Jeff, if you can bear to screen read, just create PDFs.
But I agree that at the beginning you need to have
paper copies if only of sections of reports to view
the differences caused by different selections. I find
that printing just the Index of a Descendant Chart,
Book or Narrative is adequate now when checking
a report--it allows you to quickly move to the
onscreen page number without scrolling to find the
things you know you need to check.

You MUST use Report Setting files with descriptive
indicator names so you can swap back and forth
between trials, AND so you don't have remember
particular settings, AND so you don't have to retype
headings and titles and the like. See bottom right of
every report options window.

Thank you. That's very helpful indeed.
I guess I need to print versions of all the different reports to
really see
what the differences are, etc. Just seems like such a waste of a lot of
paper grin, but something I will need to do. I wonder if the printed
manual has examples (not just descriptions) of the different
reports (with
all options on) to compare them with each other.
Thank you. You have been very helpful.

Jeff, I think they both include everything, but I've generally
been using Descendant Narrative because I find people I
send it to can easily trace down their families, whereas
they get lost in the Book. The Narrative is also a lot shorter
and less repetitive than the Book.

I also usually send a Descendant Chart without boxes but
with generation lines which makes it easier for readers to
find their way around--then they can go back to the longer
 Narrative version.

[LegacyUG] Sigh...

2006-10-30 Thread Michele Lewis

Ok, I did as instructed and pulled up the marriage
list and lo and behold I see all of those "unknown" marriages. When I pull
them up I cant seem to simply delete the unknowns. It wants me to "add a
parent" or edit the unknown one. I could unlink but then I would have to
find that unlinked one and delete them.

Is this ghost thing some sort of bug they know
about and are working on?

I just did that process after reading the post about the ghost
marriages. I was very surprised to see that there were several in my
database. I clicked on the child to make him the focus on the
screen. Then I clicked unlink from parents. After I finished, I
looked again at the marriage list and all the ghost marriages were gone. I
was pleased!

Go to the Marr List
Find a double blank (husband and wife).
Select them.
Go to the child.
Unlink him or her from her blank parents.
This removes the ghost' MRIN.
Sorry I forgot to put this in last night.

Agree. The sources, address, pictures all are in the copied event,
saves tons of work. However, like Ron F I do this when entering the

You'd find it quicker to use the Event clipboard to copy and paste.
That way, the source is taken as well so you don't then need to
source the copied event. (You do put a source don't you :-))

Walt,
Not sure if this is exactly what you want but if you open
your Legacy database and click on the icon titled Marr List,
you will get a window that lists all MRIN's and the people
associated with them. Then at the bottom left hand corner is
a button marked Options. Click on that and one of the
options is Print. I didn't try this so like I said it may
not be what you are trying to do.

[LegacyUG] Sorting by date of birth

2006-10-30 Thread Art Sedddon

Hi;
Is there any way to tag a group in the name list, do a search of that tag
number and then sort by date of birth?

To me that would be much more useful than sorting by RIN, most of which, at
least in my file, are random numbers, since there is no way to assign them
automaticaly to follow a family group or any other logical system, except
manually, one by one.

RE: [LegacyUG] Sharing the Legacy database file

That works just fine!

I have just one copy that I keep on a desktop and access from three
different machines at different times. Just don't try to alter it on two
machines at the same time! Else you may get a problem. OK to use read
only, it is trying to update from two machines that upsets it.

Remember to back it up frequently - to your desktop. Then the main file and
the backup are in two different places

Has anyone had any experience in the following idea. I have a
wireless network in my home. Would there be any problems if I
shared my Legacy database on my so that I always am working with
one file. The shared folder would be on a laptop. Then if I take my
laptop to the library and made changes, when I open the file with my
desktop, I'm looking at the same file. No syncing or copying files
would be required. Thanks for your thoughts on this.

RE: [LegacyUG] Sharing the Legacy database file

2006-10-30 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I tried it ... I made a copy of the file on my
laptop, made a change there, and then made sure that
the folder the file was in was shared and allowed
others on my network to make changes to whatever
files were in that folder.

Then I came to my desktop and loaded the file on the
laptop, read the change I had made, and then
successfully made a change to my laptop file.

This is a great idea, and the only slow thing that I
found was that my laptop is wireless, so the
connection was a bit slow. And for anyone who does
this, be sure to BACK IT UP - BACK IT UP - BACK IT UP
- your data file. I would never skip the request to
back up your file that Legacy makes when you exit the
program. Also, if I do it, I shall make sure that my
laptop has a wired connection rather than a wireless
connection.

I would think it would work ... as long as only one
person was trying to access the file at a time.
And make sure the folders and files on your laptop
are properly shared for access from your desktop.

Re: [LegacyUG] File ID assistant and deleting duplicates

Thanks Cathy,
You are right; I do need to familiarize myself with this feature. That
was easy enough.

That's why it has both a Select button (to use the same File ID again)
and a Select + 1 button - so you enter the next available File ID number.

It's not so useful if you don't add a number.

If you've got into a mess, Print a File ID report so you can identify
the ones that don't match the File ID on the actual paper copy.

You can use the Edit button in the File ID Assistant to change them -
but check out the options carefully. I suspect this won't help in your
case, for, if I've understood you correctly, you've used the same File
ID name for a number of different papers. You'll need to use the
report to help you go back to each usage and change it to what you
actually want.

You might want to click the Help button on the File ID Assistant
screen to learn more.

Re: [LegacyUG] File ID assistant and deleting duplicates

2006-10-30 Thread Beth Gay

Hi Cathy,
I guess I am brain dead. The reply below was supposed to be to the
search information.

The file ID assistant is another story. When you use a name + number,
and reference the document location for more than one citation, does
this same name + number show up multiple times in the list and if so why?

I have tried alternate entries, such as Frederick Thompson, 1 Nancy
Coker; Frederick Thompson Nancy Coker; and Frederick Thompson Nancy
Coker, 1. The same file name repeats itself on the list for each
occasion that I reference it.

Is this the way it is designed?

Kindest regards,
Beth G.

RE: [LegacyUG] Sharing the Legacy database file

2006-10-30 Thread ronmdougherty

You will have no problems setting Legacy up in a Network enviroment and using it like a network application is suppose to be used. My family association has been doing this for years.

We have been trying to get it to work through the Internet, either through a P2P remote access or by hosting the database on the Internet for password protected access from anywhere. Has anyone tried this yet, or is anyone else trying this?

 Go to the Marr List
Find a double blank (husband and wife).
 Select them.
 Go to the child.
Unlink him or her from her blank parents.
 This removes the ghost' MRIN.
Sorry I forgot to put this in last night.
