Re: [LegacyUG] A PROBLEM WITH LEGACY ON TWO COMPUTERS!

2007-08-17 Thread Cathy

Hi Darlene,

Is it possible that you have two Legacy installations on the second
computer - one that is updated to the latest build and one that
isn't? This could happen if you shifted program files after
installation or if for some other reason the Registry was corrupted.

If you cancel out of trying to open the file and look at Legacy
Help > General Information - what version is being reported?

Well, Cathy has said something that I have wanted to say for some
time. I have been on a number of genealogy lists for about ten years,
and this list has more harshness and rudeness than any list I have
ever been on. I am surprised that it is tolerated.

I think that sometimes we forget that American English is not the first
language of many subscribers to this list. The variety of Legacy users
increases spelling and grammar differences, which may be the root of
some misunderstandings. That said, there has been an uptick in whining
lately. A tad more patience would be helpful.

RE: [LegacyUG] Where to put age at death

2007-08-17 Thread Sherry/Support
June,

That's *not* what I said. My response was:

"I would not expect the option you're looking for to be in v7. I haven't
had any other requests for this and it's not on the enhancement request list
so it doesn't appear to be something that others have looked for. The
programmers aren't looking at new requests at this time either - they're
madly working to get the planned features finished for v7. Let's wait and
see what they come up with!"

When v7 is released, then the programmers will start looking at new feature
possibilities.

Thanks for using Legacy.

Re: [LegacyUG] Not a Legacy question - BUT

2007-08-17 Thread aseddon.com
Since it is often more convenient to follow a thread if the prior messages
are left on a reply and it seams to be the multiple stuff that Legacy adds
to the bottom of every e:mail that bothers people why don't Legacy add the
'dash dash space' ahead of their footer?

I know that to reduce clutter on my Legacy folder I usually delete a message
after I read it, but if a reply piques my interest it is a pain to have to
go to the archives to look for the thread.

First off, change your signature line. Precede the current stuff with a
line containing hyphen hyphen space. Most *good* email readers will
recognise this as the beginning of a signature and when someone replies
to a message of yours, truncate your signature and everything that
follows it.

Secondly, I've been trying for ages to get the old fuddy-duddys around
here to try this and also to learn to trim messages. No good. They're
all far too set in their ways. Either that or they're scared to touching

anything they don't know about.

Re: [LegacyUG] Where to put age at death

2007-08-17 Thread June McDonald
Cathy, as you will see, I said that I was very thankful for the Chronology
report. I have explored it fully for getting various views of reports from
it, but at this point it is not a report that I am after. It certainly is
better than nothing at all but it is not as helpful as having them alongside
each event, then and there as it is entered. I have had a number of
occasions where being able to see the actual age appear has made me realise
that something was wrong.

Like Mitch, Age at Death is greyed out. But at any rate, this is not exactly
what I was thinking of. I would like to include an individual's age for a
variety of events: age at marriage, immigration, and other important
milestones/achievements in a person's life. I figured sentence definition
fields would be the logical place to specify the age. I currently have a number
of people I'd like to include age info on, but worry that if I type the age in
manually and later adjust a birth or marriage date (for example), the "hard
coded" age I enter would be incorrect. It's not in the current drop-down list
of sentence definition fields, so I was curious if anyone knows if it will be
in the upgrade or has a work-around.

  Christine

Sorry to say but libraries using AACR2 (now revised) rules when
cataloguing have two treatments - Dutch names get alphabetised by
first capital letter while English names using van Helsing etc get
alphabetised by van. When I did cataloguing I had to check with the
author on which treatment to use. So not surprising that when using
Legacy its left to us to decide where and how to list our names.

Just my two cents worth.
Cheers
Tracy

RE: [LegacyUG] Favorite Legacy Tip

2007-08-17 Thread Janis Gilmore
That was definitely news to me, Renee.

My tip isn't even mine - I am thrilled with Linda Altman's idea about source
templates, and have created a number of them. In addition to census, I have
the online Missouri Death certif's, Civil War Pension files, Land Entry
files and a number of others.

I created my own version of the templates that Linda so generously shared.
But what a timesaver, and aid to keeping your sources uniform.

So - thanks again, Linda.

You didn't mention that if it's a Left-Click it goes forward, whereas
if it's a Right-Click it goes backward to the next individual. :-)

In the family view
If you have the husband or wife highlighted and then click in the middle
between them on the background it will rotate through the highlighted person's
siblings. If you click on the background to left of the husband or right of the
wife, depending on who is highlighted it will rotate through their other
spouses. If you click on the background next to the highlighted person's
parents it will rotate through any additional parents they might have.

I can't think of any more right now but I know I do a lot of right clicking on

share it with the rest of the group.

Re: [LegacyUG] making 'County' stick

2007-08-17 Thread Leon Chapman
Ok, but I think the code should be at the beginning of the file called:

  GeoStateCodes-Alt.txt

The 1st 20 or so lines will then look like this:

* ===
* Legacy GeoDB State/Province List.
*
* Comment lines can be added to this file by placing an * as the first
character.
*
* Special characters + and - mark state/province names to use:
*+ = Marks the preferred name to use for a state/province.
*- = Marks the abbreviated (short) state/province name to use.
*Note: If a state/province doesn't have a - or a - entry we
* use the default name on the left.
* Leading and trailing spaces are removed from all items.
*
*If I wanted to use Alaska for the long state name then I wouldn't
*have to make an entry with a - next to it since that would be the
*default. If I wanted to use the two letter code of AK for my
*long state name for Alaska I'd have a line that looked like:
*
*USA|Alaska|-AK
*
*If I want to use AK for the short version of Alaska then I would
*add a line to this file that looks like:
*
*USA|Alaska|-AK
*
*
* Start of State/Province Name Variation List
* ===
*
* United States

* United States
*
* add County to the end of the county field for Long Locations being
*returned

RE: [LegacyUG] Where to put age at death

2007-08-17 Thread Christine Pearce
Like Mitch, Age at Death is greyed out. But at any rate, this is not exactly
what I was thinking of. I would like to include an individual's age for a
variety of events: age at marriage, immigration, and other important
milestones/achievements in a person's life. I figured sentence definition
fields would be the logical place to specify the age. I currently have a
number of people I'd like to include age info on, but worry that if I type
the age in manually and later adjust a birth or marriage date (for example),
the "hard coded" age I enter would be incorrect. It's not in the current
drop-down list of sentence definition fields, so I was curious if anyone
knows if it will be in the upgrade or has a work-around.

The problem is that the email doesn't come in from LUG, it comes in
from each person's personal email address. I am guessing that is why
when new people send an email, it goes right into the spam folder.
GMAIL hasn't read their email addresses before.

I have to say that it would save a lot more trees if you did not print
the messages. May I ask why you need to do so?

I am constantly reading requests from people as to how to do something
in Outlook and the answer given so very often is "Get a decent mail/news

reader." I know this is not terribly helpful and must be annoying.
However, one of the many, many, many reasons why I love my e-mail client

(Turnpike) is that I can print any part of a message just by
highlighting the section I want before clicking the print button, which
I don't think works in Outlook. (It certainly doesn't in Outlook
Express.)

I'm afraid it's probably something you will just have to put up with.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Support Help Needed

2007-08-17 Thread Hugh Busey
Jim and Sherry,

I too use gmail and for the most part like it. I have found that it has a
pretty effective spam filter so every once in a while I have to go rescue
some responses from commercial companies that gmail thinks might be spam. I
just tell it it's not spam and thereafter they get right through.

I had several from Sherry come right through this week. Good luck.

2007-08-17 Thread myrna20
Hi Leon,

ps, sorry bout the HTML. My address for the list is set to
send plain text. I told you my 'senior moments' were at work
today. Sometimes I cheat and do a "reply" to someone else's
message and then change the subject. Guess I better stop doing
that or pay more attention to the message I am about to "steal",
hadn't I???

Thanks for the info on changing the geo codes. I will do that.
I think I will wait until tomorrow - maybe a good nights sleep
will help. And the change is to be done on the States and not
County?

Thanks again,

Myrna

This group is already in my list of contacts and I'm still getting a
lot of LUG mail going to my SPAM folder. I'm just checking it two or
three times a day and dealing with it that way.

Re: [LegacyUG] Test

2007-08-17 Thread Cricket Hackmann
I have LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com in my gmail Contact List, and I
still get about 20-25% of my LUG messages sent automatically to the Spam
folder. I've even set up a filter to give the LUG messages their own
"label," but that isn't enough of a clue to gmail. I'd sure like to figure
this outI'm getting tired of having to fish LUG messages out of the spam
folder every time I check my e-mail.

Re: [LegacyUG] Alphabetizing Names

2007-08-17 Thread SKL 1750
I'm sorry, but we are all llisted under D, not under B. "Bruyne, de" looks just
wrong, and so does a listing:
Bruyne
Debruyne
Buysse

All I meant was that how people spell them and how people _regard_ their
surnames is personal. And I firmly believe that your correct name and spelling
is what you believe it is.

Personally, I also find Legacy fine with the current sorting, and rather have
the change introduced as an option that can be turned on and off.

greetings,
n

Its not "all Personal"

Look in the Dutch phonebook. Sorting is without "de" , "van de", "van" aso.
Thats just the reason why the translation teams strongly request this type of
sorting. Look for instance at Brothers Keeper which has this feature for years.

Hello all,

I think it's all personal. You have to accept that no matter how you sort it,
you'll never have them all together, because some people divide the suffix and
others don't. My mother-in-law is Vande Walle, her brother's family are all Van
De Walles, while their father was Vandewalle. My husband and I chose to write
our name Debruyne, while my sister-in-law writes 'De Bruyne'. In that respect,
it's better to use all parts of the surname because they will be listed in
closer proximity on your list than if the 'prefixes' were divided. Same goes
with the capitalisation of the particle -- it has become optional.

Keep in mind that you'll not capture the ones that have dropped the 'van'
altogether: for example, the Van Maeles may have become simply the Maeles (or
the other way round).

Regards,
nina

How do Europeans typically sort...with or without the de's, von's, etc?

Re: [LegacyUG] making 'County' stick

2007-08-17 Thread Leon Chapman
Myrna:

Here are the code names that appear in file:
 GeoExtraCodes.txt

* APPLY TO SELECTED LOCATION
* ==
* When a user selects a location in a specific country, Legacy can
* perform the following commands when assembling the parts
*110 = (not functional at this time. we didn't think it would be used.)
*111 = Add this text to the end of the Long County field.
*112 = Add this text to the end of the Long State field.
*113 = Add this text to the end of the Long Country field.
*
*114 = (not functional at this time. we didn't think it would be used.)
*115 = Add this text to the end of the Short County field.
*116 = Add this text to the end of the Short State field.
*117 = Add this text to the end of the Short Country field.
*
*120 = (not functional at this time. we didn't think it would be used.)
*121 = Remove this text from the end of the Long County field.
*122 = Remove this text from the end of the Long State field.
*123 = (not functional at this time. we didn't think it would be used.)
*
*124 = (not functional at this time. we didn't think it would be used.)
*125 = Remove this text from the end of the Short County field.
*126 = Remove this text from the end of the Short State field.
*127 = (not functional at this time. we didn't think it would be used.)
* ==

I have created the following Alt files.
GeoCountryCodes.txt
GeoCountyCodes.txt
GeoExtraCodes.txt
GeoStateCodes.txt

You should keep your original files above and don't change them -
leave them in the C:\Legacy\ directory as is.

Create your new files by editing and saving a new version of each of
the above files in the same directory: C:\Legacy\

GeoCountryCodes-Alt.txt
GeoCountyCodes-Alt.txt
GeoExtraCodes-Alt.txt
GeoStateCodes-Alt.txt

I think I have only changed the GeoStateCodes.txt file, but have
...Alt.txt files for each one anyway. I believe the way Legacy works
is that if an ...Alt.txt file exists, then it uses that file otherwise
it uses the default one without the Alt.

By keeping the original files, you can always go back to the default
version if you don't like the new way of adding Co or Co. or County at
the end of the County field or whatever.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Support Help Needed

2007-08-17 Thread Mary Young
Messages sent from gmail to Lists go into Sent mail. They don't show
up until someone replies. Then the new thread appears in your Inbox.
If you want the Sent message to show straight away, you can cc to
yourself. But you end up with the duplicated message at the start of
the thread.
Relax - 99% of the time, your message did get through!

FYI: I have never found a setting for that, it is just something we
GMAIL users have to get used to. When we get a reply, or we reply to
another message and don't change the subject, our sent email shows up

Re: [LegacyUG] making 'County' stick

2007-08-17 Thread Leon Chapman
Myrna:

Just a note:
The list standard is for everyone to use plain text and not HTML email
like you have submitted to the list.

Answer to you question:
Add the following text in from on the USA Geo State information in the
file called GeoStateCodes.txt and then save the file with a new name
of:
GeoStateCodes-Alt.txt

You will note below the code: USA|111| Co adds county to end of long
county field.
A * at the beginning of a line indicates the line is a comment.

* ---
* United States
*
* add County to the end of the county field for Long Locations being
*returned
USA|111| Co
* add Co. to the end of the county field for Short Locations being returned
* USA|115| Co
* add USA to the end of the country field for Short Locations being returned
USA|117| USA

* ---

So, in the example above, I have added Co to long county names and USA
to end of short location of country fields.

Hope this helps.

Also, in British phone books, both Mac an Mc sort together.

So both McBeth and MacBeth would appear together,
sorted within by the alphabetical order of the initials of, or full, forenames.

Surely, as long as the user knows whether such
prefixes as VON, VAN, DE, DE LA, Mc, Mac, etc are
included or excluded he will go to the right place

Then again, the Irish use O' too as a prefix.

Also what does one do with the prefix Fitz - son of?

Is Fitzroy the same as Fitz Roy?

The Welsh were sensible, the prefix is now part
of the surname, even if a consonant change occurred.

Ab or Ap also equals "son of" - so Ap Reece
became Preece, Ap Richard became Prichard, Ap Hugh became Pugh, etc

The Slavs were "sensible" the -ski was a suffix so does not affect sort orders

So, my thoughts are, as long as the sort order is
defined by the software writer in the Help File,
then I am sanguine and happy, too

[LegacyUG] FW: [LegacyUG] Citation Style - Elizabeth Shown Mills' n ew book

2007-08-17 Thread David Wild
Hi Lug members,

I also purchased the hard-copy of Elizabeth Shown Mills' new book. and also
downloaded the e-book version for easy referencing.

If you go to footnote.com you will find that you can now purchase the e-book
for $24.95 instead of $29! It's a relatively small download for such a large
book - so you won't have to worry about it "hogging" lots of hard-drive
space.

Well said, Denise.

Elizabeth Shown Mills' new book, is available as a pdf download, for $29. I
have the book on my shelf already, but immediately downloaded it when I
heard it was available in that form. It makes it really easy to enter a
search term ("land entry" or whatever) and go directly to the section of the
book that is applicable. It can be found at
http://www.footnote.com/evidenceexplained.php (and other places, probably).
Very handy to have it right in my laptop.

I have focused for the past two or three months on cleaning up my sources,
and putting them in publishable form. I have converted from being a "lumper"
to being a "splitter." I had been guilty in the past of taking shortcuts;
for instance, sourcing a book, and omitting the fact that I viewed it at an
online source.

I started by working my way back from my parents, taking one direct ancestor
at a time, and printing their chronology, with sourcing, to pdf. As I review
each source, I go to the original document or digital file and source it
properly. I frequently reprint the chronology and sources to pdf until I am
satisfied that they look exactly as I want them to, and they conform to the
Elizabeth Shown Mills standard. Then I move on to the next direct ancestor.

It is an enormous undertaking, even though my database contains fewer than
4,000 individuals. But satisfying to see the results.

Janis, in sunny Seattle

Hello All,

I have been following the discussion on sourcing citations with great
interest. It seems that E.S. Mills' new book has inspired people to think
about updating their Legacy citations to match her style guide. Some people
want to wait, some are revising sources, some are using their own personal
systems.

RE: [LegacyUG] Test

2007-08-17 Thread Paul A.
Mitch,

There was discussion a couple days ago about gmail suddenly "spamming" the
LUG messages. When I checked, I had 109 LUG messages in the spam folder. I
would read a reply and think my memory was really bad because I couldn't
remember the original question or comment being posted. I found them. I
have always had one or two here and there, but then I read in the help where
you need to include the email address in your list of contacts to prevent
them from going to the spam. Now I am back to just one or two a day going
into the spam folder.

If I'm not mistaken... the "de", "von", "van" are part of the
surname and should be treated as such (despite the fact that the
translation is as simple as "of".

If a person is named Wilhelm Von Friesburg - his surname is Von

Friesburg... Friesburg (supposition) is the name of the place his
ancestor originally came from.

But then... this debate could be similar to how one loads toilet

[LegacyUG] making 'County' stick

2007-08-17 Thread myrna20
Hello Listers,
A while back there were instructions on how to make the word 'County' stick
to the geo information. I have just been to the archives and cannot find it.
Also checked the tips but did not find it there either. I am really having
'senior moments' today. Can someone please tell me again how to do this so I
don't have to keep typing it in. Don't know why I did not do it when we were
talking about it - probably had another senior moment!
Thanks,
Myrna

Re: [LegacyUG] Alphabetizing Names

2007-08-17 Thread Bert van Kootwijk

  Regards,
  nina

RE: [LegacyUG] Citation Style

2007-08-17 Thread Denise Levenick
Janis,

I am glad to hear about the online version of Mills' book; the computer does
make searches much easier. And I like your strategy for cleaning up your
source file. Legacy makes it easier, but there is still a lot of hard work
there. I am going to try your method on my own files. It is a good idea to
print out as you go, I see, and make adjustments as necessary.

Dawn,

You wrote "I'm looking forward to the templates in Legacy 7 to bring this
task into a more desirable realm. Filling in blanks is easier than using a
blank screen.

Will Legacy 7 have slots for online documentation? That will be a big help !
And thanks for the kind words about teaching sourcing. Sometimes I think it
is an uphill battle, but I press on.

There are now online sites where students can type in their citation
information and receive in return a full-formatted correct Works Cited page
in whatever style they specify. Wouldn't it be "way cool" if some
programmer-type who knows genealogy could do that for Mills' format? Check
out easybib.com. Then we could double-check to see if our sources are
correct.

Denise

RE: [LegacyUG] Citation Style

2007-08-17 Thread Janis Gilmore
Well said, Denise.

Elizabeth Shown Mills' new book, is available as a pdf download, for $29. I
have the book on my shelf already, but immediately downloaded it when I
heard it was available in that form. It makes it really easy to enter a
search term ("land entry" or whatever) and go directly to the section of the
book that is applicable. It can be found at
http://www.footnote.com/evidenceexplained.php (and other places, probably).
Very handy to have it right in my laptop.

I have focused for the past two or three months on cleaning up my sources,
and putting them in publishable form. I have converted from being a "lumper"
to being a "splitter." I had been guilty in the past of taking shortcuts;
for instance, sourcing a book, and omitting the fact that I viewed it at an
online source.

Some people
want to wait, some are revising sources, some are using their own personal
systems.

[LegacyUG] Search Wizard

2007-08-17 Thread Heather Stovold
Just got started today (it has been a crazy week) - I'm still running
the search wizard to find my databases. I know it says it will take several
minutes (and believe me, it is) - just wondering - it is currently
searching all my temporary internet files. Couldn't it skip those
directories? I would certainly hope that nobody would have their genealogy
there I'm on XP, and have 4 or 5 profiles, that various people use -
and so we have a LOT of temporary internet files It has been doing the
search for a long time now.

And for me, if I could have selected the drive to search, it would have been
quicker (but then, I probably would have just skipped the search - but
there is something I'm testing to see if it finds)

This may be correct in some countries, but in most European countries the

If I'm not mistaken... the "de", "von", "van" are part of the surname and
should be treated as such (despite the fact that the translation is as simple
as "of".

If a person is named Wilhelm Von Friesburg - his surname is Von Friesburg...
Friesburg (supposition) is the name of the place his ancestor originally came
from.

But then... this debate could be similar to how one loads toilet paper onto
the holder - it's up to the individual.

Re: [LegacyUG] Soliciting Opinions

2007-08-17 Thread Heather Stovold
And as a software developer (not of Legacy) I have another point.

I used to work on manufacturing software. One day, while working on a new
feature in one of our software packages, I discovered a gigantic bug in
another programmer's work. I realized immediately, that the bug could,
under the right conditions, cause a piece of machinery to turn on for a
microsecond when it shouldn't possibly repeatedly. The conditions were
fairly rare - but depending on what was turned on, and what the process was,
it could be dangerous (maybe even fatal if there was a person.)The bug
had been in the software for at least a year, and nobody had reported the
issue.

I immediately fixed the program, and we put out a patch. The bug fix
description fully indicated the problem, and the patch was marked as a
required, urgent patch.

1 year or 2 later, a customer support agent came running up to talk to us.
Our most major client on that project had just had one of their
manufacturing chambers BLOW UP. (1 room, no people in it, no injuries or
anything.) I had the customer support agent have them check which patches
were installed. and yup - they had NOT installed the patch. (The
client did appologize for getting angry with us when we pointed out the
patch notice and description.) Some plants were shy to install patches
because of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" feeling - which I can
understand in manufacturing it is just, sometimes you don't realize
it is broke until catastrophe occurs!

So, I generally apply patches pretty quick, realizing that new bugs might be
introduced too. I try to get a feeling for what is fixed, and I try to get
a feel what people are saying - I make backups, and re-install. I generally
have an install file of an earlier version (maybe not the more recent
one it depends) in case something comes up that is going to greatly
affect me

Re: [LegacyUG] Alphabetizing Names

2007-08-17 Thread TaylorResearch4u
If I'm not mistaken... the "de", "von", "van" are part of the surname and
should be treated as such (despite the fact that the translation is as simple
as
 "of".

If a person is named Wilhelm Von Friesburg - his surname is Von Friesburg...
Friesburg (supposition) is the name of the place his ancestor originally
came from.

But then... this debate could be similar to how one loads toilet paper onto
the holder - it's up to the individual.

Re: Re: [LegacyUG] Citation Style

2007-08-17 Thread Dawn Crowley
Wow! A high school that teaches documentation of sources! I AM
impressed. That skillset has dropped from the curriculum of many
schools. As a result, I find three trains of thought when I cover
documenting in genealogy classes: 1) those who document in some fashion;
2) those who understand its importance, want to do it, but are
frustrated at figuring out just how to do it, so they do little, if any
source documentation; and 3) those who don't want to go to the trouble
and don't grasp the need to document personal research that they don't
plan to share. Unlike school or employment, there is often no
interested external party in documenting family history. This often
yields a mental block to the mere idea of doing what is perceived as
exraneous work to enjoy a hobby. I'm looking forward to the templates
in Legacy 7 to bring this task into a more desirable realm. Filling in
blanks is easier than using a blank screen.

some are using their own personal systems.

A few thoughts…

This situation is similar to one I deal with every year in my high
school English classroom. We teach the MLA (Modern Language
Association) format for citing sources. This is used in colleges
and universities for literature papers so it is appropriate to
teach this in the high school English classroom. I always tell
students that in college they will use MLA for English papers, but
different style guides in different disciplines – Chicago Style
for history; APA (American Psychological Assoc) for social
sciences, etc. I also tell them that what them may not, must not,
cannot do is invent their own system.

So many students want to use a style that their parents told them
was "correct." I have a hard time convincing them that it is not
appropriate to used numbered sources in a literary paper. We work
very hard to come up with the correct citation format for whatever
form of source is used – book, journal, web page, listserve, etc.
Citation formatting is a bit like a solving a puzzle, it takes
some noodling, but it can be done

It seems to me that the field of Genealogy is another discipline,
and as such the general body of genealogists and the great
Genealogy Associations have pretty much decided that Mills' books
are the Official Style Guide for the discipline. Therefore, it
would be well for anyone publishing in that field to use Mills'
citation formats. For many, however, who will not formally
publish, all that is necessary is that the information be present
in a clear and correct form. Legacy gives all the options for
recording this information. If the work is formally published, at
that time, the sources (even if there are zillions) can be
formatted to Mills' style.

I have Mills' first book Evidence and have not seen the new one. I
hope it settles some of the style issues that have come up on this
list such as acceptable style for County (Co.; County; Cty), etc.
If not, I will offer a tip we use for the school newspaper –
develop a Style Guide for your own use. We have one that lists
items such as, always spell out the name of the school in full; do
not abbreviate department with Dept.; capitalize the name of
departments…etc. For myself, I am always forgetting my own
"rules," so I find this to be very helpful.

I hope I have not offended anyone with my comments here; I do
enjoy the interchange of ideas on this list.

With Legacy closed, go to the Legacy folder on your hard drive. Delete the
RptProbs.usr and the ProbsList.usr files. Then go to the c:\Legacy\Data
folder and delete the PPL file that has the same name as your Family File.
You should be able to create the report with no problem.

Thanks for using Legacy.

Report
Importance: High

I am a new user (Version 6.0.0.155) and have never been unable to create a
Problem Report. Every time I try, Legacy stops responding and the programme
shuts down. Sometimes the status bar stops at points other than 100%
complete and stops responding, and other times the status bar gets to 100%
complete but stops responding when I press Preview.

I have tried File Maintenance (no problems found), reinstalling Legacy,
cleaned the registry, reinstalled Windows XP and Legacy, and performed a
virus check (none found) - all actions were to no avail.

I am running Windows XP Version 2002 Service Pack 2. Legacy is installed on
my laptop C drive, and my files are on a network which I access via the
Desktop. Got gobs of disk space and memory on both machines. This is the
only programme that's giving me a headache.

Can someone urgently respond with suggestions?

Cheers,
Christine

You don't have to "add" or "override anything. Just go to the reports
options and check the tick box to include ages.

Hi Christine,

Where would you want to put it?

Currently you can choose to have it appear in the basic information
sentence.
eg:
Mary Ann was born on 22 Sep 1809 in Harwich, Essex, England, was
baptised on 8 Nov 1811 in St Nicholas', Harwich,
Essex, England, died in 1883 in Melbourn, Cambridgeshire, England

Melbourn, Cambridgeshire, England.

I second Maureen. I am also over 70, was programming computers in

Oh, spare us! I might be old (70+) but fuddy-duddy I'm not. Not set
in my ways and I'm not scared of much either I've been operating

After you've highlighted the part/s of the message you want to print, click
on File, click on Print, click on Selection (shown as an option at the left
in the body of the print screen) then click Print.

When you open the "Name List", type the surname in the surname box, then a
comma, and then start to type the first name that you desire. That should
go quickly...

First off, change your signature line. Precede the current stuff with a
line containing hyphen hyphen space. Most *good* email readers will
recognise this as the beginning of a signature and when someone replies
to a message of yours, truncate your signature and everything that
follows it.

RE: [LegacyUG] Where to put age at death

2007-08-17 Thread Cathy

Hi Christine,

Where would you want to put it?

Currently you can choose to have it appear in the basic information sentence.
eg:
Mary Ann was born on 22 Sep 1809 in Harwich, Essex, England, was
baptised on 8 Nov 1811 in St Nicholas', Harwich,
Essex, England, died in 1883 in Melbourn, Cambridgeshire, England
at age 74, and was buried in

Melbourn, Cambridgeshire, England.

Hi Valerie,

I only enter the age at death in the Source Detail if my source gave
the age at death.

If that's the only information I have for birth, I calculate a birth
date and use the death source as the source for birth.
I indicate that it is a calculated date by using the prefix Cal for
calculated. Others will use Abt or Est. I use Abt for vaguer source
information and Est when it is a guess based on other information.

Legacy will calculate the age at death and you can opt to include
that in Reports - perhaps only some of them. Check the Report
options. This Legacy calculated age is also shown on the Individual
Information Screen within Legacy at the end of the Death line. You can
choose to add an Age at Death column on the Index View.
