[LegacyUG] Living individuals

2007-04-14 Thread Tom Element
Hello

Is there a way to check / mark all living persons in the database as private
in one operation? Easy to do one at a time but very tedious and, knowing
me, I'll miss a few!

Thanks

Tom

RE: [LegacyUG] Font Size for Legacy Home

2007-04-14 Thread Ted & Gail Duffy
Ron,
Excellent advice. Now I can easily read the News Items. Thank you for
pointing these out. From the ease of use I'm guessing these adjustments
could have been found in the Owners Manual, but there wasn't anything listed
in the index (and I haven't read it from cover to cover yet).
Thanks again.

Hi Ted,

If you go to Options on the Legacy Home Tab you can select zoom from there
and change the font size. Unfortunately this does not increase the font size

for the newsletter itself as Legacy is acting as a browser. For that I can
only suggest that you copy the path at the top and paste it into your normal

browser where you can usually adjust the font size.

Similarly for TO DOs at View>TO DOs there is an Option button from which you

can again adjust the font size but this only changes the details in the list

and not the panels at the bottom, I have no suggestion for that.

One thing you may like to try is on your computer going to:
Start>Control Panel>Display>Settings>Advanced and changing the DPI to Large
120 (its default is 96). You will need to restart after the change and you
may find that that you will need to reduce the size of you desktop items as
well. I have mine set at 120 for the same reason as yourself btw.

[LegacyUG] Entering "generic" information

2007-04-14 Thread Richard Heckman
Hi LUGgies,

A few days ago, I found some interesting newspaper articles that were written
about my family's earliest reunions in 1903 and 1904.

I would like to include these articles in my family's genealogy, but I have no
clue were to enter the information into Legacy.

Any suggestions as to where I might include "generic-type" newspaper articles
in Legacy? The information is of an historical nature, and I would like all
members of my family to have access to the articles.

I understand how to include articles, obits, etc., when they apply to a
specific individual, but this information, though germane to the early family
members in general, it really shouldn't be "attached" to an individual.

How I might enter this type of information into Legacy? Any suggestions???

RE: [LegacyUG] About Picture Filing

2007-04-14 Thread Olds-Wills-Anderson-Simonson Hodges-Harris-Liikala-Jukkara
Sally
Saving your images as a .tiff file is the commonly accepted 'best way' to
keep digital copies of your original. This would then become your 'master
copy'.

>From that you could make .jpgs to whatever file size you deem appropriate
for use (website, email atch, Legacy image, etc).

As for where to file your digital images, opinions on this will vary. I
have one folder under my Legacy directory titled "Images". Within this
folder I have several sub-folders. My preference is to keep all 'people'
images in one sub-folder titled "Photograph". I also have digital images of
buildings, monuments, correspondence, newspaper articles, census records,
documents, etc. These are also all filed in separate sub-folders according
to their subject category.

How you title your images is also a matter of personal preference. I prefer
a simple numbering system (File ID). For example, my "Photographs" are
labeled P0001, P0002, P0003, and so on. My "Documents" are labeled D0001,
D0002, D0003, and so on. The same applies to my other image categories.

Legacy allows you to capture details of each image by providing image fields
such as "Caption", "Date", "Description", and "File ID". And also permits
assigning images to specific individuals. This is where I record the
necessary details about each image.

Unfortunately as yet Legacy only provides one report format for this
information. The report sorts by File ID. Suggestions have been submitted
to also include an alphabetical sort and other image report options.

Until then one must use a supplemental program to report details of the
images. Many people use MS Access since Access is directly compatible with
Legacy's data base. However, this requires a reasonable understanding of
the Access program and its interface with Legacy to generate the desired
reports. Not a lighthearted undertaking.

Once Legacy establishes a more sophisticated report capability for images,
the process will be simple and efficient.

If I can help further with any specific questions, feel free to email me
directly.

[LegacyUG] About Picture Filing

I'm trying to figure out how to organize the pictures. With an HP scanner
the image goes to the HP Solutions Center which apparently stores the scans
by date. I've been opening them and doing some modest editing, then saving
them in TIFF format to an external hard drive. Then I open the tiff images
in Photoshop Elements and do more dramatic editing and save as jpeg on
external drive, in folder of edited images, to post to MyFamily website and
to use in email. This seems like a lot of manipulating for each image and
at this point I still have to add the image to Legacy. I've got multiple
copies of each image but not really a backup since they're in different
formats and stages of editing and sizes. Before adding too many more I need
to figure out a filing system--in separate family folders,
lastnamefirstname+brief description or date if I have it, is what I'm
thinking so far. Is there a better way to do this? What are the rest of
you doing to organize your photos, what programs are you using?

size of the characters on the Legacy Home tab such as the Legacy News and

For

those of us over 50 the printing on the Legacy Home window pane is hard to

RE: [LegacyUG] About Pictures

2007-04-14 Thread Brenda Van Dyke
As Ron said below, it is very much a personal choice. Since I work in
computers and have a lot of files, I made a "Genealogy" folder under the "My
Documents" folder. I keep all files genealogy-related in that folder,
including pictures. Then, when I move to a new computer, hopefully(!) all
data will stay in the same place and I won't lose the paths on the pics in
Legacy.

Kirsten,

A lot of what you ask is very much personal choice. You should, however, be
clear that Legacy only stores the paths to the pictures and not the pictures

themselves excepting that the multimedia back-up contains both the paths and

the pictures.

If you are thinking that in future you may wish to send the pictures with
your files to, say, a relative(s) than you are probably best saving them in
the Legacy folder as this is usually stored on the C:\ drive (if one used
the default installation). By storing here you can just send your two
back-up files and they will run without problem on another computer with
Legacy.

I have my pictures stored in My Documents and would keep them there. I
started off with two folders viz. pictures and documents, and have continued

with this system. However as time passed I found that one folder for
documents was not enough so I now have one for each current year (not the
year to which the record relates but that during which I stored the
picture). If I was to start afresh I would certainly have separate folders
for censuses, births, marriages, deaths etc but would stick with the basic
system.

There is nothing wrong with doing them in family lines and at the end of the

day you need a system which fits in with your way of working. I suggest that

before adopting any system you think about the future and how many
pictures/documents might be accumulated and hence how many folders you may
need and the best way of arranging a balanced system.

Re: [LegacyUG] Overwhelming

2007-04-14 Thread Wendy Howard
Another option is to use a filter or rule to direct the list posts to a
folder away from your other mail. Then the list mail is separate from
your other mail, and can be ignored until such time as you're ready to
concentrate on it.

This has been discussed many times in the past, so you can find more in
the archives if you wish. There are instructions for setting a
filter/rule for another list on my web site, which can be adapted to
this list - see
http://www.geocities.com/wendy_m_howard/How-to.htm#RuleFilter

As a new user of Legacy I am finding the amount of email is
overwhelming. Have the people at Millennia considered hosting a Group
site at Yahoo! or some other information sharing portal or tool that
the users can modify what information they receive and/or filter on
those topics they are interested in? Am I missing something here or is
it a pain to scroll through numerous strings of email messages just to
locate information I am interested in?

[LegacyUG] Font Size for Legacy Home

2007-04-14 Thread Ted & Gail Duffy
As a brand new user I’m still trying to figure out how to increase the font
size of the characters on the Legacy Home tab such as the Legacy News and
To Do Items. I can adjust font sizes on other windows per the Help menu. For
those of us over 50 the printing on the Legacy Home window pane is hard to
read. Any suggestions?

Ted

Re: [LegacyUG] Another refinement

2007-04-14 Thread Elsie Saar
That would be great. I now have an event I call relationship and enter it for
all people, either how they relate to me or how they related to my husband. If
I don't, I'll be chasing people who have no connection to our lines. I would
love to be able to automatically tract relationships for my husband and myself
at the same time. I put that request in.

When the developers are looking for enhancements, they might consider adding
the option of showing relationships on web generated pedidgree charts. I send a
lot of people to check out my web page and they find who our common link is via
the index and then have the devil's own job connecting me to the them! If all
people on my tree were identified as to my relationship to them, it would be so
much more clear - and as the relationships are already showing up in the
database anyway, I can't see that as being very hard to program in.

  Any chance?

2007-04-14 Thread Dawn Crowley
Go to www.worldcat.org and cut & paste the title. (Sometimes it works
best to do a portion of a title or use key words.) Then type in your
city & state or zipcode. (I'm not sure how that works for folks outside
of the US.) Worldcat provides a list of libraries by distance from your
zipcode that have that title. Since I see that you're in CA like me, I
typed in my Long Beach area zip code. This book is at 15 libraries
within 50 miles of my home. This is one awesome website!

RE: [LegacyUG] About Pictures

2007-04-14 Thread ronald ferguson

Hello Group:

I am accumulating a fair number of scans of photos and documents which are
scattered all over my computer: in "My Pictures," "My Scans," attached to
e-mails, or stuck in various surname folders under "My Documents." It's
time to get organized. I have no interest in creating a slide show or
family book, but would still like to have these images associated with the
appropriate family groups in Legacy. What is the best way to go about
doing
this? Should I move everything to a common folder first? And if so,
where?

Would it be a folder within my Legacy folder, or in a different location?
Should there be subfolders for different family lines?

If I then back up my Legacy file, will it also include those associated
pictures?

These are probably rather naive questions but after 10+ years of
computerized genealogy, I've never before attached an image to my gen
software and really don't know where to start or what to expect. Any
guidance would be appreciated.

Re: [LegacyUG] Research Guidance Error

2007-04-14 Thread Brian/Support

Mike,

Add Marriage Event works to ADD a marriage to the individual, that is
why you are seeing the add new wife screen with the option to add a new
person or link to an existing. This is exactly as advertised in the Help
"Add Marriage Event
This option displays the Add wife/husband screen, to add a spouse to the
current individual"

To add an event to an existing marriage here are the instructions from
the Edit Event Section of the help. "The Marriage Information screen
appears if you have a Marriage event highlighted." On that marriage
screen you can add events for the marriage you have selected..

Mike Fry wrote:

There appears to be a small error in the Research Guidance operations.

Tab 1 - Review Timeline - enables the user to add to the list of
timeline events by clicking on the 'Add Event/Fact' button. This then
pops up a menu where the type of event (vital, custom and marriage) can
be selected. The 'Vital' and 'Custom' options both perform as advertised
in the on-line help. The 'Marriage' option doesn't!.

I would expect it to work slightly differently according to the marriage
state of the individual concerned.

If no spouses are linked to the individual, then the program should
prompt the user to add a spouse to the individual. This should be as per
usual - add a new person or link to an existing individual. Thereafter,
the Marriage Information screen should be presented, allowing the user
to add an event.

If the individual is linked with one spouse, then the program should
present the Marriage Information screen and proceed as above.

If the individual is linked with two or more spouses, then the Spouse
List should be presented, and, after the individual selects the
appropriate spouse, processing can proceed as above.

At present, when I try to add a marriage event to an individual that has
one or more spouses, the program proceeds as though there was no spouse
at all.

e-mails, or stuck in various surname folders under "My Documents." It's
time to get organized. I have no interest in creating a slide show or
family book, but would still like to have these images associated with the
appropriate family groups in Legacy. What is the best way to go about doing
this? Should I move everything to a common folder first? And if so, where?
Would it be a folder within my Legacy folder, or in a different location?
Should there be subfolders for different family lines?

If I then back up my Legacy file, will it also include those associated
pictures?

These are probably rather naive questions but after 10+ years of
computerized genealogy, I've never before attached an image to my gen
software and really don't know where to start or what to expect. Any
guidance would be appreciated.

Kirsten

The first thing one must notice is that in the years given there was no
State of Virginia. It was a
colony of the British Empire. That means that there could be no State
Census. With that in mind a
search of colonial records, both American and British, might be in order.

Yes, I they have to email me back, and I have to check the database and then
explain it to them or add a chart (not all of them are familiar with the way
some of the charts are laid out) As I have 4000 assorted ancestors going
back the 1500s, some are quite distant!

everyone wouldn't want it. It's difficult to tell anyone how they are

enhancement is on the list, but could Staff say how soon this may come to

When the developers are looking for enhancements, they might consider adding
the option of showing relationships on web generated pedidgree charts. I
send a lot of people to check out my web page and they find who our common
link is via the index and then have the devil's own job connecting me to the
them! If all people on my tree were identified as to my relationship to
them, it would be so much more clear - and as the relationships are already
showing up in the database anyway, I can't see that as being very hard to
program in.

Any chance?

Any chance?

RE: [LegacyUG] Charting recommendations

2007-04-14 Thread Mel Morris
I agree, I would like something a little more flexible, that does regular
and fan trees, but I'd prefer it to be incorporated with the regular
software. I'd be prepared to pay a little extra for it but I don't really
want a astand alone program unless I absolutely have to - I'm sure my early
gen prog - Generations had built in charting, but its so long ago I can't
remember.

The charting deficiencies are exasperating. I wish they would team up with
AutoCAD to create some software that would allow much more to be done in
this area. The charts and trees are probably the most popular keepsakes at
family reunions. I think there's a big demand for these.

At our last family reunion I used Charting to generate a part of our family
tree. It came out to 11 pages that I taped together and hung on the wall.
The font was microscopic, so it was of limited use. And it wasn't possible
to move things around. The rolls of paper that plotters used could generate
sheets as long as anyone could want.
