Bruce,

I may be seriously misunderstanding your point but I maintain that there *is

Russ,
I am not using the house icons.
What I am attempting to do is to document EVERY address that my father
(mother) lived at during their life and every job my father had and
to see how they correlate. If I put the addresses as Residence Events
in the marriage and my father's employment as Employment Events with
his other individual events (which I have done up to now), there is no
correlation between the two during the marriage (and the marriage
Resident Events do not even appear in the individual report).

In order to get the correlation, it appears I must put ALL Residence
Events under my father with the rest of his Individual Events.
Thanks,
Bruce

To show address of couple in the marriage event screen one would use the

I have always considered Occupation as an Individual Event and not a
 Marriage Event.

The reason for this is quite simple. Whilst my marriage addresses were
always in the Manchester area UK my places of work have been all over
Europe
and totally unrelated. For much of my working life my office was in
London.
I have seen this with my ancestors who at census time were staying in

I am puzzled as to where to put my father's employment events.

I have up to now put Residence Events with the individual until
married and then put all following Residence Events with the marriage.

Now when I started putting my father's Employment Events (some before
marriage, others after), I put all of them as individual events. Then
I realized that any Employment Events that occurred after his marriage
would not match where he lived at that time. The Residence Events
after marriage would be under the marriage section of the Family Group
Sheet and would not appear at all in the Individual Report.

How do others decide whether to use Individual or Marriage Events for
 Resident Employment (and other) Events?

 Thanks,
 Bruce Jones

I'm not certain I'm following this thread correctly. My method of seeing
immediately how or if someone is related to me in my database is by
using a column in the Index to show the relationship to me, if any. Of
course, it will only display the relationship for the focus person set

When the developers are looking for enhancements, they might consider
adding the option of showing relationships on web generated pedidgree
charts. I send a lot of people to check out my web page and they find
who our common link is via the index and then have the devil's own job
connecting me to the them! If all people on my tree were identified as
to my relationship to them, it would be so much more clear - and as the
relationships are already showing up in the database anyway, I can't see
that as being very hard to program in.

Any chance?

Re: [LegacyUG] Individual events vs marriage events

2007-04-17 Thread Bruce Jones

Ron,
I probably should not have used the term correlation. My goal is to
have my father's Individual Events listed chronologically so that when
I see an Employment Event, I can look above it until I see a Residence
Event to see where he was living when he took that job. Or to see how
many times he moved while at the same job.

I have decided to try the solution offered by Susan Daily. I have
therefore moved (actually copied) all the Residence Events from his
marriage to his individual area. That accomplishes my goal, but
leaves me wondering if I want to do that with my mother as well (they
moved a LOT).

Thanks for your concern and for all your many responses on this forum.

Indeed it is. This from the Help file:

The AutoSource feature of Legacy lets you automatically assign a master
source to each incoming individual when you are doing an import. This
is often very useful as documentation of where you received the
information and is much easier to do and use than making an entry in the

When you are about to import a Legacy, GEDCOM, or PAF file, you can
select a master source to cite for each person by clicking AutoSource on
the Import window.

Moira,

When a Gedcom is inported you are asked if you wish to source the Gedcom (or
words to that effect) If you answer Yes to this then it will be sourced in
unspecified. This in no way affects any sources which may be contained in

Moira,
You can't do that (add a prefix) to the incoming source. The best
thing for you to do is perhaps import this to a new family file, work
with the master source list, fixing it as you'd like, and then import
that into your main family file.

Some purists, of course, will tell you that the source is the GEDCOM
(unless that GEDCOM was done by you), rather than the sources to the
data, which you haven't seen presumably. I make no such judgement
calls for other people. When I imported a GEDCOM from Worldconnect,
after emailing the author and talking about the tree, I imported it
into a separate file, cleaned up the data, then imported it into my

Re: [LegacyUG] Sourcing Sources

2007-04-17 Thread Junk Man

Another possible solution would be to edit the gedcom file itself prior to
importing.

Use a text editor (I use UltraEdit but if it isn't too big, even NotePad
would work) to open the import GED file. The gedcom file uses a tagged
interface format (each piece of data has a tag. Locate the source tag (if I
remember correctly it is SOUR) and see what the values look like. For a
generic import, they should be readable text.

Using a global search and replace (be sure to save a protected copy - this
can have unanticipated results), replace the tag and following space SOUR
with a replacement tag and space and source prefix SOUR AdamSmithGEDCOM -

If all goes well, every source in the file will now have the prefix
attached. (I don't have Legacy at work to play with).

Moira,
You can't do that (add a prefix) to the incoming source. The best
thing for you to do is perhaps import this to a new family file, work
with the master source list, fixing it as you'd like, and then import
that into your main family file.

Some purists, of course, will tell you that the source is the GEDCOM
(unless that GEDCOM was done by you), rather than the sources to the
data, which you haven't seen presumably. I make no such judgement
calls for other people. When I imported a GEDCOM from Worldconnect,
after emailing the author and talking about the tree, I imported it
into a separate file, cleaned up the data, then imported it into my
file but with the author and her WorldConnect tree as my source. I
added some of our email discussions as other sources and notes.

Sorry this isn't the answer you were looking for.

[LegacyUG] GEDCOM - confused

2007-04-17 Thread Debbie Freeman

Hello Everyone,

Sorry. I am foggy headed today.

I think I created a focus group of a small part of my Legacy Deluxe
file. It is Mary Ellen, i.e. the wives family, i.e. parents, step
mothers, siblings, etc.

I then created a GEDCOM file from the focus group in my Legacy Deluxe
files. I then tried to open the GEDCOM to take a closer look for editing
purposes, and to add more details before I uploaded it to the web.

For some reason the program, Legacy would not allow me to open the
GEDCOM file without changing it to a Legacy Deluxe File.

Is that not possible, if not how does one view a GEDCOM file for editing
purposes without changing it back to a Legacy Deluxe file?

Thanks,

[LegacyUG] Generational List or Report??

2007-04-17 Thread S Miller

Hello

Apologies if this issue has already been addressed in the archives but I
couldn't see that it had.

I have been trying to figure out a way for Legacy to generate a list (via
query or report) that shows all the individuals of a particular generation
or failing that a list of all individuals in the file grouped/sorted by
generation. It would be nice to also have included in that list the
birthdates of individuals.

The closest I've come is scrolling through a descendant list and
transcribing into a text or doc file as I work my way through the 12 (and
counting) generations I have so far. Any suggestions would be much
appreciated!

Thank you,
Sandra

Re: [LegacyUG] Sourcing Sources

2007-04-17 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
I create the Source List Name in my style, put the
transcription in the text, with the additional info as
to where 'I' got it, and state if an attempt will be
done to further verify it. Example, a census can be
found elsewhere, but a handwritten original document
can only be found at one place. I use the sender as
the original source, or if I have a photocopy, I (my
file drawer) am now the repository.
Put the 'genealogy' of ownership in the comments
section.
The important thought is, make sure credit is given
for the sender for all sent/recieved, and explain any
changes done to the same. I calcuate all ages/dates
outside of the transcription, but add to the bottom.

If I am getting the idea you want, it is to
A. create a ged-com,
B. edit it, then
C. send it through the Legacy program.
You need to edit the database file before creating the
G. After, you can use a Word program to edit the G.
and then send it as a regular documnet. If the
additions would be appropriate to add the the
individual notes fields permanantly, that may be the
ticket.
I hope this helps.

Indeed it is. This from the Help file:

The AutoSource feature of Legacy lets you
 automatically assign a master
source to each incoming individual when you are
 doing an import. This
is often very useful as documentation of where you
 received the
information and is much easier to do and use than
 making an entry in the
 Note field.

When you are about to import a Legacy, GEDCOM, or
 PAF file, you can
select a master source to cite for each person by
 clicking AutoSource on
 the Import window.

Mary,

As Mike has already told you, it is possible customize the columns that
are displayed under the Index Tab. Are you using Legacy 6 deluxe? I
don't remember if the Index tab is included on standard Legacy v6.

If you want to try this to see if it's helpful to your work flow,

click on the Index Tab.

Click on Options in the upper right of the Index window.
Here you will see Customize Columns. Click on this option.
You will see a screen/window called Index View Columns
on the left of this Index View Columns is a table called Field Name
at the end of each line is a little ...
click on the little ... and another window will pop up that allows you
to choose what you want displayed in that column in your Index view. The
little scroll arrow will allow you to see many choices to select from.

Just go through, setting the various columns you wish to be displayed.
On the right hand table you can type in whatever name you want to use
for that particular column header in your personalized Index view.

My personal choices are:
RIN - Full Name (surname, given) - Birth Date - Birth Place - * Spouse
(for preferred spouse) - Relationship
Using this set up, I can quickly look up a person in my database and see
their relationship to me, if any.

Then to see how we're related, I can use the Relationship calculator to
determine the common ancestor.

I also have additional columns set with different information that don't
show unless I move the slider bar at the bottom of the window.

If the columns need to be resized for width, position your cursor on the
little line that separates each column in the column header. When it
locks onto the line, your cursor will change to what resembles
(somewhat) a little + sign. When this occurs, you can drag the little
line, which will narrow or widen a specific column. This will allow you
to set the columns to display as much information as you wish for each
column in view.

If you don't like the changes, you can always click on the 'Default'
option in the Index View Columns window, to return to the original
settings.

I'm not certain I'm following this thread correctly. My method of seeing
immediately how or if someone is related to me in my database is by
using a column in the Index to show the relationship to me, if any. Of
course, it will only display the relationship for the focus person set

I like using the pdf function in sharing with relatives because most people
can't change MY reports. The average computer user only has Adobe Reader

I liked the article because he is correct in stating that the pdf format for
Legacy reports keeps a certain professionalism about the reports that should
be visible if a person wants his/her reports and data to look creditable.

I often attach reports the way he describes. It comes by way of habit when
using Microsoft Outlook and the various Microsoft Office products as they
are all interrelated which also helps me keep organized in ways that Legacy
doesn't.

Thanks for the link to the article. It is a helpful article.

Re: [LegacyUG] GEDCOM - confused

2007-04-17 Thread Cathy

Hi Debbie,

it really depends what you mean by for editing purposes and how
much you understand Gedcoms. As you've been told, they're text files
so you can open them in Notepad or any Word Processor. If you use a
Word Processor, make sure you resave in text format. Also check that
the file extension is still .ged and not .txt

If you just want to view the Gedcom, you either open in Legacy as a
new Legacy file - and you can check that it included what you wanted
and excluded what you wanted. If other editing is required, you can
do it in a familiar environment and then export the whole new Legacy
file as your revised Gedcom.
I'd want to think about adding some of that editing back to the
original file so my workflow would be different.

1) Create the Focus Group
2) Export to a Legacy File
3) Check and edit
4) Create the Gedcom
5) Intellishare merge the new Legacy file back into the old to pick
up the changes. You are presented the ones that have changed to look
at and can choose whether or not to include the change in your original file.

Another way of looking at a Gedcom is to use GenViewer - a separate
program. See the Legacy Add-ons on the Legacy Website.

Cheers,
Cathy

RE: [LegacyUG] Sourcing Sources

2007-04-17 Thread Cathy

Hi Moira,

You can't do this automatically.
If you import to a new Legacy file to clean up locations etc, I also
clean up sources at the same time.

In the Master Source List, I edit the Source list name and Title of
each by adding Joe Bloggs from to the beginning of each.
You can do this faster in Access but possible in Legacy. I hadn't
thought of doing it in the Gedcom itself - must try that.

I find this much more useful than just adding them as a source to
each bit of data on import as that still leaves their sources intact
which aren't mine. Although I do that as well so that they're still
there as a source when I've checked their sources and made them mine
and deleted theirs. This is also important as they may have unsourced
data in their file and I want to know that it came from them and it
wasn't me forgetting to add my source when I entered the data. I
don't forget often but sometimes miss clicking the Source Clipboard.

I don't use the general automatic sourcing that just enters them in
the unspecified source field.

Cheers,
Cathy

Thanks for the response but I know about that feature. I don't think I have
explained correctly.

When one imports gedcom's that already have sources attached to the records,
these sources get added to your source list. What one ends up with are lots
of sources that you have not created yourself. If I could prefix the source
coming in, I could at least know where it came from when I look at my master
source list.

Cathy,

I do not know Access but I take it it has a Search Replace facility so
should be pretty fast in changing Source Names. However, if you are going to
look at changing the details in a Gedcom as text, and for those who do not
have Access, I would suggest downloading the free program PSPad from:
http://www.pspad.com/en/ which is basically a text editor.

Personally, I do not change the sources, other than to merge them into mine,
as I verify all myself before accepting them and only use PSPad for writing
html etc.

RE: [LegacyUG] Sourcing Sources

2007-04-17 Thread Cathy

Thanks Ron,
My husband is also periodically trying to get me to download other
text editors. I really have never felt the need. Notepad works fine
for the odd times I need to edit text and if I want something more
sophisticated, I'd rather use Word, which I use a lot, and then save as text.

I also use Turbonote - one of the Sticky Note programs - for quick
notes and alarms and for transcribing stuff...
and Clipmate which captures everything put on the Windows Clipboard
for later use and can be used as a freeform database of bits and
pieces. I do some minor editing in Clipmate.

2007-04-17 Thread Mel Morris
I can understand that here in N.A. but coming from the UK the whole concept
of bridal showers are alien :) as are baby showers for that matter. It took
us quite by surprise when we first emigrated, so I never really thought
about it vis a vis my family tree.

Mel -

I have found one thing I tend to put under marriage events in more
recent marriages - say 1880s and later - that many times really define
some family relationships and that's hometown newspaper clippings of
bridal showers. There is nothing like a clipping that says shower hosted
by Miss so-and-so, sister of the groom-to-be. Lunch was served by Mrs.
so-and-so, aunt of the bride-to-be and the giftbook maintained by Miss
so-and-so, niece of the bride-to-be.

Similarly the wedding party is many times defined in a wedding story in
the local newspaper and other relatives may be mentioned by relationship
in the list of those who attended the reception. The wedding events
listing is a perfect place to store the full clip.

Best wishes,
Jackie King,

 Thanks,
 Bruce Jones

Re: [LegacyUG] Generational List or Report??

2007-04-17 Thread Lloyd A. Horrocks

Sandra,

A faster method might be to generate a descendant or ancestor book report,
depending on your starting point, for your word processor. You can then
edit to save only the information that you want. Then you will have your
doc file.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Thank you,
Sandra
