Richard, thanks for the reply. I undid the merge and supposedly
restored my file to the status prior to the merge. The
marriage/spouse dups are still there. Therefore, the dup issue
must have been created upon the importing of my wife's file into
mine, which results in duplication of everyone in the file. But I
would think that then merging and searching for duplicates should
undo any duplicate marriage links created by the import. I don't
see any options or settings that relate to duplicate marriages
 during merging.

I have attached a screen shot of the first manual merge person (out
of 314) that comes up when I use IntelliShare. These 314 were
found by the program to have differences between my file and my
wife's file. You can see that the left side of the screen shows
duplicate spouses (my file) and the right side shows the correct
single spouse (my wife's file). The reason this person requires
manual merging is because I made some corrections to the Birth and
Residence location fields--the differences between the two files
has nothing to do with duplicate spouses.

Since I did my cleanup from the gedcom transfer in MY file, it has
the most correct information regarding place and event names. So I
want to be sure to keep those when I merge. However, I don't want
to keep the duplicate spouses that are showing on the left (my
 file) side of the screen.

What do I need to do to throw out the duplicate spouses created
by the import of my wife's Legacy file, but at the same time keep
 my file maintenance changes?
And why isn't this done automatically?
I'm still not sure if there is something I am doing wrong or if
this is a problem with the IntelliShare feature.

 Thank you!
 Dennis

Re: [LegacyUG] Readily visible Link Proof

2007-02-11 Thread Debbie Blanton McCoy

Dave,

If you attach a source to the Father (Rel) and Mother (Rel), is there
any way to make this source information show up in reports, or would
one have to create an actual event, such as a Relationship event? If
one uses the Father (Rel) and Mother (Rel), it would be nice if the
sources attached to these would show up as sources for the Father and
Mother in a FGS.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding your needs . . . but with one click you
can open the Assigned Sources window, and if you uncheck Show all
Events the source/proof of the link to the father (Father Rel.) and
the one for the link to the mother (Mother Rel.) will be visible if
you have the source/proof recorded there -- if you have them sourced
and they're not visible then simply make the window longer. If they
don't show unless you check Show all Events then you don't have the
proof sourced in Legacy.

BTW, you *are* showing your source/proof in that (correct) place,
right?

Toxanne,

No there isn't. But I wouldn't bother because (a) you would loose definition
by doing so as neither the gif nor the jpg are lossless and (b) if the
definition is poor it will not improve it. It can be done using a variety of
software of which Irfan View is just one.

Re: [LegacyUG] Readily visible Link Proof

2007-02-11 Thread Susan Daily

John,
Before you start, ask yourself this question: Do most of the people in
your database have proved links to their parents? If so, then the ones
you want to mark visibly would be the ones that have yet to be proven.
So whatever recommendations you get, I would suggest you try to do it
with the smaller pool of names.

Some people might suggest that you not link the names of people you
haven't proved descent for. Not sure how workable that is for you. If
it is simply a condition that you just haven't located true sources
for the people yet, but feel they are real children, then I understand
more of what you are looking for. The asterisk mentioned previously
might help there (maybe put it in the Title Pre. box where it could
be easily added or deleted, and quickly viewed).

Richard, thanks for the reply. I "undid" the merge and supposedly
restored my file to the status prior to the merge. The
marriage/spouse dups are still there.

What do I need to do to "throw out" the duplicate spouses created
by the import of my wife's Legacy file, but at the same time keep
my file maintenance changes?
And why isn't this done automatically?
I'm still not sure if there is something I am doing wrong or if
this is a problem with the IntelliShare feature.

Thank you!
Dennis

RE: [LegacyUG] Printing a Book

2007-02-11 Thread Byron Schafbuch

Hello June

Maybe this will help with what you are looking for:

On the toolbar select reportspublishing center -
First, highlight any previous selection on the right side and remove -
On the left side select individual report then add -
Click on change person in current chapter -
This will bring you to the 'Select a Report' menu with the 'Individual
Report' tab
selected, on the bottom, click on the Record Selection button -
On the Report Record Selection menu, click on the button for All
Individuals in the entire family file -
Close the 'Report Record' menu -
Close the 'Select Report' menu -
Now back at the publishing center, you can also use the Edit setting for
Current Chapter to select options for report formatting -

You can now 'Preview' your report, or print, or generate to file, your
preference.

NOTE: The 'Individual Report' is a 1-page-to-1-person report. i.e. 500+
people means 500+ pages to print.

Also CAUTION: have noticed that Legacy has a definite problem being able to
handle/preview/print/generate LARGE reports. At what level I am not sure,
but legacy 'hangs' generating large reports. I have 2 databases I maintain,
one w/300+, and another w/ 13000+. The small one generates whatever I need,
whenever, however, the LARGE one of 13k+, almost always cause Legacy to hang
making LARGE report, even for preview or to make a file.

Hope this helps

Does anyone know if it is possible to print a book that
includes everyone who is in my data base. I have looked at
the reports menu and can't see a report but I may just not be
 understanding what I am reading.

 Thank you

[LegacyUG] Fixing Imported Sources

2007-02-11 Thread Pat Jones
I just imported a GEDCOM of my family tree from FTM. My sources
look very different from how Legacy loads them. I'd like to
clean them all and have them entered as Legacy does it (per the
instructional CDs) and eliminate the FTM entries. Is there any
way to do this - this is a big database, about 15,000
individuals?

I am in the process of moving my multimedia files to my laptop from my old

Re: [LegacyUG] Moving photos to laptop

2007-02-11 Thread R G Strong Genealogy

Anne,
The zip file will normally contain the path to the pictures starting at the
Root which is usually the C:/ directory. So by using the extraction wizard
and extracting it to the C:/ the pictures will end up in the same directory
structure that was on the old computer (ie c:/legacy/pictures/ or where ever
you had the original pics located)

Hope this helps.

Re: [LegacyUG] Fixing Imported Sources

2007-02-11 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
Remove the gedcom from your HOME file. Create a new
file (Temp) with the Gedcom. Fix the Temp at whatever
pace you have. For that size it might take a few
months. It took me a year (snails pace) to fix 3000
new people. Don't rush. When Temp is clean, then
merging should take a few hours (much thinking) at
least. Get it right the first time. I have had 3
gedcoms waiting for fixing at the same time. Don't
rush.

Re: [LegacyUG] I've married my wife--twice!

2007-02-11 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
Find a couple with two identical marriages. Unlink the
'dup' if obvious. The higher MRIN is probably the
culprit. I had this. When you unlink it saves all the
other sruff. Deleteing ERASES stuff.
Sort the marriage list by Surname. the multiples
should show up near the matches. Check that children
are not in the unlink before executing the unlink. Not
a great answer but easier than fixing what was ndone
in the past.

Richard, thanks for the reply. I undid the merge
and supposedlyrestored my file to the status prior to
the merge. The marriage/spousedups are still there.
Therefore, the dup issue must have been createdupon
the importing of my wife's file into mine, which
results induplication of everyone in the file. But I
would think that thenmerging and searching for
duplicates should undo any duplicate marriagelinks
created by the import. I don't see any options or
settings thatrelate to duplicate marriages during
merging.

I have attached a screen shot of the first manual
merge person (out of314) that comes up when I use
IntelliShare. These 314 were found bythe program to
have differences between my file and my wife's file.
You can see that the left side of the screen shows
duplicate spouses(my file) and the right side shows
the correct single spouse (my wife'sfile). The reason
this person requires manual merging is because Imade
some corrections to the Birth and Residence location
fields--thedifferences between the two files has
nothing to do with duplicatespouses.

Since I did my cleanup from the gedcom transfer in MY
file, it has themost correct information regarding
place and event names. So I want tobe sure to keep
those when I merge. However, I don't want to keep
theduplicate spouses that are showing on the left (my
file) side of thescreen.

What do I need to do to throw out the duplicate
spouses created bythe import of my wife's Legacy file,
but at the same time keep my filemaintenance changes?
And why isn't this done automatically?
I'm still not sure if there is something I am doing
wrong or if this isa problem with the IntelliShare
feature.

Thank you!

have clean files of all thevarious parts, you should
fix each one separately, then merge them, and check for

Toxanne,

No there isn't. But I wouldn't bother because (a) you would loose
definition by doing so as neither the gif nor the jpg are lossless and (b)
if the definition is poor it will not improve it. It can be done using a
variety of software of which Irfan View is just one.

Re: [LegacyUG] photos question

2007-02-11 Thread Heather Stovold

Well, your daughter is correct. Legacy stores the path (the location of
the folder on the computer) where each picture is.

You will probably need to do a Backup Multimedia Files - then restore the
multimedia files on your daughters computer. I'm not sure if the Gedcom
transfers the links or not

Hope this helps some!

Re: [LegacyUG] photos question

2007-02-11 Thread Susan Daily

Marilyn,
In addition to what Heather stated, I would like to note that if your
daughter has Legacy installed on her computer, you could even just
bring her your Legacy family backup file and multimedia backup file,
then do a Restore on your daughter's computer, and it should make it
look like your computer.

A few possible hiccups: Her Legacy folder is installed somewhere
different than your computer stores it, so the pictures may not be
found immediately. You can have Legacy look for the correct (new)
photo locations.

More help can be provided, as you follow these steps. Just ask!

[LegacyUG] Highly Recommend the Training Videos

2007-02-11 Thread Krones2004
I purchased the Legacy 6.0 version with manual and training videos a couple of
months ago. First I read the whole manual. Then I went through the Training
Video that came with the Legacy 6.0 Set up and program.

Today I started on the Training Videos - and wish I had done them right away
when I first put Legacy on my computer.

I just fnished the first of the four videos: 12-Step Checklist to Using
Legacy Family Tree. Those 12 steps answered a lot of questions that I have
seen brought up in the User Group. Now I am going to go back through each step
and follow it on my Legacy program.

Then I will do the same with the other three training videos. I am so glad I
purchased them. Just wish I had used them to begin with. Would not have so much
cleaning up to do now. But, as usual, I was so eager to get my family in I
neglected the learning part. Oh well, I guess that is part of the learning
process also.

So I would highly recommend that anyone planning on using Legacy (or already
have the program) to also purchase those four training videos.

  Peggy, Tacoma, Washington
Honest guys - this is an unsolicited plug from me to you for the training
videos.

Re: [LegacyUG] Readily visible Link Proof

2007-02-11 Thread Cathy

Hi Debbie,
So long as you've chosen to include Child-Parent Relationships in the
Report Options, the Sources for the Rel to Mother and Rel to Father
show on a Family Group Sheet.
For people where there are only sources for these, after the parent
you'll find (Relationship xx, xx) where xx represents the source number.

I think I may have found a bug as they still show when you choose to
not include Child-Parent Relationships. However, they don't show if
you have never chosen to include Child-Parent Relationships.

sources attached to these would show up as sources for the Father and
Mother in a FGS.

Re: [LegacyUG] I've married my wife--twice!

2007-02-11 Thread Dennis Davenport
Thanks for the help Richard. I basically did what you suggested and
things seem to be okay now. I did find that in some instances, even for
the duplicate spouse, there were children attached and I had to unlink
those children, too. I did this as long as there were also the same
children showing under the non-duplicate spouse. Those stayed intact
even when I unlinked the duplicate spouses and their children.

I appreciate your willingness to help with this somewhat complex issue.

Richard, thanks for the reply. I undid the merge

Therefore, the dup issue must have been createdupon

the importing of my wife's file into mine, which
results induplication of everyone in the file. But I
would think that thenmerging and searching for
duplicates should undo any duplicate marriagelinks
created by the import. I don't see any options or
settings thatrelate to duplicate marriages during
merging.

I have attached a screen shot of the first manual
merge person (out of314) that comes up when I use
IntelliShare. These 314 were found bythe program to
have differences between my file and my wife's file.
You can see that the left side of the screen shows
duplicate spouses(my file) and the right side shows
the correct single spouse (my wife'sfile). The reason
this person requires manual merging is because Imade
some corrections to the Birth and Residence location
fields--thedifferences between the two files has
nothing to do with duplicatespouses.

Since I did my cleanup from the gedcom transfer in MY
file, it has themost correct information regarding
place and event names. So I want tobe sure to keep
those when I merge. However, I don't want to keep
theduplicate spouses that are showing on the left (my
file) side of thescreen.

What do I need to do to throw out the duplicate
spouses created bythe import of my wife's Legacy file,
but at the same time keep my filemaintenance changes?
And why isn't this done automatically?
I'm still not sure if there is something I am doing
wrong or if this isa problem with the IntelliShare
feature.

Thank you!

Re: [LegacyUG] photos question

2007-02-11 Thread Krones2004
Marilyn:

I'm an oldey also. But you are right. Legacy creates a shortcut to the
photos and documents that are stored on the computer.

What I do is to create a file on my desktop called Family Photos and keep
my photos in there. I organize the photos by folders - usually a folder for
each surname. I also have another folder called Family Documents where I keep
the scanned documents I use for backup sources.

Then, when I want to either give a copy to someone else or to backup onto a
CD, I do the following. First I copy the Legacy Data file (which holds my
family tree) to the disc. Then I copy the Family Photos folder and the
Family Documents folder from the desktop to the CD.

Thus, when the person gets the CD, they can copy the Data to their Legacy
file and the Family Photos and the Family Documents to their desktop. That
way, the photos and documents are in the same spot they are in for the data
file shortcuts.

Also, if your daughter is using Legacy, you don't need to use Gedcom. Just
make a copy of the family file on the CD and she can enter it into her Legacy
program. Just make sure your file and hers do not have the same file names. You
don't want to mix and match them until everything has been checked.

  Hope this helps.

2007-02-11 Thread ronald ferguson

Marilyn,

Heather and Susan have given you some leads and I would not wish to
complicate matters but you do not say if your photos used in Legacy are in a
separate folder or scattered over various folders - if the latter you could
have problems and you would be better putting them in one folder (say
Legacy_pics). I am not sure but if the folder(s) is in My Documents they may
still not show up on your daughter's PC as the full path includes the user
name (unless, of course, your daughter has used the same user name as
yourself).

The advantage of having them in the same folder is that when you put them on
your daughter's PC you will only have to find the one folder. BTW if you
store the folder in C\Legacy then the path would normally be the same in
both and no search would be necessary. If you do move your photos do not
forget to back-up your multimedia files so they contain the new location.

[LegacyUG] Master Marriage Status List

2007-02-11 Thread Dennis Davenport

Hi,

I was viewing the Marriage Status list which currently has 7 items in
it, one of which is Married. When I highlight the Married status from
the list and click Show List, I get No records were found that use this
marriage status.

Now, I _know_ I have married people in my file since when I run the
Marriage List report, it contains 1243 families. Marriages also seem to
appear correctly in reports and in the descendant and pedigree views.

1. Why isn't the Married status linked to any of my marriage entries?
2. What are the consequences if they aren't linked?
3. What do I gain by linking the status Married to my marriages? (this
is probably another way of asking #2)

4. How can I fix this so they are linked?

It's interesting to note that other marriage status items like Divorce
and Annulled do have linkages to people in my file as expected. It's
just odd that the most common status is not linked at all.

I also checked Legacy program help and it explains how to add, delete
and change statuses, but doesn't really say what the purpose of theses
statuses are and why they are needed. So far I'm thinking they are used
only for statistical purposes.

Thanks for any assistance!

Dennis

3. nothing
4. Type it in

You can include divorced, Separated etc in reports should you so wish.
Personally I don't bother. Especially as some on my tree might not be
too keen on seeing that their grandfather was a bigamist :)

Subject: [LegacyUG] Master Marriage Status List
Date: Sun, 11 Feb 2007 17:21:23 -0800

Hi,

I was viewing the Marriage Status list which currently has 7 items in
it, one of which is Married. When I highlight the Married status
from the list and click Show List, I get No records were found that
use this marriage status.

Now, I _know_ I have married people in my file since when I run the
Marriage List report, it contains 1243 families. Marriages also seem
to appear correctly in reports and in the descendant and pedigree views.

1. Why isn't the Married status linked to any of my marriage entries?
2. What are the consequences if they aren't linked?
3. What do I gain by linking the status Married to my marriages?
(this is probably another way of asking #2)

4. How can I fix this so they are linked?

It's interesting to note that other marriage status items like
Divorce and Annulled do have linkages to people in my file as
expected. It's just odd that the most common status is not linked at
all.

I also checked Legacy program help and it explains how to add, delete
and change statuses, but doesn't really say what the purpose of
theses statuses are and why they are needed. So far I'm thinking they
are used only for statistical purposes.

Thanks for any assistance!

Dennis

RE: [LegacyUG] photos question

2007-02-11 Thread leo macdonald
Hi Marilyn, if you are just trying to do up a Descendant report or Ancestor
report and want to include the pictures in the report so they will show up
in your daughter in law's computer then all you have to do is: go to reports
and pick out the report you want to send or give her - go to the report
options - go to Pictures tab - where it says - embed the pictures in the
file, click the box. Now under the picture of the printer you will see the
following 5 options - Screen/Printer, Text file, HTML file, Rich Text file,
PDF file, click the Rich Text file, click create, name the file then burn
the file to a disk or put it on a USB drive, it will probably be too large
to e-mail. Leo

I have a really dumb question, as I am older and not nearly as computer
knowledgeable as the rest of the group. I have some photos in legacy that
i have been adding to individules, when i made a gedcom and took it to my
daughter in laws computer and she loaded it into her legacy as a seperate
file, their were not any picutures in it. She seemed to think the photos
are only linked and that legacy gets them from the persons computer hard
drive so they only show on your own computer. She is a new user for legacy
and not very good with computers either. Any kind of really SIMPLE
explanations would be great thanks

Toxanne,

No there isn't. But I wouldn't bother because (a) you would loose
definition by doing so as neither the gif nor the jpg are lossless and (b)
if the definition is poor it will not improve it. It can be done using a
variety of software of which Irfan View is just one.

[LegacyUG] Sourcing documents and info found on Internet sites and forums

2007-02-11 Thread Dennis Davenport
I was wondering if folks wouldn't mind sharing their method(s) of
sourcing items they have found on Internet sites, forums, etc., such as
Ancestry.com or a Rootsweb,co, forum posting. I realize that
information retrieved from the Internet should always be verified.

For instance, say I found a forum posting on the Genealogy.com forum
from a trusted source giving me the birth, marriage, and death dates of
an ancestor I was researching. I would likely want to enter this into
my file with a fairly low surety until I was able to verify the dates
from vital records, etc.

But in the mean time when I add a source for this I was thinking of
setting it up like this:

Source List Name: Genealogy.com Forum query
Author: Person who authored the posting
Title: Genealogy.com Forum
Type: Online Forum
Publication Facts: URL and Surname title of the specific forum where
the post was made such as Allan/Allen Family Berwick, Scotland

Details of Source Citation: Message 806 of 921 and date of posting
Detail Text: text of the posting

Does anyone see any flaws in this methodology? Can you suggest what you
feel would be a better way to source this in Legacy?

How about ways to source an email?

If this has all been covered before, please direct me to the archives.
Thanks for any input.

Re: [LegacyUG] I've married my wife--twice!

2007-02-11 Thread Cathy

Hi Dennis,

Before importing any file, you are encouraged to do a backup.

Did you? If so, restore your backup and check whether the double
marriages were in the file before you imported your wife's file.

From the screenshot you sent (which you shouldn't have) it looks as
if that is the case as the RINs are the same. The RINs for the
imported file should all be higher (and it's a good idea to make them
deliberately higher by 10,000 or more so you can see at a glance when
merging who comes from where - if you start with say 30,001 then the
end of the number is identical to the original RIN).

If they're not in your file before you imported your wife's file,
then it appears you've uncovered a bug in the Intellishare. However,
I just tried an Intellishare merge as I haven't done on for a long
while. I exported my test file to a new file, made some changes,
imported it and intellishare merged. I didn't get any doubled
marriages from the process.

I'm assuming I've understood you correctly and you did export your
wife's file from your Legacy copy of the file before she made the
changes. If it wasn't done that way, then, of course, Intellishare
wouldn't work.

Cheers,
Cathy

At 03:58 PM 11/02/2007, you wrote:

Richard, thanks for the reply. I undid the merge and supposedly
restored my file to the status prior to the merge. The
marriage/spouse dups are still there. Therefore, the dup issue must
have been created upon the importing of my wife's file into mine,
which results in duplication of everyone in the file. But I would
think that then merging and searching for duplicates should undo any
duplicate marriage links created by the import. I don't see any
options or settings that relate to duplicate marriages during merging.

I have attached a screen shot of the first manual merge person (out
of 314) that comes up when I use IntelliShare. These 314 were found
by the program to have differences between my file and my wife's
file. You can see that the left side of the screen shows duplicate
spouses (my file) and the right side shows the correct single spouse
(my wife's file). The reason this person requires manual merging is
because I made some corrections to the Birth and Residence location
fields--the differences between the two files has nothing to do with
duplicate spouses.

Since I did my cleanup from the gedcom transfer in MY file, it has
the most correct information regarding place and event names. So I
want to be sure to keep those when I merge. However, I don't want
to keep the duplicate spouses that are showing on the left (my file)
side of the screen.

What do I need to do to throw out the duplicate spouses created by
the import of my wife's Legacy file, but at the same time keep my
file maintenance changes?

And why isn't this done automatically?
I'm still not sure if there is something I am doing wrong or if this
is a problem with the IntelliShare feature.

Thank you!
Dennis

RE: [LegacyUG] Finding parents of spouses

2007-02-11 Thread Cathy

Hi Alice,

Unless you did a search for Relationship equal to Unrelated, I think
your 383 are likely people unattached to your major tree - so if you
can't see any of them, that's why.

There isn't a way of automatically tagging the parents of those who
marry in, however there is a way to include the parents of tagged
people in an exported file (Legacy or Gedcom) if your concern is to
export a file with them added. See the export dialogues.

Thanks Ron. I don't see how that will get me what I want. There are 1543

would be in that group of 383 non-related individuals. I think I will
assign another tag number to the non-related group and go down the name
list to try to find the matching parents. Can't think of anything else to
do but eyeball it. -- Alice

RE: [LegacyUG] photos question

2007-02-11 Thread Cathy

Hi Leo,
That actually won't work unless in your Word Processor you do some extra steps.

Yes if you tick the embed pictures in Legacy they will show in your
Word processor when you open the rtf report - but if you move the
original pictures they won't. They are really only linked to the
file to use Word terminology and in Microsoft Word you need to go to
Edit Links and choose to save the picture in the document and break
the link. You can do them all at once if you highlight the list.

Avoid disappointment

Re: [LegacyUG] I've married my wife--twice!

I didn't check a back up but I did check my wife's file (the one I
imported), which was a copy of my Legacy file, and the marriages weren't
duplicated there--at least in the few people I looked at. But, I don't
understand then why the RIN's would be the same??

I may try another test merge before we start entering a lot of new
data. I spent at least 2 hours manually unlinking duplicate spouses
today. I was hoping that is not the wave of the future!

Great tip for assigning RIN's for a merge..that could be a big help.

I'll let you know if I can 'duplicate' the duplicate problem in my next
test. Thanks

Not a flaw, but I put in all Source list names the
combination of place, date and surname, or 2 of 3 at
least.
USA, CA, Los Angeles, Downey Township, 1920
France, Genealogy of the Kings of France
UK, Complete Peerage, Bass-Canning [02] II
I would use Genealogy.com or Rootsweb.com as the
