They look awesome! I’d be curious as to how to figure the start/pitch/diameter
formula. The manual gives some easy calculations for the rope/barley twist
spirals, and how diameter and starts affects the pit. I’m guessing if you are
using a 1/2” bit, and taking away 1/2” on each side of the material you want to
leave, we’ll say 1/2” for example, that would total 1 1/2”’s and a 3 start
would require the 4.5” pitch gear? So everything is even top and bottom? Or if
you left 1” of material would make it 2”, or the 6” pitch gear for a 3 start……

To keep it simple the number of starts increases the pitch by the dia of the
cutter

So a barly or rope single start spiral with a say a 2 inch wide bit

You would have 2inch bit, 2inch pitch , 2 inch dia work

A 2 start you would have a 2inch bit but a 4 inch pitch

A 3 start you would have a 2inch bit but a 6 inch pitch

A 4 start you would have a 2inch bit but a 8 inch pitch

And so on for each start after you finish the first start you disengage the
leadscrew nut and slide the saddle along 2inches and reengage the leadscrew nut
and commence to mil

Great I'm reaching out to Arkady again to see about his pay pal so we can
use that route as it seems to be the safest option.

Thanks

Hello All, in reply to VA Oak and Mac I recall when Sweden changed from Left to
right and they did it by having a total traffic movement ban for three days
while they changed road layouts, signage etc.

The odd and even numbers idea was done in Paris France as an anti pollution
measure and as a way of lowering traffic levels in the city.

They need to do something like this in London today with the average speed
across the city now down to 3 (yes THREE) miles per hour!!

I have the dubious pleasure of having to traverse a section of the wonderful
M25 London ringroad motorway (for this read CAR PARK) twice a week.as I travel
over the Dartford crossing to Kent and back.

You may notice a change of TAG for me as my email provider is closing down
their free service after 12 years. I am now calling myself ShopsmithUK with a
new email address, as I am the UK agent for this machine, so I hope that
doesn't confuse anyone.

Tim may remember me from when I purchased my Legacy REVO from a lovely guy
called Mac who used to be a contributor to this forum. I have to admit that
since taking over my Shopsmith agency (Just starting my 4th year in this
venture) I have been very short on project time to play with my REVO. I did use
it very effectively to machine up parts for my workbench project but mainly
doing cut-out work with the router. That was four years ago now and since then
I have just been watching the projects of you guys.

I keep promising myself that I will have a play as the REVO came with all the
toys, Rotary table, out board table and Tim's fantastic Wave accessory which I
have played with and made loads of sawdust and weird shapes but nothing
consistent as I kept on messing up the process. Same with the spirals, I am
just a bit thick when it comes to working out the revolutions and spaces.

Maybe when I finally take the plunge to retire like UK Roger I will start to
have the time to make sense of the procedures.

This lead to French generals during the early struggles for dominion of
the Americas going counter contrary to camping and marching in order to
put spies off the scent when they were at rest.  Napoléon was the
General who actually changed the old rule to the new one based on the
success of the tactic in the wars between the French and English in
America. If you recall that the English were warring with the French way
before the eventual arguments which lead to the breakup of the Americas
into the form they now hold.
Early wagon and coach travel would no doubt have followed the defacto
left side due to the need to be able to use a whip and draw a gun. Early
Americans were very much an independent and rebellious lot so the notion
of rules telling you what side of the road to drive no would have always
been a source of argument as to who had the right of way.
There will no doubt be lots of issues making more of the debate such as
the design of the American stagecoach but in general by the time of the
coming of the motor car rules had to be drawn up as chaos on the roads
was beginning to ensue. Early film of San Francisco and London as cars
were becoming more mainstream show how there appears to be no Rule of
which side do I drive at all. France and subsequently Independent
America chose the right side due to their history and convention and
Britain and it's dominions chose the left.
The truth of the argument is there is no Right or Wrong (left) side it
is all down to history.

2017-01-25 Thread Okla Mike (Liltwisted)
I know the standard wheel spacing was determined by the width of two
horses, so when the old rutted streets were starting to be used by
anything different than the old chariot wheel base, it was a constant
fight and would break wheels popping in and out of the ruts. So when
you see that limousine, sports car, or diesel truck rolling down the
highway, it's wheel spacing was designated by a couple horses asses.
OK fine, I'll get back to work.

Bill,

Interesting "History lesson" you described below. I just found this old
email while searching for email from your personal email - vs The Groups.

As I recall, there is a similar explanation as to which way spiral
staircases "spiral". The spiral direction is done that way in order for
the "defender" (the one "up" the staircase) to be able to effectively
wield his sword. While the "attacker/aggressor" is at a disadvantage
because his sword arm and "swing room" is restricted - unless they are
left-handed.

then go older at the top of the page where is says topic,to see older topics,.
I have to be honest with you, I liked the older format better. but there are

Is there any topic you are looking for directly? Perhaps someone here would

Hi to all, reading the topic of shipping your machine Dexter, (I
won't say anything nasty just in case you're THE Dexter on TV)
and I was shocked at the price quoted for diesel. Living in the
UK we really get screwed on this. In 2008 we were paying $6 per
US gallon and today it's $8.64 and it is due to rise again for
environmental reasons.!!

On another note does anyone in the membership ship stuff to the
UK?

Sorry, I know nothing to do with woodworking but the last bit
does relate to buying tools.

Regards to all, from Martin, of Martinsbootfair.

The SHIPPING was about $200 - the machine I got for a deal of
$850. No
legs, but most of the important accessories. The shipping
today would
probably be more now that diesel fuel cost $4.00 per gal.

Hi, I looked at this item here in the UK but have been put off by the review
of it.
  http://www.axminster.co.uk/fisch-flexi-curve-prod783040/#bottomsection

It comes in three lengths 600, 1000 and 3000mm with the longer two being
critised for being way too stiff to get a satisfactory curve. The weird thing
Tim found originally, although expensive does seem the best. For me, I will
just stick to the bow string approach and mark out onto a ply template to cut
on the bandsaw. Slower but I'm not in any hurry.
Have a look at the review and search out other reviews before buying maybe?

Yes that was Tim, that was looking for a flexible template. (Good find! I
have not ever seen this one before!) I think that I just might buy one for my

The Ribbon twist looks nice too.
What kind of wood is that,Bill?

to post, ref the last auction and shipping conversation. I
know Roger watches (Hi Roger!) and I said hello to him in

one of the guys from Legacy who was showing the latest in the
CNC machines for sale. I own a REVO with lots of extras which
I have not yet mastered as I am still getting to grips with
the basics of the machine. I spoke to Tim, recently and was
expressing my appreciation of the archve here and said I
was slowly working my way through the postings and gaining
lots of insight into how to use my machine. I am still a long

Hello George
Do you have any pictures of this segmented bowl? Perhaps someone could give
some incites on this project for you? Sounds like a neat project.

I find as we grow, we learn and strive for more. Many of my past projects I
can look back apon and see little things that I could have or should have
done differently.Live and Learn Right? Well at least that is why I am
here. to grow and get better, Step by step.(or perhaps It should be spindle
by spindle.) we all get better. ;-)

Have a great day.
AND KEEP IN TOUCH.

C.A.G.

Well, I am here also...sitting in the weeds. George in MN. I am using
my 900 more than ever trying to make candle holders for the
Minneapolis Farmers Market. Getting better at it but my skills are
still limited. Really want to get to a point where I can look at a
piece and have a good idea how it was done. Size of stock, bits used,
gears used, etc. Not there yet.
I am eyeing a segmented bowl on a short open barley twist post to use
for a covered cake/pie plate. I have tried to duplicate that post
couple of times but not quite there yet.

Hi Martin and the rest of the gang.

Yes I watch this feed religiously.

Martin, the man with the beard in Kent was Andy Anderson the originator of
the Legacy. The weekend before our show he had been doing show time somewhere
in the US, he turned up at Salt Lake City airport to fly to UK and found he had
left his passport at home so instead of arriving in UK on the Wednesday morning
he came in on the Thursday and our show was on the Friday Saturday. Monday he
flew back to Salt Lake and then on to another show.

I hope to be posting something of considerable interest to the Legacy manual
machine group in the very near future. It will not be a project that I have
made, my tool business keeps me away from the Legacy machine and my woodturning.

  Regards
  Roger

Hi All,

I don't mind CNC chat at all, as long as it applies to ornamental turning or
the Legacy equipment. It's the future and I know we have people on the list
that own both manual and cnc machines. I encourage those user to speak up
and show off, or talk about the problems of computer controlled woodworking.

This remind me that another member here, Rich Goldner, is still going strong
with his Wizards for Mach3 that enable you to use your 4th axis as an
indexer for making polygons, reeding, tapers, rounds, engraving text and
more. I'm not a user of his software, but it looks good to me.

Now those are cool! Tell us more about Delrin.
I have a 3D laser scanner kit coming this week. It will allow me to generate
a 2.5D or 3D STL file that can be pulled into an CAD package to produce the G
code. If all goes well I will be able to do scans for you within a month.

Re: Digest for legacy-ornamental-mills@googlegroups.com - 6 Messages in 2 Topics

2010-03-23 Thread Stickman
All those pieces are made from delrin, which is a tough but easily
machined industrial-grade plastic. My swords are functional art,
designed for a lot of high-impact abuse. This material stands up to
those demands better than any hardwood I've seen. A lot of common
items are made from it, like the wheels on Hotwheel cars, plastic
gears, etc. Unlike nylons or even ABS, it cuts very smoothly and
isn't chippy like polycarbonate. Delrin is a trademarked name. The
generic name is acetyl. I only order it in black, though I believe
the uncolored version is an off-white. It's available in both flat
and round stock as well. The lighting in the bottom photo shows the
coloring, but all my pieces look like that. Though there is no grain
in acetyl, I get that effect by sanding and then buffing with
jeweler's rouge, which impregnates the surface with a reddish tint.

At some point I've love to have a 3d scanner. Aside from some old
pieces I have on my wall, I know an antique dealer who specializes in
S.E. Asian artwork and weapons. I'd love to be able to do more
accurate reproductions. Some of those old swords have engraved blades
and highly detailed carved and even jeweled handles.
