Re your problem with Merged persons in the smaller file still remaining in
the Master:

It is better to leave both people and enter a note for each one saying why
they should be merged. You are right that the master file will still
retain the two original people, remember it was not changed while you were
on the research trip. The Intellimerge will note the difference in Notes
and those two will then be flagged during the intellimerge as changed. If
you merge in the smaller file then there is no second person in the
smaller file to be found during the intellimerge. It only works for people
who are in both files.

Some problems I haven't worked out:
If I do a merge in the subsidiary file the merged person remains in main

After the subsidiary file is merged the multimedia files referenced to

Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant Book Report problem

2006-08-10 Thread Cathy
The problem is that if you use the Quoted Name in narrative but
remove the Quoted name in Name lists and where the full name is used,
then there is nothing in the text that says that the person was
called by quoted name.

As I've often said, I'd like a sentence saying that X was known as Y
where Y is the Quoted Name. For many of my people it isn't a case of
was also known as as in AKA or was sometimes known as but was
always known as.

I get over the problem by not removing the quoted name though
sometimes I'd like to.

I don't add a name as quoted name and AKA.
If someone wasn't always known by a nickname, I add it as an AKA, not
a quoted name.

Sorry, I'm only coming in late on this, as I've been away from my
computer for a few days.

Just to point out to you, Henry, that the Irish (and Scottish) parts
of names which you mentioned (Mac/Mc, O', Ui, Ni, Etc.) are not
generally considered Surname Prefixes, but are rather part of the
surname itself.

For example, my surname is McGlone (sometimes written Mc Glone i.e.,
with a space). This is an anglicised version of my name in Irish (or
Gaelic), which is Mac Giolla Eoin, translated as The Son of the
servant of John. My surname, however, is *NEVER* Glone. The Mc
part is the anglicised version of Mac, which is the Irish (or
Gaelic) word for son (of), but it's definitely part of the surname.

If a surname prefix field was added to Legacy, I'm sure it would be
useful for many people, but just to be aware that Irish surnames would
not fall into this category.

Dermot.

Muckian, comes from the Irish O Mochaidhean, and was sometimes spelled O
Muckyan. In the last century, some family members have changed the
spelling to Mackian or MacKian, so we apparently have versions with O, Mac and
no prefix, all in the same family. AKA doesn't help.Even more
interesting is the situation in my home country, Wales, where many
Welsh-speakers are abandoning surnames altogether and are going back to the
old patronymic system. My daughter, for example, could if she wished call
herself Catrin ferch Meical ap Ioseff - Catrin daughter of Michael son of

The soon-to-be-released training video, Picturing your Legacy: a Video
Guide to Working with Digital Pictures in Legacy explains these
situations
in detail. Basically there are 2 rules when digitizing pictures/documents:
 1) scan at a higher resolution, which it seems that you are and 2) save as
an archival-type image format. This would include .tif and .bmp. I
wouldn't
suggest .gifs if you're wanting to retail all the image data.

The following training CDs will be available hopefully early next week:

Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant Book Report problem

2006-08-10 Thread Leon Chapman

To get close to what you want to do, try the following:

In the fields:
1. Given name: William Clarence Buddy
2. Surname: Smith

Do not use the AKA field.
When you go to reports, go to report options, Tab - Format select
Use quoted names for narratives

Then in your report, the full name is used as:
William Clarence Buddy Smith
the first time and then Buddy is used everywhere else.
