The Sacraamento German Genealogy Society routinely accepts German documents for
translation. A charge is made depending upon the difficulty of reading and the
length of the document. Its mailing address is P.O. Box 600061, Sacramento, CA

Richard, this is way outside my ken, but putting "Translate Handschrift to

Dear LUGgies,

First, my apologies that this is not a Legacy-type question. Again, my
sincere apologies for breaking etiquette, but I'm at my wits end. Hope some
of you can give me some ideas.

My earliest known family members have their history (births, baptisms,
marriages, deaths, etc.) recorded in the Moravian Church registers (from
Nazareth, Pennsylvania).

I can access these registers at the Moravian Archives in Bethlehem,
Pennsylvania.

My problem: All the documents aren't just simply written in German. No-o-o,
my ancestors had to document their history in 18th century German
Handschrift!

If you've never seen "handschrift" (literally, hand writing) it looks like
the scratches left by a dozen roosters in combat!

Can someone make suggestions as to how I can get that nasty "handschrift"
transcribed and translated?

The Archives is reluctant to make suggestions, since they use these sources
to transcribe and translate many of their documents.

Thanks much for your suggestions!

[LegacyUG] Picture problem

2006-11-14 Thread Wedderburn

Hi

Does anyone know of a quick way to transfer the
pictures attached to the event sources to the event instead?  I have attached
all of my census images to the source instead of the event itself and know need
to have them attached to the event so I can send a gedcom file to someone
else.  When I send it the source pictures aren’t coming up.

The other person has genbox.  Even though I have
given them a cd with the images on and the program is pointed to the right
directory the images aren’t attached to the source, so the census pictures
aren’t showing.  It’s only if I attach the image to the event
itself that they show up.

Any suggestions on how to do this would be gratefully
received :-)

That seems rather complicated Carl. Why not just give the current no. 1 an
unused RIN and then change the RIN of the one you wish to No. 1? I am not
sure that this is what the OP was asking for though as I didn't fully grasp
the original question.

To ensure that s specific person in a file is number 1, create a new file
and add that person. Just a name is all you need, then number 1 is taken.
Import your data to that file, merge number 1 with whatever number that one
happens to be on the import, and he is then number 1.

Re: [LegacyUG] Set Direct Line as Preferred

2006-11-14 Thread Cathy

Hi Jean,
You don't need to go through a Gedcom unless you are wanting to leave
out Research notes or some other field - you can export direct to a
Legacy file.

Every family in Legacy has a preferred child whether they are part of
the Direct line set or not, whether you've chosen one to be the
preferred or not. The asterisk shows the Preferred child.

This means you can use the click next to the children on the Family
line to run down a number of different lines. Setting the Direct line
changes the preferred child to the one in the Direct line, if that
family is part of the Direct line. The last line set as Direct line
overrides others.

You can also set the Direct line to be Bold - See Options > Customise
- Data Format Tab

In addition you can set relationships and set the Colour Coding.
So many ways to indicate those most important. :-)

These won't all show unless your cousin has the same options set for
these things in Options > Customise.

Someone else replied how to get your cousin as RIN 1. Note RINs are
not allocated in any logical manner. They're a computer database
indexing number.

Cheers,
Cathy

At 02:51 PM 14/11/2006, you wrote:

I created a focus group of an ancestor and his descendants and
imported it into a new file. I renumbered the RIN's to start at
number 1. In the new file, my name appears as number 1, not the
starting ancestor I chose in the focus group. I don't think this
really matters, I just thought it odd.

My real problem is: In the new file, I set one of the descendants
of this ancestor as the preferred direct line under Tools and
customized to highlight the names in his direct line and include an
asterisk. Unfortunately, in addition to his direct line having the
asterisk and being highlighted, they still appear at my name and
with all of my direct line. (We only share two direct-line ancestors.)

I've tried setting him as preferred a few times and turning the
customization on and off. I've also exported and imported again
with him being the preferred direct line in the original file. It
hasn't fixed anything.

Any suggestions?

(What I'm trying to do is make a Legacy file for a cousin with just
his branch of the family. The only way I could figure how to do it
was by forming a focus group, exporting to a GEDCOM, and importing
the GEDCOM to a new file. Maybe someone knows a better way to
accomplish this.)

Thank you for your help.

Jean

RE: [LegacyUG] Transcribing software

2006-11-14 Thread David S Brookes
Have just had a look at this little programme. It's well worth a look for
anyone who needs to transcribe documents manually. The scanned document can
be viewed at the top with room to transcribe into a word processor at the
bottom. One could then copy the transcribed document and add it as the
text/ detail section of a source in Legacy. Best of all - it's free.

Thanks for the link Chris. I'm sure other readers will find it useful.

I just received a GEDCOM in which two families had siblings links with no

Hi, Dee
Thanks, but that wasn't it. The reference was for a little program
which split into two screens, one for the image and the other for
typing in the transcript. Easier than loading an image viewer and a
wordprocessor, and reducing each to half-screen size.
Cheers,

Pat:I sort of do the same, but for US Censuses I pull upthe page I want in Ancestry at the library, and thencopy and paste the series, reel, and image numbersfrom the View Record link to a Word file, and then go
home and use Heritage Quest to study or transcribe thepage.  Those numbers are at the bottom of the list offield data, and usually in italics.I have found that the Image Number for the 1880 and
1930 censuses in Ancestry aren't the same as inHeritage Quest.  Those are the two years that HeritageQuest's name index isn't complete, too!So for those years I view the Ancestry image, in ornear the upper right corner.  There you will find a
stamped number, obviously not part of the printedform.  That's the image number that Heritage Questfiles that image under. If the line numbers on the image you want aren't 1 to50 there is no stamped number.  So I select the Page A
tab (I think that that's the tab name) and look at theimage with lines 1 to 50 for the stamped number.Hope that this is clear . . .Happy searching!By the way, as long as I have been dong Ancestry at
the library (probably two+ years) the Library Editionsays that Ancestry's contract with whoever the librarycontracts with specifically limits Ancestry's use toinside the library.Jennie

they
actually moved our sever to their new data center but I didn't get one and

it was to late to tell everyone what was going on. Our sever company is
really
growing. They moved to a brand new building which is adding enough room
that
they can add over 1000 new severs. I am glad they are doing well and I hope
the
new data center will keep our bandwidth fast. The move was supposed to go
a
lot better than it did. I think almost everything is now working.

You do not say from where you are creating the webpages. If it is from
Internet>Create Web Pages
then you need to go to the "What" tab and in the Events box check include
pictures. Also under the "Other" tab in the Picture/Sounds box check include
pictures and whatever else is approriate.

Well, I've given up trying to use the publishing centre, and now do
everything through rtfs, where one can edit everything to one's heart's
content.

That's why getting the macros to run for the pictures - reported extensively
elsewhere - was so important. I also like to remove the "Joe Bloggs married"
or "Joe Bloggs married unknown" sentences that Legacy inserts without
evidence whenever a child is listed to a father without its mother being
known.

I use www.lulu.com as my publisher - a print on demand service that means
you don't have to put money up front. It can't take Legacy pdfs as they
don't include embedded fonts.

So given that some might have fonts they prefer to the standard arial/times
they would need to embed them - one needs to create pdfs to send for
printing. I do that from the Legacy rtfs, and use

http://moorstation.org/typoasis/designers/steffmann/index.htm

as a source of superb free old style typefaces. Try Caslon Antique for old
documents!

If anyone wants help with publishing, do write to me off-list

A small point but important.

I'm sure that when you said 'microfilmed' you meant archived; I say
that because thank goodness we have now moved into the days of hi-res
scans rather than microfilm. The Scottish archive centre has just got
a book scanner, and sent me recently a copy of an ancestor's will from
1819 - full color, A3, and a resolution to die for!

This is the sort of kit I am talking about:-
