Re: [LegacyUG] Installing second copy of Legacy
That's great, thanks Cathy! :-) Wendy Cathy said the following on 7/01/2007 8:07 p.m.: Hi Wendy, Yes you can run two copies. Some beta testers run even more - though usually different versions or builds - and I suspect Legacy Support staff have more installed. If you rename the Install program LegacyNew.exe (I understand that case is important in the name) it will ask you where you want to install it rather than overwrite your current installation. You can have two copies open at the same time. If you open the same database in the second copy, you'll get a warning re problems if you enter data. It's probably best to run a different database in the second program. Cheers, Cathy At 10:17 AM 7/01/2007, you wrote: Is it possible to have two copies of Legacy v6 installed on your computer at the same time? I don't mean to run at the same time. What I want to do is have a second copy in a separate directory that is running the Standard edition, rather than the Deluxe that I already run. I'm wanting to suggest to someone that Legacy might be a suitable tool for something she wants to do, but am finding it difficult to tell just what is a Standard feature, and what is Deluxe. It would be useful to have this second copy to look at, so I can see clearly what can be done in Standard. I've downloaded a fresh copy of the setup file to my laptop computer, and it's now residing on the Desktop. However, when I double-click on it, the program is automatically installed where I've already got Legacy and doesn't give me an opportunity to direct it elsewhere. Any suggestions? Or is what I want to do not possible? Looking forward to hearing from you. :-) Kind Regards, Wendy Howard Have you unlocked the real power of Legacy? [LegacyUG] Is there an easy way to change the source name
Hi Everybody, thank you for your wonderful help on organizing files and sourcing and the use of file Ids. In reorganising my files, I have decided that I need to change some of the name sources for some people but do not want to change the source detail. 1. Search and replace does not work as it changes every one linked to that source and that is not what I want to do. 2. If you go to master source list, and change it everyone linked changes but this is not what I want. The only way I can see is to go to master source list show listtag all then go to find and find all that have the tag and using the name list edit each person. As there is a number of these people this way is very slow. Does anyone have any ideas to make this process quicker. regards Anne Have you unlocked the real power of Legacy? RE: [LegacyUG] Picture Center Updates to Individual Records--and Source Detail
WHAT!!?? I was afraid this was the answer. As wonderful as this program is for the collection-storage-retrieval of genealogy data (and it truly is), we have some ways to go to be fully useful for source record management---the full other half of the genealogy equation as Geoff will attest to. I wrestle with these issues being over-the-edge for a program designed to keep names, dates, and places in one sock. Maybe it's too much to expect of one program. But Legacy is nearly there--it is SOOO close--with just a few modifications it would be the total package. Shaky gap-filling programs like Clooz would be yesterday's news. Or, worse, using data base programs like Access or OO Base to mess with data structure wouldn't be necessary. PLEASE, along with GLOBAL CHANGE OPTION FOR PICTURE CENTER and ALPHABETIZED FILE-ID REPORT, please add PICTURE CENTER TO LINK PICTURES TO SOURCE DETAIL to your writing campaign (Suggest A New Feature).Lots of voices will be heard. These three features will move Legacy to the next level in your genealogy record management world. If you have any questions on how much these features would improve your genealogy record collection or would like a method of phrasing any of these for Suggest A New Feature, please email me off LUG. Sorry Bob. Wish I could agree with you. There are times it is appropriate to have many voices to be heard. Fact of the matter is suggesting a new Legacy feature is no different than anything else. Far more emphasis will be placed on an issue if many are interested than if only one. It's common sense, it's life. Attend a city council meeting sometime and see what I mean. RE: [LegacyUG] Picture Center Updates to Individual Records--and Source Detail
My guess is that this group's membership comprises only a very small proportion of the number of users of Legacy and in my view it would be extremely presumptious to make the assumption that even if a significant number of group members submitted such a request it would be statistically significant. It is quite likely that for some nations translation into their own language would have a much higher priority and I can think of other illustrations of priorities - not forgetting my continual gripe about the bugs in the pedigree web page program. I agree completely that spamming is not the way ahead - it merely wastes time that can be better spent. The debate has taken place, the suggestion has been made and no doubt the powers that be are aware of it. In my family also there are several events, including one for cremation and another for burial and/or scattering of the ashes. Cremation is not an either/or for burial, it's an intervening event. I use the Burial on the main screen for the place where whatever is left rests, in many cases the Location is ,,At Sea. I then add a Cremation Event for the facts of the Cremation, and a Burial Info event and/or Remains Scattered Event if there are notes/pictures that I want in reports. RE: [LegacyUG] Picture Center Updates to Individual Records--and Source Detail
I'm not about to start debating the merits of public opinion and ways to address issues. Suffice to say, there are issues that affect a few, that affect segments, that affect all. These are issues affecting ALL Legacy users, not a few or segments. Whether you speak Chinese or Punjabi, have 1 same-sex partnership to deal with or 10. I'm sorry these issues aren't getting addressed by the Legacy staffers as quickly as those segments would like. These are global issues affecting everyone, they need fixing. The way to make the point of the impact these issues have on proper documentation is to weigh in with your vote. Not sitting on your hands. So this list doesn't make up the majority of Legacy users. I'd wager to say this group is among the most engaged and aware. Proportionately, their numbers speak volumes. A valuable resource for the Legacy staffers. RE: [LegacyUG] Picture Center Updates to Individual Records--and Source Detail
Hi everyone, Interesting discussion here but mainly agree with Gary. (Many apologies, Ron.) As the 'suggest a feature' is available to everyone it may or may not be statistically significant (we don't know this), but if the option is there I would use it if I feel inclined to do so, in the same way as others have the option of using it if they find they would like a feature added? I don't thing it I would call it spamming - I always understood spamming as 'sending unsolicited commercial messages to many recipients', but I stand to be corrected by those with more knowledge about the subject than I. We are individuals sending individual e-mails after being given the option of doing this by Legacy. I guess Ron is probably right about the statistically significant bit, but it wouldn't stop me having my say. Although I see a need for a change in the programme, I usually get around it, by organizing sources in a different way. I'm sure someone will see problems with this, but I tend to use lots of sources and use the source details for minor adjustments or comments. For example, I do not have just one source for the 1881 England Census, but one source for each 'place of residence'. I attach the source to each individual person who lived in this place, adding comments or 'appropriate extracts of the master source' to the Detail Source. Therefore, if I add a picture of the place of residence and a copy of the original census form, it is easier as once you have attached the picture to the Master source, adding the source to the individual being much easier than lots of separate pictures. This is the only way I know of adding pictures to sources, and to attach them to individuals rather than individually. This is why I use many master sources. This doesn't help those who have a large data file already set up in a different way. If you add an individual photo which is 'just a photo' and not really part of a source as such, but needs to be shared amongst a number of people, I tend to do it via the picture centre, by finding the picture on the computer by using 'browse', then adding all the details to the 'Picture List' on the right hand 'third of the page'. It is then an easy process to add the same picture and comments to each individual, by placing them in the individual, Birth, Christening, Death, Buried, sections. If you have events you can add the to events in the same way. If you do this the written details you have added to the 'Picture List', is then attached with the picture. I suspect most know all this, but just thought I'd write it on the off chance, there is someone who doesn't. Sorry, this e-mail is a little rushed and apologies once more to Ron, who I feel has more knowledge about the Legacy programme than I'll ever have. RE: [LegacyUG] Picture Center Updates to Individual Records--and Source Detail
But, some of my suggestions were added with only my request, and a 'cheering' section at the time. There are two things that I suspect influence the inclusion of changes. 1. will it enhance the program, and 2. is the program coding do-able in the present environment. To my best memory, ALL of my suggestions have made it eventually. ALL programmers must use a triage method of prioritizing tasks. At least they listen, send a message to Microsoft and get a calender to track the answer back. Rich --- Olds-Wills-Anderson-Simonson Hodges-Harris-Liikala-Jukkara [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Sorry Bob. Re: [LegacyUG] Source Template
Mary, I believe that you don't need to set up a bogus individual to get this to work. All you have to do is set up the Source like you want it to look and then attach the source to an individual in your database. Then when you get a new census and want to create a new Master source for your new census, all you need to do is go to your master source list and click on the source that is set up the way you want and then click Edit. Then, the first thing to do is change the name of the master source to the new census, then change what ever other fields are appropriate for that census, then when you click on Save it will ask you if you want to apply changes to the current source or create a new source with the changes, of course pick the new source option. Thats all you need to do, It works great!! I do this all the time, and am doing it now to reorginiaze my sources. Russ - Original Message - From: M. David, No problem with you not agreeing with me, we all have our opinions. I only put my fourpennyworth in because of what seemed to be an attempt at organising a mass lobby. I'm sure someone will see problems with this, but I tend to use lots of sources and use the source details for minor adjustments or comments. Re: [LegacyUG] Is there an easy way to change the source name
Take the one you are changing. Make sure it is attached to someone else (person 2). using person 1, edit the source to a new 'spelling/naming'. If you have 200 people, wanting to move 100 for source 1, 100 for source2, just choose show list, tag all, then search on tag, and look at each individually to keep 1 or delete 1 and add 2. And you don't want the computer to try to guess 1 or 2. Takes a while, but consider retyping everything and it looks like less work after all. Rich --- The Eccles Family [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Everybody, thank you for your wonderful help on organizing files and sourcing and the use of file Ids.
Hi Ron, I Agree entirely with this (Phew!) I think the 'mass-lobby' was perhaps an 'off-the-cuff' remark, so to speak - speaking as someone who is guilty saying things and in the end wishing I had kept quiet. (I don't have my original e-mail's to check). Not to worry. Have a good week. I only put my fourpennyworth in because of what seemed to be an attempt at organising a mass lobby. RE: [LegacyUG] Source Template
Thanks, Russ. That's what I do now. I was a tad confused about why you would want to add the template to an unlinked individual. The template doesn't really have to be a template at all. As you said, just use an existing source that's already attached to a person, make changes and save it as a new source. All I saw were additional comments about using master sources and how to find standards for the citation of such master sources. RE: [LegacyUG] 2 versions of Legacy
Having first decided which file to use as the base file, generally one would use FileImport FromLegacy File to import the other into that file. Ensure that you renumber the RINs from a number higher than the highest RIN in you base file (there is an option for this). You will then need to merge the duplicates by selecting the details of the latest (or the one you prefer). When completed delete the entries you do not require from. I recommend that before starting you carefully read the Help Files on Merging. Re: [LegacyUG] 2 versions of Legacy
First, find them both. 2. Print the name list in both, separately. 3. Compare to see how much is corrupt/confused. 4. how big are they under 100, 1000, 1, 10. If you need to merge both to one, send to me offline or look at my stuff in the archives. Rich send me both totals. --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I have been having trougle writing my book using Charting Companion. [LegacyUG] Capitolization and in-line auto complete
Anyone notice this; when in Family View and adding someone, anyone, son, daughter, another wife, anyone, when you put in a fore name and tab to another field it will automatically capitolize that fore name but when you add a middle name also, it will leave the first name in lower case if that is how it was typed. and when typing a location, the auto complete feature doesn't always work, you have to add a letter or two before it will pick up again. Items 151 and 152 on today's fix-it list. LOL Gene Have you unlocked the real power of Legacy? Legacy 6.0 Deluxe has 92 features not found in the Standard Edition. Re: [LegacyUG] Capitolization and in-line auto complete
Hi Gene, I can't reproduce either of these. I normally have Options Customise - Data Format Tab Letter Case of Given Names and Locations set to Don't change what I enter rather than set to Initial caps However I changed it to try. I entered two given names all lower case and tabbing they both switched to Initial caps. Works for three given names as well. I've not seen the location behaviour you speak of - have you checked what is in your Master Location list for locations beginning with the letters you entered before it stuttered? Perhaps you have an incomplete location entered? Re: [LegacyUG] Capitolization and in-line auto complete
Thanx Cathy, I re-applied the check mark and will see what happens. as for the stuttering locations, this has done this forever, since version 5 and before. I have been completely through my locations list adding counties to every location for a more complete look and feel, and found nothing amiss. Guess it's something I'll just have to live with.
