Re: [LegacyUG] Does Legacy print all spouses and all children on ancestor reports and import dual dates?

2006-10-02 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
I am not sure what you meqan by irregular and dual
dates. if you mean words like 'infant' in the date
field, Legacy uses the list of 'words' used by the LDS
church. I am guessing you mean 15 Jan 1751/1752 by
dual dates. They are automatically converted, but I
always check that it converted the correct way. I have
not found a report that losses some of the children,
but double-half children may be left out on some of
them. I have a similar situation with my Norwegian
branch that of about four thousand I am related to
80%, and they did the same intermarrying and out of
marriage children they were cousins to. You must judge
if the reports work to your specifications. I think it
will, but each of us want different things.

Gwen, I have met this sort of problem when trying to view a large picture (
usually a census that I haven't reduced in size) in say the source viewer.
There is no difficulty in displaying it in Irfan View or similar. In my case
it is always a memory problem and I cut the size of the file to 25% and all
is well.

I cannot thank you enough for your wonderful email, and the time it must

I was too experiencing problems with ver 5 and this is replicated in ver 6
I find it strange that I can view pictures in page I create to Html or Pdf

I cannot find out how to extract the Resource Meter, as it is in a cab

I am trying

I need to extract the cab file first I believe. Still working on that one.
I too believe that there is a memory leak of some sort, as the reading I

exported my

Gwen,
The problem with W98 is the memory that is used to keep track of running
applications like Legacy Family Tree. This is a fixed amount of memory that
is not affected my the amount of RAM your computer has. It can not be
changed. The information stored there is dynamic in nature so when an
application (or part of an application) closes down, memory used by that
application should be released. If it isn't, eventually you run out of
"system resources".
My experience has been that version 6 apparently has problems with releasing
used resources when moving from one part of the application to another. This
even happens when using the same features I used in version 5. So it doesn't
seem to be associated with the new features of version 6.
Since I run a dual boot system (meaning I also have XP on the same computer)
if I need to, I just reboot into XP to finish my task at hand. (For those of
you who are interested, I access the same data file from W98 and XP).
Gwen, what I suggest is that you do is what I have done. Microsoft has
provided a handy resource monitoring application called the "Resource
Meter". When running, it resides in the system tray down by the clock. You
should be able to find "Resource Meter" by going to Start - Programs -
Accessories - System Tools. If it isn't there, you can create a shortcut on
your desktop by right clicking on the file name and selecting "send to" and
then "desktop (short cut)". The file name is RSRCMTR.EXE and is located in
the C:\Windows folder. I have the application start up when booting my
computer because I put the shortcut in the "Startup" folder.
When "Resource Meter" is running, you will get a warning message when the
resources get low. You might be able shut down other applications that are
running at the time to free up resource memory that Legacy Family Tree
needs. Or, exit Family Tree and reboot your computer to create the most free
resource memory.
For further reading, see:
http://www.informationweek.com/story/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=17200581
I believe there must me a memory leak that needs to be fixed by the
programmers. Using the same features in version 6 that were used in version
5 and running into memory resource problems would seem to indicate that
something changed with how memory resources are now being used in version 6.
I don't believe you should have to upgrade to XP to solve this problem. I
also believe that there are a lot of Legacy uses that wouldn't have a clue
as to how to upgrade to XP especially if they are senior citizens like me. I
don't think Legacy wants to force these people to upgrade to XP. It could be
a costly mistake if they ended up loosing some of their files from other
applications in the process.
I hope this helps you Gwen (and maybe others running W98) to at least
monitor the memory usage and to determine the applications that may be using
a lot of resource memory. I would be suspicious of any of the Norton
applications that may be running.

Hi Ron
Thankyou for your email.
That is okay.
I am running Win98 SE and my ram is 512MB. I have recently exported my
records and then
imported them again, and although this has alleviated some of the problems I
still do have errors.
The main one is when I ask for a Preview/screen print of any report I cannot
get the pictures to
show, only placeholders and borders. When I take a report to Html, Pdf I
get the pictures. The
Preview/screen option is intermittent and I have been able to get images in
view about 3 times,
(in about 3 dozen that I have tried.)
Thanks for your interest

Hi Elizabeth,

You said: "It had lengthy (non-standard) source text that was cut to
(standard) three lines by Legacy."
I don't know where you had your Source Text. If it is in either
Master Source Text or Source Detail/Text tab - Legacy does not have a
three line limit.

Re pages and pages of sources in a report.

For a book report for relatives, I now use a database where only the
Master Source is set to print. This cuts the size dramatically. Those
who are interested in the Source Detail can get back to me for more
information. I've found most didn't even look at the Source pages
except to go WOW.

For myself, however, I like the sources to be as full as possible so
that everything is there when I want to see where information came from.

At 10:04 PM 2/10/2006, you wrote:

Identical source detail text might be easier to plan in a new Legacy file

Some researchers switched from few/no sources to a source for every
variation of every detail years ago and found that an all-descendants report
was too long to publish. Endnotes with detailed sources might take more
pages than the main report.

Source data entry results need to be checked DURING data entry and may
depend on long-term goals for a family book or web site. A common choice is
to print a "short" family book without sources and supply a database file
with sources to another researcher.

One non-Legacy GEDCOM repeated up to a dozen footnotes on the same page even
when the original program was used for the "book" report. It had lengthy
(non-standard) source text that was cut to (standard) three lines by Legacy.
My "solution" was to copy the source text to the marriage note for the
parents and delete the source (eg. cemetery transcription) repeated for
individuals. The only remaining problem would have been a transfer to PAF
which omits marriage notes in "book" reports. -- Elizabeth

It's quite simple. In any Windows PC there is a "PrtScr" key. If you press

that key (usually it is in the shift position, so Shift-PrtScr) this copies
you entire screen to the Windows clipboard.

Open any graphics program (I use Paint Shop Pro, but any would do) and paste

that into a new image. Crop it to show what you want, and you have a screen

image you can use to send, print, whatever).

Hope that helps.

Using Legacy for years now after trying many others first.
For me Legacy is number ONE in all aspects, easy of use; tremendously
good support;
very reasonably priced (or free in limited but not too limited

Jane,

Not sure I understand your question - Passage Express is
simply
_presentation_ software.  If you want to put together a
CD/DVD with
genealogical data (web pages, family group sheets,
descendant reports,
photos, etc.) then you will still need a genealogy program
(obviously
preferably Legacy!) to provide the data.

Re: [LegacyUG] Notes on Events

2006-10-02 Thread E.Rodier
Identical source detail text might be easier to plan in a new Legacy file
than a database started with a GEDCOM transfer or merging of files.

Re: [LegacyUG] Question about viewing sources

2006-10-02 Thread malkajef
It's quite simple. In any Windows PC there is a "PrtScr" key. If you press
that key (usually it is in the shift position, so Shift-PrtScr) this copies
you entire screen to the Windows clipboard.

Open any graphics program (I use Paint Shop Pro, but any would do) and paste
that into a new image. Crop it to show what you want, and you have a screen
image you can use to send, print, whatever).

Hope that helps.

Legacy version 6.0.0.110
Build date: 28 Aug 2006
This is an imported gedcom.

When the screen to edit an event is opened from the main family screen
there

is the resulting sentence created at the bottom (great feature!). Most of
the time there is what looks like a footnote mark (1) at the end of the
sentence indicating (I suspect, maybe erroneously) that a source is
attached

to this event entry.

However that is not always the case. As will be seen in the attached
image
(Legacy event.jpg), this "Education" event sentence has a superscript 1,
but

the sources icon is not lit up. Yet when I click on the sources icon to
check the sources, I do find sources linked to other events for this
person

but not for this source that has the superscript 1 (see assigned
sources.jpg, I've blanked out the names for privacy reasons).

Questions:
a) what does the superscript number mean?
b) if it means there is a source attached to it, how do I get to see it?
c) why is the sources icon dark even though I can find sources for this
person when I click on it?
d) Is there a report I can print out or a file dump that will show all the
sources present in Legacy's file AND the items they link to? (I can use
Access if that helps).

The main one I think is the new icons. They're the bit that you can't

Some find it difficult to see when they are coloured and when not.
Their visibility is changed somewhat by the colour you choose for the
background/panel. You will probably want to try various colour
combinations (Options > Customise - Colour Tab)

Legacy needs to be installed on both computers - yes it does write to
the registry. So you need to move the installation program from one
computer to the other and then install it on your 2000 computer. To
update, you'd need to download the full program again, transfer it to
the other computer and run it.

Yes Legacy 6 has been updated several times. Current version is build 110

Hope that helps,
Cathy

contrasts from one spot to another, as well as good differentiation
from type to background.

Second, do updates affect the Registry? Legacy 5 is on a computer
running 2000 with no internet access. My internet access is on
another computer running XP. I can transfer from one to another
using FileMover, but if the Registry is affected that changes the

I presume Legacy 6 has been updated several times already.

They have you create a GENCOM from your Legacy data file, and upload that.
Then you have to use their edit system, which isn't too bad, to make

You will have to try it to see if it fits your needs.

Re: [LegacyUG] Fam. Members by Generation

2006-10-02 Thread Susan Daily

Hi Jennie,
This has been very helpful to me. The tip posted online by Legacy did
not work for me. Just a few clarifications, since I just tried this
from scratch, and had to figure out a few things. Thank you! Susan

My comments/clarifications between >yours:

Select the individual you want to be at the top of the
tree. Then select Reports/All Reports/Descendants.

Actually you need to select Reports/Books-Other/Descendant Book Report.

On the left side of this window, select All for the
Generations window. On the right side of the window,
in the box titled Include Main Entries For, select All
individuals.

This is key - I skimmed that last sentence and wondered why I was only
getting some individuals numbered.

Also at this screen check the box for "Generate Table of Contents"

Create a Preview.

Scroll to the Table of Contents, noting the number of
generations found.

On a piece of paper or a spreadsheet, start a table of
the format:

Generation 1
Generation 2
Generation 3
etc.

Scroll into the text. Note that the first individual
is number 1, but the spouse isn't numbered. Start a
column 2 for the above table, filling in 1 for Gen 1.

Scroll down to where Generation 2 ends (i.e., where
the header Third Generation (Children) appears). Note
the number of the first child in Generation 3,
subtract one, and enter the value into the above
table.

Continue to scroll through the Preview, noting the
number of the first member minus one of each
generation. At the end, just take the number of the
last member. You'll end up with a table like this:

Generation 1 1
Generation 2 10
Generation 3 22
Generation 4 70
Generation 5166
Generation 6249
etc.

Now add a third column to the table by putting 1 for
Gen 1 in the third column

Subtract the column 2 entry for Gen 1 from its entry
for Gen 2 (10-1=9) and put it in the third column for
Gen 2, etc.

Now the table looks like this:

Generation 1 1 1
Generation 2 10 9
Generation 3 22 12
Generation 4 70 48
Generation 5166 96
Generation 6249 83
etc.

The third column above is the number of family members
by generation (direct descendants only, not spouses).

Have fun!

Jennie

Re: [LegacyUG] Error 2147024882

2006-10-02 Thread Leslie E. Buege
Gwen,
The problem with W98 is the memory that is used to keep track of running
applications like Legacy Family Tree.
Les

Jane,

Not sure I understand your question - Passage
Express is simply

_presentation_ software.  If you want
to put together a CD/DVD with

genealogical data (web pages, family group
sheets, descendant reports,

photos, etc.) then you will still need a
genealogy program (obviously

preferably Legacy!) to provide the
data.

RE: [LegacyUG] Question about viewing sources

A question for you: How did you take the screen images that you sent as an
attachment?

Legacy version 6.0.0.110
Build date: 28 Aug 2006
This is an imported gedcom.

When the screen to edit an event is opened from the main family screen there

is the resulting sentence created at the bottom (great feature!). Most of
the time there is what looks like a footnote mark (1) at the end of the
sentence indicating (I suspect, maybe erroneously) that a source is attached

to this event entry.

However that is not always the case. As will be seen in the attached image
(Legacy event.jpg), this "Education" event sentence has a superscript 1, but

the sources icon is not lit up. Yet when I click on the sources icon to
check the sources, I do find sources linked to other events for this person
but not for this source that has the superscript 1 (see assigned
sources.jpg, I've blanked out the names for privacy reasons).

Questions:
a) what does the superscript number mean?
b) if it means there is a source attached to it, how do I get to see it?
c) why is the sources icon dark even though I can find sources for this
person when I click on it?
d) Is there a report I can print out or a file dump that will show all the
sources present in Legacy's file AND the items they link to? (I can use
Access if that helps).

Jeff

I am with a team of Legacy users who are sharing, combining

Does Legacy offer space on the Internet where we can upload our database

possible to point Legacy's "OPEN FILE" to an Internet address of which
we could hold our database?

Another method maybe to install 'remote access' software.  Has
anyone tried 'remote access' software to enable their group to gain
access to a common PC?

If not, how else is it possible for a group to be able to combine

John,

the closest you can get to showing all open to-dos is to show those
with a Reminder Date in the next 365 days. To do this, at the Legacy
Home tab, select "Options" button (in top right of screen), and
choose "Options...".

Select the Reminder Options tab and either using the scroll arrows or
by typing, change the "Show to-do-reminders this many days in
advance:" to 365.

As far as I know, this will show all open reminders with due dates in
the next 365 days, and all those still open with reminder dates in the
past (from my limited test, it will show them even if it's from more
than a year ago).

Unfortunately, if you have no reminder date set they will not be shown
on the home page, so this may mean going in and setting reminder dates
on some of your to-do items, just to have them show here.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Dermot.

that option was available, that makes it even easier to spot living
children, and by extension, deceased children. You learn something

Ted and others,

Many thanks to all of you for your responses to my request. There's
plenty to go thorough there and it will keep me occupied just looking
at them all, both on the list and off-line.

I agree this is not off topic at all in my opinion and would share in your
interest in finding a new and good scanner that will work with Legacy, I
would like to find one that will do larger pictures as well.

RE: [LegacyUG] Internet Accessable LEgacy Database

2006-10-02 Thread ronald ferguson
Cameron, Legacy doesn't have any server space for users own use. I
co-operate with my brother-in-law with my website and he sends me his
back-up file each month: on receipt I merge the html from his data with mine
(Pedigree Files).

I haven't tried it but it is possible to use remote access to change data on
another PC if one has XP.

RE: [LegacyUG] Passage Express

2006-10-02 Thread ronald ferguson
There are not lots of problems with V 6. The Passage Express is not the full
version and is really only a taster and is useful if you wish to produce a
CD of a picture display. The only problem (other than ones in V 5) is
regarding the Relationship Calculator which seems to have a couple of other
spin offs. I believe this will be sorted in the next updates.

In my view it is well worthwhile up grading.

Thanks. I couldn't quite gather from Legacy or PE web pages if PE did
that.

Thank you for clearing that up.

Jane,

Not sure I understand your question - Passage Express is simply
_presentation_ software. If you want to put together a CD/DVD with
genealogical data (web pages, family group sheets, descendant reports,
photos, etc.) then you will still need a genealogy program (obviously
preferably Legacy!) to provide the data.

Hi again
I am still trying to resolve my issues with Legacy :)
I have now uninstalled - through Control panel etc
Re-installed into a completely new folder and upgraded to the latest build
I am still have runtime errors.
I also note that I cannot get pictures to show up in Publishing center, if
I view using screen/printer view
I do note however, that if I do a pdf or Html file I can view the
photos/info and then can print them.

I wonder if anyone else has this problem? It happens with all reports.
I also get back icons plaguing me too.
Thanks for your help
Gwen
