Re: [LegacyUG] "Non-standard" locations

2007-07-13 Thread WILLIAMS MYERS
A big HI and thanks for all of the questions/answers.

I too have had the same problem with the need for four slots for a location.
I tried to use "city", "twp","state", "country". Then I tried to use "city
(twp if needed)", "state", "country". I have now standardized on "city",
"twp", "state", "country". If I want to verify the spelling of the county,
using the location verifier, I select "ignore the city" and then search.
This will bring up the county. When it asks for what to save, I manually
type in the long and short form of the location. I hope that this might
suggest a possible solution.

As to the ancient locations (if or when I run into this problem), I think
that I would use the modern location. And then in the notes, give a complete
verbal description. You could also flag the modern location with ("see
notes").

Happy hunting

Bill Myers

Dee,

Maybe I've just missed something, but when I try to create a Family
Group Record as you suggest, and click on Record Selection, the only
options available (once I've chosen who I want to start with) are:

* Only the current family or individual
* Focus Group Records
* All individuals in the entire family tree (with spouses)
* All Marriages in the Entire Family Tree (sorted by MRIN)
* Individuals with tag:
* Marriages with tag:

There is no option (that I can see) to choose a marriage, the children
of that marriage and their grandchildren (i.e., the first marriages
grandchildren), which is what I believe Tish wanted.

Is there something else I should check, or am I looking at the wrong

I'd appreciate the input. No doubt I'm making a simple error. Thanks all !

Re: [LegacyUG] "Non-standard" locations

2007-07-13 Thread ronald ferguson

Bill,

What you are suggesting may OK for the States but not for other countries.
Parts of what is now France for example have from time to time been parts of
Germany, similarly with many other countries. How would you handle the
situation with the new Eastern Russian countries, previously part of Russia
- not to mention Africa? As I have said before many countries do not have
states/provinces/regions/counties/hundreds/parishes/townships/villages/hamlets
etc. etc. etc.

I'm sorry but I do not accept the premise of this thread - "non-standard"
locations. There is no such thing as a "Standard" location and in my view to
try and make it such on a universal basis is a waste time. OK for the
States, maybe, but for anywhere else generally not.

Valerie,

Just to clarify, you can get a date on the reports, but as far I know
you cannot print the time on reports. I think it is the time you are
looking for. If it is just the date, then go to Reports...

Report Options (a button at the bottom centre)
Footers (Tab)
check "Include the date printed"

is what you record. If it says she lived in Westmoreland (a county
which officially no longer exists) you record Westmoreland and not
Cumbria which is a new-fangled county which embraces, amongst others,
what used to be Westmoreland.

If you think your "audience" will not understand that you are being
historically accurate, then you can put the modern (or "correct" if
there is such a thing) interpretation into your Notes. Personally, I
wouldn't usually bother because I don't think what is current *now* is
relevant.

Re: [LegacyUG] "Non-standard" locations

2007-07-13 Thread Mitch Mackrory

Jenny,

Off the main topic, but since you used it as an example, I record
*every* name I find in the "Alternate Names" section with the
source(s) of each name used. What I believe is the current most
correct name is the one I show as the "Main Name". That is a major
advantage of Legacy - it lets me do that instead of burying that in
some notes.

Cheers, Mitch

But that goes against one of the basic "rules" of genealogy that you
always record exactly what you find, not what you think it ought to be,

RE: [LegacyUG] "Non-standard" locations

2007-07-13 Thread mffowler
Thank you all for this wonderful discussion. I did intentionally use
quotation marks in the title of the message because I have realized that
what is common to one area is not always appropriate for another. I was
hoping for input from group members from outside the USA.

Before beginning input into Legacy I had reviewed all of the Legacy training
DVDs. Geoff focused on the advantages of using the four place locations and
the commas as place holders for unknown information. But as Ron says it
just doesn't work for non-USA locations. I will use the information I find
in my research with the current equivalent or explanations in the notes. I
think consistency is the best "standard."

And yes, I mean that Rollo. I had just been reading "The Oxford History of
Medieval Europe" when I found the information about "migrations" and the
Vikings. That is where I found the information about the area of "Normandy"
being given to Rollo to keep the Vikings from advancing further inland.
Interesting concept!

Thanks again for all your input. Perhaps this will help others who run into
"non-standard" data.

RE: [LegacyUG] REAL locations

2007-07-13 Thread Jack Earnshaw
You are so right in accepting (after Ron's info) that you should enter the
location as you found it.

But please don't spoil your response with talking about others with "non
standard" data.

By all means state "non USA" data. As for the rest of the world - each
country has its own way of recording villages, towns etc etc.

As Ron said there is no such thing as a "standard" four field notation. ISO,
EN or any other body has not pronounced to my knowledge. It is just
something that seems to fit most places in the USA.

I will NOT be squeezed into such a notation for myself or any of my
relatives as we have always lived in England - and are proud of the fact
that conventions were always broken. I live in Wokingham, Berkshire,
England - note that there are only three parts to the location and nobody
can tell me that I need to add a spurious comma where it doesn't belong. And
guess what - Wokingham is a town and not a city as most web sites seem to
think or require.

I'd like to know who tried to tell everybody that there is a standard
notation that uses 4 fields. Even Legacy allows you to enter data as you
wish to - with 1, 2 or even 25 commas if you wish.

So please, everybody, THINK about the information you have and record it as
it is presented to you, without messing with it so that it looks like an
American city.

How are you getting the info from the laptop? Is it on a network or a CDRom.
The reason for asking is that copying files to CD and then trying to access
them on another machine tends to give grief as they are readonly. If the
file is on a CD then copy to the hard disk, change to Read/write (using
file/propertie) and then try to use it.

If you are accessing the file across a network, do you have full access to
the remote directory? Google searches for "Access Error 530" suggest that
the problem is to do with Network Access Permissions

[LegacyUG] Legacy & Vista

2007-07-13 Thread TaylorResearch4u
I just purchased a laptop computer - with Windows Vista. My desk-top has
Windows XP.
I have Legacy Deluxe (which means I have all the features and a customer #).
What I want to do is copy my Legacy programme and all the relevant files to
my laptop (keeping the original on the desktop). When this is accomplished -
I'll be able to take the laptop to the main library (here in Columbus, OH), or
to a historical centre, etc. and "in-put" new data immediately.
Which is better to do... copy everything onto a "jump drive" (I have one
that holds 2GB) and down-load it onto the laptop OR down-load the programme
from
the disc that came with the manual and then down-load from the Legacy website
the up-date(s)??? Note that I am on "dial-up" and down-loading from the
internet is going to be quite time consuming. Also, will I be able to
down-load
the programme from the internet without buying it again (in short - enter my
customer # somewhere)?
Any help is and will be greatly appreciated...
Happy hunting...
Pami Taylor

RE: [LegacyUG] Error 530

2007-07-13 Thread ronald ferguson

Elaine,

I am afraid I need some clarification. Is there a message with the error
number? As Jack says this is not a Legacy listed error but is listed by
microsoft for various errors.

I am not clear about what you mean by "restore". Are you saying that Legacy
will not run at all or you cannot get it to load your family file? If the
latter are you trying to load the .fdb file (ie the normal one) or the
backup .zip file? In either event please tell us in detail how you are
trying to do this and where the file(s) are.

I take it btw that you have installed Legacy on your desktop.

RE: [LegacyUG] REAL locations

2007-07-13 Thread Kirsten Bowman

I don't see the location guidelines as an attempt to "US-ify" all the
world's locations; it's just a way to tie data entered to capabilities
already existing in the program. The very existence of a single long
location field rather than a string of 3 (or 7) separate boxes allows any
amount of flexibility in entering the data. Legacy is, after all, simply a
database with certain features pre-programmed for each field. In order for
those features to work best, it's necessary to pick *some* guidelines for
data entry. If the features attached to that field don't apply to your
situation, it's easy to just ignore the guidelines and enter data in a way
that will produce the results you want.

Peace,

Kirsten

Jack

Kirsten,

I don't recollect anybody suggesting that anybody was trying to "US-ify"
locations but simply that world-wide locations cannot be standardised -
neither today nor in the past. Hence to talk about "a standard" is not
accurate. There is no standard.

Re: [LegacyUG] Error 530

2007-07-13 Thread Cathy

Hi Ellaine,

Like the others, I need more information.

Are you making a backup of your family file on the laptop direct to
the thumb drive?
And then putting the thumb drive in your desktop and using Legacy -
File > Restore and then getting the error?

If you've cut your family file to CD, then Legacy can't open it while
it is on the CD. As Jack said, you have to copy it to the hard drive
of the desktop and may need to change the read only attribute by
right clicking on the file on the desktop and choosing properties and
then unchecking Read Only.

You said you've reinstalled Legacy several times - on the laptop or
the desktop - using the latest downloaded copy or ?

Can't help without more information.

For this type of error, emailing Sherry direct at Legacy Support
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> is the best idea - though she does take
time off over the weekend.

How are you getting the info from the laptop? Is it on a network or
a CDRom. The reason for asking is that copying files to CD and then
trying to access them on another machine tends to give grief as they
are readonly. If the file is on a CD then copy to the hard disk,
change to Read/write (using file/propertie) and then try to use it.

If you are accessing the file across a network, do you have full
access to the remote directory? Google searches for "Access Error
530" suggest that the problem is to do with Network Access Permissions

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy & Vista

2007-07-13 Thread Cathy

Hi Pami,

Yes you can install Legacy to your laptop and your desktop using the
same Customer # - this is part of the licence so long as both
computers are for your personal use.

Legacy has to be installed to both computers. You can't copy Program
files from one computer to another and expect the program to work. Of
course you copy your data files - or, if you are often using one and
then the other computer, you may like to have your main copy of your
data on your jump drive and backup to the hard disk of both
computers. That's what a number of users do. It certainly saves
problems with updating the wrong copy of the database and then having
to check who was updated with what on which computer to bring the
databases back in sync.

Updating Legacy with dial-up is a problem as the program has become
so large. Maybe you need to visit a friend with broadband with that
lovely big jump drive and ask them to download the program for you -
using the Download full setup option. Note that the update file and
the initial install file are the same and that the standard and
deluxe are the same file. When you update from within the program,
the update routine checks which files need to be updated and only
downloads those files. However, this includes the legacy.exe file and
that is a very big file.
So if you do use your dial-up, you probably are best off to download
the full install program and then use it on both computers. I used to
do this when I was on dial-up as I didn't trust the stability to
update the program direct from the internet in case I lost the
connection during the process.

[LegacyUG] backup methods & problems

2007-07-13 Thread mike swain
Hi Cathy,
in your reply to Pami you wrote.
"if you are often using one and then the other computer, you may like to have
your main copy of your
data on your jump drive and backup to the hard disk of both computers."

As i am yet another new user of Legacy, would you mind explaining how best to
setup the file structure to enable that method of operating. eg. would i need
to have the entire Legacy program, and all sub folders on the jump drive or
just the Data folder. At present i have all of my MM within 'My Documents',
would it be preferable to move them to Legacy/Pictures?

To transfer data from my D.Top to my Notebook I do a backup of the file and the
MM to my HD, burn a DVD or use a jump drive, then do a restore on the notebook.
I am getting about a 2% file error message of "Bad CRC". This is happening when
using either the DVD or the Jump Drive.

any words of wisdom will be greatly appreciated,

mike

P.S. I am using the latest version of Legacy 6, Deluxe & both machines run XP.

Re: [LegacyUG] backup methods & problems

2007-07-13 Thread Cathy

Hi Mike,
Sorry I can't comment on the error message you are getting.

I prefer to separate program and data files. It's the data files
which can helpfully be kept on a USB drive when you're using two
computers regularly.

Unless you're running special programs which enable you to install a
program to your USB drive (I've never done that but understand it can
be done), just keep your data and Multimedia on your USB drive. There
should be enough room even if you have lots of pictures attached to
Legacy as you should have smaller versions of your pics attached to
Legacy rather than archive sized ones. If you think there isn't
enough room or your USB drive picks up a different drive letter on
each computer, keep the MM on both computers *in the same folder
structure* on the same lettered drive. (eg - if your User Name on one
computer is Mike and on the other Michael - don't keep them in My
Docs as the path will be different).

It doesn't matter where you keep your multimedia files attached to
Legacy however it simplifies life if they're not mixed up with
multimedia files not attached to Legacy.

I keep mine in subfolders to a folder called Legacy Pictures.
I happen to like to keep all similar files together so this folder is
in My Pictures.

If you shift the pictures that are attached, you'll have to tell
Legacy where to find them again. You don't have to reattach them. You
need to use the Options > Customise - locations tab - Test all
multimedia paths button and find one file in each folder you have used.

Cheers,
Cathy

Re: [LegacyUG] I am asking for help - again!

2007-07-13 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
IMHO, it seems that Tish is unaware of the standard
'definition' of a Family Group sheet is. It consists
of a couple, and the children they have created
together, frequently in a marriage situation. Children
from two or more 'unions', though living together in a
blended family, do not belong in the same family group
sheet. This is not a moral or legal issue, as much as
a 'logical' issue. There is no love in logic, nor
logic in love! I have done the natural parents of my
adopted children. The kids have two sets of parents.
Is that logical? Do I care
Just understand that this program, as all computers
and programs, run on logic.
I hope this is clearer.
