporated with all the different legacy gears gives a
greater range of speeds with the variable speed gear motor from very slow to
quite fast.

I took
note that you had successfully adapted Shopsmith parts to your legacy – great
job!

I agree with your encouraging viewers to explore their imaginations without
limits.

To: Curt George and all the members of the Legacy Google Group

Thank you for all the valuable information that you have been providing
over the many years. I'm a new Legacy Mill owner and have learned a lot by
reading your posts. Thank you.

I have some question for Curt George, but anyone can chime in and share
their thoughts.

Spindle Drive Modification

2023-02-11 Thread Nathaniel Bacon

To: Google Groups - Legacy Ornamental Mills

I’m new to Legacy Mills, and this is my first post. I have been reading
many of the various posts and have gathered a lot of good, important and
useful information from them. I thank all of you.

I’ve also watched the various Youtube.com videos and have learned a lot
from the oldest to the newest.

Over the last two months, I have purchased two Legacy mills, one model 1000
(used but in great condition with lots of gears and goodies) and one model
1800 (a brand new 2004 model, still in its boxes).

I'm in the process of putting together the 1800. The tip on the grooved
rails is a big help to make sure that I put the tool together correctly.

On the Legacy model 1000, my first upgrade is replacing the plastic
bushings in the headstock and tailstock with steel ball bearings
assemblies.

Even though I have some questions for Curt George, I encourage anyone to
voice their comments.

Curt:

Reference: YouTube.com video: *Spindle Drive Modification* (131) The
Spindle Drive Motor - YouTube <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXCC-EolhjQ>.

I’m impressed and understand your video description and demo of the spindle
drive.

I would like to incorporate this upgrade into my Legacy model 1000.

 Questions:

On the DC drive motor, what brand, model, torque value and speed would you
recommend?

On the motor controller what brand and size would be best?

Would a reversible controller and motor have an advantage?

Also, would a 3-phase motor work using a SMV frequency inverter controller
to adjust speed, direction? The SMV frequency controller takes 125±AC input
and converts it to 220±v 3-phase. This system allows for speed and
direction control.

Dusty Dave

how did those calm gears mesh up with the Legacy spindle shaft?
Do you have any other close up pictures? This is an awesome drive
center.
thank you very much for shairing.

He used 2 Toyota Avalone cam gears and bearing pulley VW  timing belt to
connect the spindle to a dc gear motor.  There is a matching speed controller
as well.  This motor is reversible and is strong enough to drive his rotary
 table.

 Here's some photos.

Re: Spindle Drive Modification

2011-11-17 Thread Tim Krause
I'm not sure how the cam gears bolt up to either the motor or the legacy
spindle shaft. I know there was some machining involved. I'm also not sure
the detail on the motor other than it's a 1/4 hp. I don't know the total
rpm range. Hopefully Dave will fill me in.

As far as the rotary table goes, it's an awesome deal. I have most of the
construction photos and I've been planning to show the group the entire
project, but I think something was missing. I've shown bits of it in the
past, this weekend I'll figure out what I'm missing.
