RE: [LegacyUG] attaching .pdf files instead of photo

2007-09-14 Thread ronald ferguson

Pat,

Broadly speaking your procedure seems to be correct. Where the pdf file is
does, of course, depend on where you have put it - which may not be in All
Files, but as long as you find it in the panel on Legacy that doesn't
matter.

If you cannot get it to work using sound then you may like to try using
video as both/either should work. The picture of the sound icon only
indicates that the pdf has not been recognised. If neither work (or in any
event) you may like to try using FileFile MaintenanceCheck/Repair.

One last thought is that there could be a problem with the pdf, do you know
how it was made (ie by which program) and does it open OK in Adobe Reader?

I am very confused. I thought we were supposed to attach a .pdf file (as
opposed to a picture) in Legacy in the following manner.

Save the .pdf to a folder.
In Legacy click on the picture iconclick on Sound
Browse to the folder that has the .pdf file
To find it, click on All files
Open it
Fill in Legacy caption info etc.
click OK

It displays a picture that says Sound!!
So how do I vision the .pdf??

Am I utterly confused?

Another question along these lines. So often, more often that not, when I

[LegacyUG] How to enter English Locations

2007-09-14 Thread The Eccles Family

This might be a question of those at are familiar with English research. I

wondering if there is a standard way (but not to rigid) way for entering
English locations. For example do I enter Walworth, Surrey as
Walworth, Surrey, UK or as Walworth, Surrey, England, UK.

[LegacyUG] To be a Lumper or a Splitter

2007-09-14 Thread The Eccles Family
Thank you to everyone for your discussions on the above topic. I have found
out a lot and it is wonderful that Legacy is so flexible that it can meet
everyone's needs although we may do things differently.
I am basicly a lumper but split sources when I feel that it is necessary.
I have been busy reading and watching the information on sourcing on the
Legacy website, also checked out what other genealogy websites had to say on
the matter.
I will soon start sorting out my sources so that they are better organised
and are more uniform in the way I enter the information.

Re: [LegacyUG] How to enter English Locations

2007-09-14 Thread John Clare
I would write Walworth, Surrey because I live in Surrey, but Walworth,
Surrey, England would be the right one I think. UK is a difficult idea since
it covers Northern Ireland from 1922, Ireland as a whole from 1807 to 1922,
and doesn't exist before then. Great Britain dates from the Act of Union
between England and Scotland in 1707, although, to be really pedantic,
Scotland was then called North Britain and England South Britain (it didn't
catch on). If you ask the average Londoner where they live it would be
England not the United Kingdom or Great Britain and I don't think there are
many people, even world wide who have heard of the United Kingdom but have
never heard of England.
Hope this helps
John Clare

I agree with that, the one to avoid is the American style of writing
Walworth, Surrey County, England or Walworth, County Surrey, England. With
a couple of exceptions (as always), the word county is not written in the

Anne,

As John says, you are correct but over here we do not use UK.

The UK comprises Great Britain and Northern Ireland (today - at one time all
Ireland)

Great Britain comprises England, Scotland and Wales.

We don't use Great Britain in addresses either, only the country in which
the place is situated. The standard location fields as used in the USA do
not work for us, even though Legacy and other programs try to force
comliance.

...and I can't be the tail that wags the dog, but I'd make a
small change to the Alternate Names box format. See below.

Before, I was working with a huge file that printed 400+ pages. So
I never paged through the whole Index. This time I tried a much smaller
file and noticed for the first time that all of my alternate names were
being dumped at the start of the Index under '(no surname).' I hadn't been
putting a surname in the Alternate Name box. I had assumed that the
alternate name box was for nicknames and that the nickname would be
naturally associated with the surname. It didn't occur to me that someone
could have an alternate surname, but now that it's been called to my
attention, I can think of an example where it could be used -- people with
hyphenated names probably want to list their surnames more than one way.

Thanks to all who replied to my query.

My 2 cents to Legacy is to re-do the Alternate Names box to
automatically insert the last name into the surname blank like you do in the

expanded to say that where appropriate I also use Scotland, Wales etc
and where I was referring to the county reorganisation I was referring
not just to England but to all constituent countries. (Although to be

Northern Irish counties since the formation of the UK.)

[LegacyUG] How to enter details of adopted children

2007-09-14 Thread Dermot McGlone
Following a few e-mails regarding how (in Legacy) to deal with adopted
children and those with more than one set of parents, I've had a look
at a few in my records. I've got one person who was given up for
adoption at birth. He is listed on ym database under his adopted
name, with the name his birth mother gave him (his first name and her
surname) listed as an AKA. This person is still alive as is his birth
mother, they have made contact about 7 years ago, but she, and the
rest of her family (which includes me!), now call him by his adopted
name rather than the name given to him at birth.

I'm just wondering how others on this list would deal with a situation
like this, i.e., which name you would list as the correct name and
which as an AKA, and the reasons why you would do this.

RE: [LegacyUG] How to enter details of adopted children

Dermot,

It rather depends on what the person (if alive) would wish. Generally I
would use the birth name as the proper name and the adopted (or step) name
as the AKA. Years ago, of course, UK adoption in the legal sense was not
common and one would see adopted kids using their birth name when on their
marriage papers.

I would have no problems doing it the other way round (and do) and in both
cases I make notes to say what the position actually is.

[LegacyUG] Trojan Attack

2007-09-14 Thread Jim Smith
I need any help and/or advice from any Legacy user who also uses the
software Clooz. (Everyone please be advised that I am a strong
proponent and user of Clooz, Legacy and Master Genealogist softwares,
and I hope to continue using the genealogy document concept in my
work.)

I have been having a problem since last Thursday that may involve my
upgrade copy of Clooz 2.1. I am not saying that the issue is with
Clooz but I think the software program is being used by a Trojan. I
have been using Clooz steadily and more increasingly since the release
of the new upgrade.

Sometime last week a repeat problem began again as I had had in the
past with the installation and configuration of Clooz 2.1. When I
initiated Legacy or The Master Genealogist, a dialog box as before,
appeared asking if I wanted to install Clooz 2.1, after it had already
been installed. After a number of repeats, I followed all previous
instructions, and removed and un-installed all traces of Clooz. I
reinstalled but no success this time. Now the problem does not go
away or is not fixed as it had been fixed in the past. This is the
secondary issue and from my understanding is an MS Windows issue with
the Clooz installation.

I next discovered that 43 incidents of a Trojan, Trojan.Daugeru, had
infected my PC. I cleaned my PC completely. I also had a
professional service examine my PC. My PC service and speed continued
to deteriorate. I ran a number of virus, spyware and malware checks
and cleaned my PC completely. I used a number of software including
Norton, SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor, CCleaner, Spybot Search, and PC
Tools to examine and clean my PC. Overkill maybe, but the Trojan was
completely removed. (FYI, Spyware Doctor, of those I used, was the
only software the caught the Trojan.Daugeru.)

In order to increase the speed of the server, as well as exclude the
interference of some of the security software, I removed two
softwares: Norton and SpySweeper. All this was done in a Safe-Mode
and the PC hard drives were defragged, each at least three times...
Overkill, possibly, but some of the actions were suggested by the
professionals. And at their suggestion, I conducted a number of the
processes as they felt that I could handle the work without having to
spend any additional funds for what would be the same service that
they would have to charge.

After having completed all process for a thorough removal and
cleansing of my PC, I reinstalled Clooz 2.1. I put the Clooz 2.1 CD
in to the drive and began the installation process. At some point
during the installation process I received 10 high-level Virus Alerts
from Spyware Doctor that the Trojan.Daugeru had attempted once again
to infect my PC. This happened twice for 20 attempts, and has
happened each time I have reinstalled Clooz 2.1. Be it coincidence,
this has happened only and every time I reinstall Clooz 2.1, something
that did not happen prior to the appearance of the Trojan.Daugeru.

I knew it couldn't be from the Clooz 2.1 CD as I had already installed
and used the program since it was first published. I was just
wondering, as the coincidence of the attacks seem to somehow target
Clooz, and that the trojan is relatively new, that there may have been
another Clooz user having had the same issue(s).

Once all was done, I spoke too soon about any not having any further
problems with my Clooz file and the effects of the Trojan. I decided
to start working again inputting data and new Sources in my Legacy and
Clooz database. As I checked my existent database of 264 Sources,
there appears to be a major screw-up. It looks like Source Titles
have been changed and in some cases deleted. It appears that parts of
the titles have been deleted and changed. I always use an
individual's name in the Source Title, and a good percentage of the
names are gone.

For example, my Personal File # DSCO 001 should be linked to Source
Title Robertson, Thomas 1861 - Statutory Deaths (The Document data
input screen appears to be okay.) When I look up the Document input
screen in Sources, the Sources Title has been changed to read
Certified Copy of An Entry of Birth Given at The General Register
Office The Repository has also been changed from Scotland to
England. And these types of errors and changes have be repeated
randomly throughout my 264 entered Sources.

This is a wicked Trojan, and I don't even know where to begin to start
to fix the work I had done. My Carbonite remote backup is of no help
as a copy of the garbled database was made without my knowledge that
the database had been compromised.

Am I alone in this experience? Has any one come across a similar
experience? Do you have any idea of a resolution to my issue Clooz
2.1 reinstallation issue? As a further note, the same Clooz 2.1
reinstallation issue and dialog box continues to appear when I start
up either Legacy or Master Genealogist.

Re: [LegacyUG] How to enter details of adopted children

2007-09-14 Thread Sara Binkley Tarpley
I am the adoptive mother of a child born in Guatemala to parents who
were unknown to anyone, including the Guatemalan courts. My child's
birth name was given to him by the court system and is not his legal
name now. Why would I use it at all although I see no harm in putting
it in an AKA or in notes? When we adopted our son, the Guatemalan
adoption decree changed his name to his Spanish given names with my
surname and my husband's surname shown as his last name in the
Hispanic fashion. That became his legal name. However, he used the
given names we gave him plus just our surname until this began to
cause problems with working, getting a driver's license, etc. At that
time we did a legal name change.

However, our son's situation is atypical. In domestic adoptions a new
birth certificate is issued, showing the name given to the child by
his adoptive parents and showing them as the parents. Legally the
original name is irrelevant.

I know that genealogists focused on blood lines find this hard to
understand. Actually it is possible to change a child's birth date as
well. This is sometimes done with internationally adopted children
who are delayed developmentally because of early deprivation. Just as
the name can be changed, so can the birth date. In addition, there
are internationally adopted children whose exact ages are not known
and for whom a date of birth must be assigned.

I think that there are many in the adoption community who would be
offended by the birth name being shown as the primary or real name.
Practically and legally, it is the adoptive name that counts.

 Regards,

 Dermot.

Mary,

There is no way I would ever use UK - even to suit Legacy! We are either
British, English, Irish, Scottish or Welsh. I cannot possibly imagine being
United Kingdomish. In Legacy I only use the constituent countries of The
Union. ( I think. however, that my brother-in-law uses UK but only in
order to fit in with Legacy)

I think you must have added URL as I don't have that in my list of
Events, but I do have Travel.

I'm not really sure how Gedcoms and the Customise option work, but I
have just run a test on my file. I created an Event named URL, entered
a URL, attached it to an individual with a URL as the Description and
then exported that individual as a Gedcom. Looking at the Options lists
I did not see URL listed in either list.

I then viewed the Gedcom in Notepad and the URL Event was there.

You haven't got Events ticked off to be EXCLUDED from the Gedcom have
you?

How are you viewing the Gedcom to ascertain that your URL event has not
been included? I sent a Gedcom to someone who uses PAF and they found
that my Census details which were in Event Notes were included in the
Notes field of PAF, quite separate from the Census Events which they
were part of. So if you are looking at the Gedcom after import into
another program maybe the URL is misplaced.

RE: [LegacyUG] How to enter details of adopted children

2007-09-14 Thread Linda Altman

In my situation, I am the biological mother of my daughter however my
husband is her legally adoptive father. Her birth certificate was changed to
show my current husband as her father. The biological father has no rights
in this matter. Court records are sealed and cannot be opened easily. Only
the parties initially named in the adoption proceedings and any attorneys
representing them can access these records. As far as Legacy and reporting
goes, we go by her legal name, not her birth name. Those researching
bloodlines may disagree, but her biological paternal family are total
strangers to her. The only reason they would need to be listed is if there
were medical or genetic issues that arise. Other than that, there is no need

Paul,

Well, I guess that's why there are lots of different devices and for that
matter, lots of different genealogy programs. Everyone has their
preferences. I personally don't like the Palm Operating system which is
why 8 years ago when I wrote Pocket Genealogist I picked Windows Mobile over
Palm. (Even though I had people call me an idiot since Palms at that time
had a HUGE market lead over PocketPC's... my how times have changed!)

You may also have had a fairly early Dell which compared to new devices
(PocketPC or Palm) might seem pretty clunky. (Devices get incrementally
better every year!)Also, you just may prefer the Palm Operating system
'user interface' better than Windows Mobile, some people do.

But one thing we definitely agree on, Pocket Genealogist IS the most
advanced genealogy program for any type of handheld! :-)

I had a DELL Axim with Pocket Genealogist. I now have a Palm TX with

However, I don't like the Gedstar Pro compared to Pocket Genealogist. I
would still use my Axim just for that reason if it hadn't wore out. lol

Regards,

Dermot.

[LegacyUG] Parent listing

2007-09-14 Thread Tracy Skegg
Hi listers,
I've been following the adoption thread and find the way to list
parents interesting. My cousin was adopted by friends, so I list him
in with his biological family, and with adoptive parents.

I have a friend who used donor sperm for her twins, there was another
participant/parent but it will never be known. I'm sure there are
many other examples of where one or two of the biological parent/s are
just not going to be listed. Then there's surrogate pregnancies, I
don't have any surrogate pregnancies in my file, but I wouldn't be
surprised if it happened. Tricky stuff for those who list DNA. In
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures a child is often passed
over to a sibling or cousin, sometimes grandparent to raise. That
child then has more than one set of parents, but one set of biological
parents. I don't have the answers for these issues, but it will be
interesting to see what Legacy 7 and other software will come up with
to keep up with society's trends.
Cheers

Re: [LegacyUG] Parent listing

2007-09-14 Thread ETM
I've never cared what the genealogy programs did
because they have had to deal with purists who
want blood lines. There are many adoptions in my
family, my big brother is adopted. So I long
ago made a decision that my genealogy would be
family tree, not blood lines.

Parents and children are parents and children. My
single niece has adopted two mixed race children
in the last five years, another niece and her
husband adopted a child from Russia. There are a
number of second marriages where spouses have
adopted the bio child of their spouse. They are
all listed in the family tree. I emphasize to
family that my research is a family tree. If
someone wants blood lineage they will have to do
the work themselves.

Maybe one day a program will offer a switch and
we will be able to choose one or the other, blood
or family. It would be nice. I'm not holding my
breath.

Have you plugged in any devices or accessed files in ANY other medium as
part of your attempt to reinstall Clooz -floppy, flash drive, home burned
CD?

Along with turning off System Restore and disconnecting from the Internet,
if the PC is getting thoroughly cleaned and it is coming back then there
must be a reservoir somewhere. Scanning the external media would be a start.

Since you are apparently using Carbonite and should have backups of other
important data, if you can't knock this you might have to consider
reformatting and starting over. (Be sure to save Favorites, email,

Subject: [LegacyUG] Trojan Attack
