Hi Mike,

As you say - you bring them into the one family file - then you merge them.
There's just another way of getting them there apart from the File >
Import - you can drag and drop them in using Split Screen View.

RE: [LegacyUG] District of Columbia

2008-01-26 Thread ronald ferguson

Rich,

As it happens I do put the full address in the Location List but I also use the
location "as it was". This does not change anything I have written. In 1066
William, the Duke of Normandy (France) took the English throne but we did not
as a result become part of Normandy, similarly the countries which comprised
our empire were never part of the UK, GB, or England, only overseas territories.

Even when the Romans invaded and took control of England and Wales, whilst we
were part of the Roman Empire our location was not England, Rome. Had it not
been for the fact that part of The Virgin Islands' official name is The British
Virgin Islands then I would not include "British" in the location. No different
to British Columbia.

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7 'Stradonitz numbering system'

2008-01-26 Thread Bill Bienia
Legacy uses the Sosa-Stradonitz (aka Ahnentafel) numbering system within a
single Pedigree Chart, but does not extend this numbering beyond one chart.
They use a "modified Sosa-Stradonitz" where any ancestor can be found by a
"chart #: Sosa-Stradonitz #" number, such as 3:16, which represents chart
#3, Ancestor #16. In a pure Sosa-Stradonitz numbering scheme, using
5-generation charts, the paternal 11 times great grandfather in 5th
generation on the 3rd page would be something like 16,384. The 15th GGF (the
5th generation on the 4th chart) would be 262,144, and the 19th GGF (the 5th
generation on the 5th chart) would be 4,194,304. As you can see these
numbers quickly become huge, (too impractical to remember) and would be so
big by the 250th generation (that Legacy supports) that it would take
several pages just to print the number for one person - forget about the
details like names, birth, death and marriage dates and places and other
people, hence the modified system. Note: The modified system does not have a
formal name, not even "modified Sosa-Stradonitz". Also, this system is also
well suited to pre-printed and pre-numbered ancestral (or pedigree) charts.

Another flaw, if you can call it that, is that these number assignments to
individuals are only valid for a particular anchor person. For all the
relatives to refer to any person by the Sosa-Stradonitz number, they must
always be using the same common anchor person (person #1.) For any
particular family, these numbers would only be common for a set of siblings.

[LegacyUG] Problem with buttons

2008-01-26 Thread Jenny MacKay

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me here. I seem to be having a problem
with my display buttons. I'm using Legacy 6. When I open an individual
to change details or add an event, the save, cancel buttons etc are not
displayed. This also happens when I want to exit and the backup etc
buttons are not visible. I have to run my cursor over them, and
carefully click and hold so they don't activate to see which is the one
I'm wanting to use. They seem to stay there then. Not sure if this makes
sense, but it's frustrating not being able to see them. I've tried
checking out the options and changing my monitor settings, to no avail.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks heaps.

Re: [LegacyUG] Problem with duplicates in different generations

2008-01-26 Thread Rob Vader
Ronald,

I have put the information on following URL:

http://www.rvader.nl/Vader/Database/test/vader-jans/

If you go to person 2440 (Huibrecht Leendert Vader, 12th generation):

http://www.rvader.nl/Vader/Database/test/vader-jans/d12.htm#i7

You can see the note on duplicate line with link to person 1597 in the
11th generation. However, this link is not working at all and if you
hover on the link you will see it points to generation 12which has
no person with the number 1597. In 11th generation there is a person
with that number.

That's not strictly true :-) There's always the option to Drag And Drop
from one file to another. Damn! Now I've probably confused Joseph even
more. Still, there's always the on-line Help and the tips on the website

Not sure what you mean? Are you looking at the

[LegacyUG] Error creating CD to share

2008-01-26 Thread Donna Mc R
Hello

I have searched in Archives but have not found a current answer to my problem.

I am using 6.0.0.179. I have used Legacy for years, but today I am trying to
create a CD to share that includes my family file to run on someone else's
computer.

I press the Create CD button, but I get an error saying:

Could not run the executable file "Not found\Passage.exe" from Legacy

Help! What do I do?

Thank you in advance---

[LegacyUG] Publishing to the Web with Legacy

2008-01-26 Thread George Davidson

Attn Barbara Ford and those who have yet to publish to the
web.

FYI only, I have just published several family tree lines
using Legacy 6.0. I did not use Legacy for my HOME page,
however, the links to the

Various family lines/trees are all done with Legacy. You
may view the Legacy pages by clicking on the various family
surnames listed on the

Home page: www.genealogyfamilytrees.com

Note: Legacy allows you to import your photos into the
website. You may click on the individual photos to view a
larger version.

Legacy gives you several format options for colors, lines,
bullets, etc on your family tree pages. Nothing fancy but
fairly nice to look and read.

Sincerely,

Re: [LegacyUG] Error creating CD to share

2008-01-26 Thread Donald Bova
Donna

If you do not find a solution that works within
Legacy, you may consider the following, provided you
have a cd burner program such as Roxio. There are
others.

1. Create your web pages in a folder with a name of
your choice on your hard drive. Example: JonesChart

2. Using your CD burner software, burn the folder and
contents of your web page folder to the CD.

3. When you make the label for the CD put the
instruction for the user to point their browser to
their CD drive to the path on the CD that ends at the
index.htm file. Example:

D:\JonesChart\index.htm

When the user does this then the user will start the
web pages.

Isn't genealogy fun!

From http://legacynews.typepad.com/legacy_news/2006/11/create_a_sharea.html

Instructions

1) To create your CD, first open Legacy. Then click on the Create CD button in the main toolbar.
(Make sure you have installed Legacy's latest update.) If you have not yet downloaded our free
Create CD software (which is a special, free edition of our add-on software, Passage Express),
Legacy will prompt you to first download and install it.

2) Next, decide if you want to include the entire Legacy family file, or create a subset of it. If
you are creating a CD for the wife's side of the family, then select the "Create a Subset" option
where you can then specify to only include her side.

3) Follow the steps to give your project a title, an author, and decide what you want to include on
the CD.

4) Once the CD is designed, click on the Test Project link to see what the CD will actually look
like when your family member inserts it into their computer.

5) When you are satisfied, click on the Publish button.

Just like that, you've created a family heirloom!

If you want to really customize the CD and pick from other layouts and designs, the deluxe edition
of the CD-creation software, Passage Express, is also available. Learn more about it here.

If that doesn't work you need to contact support.

I may be dense, but I'm not sure how creating webpages figures into this. I
am simply trying to create a CD to share, but when I press the Create CD
button on the toolbar, I get an error message that tells me I don't have
passage.exe. I am doing a search for the file passage.exe, and surely
enough, I do not have the file passage.exe. So I don't know how to get the
free version of this to correct the error.

After I press the Create CD button, I am asked if I want to create the whole
file or a subset on the CD. However I answer that question, then I get the
error message about not finding passage.exe.

I'm not sure your answer applies to my problem, but maybe it does and I just
don't recognize that.

Nope. That's pretty well how it goes. It will scan your entire
database putting up comparisons that you have to make choices about.
It's not a rocket-scientist, just a computer. If you know it's not a
duplicate, you can mark it Not a Duplicate so it doesn't come up again
the next time you run the Merge option. If you're not sure, tag the two
individuals so you can look at them more closely later. That's about
it. Just slog your way through. OR, if you're sure you only have 25 or
30 you will probably find them next to each other in the Name List. You
could find one pair at a time there and do a manual merge on them.

Re: [LegacyUG] Error creating CD to share

The Create CD feature appears to have been added to the Deluxe version in
2006.

>From the 10 Nov 2006 newsletter:

LEGACY FOR THE HOLIDAYS - THE PERFECT GIFT

Give the gift of Legacy Family Tree this holiday season. Your friends and
family have been waiting for all this:

- create over 100 reports, including calendars, books, picture trees,
timelines, and pedigree charts
- get started with genealogy research using our expert Research Guidance
system
- easily organize their tasks with Legacy's To Do List
- create shareable CDs using the "Create CD" feature (new, free feature
released in the last update)
=

The button should be there if you have the Deluxe version, since the ad
would most likely have been for the *purchased* version (not much
advertising of freebies in the newsletter during the holidays ;-)

The original "make a history CD" software was Family History CD which was
renamed Passage Express when version 2 was released (1 Aug 2005
newsletter).

I think that the version included with Legacy Deluxe would probably be
called "Passage Express Basic", as the version for sale at the Legacy site
is Passage Express Deluxe ($50US download, $55US on CD).

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7 'Stradonitz numbering system'

2008-01-26 Thread Lucy Shore

Hi Bill

Thank you so very much for the detailed answer to my query. I still wasn't
sure until I was able to generate both the Ahnentafel Chart from Legacy (I
don't know why it hadn't worked for me before or maybe I just couldn't see
the trees for the forest!) and another program which would give me a chart
using the stradonitz system. I was able to compare the numbers given
particular individuals in both -- and find them the equivalents of one
another -- I am now reassured that the current Legacy will give me what I
want.

On the other hand I was not able to find the very high numbers you
attributed to the Sosa-Stradonitz system but I suspect that the other
genealogy program also uses a modified system. Just knowing that they agree
with one another makes me perfectly happy.

Thank you once again for educating me.

Lucy

Legacy uses the Sosa-Stradonitz (aka Ahnentafel) numbering system within a
single Pedigree Chart, but does not extend this numbering beyond one
chart.

The 15th GGF
(the
5th generation on the 4th chart) would be 262,144, and the 19th GGF (the
5th

generation on the 5th chart) would be 4,194,304. As you can see these
numbers quickly become huge, (too impractical to remember) and would be so
big by the 250th generation (that Legacy supports) that it would take
several pages just to print the number for one person - forget about the
details like names, birth, death and marriage dates and places and other
people, hence the modified system. Note: The modified system does not have
a
formal name, not even "modified Sosa-Stradonitz". Also, this system is
also
well suited to pre-printed and pre-numbered ancestral (or pedigree)
charts.

Another flaw, if you can call it that, is that these number assignments to
individuals are only valid for a particular anchor person. For all the
relatives to refer to any person by the Sosa-Stradonitz number, they must
always be using the same common anchor person (person #1.) For any
particular family, these numbers would only be common for a set of
siblings.

Jim and Carol wrote

I presume you want to know how to make a search which will find all
people who are living. If that is the case, click on Search on the menu
bar, then on Find...

Now make the following selections in the first row of boxes:

Look for whom? = Individual
Where to look = Living
How to look = Equal to
What to look for = YES

Make sure the radio button for "Clear list before this search" is
selected and then click on Create List.

I cannot even see my own name and for the life of me I cannot catch on.

If you want to find yourself in your file the quickest way (if you don't
know the RIN assigned to your record) is to click on Name List, then in
the Surname box start to type your name as Surname, Forename. As you
type, the highlight will move through the records matching your typing
so will probably reach you before you finish typing!

If I haven't answered your questions, could you explain exactly what you
want to know.

Confusing why it lost all this info. As with any program there will be a

Re: [LegacyUG] Show living

2008-01-26 Thread Susan Daily
Jim,
When you or whoever created the GEDCOM, there would have been an
option to privatize the information for anyone marked Living in that
original database. You or whoever needs to go back to that original
software and start again. Look carefully under options (that is, if
the software is still running).

Keep in mind there are some volunteers here who might have the program
Generations and will take your saved Generations file and create
another GEDCOM for you and send it to you. Before accepting their
offer, you might want to "vet" them out to make sure they are
trustworthy since that can have private data. Good volunteers delete
your files after helping you.

[LegacyUG] Attaching Photos

2008-01-26 Thread jcspin
I think I’m going crazy. I was sure that within the past few days someone
wrote that they used Photoshop Elements and that the captions they attached
there transferred to the photo when attached in Legacy. I specifically
remember them saying that it did NOT work from the picture center. I gave it a
try and, since it didn’t work, I thought to go back to the original posting. I
can’t find it anywhere! If I’m not crazy, and there is someone out there who
knows what I’m talking about, will you please write again or direct me to the
correct archive?

Thanks!

Re: [LegacyUG] Attaching Photos

2008-01-26 Thread JLB
You sure you read it here? Anyway, it's true, .. information entered
(I believe it's under 'Caption') in the File Info box in Adobe Elements
will import into the Description fields of the individual photo
galleries but does not work through the Picture Center. All the other
fields, like URL, author, keywords, caption writer, etc, will not
import. In fact any IPTC (what it's called) captions will import into
Legacy but only with jpg's and uncompressed tiff's. I've written
several articles about IPTC. One that I recall that specifically talks
about import into Legacy is at
http://www3.telus.net/Jgen/2007-08-18-iptc.shtml. Since I've recently
installed a local search box on my site, you can search IPTC and it will
bring up several articles about it. Enough to keep you busy for hours.

RE: [LegacyUG] Problem with buttons

2008-01-26 Thread Jenny MacKay
Richard, is there anyway I can send you an image of what my screen looks
like? I've done the file maintenance, however that is just checking my
data. This maybe a hardware problem, however I've only noticed it with
Ver 6. I also now have a 2nd monitor running and the same problem is
showing on that one as well. I don't have this problem with any other
programs I run.

Thanks

Jenny

Not sure what you mean? Are you looking at the
"Individual's information page"? You may be having a
hardware problem, but I would need more specific info
to 'guess'. Have you run File Maintenance? It may fix
nothing, but try it anyway.
Tell me what happens.

Thanks Wendy, much appreciated for Sherry's address, I will send her the

put it out there to alert others.

Hi Jenny,

It sounds to me like you should be working directly with the support
staff at Legacy. Email Sherry at [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the
details of your problem, and she will help you.

You can take a screen shot by pressing the Prt Sc button - look on the
top row of your keyboard, to the right. Once you've done that, open a
picture editor (Paint will do fine, if you've got nothing else) and
paste the image there (). Save the file.

You can also capture just the top window open on your screen by pressing

.

DO NOT post attachments to this list, please - though I'm sure you
already know that from the way you phrased your question. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy Howard

RE: [LegacyUG] Problem with buttons

2008-01-26 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
Since I have no idea what is happening, sending to me
would not help. What version of Legacy are you using,
and have you recently updated it? You may have a
problem with your 'log in' locking out Legacy edits,
which doesn't make sense, since your other programs
work normally. Otherwise I would say it might be a
Windows problem, but that is not indicated. I can
almost guarantee that Geoff or Brian, when seeing
this, will contact you directly for the purpose of
helping you, before Tuesday California time. Since I
have a non-related message to them and expect to be
hearing from/calling to them myself, I will bring it
up. You may have had a bad download. You might want to
re-update before then. This lockout of add, save, etc.
is frustrating. I hope that helps, but do not expect
it to.
Sorry, but we WILL get it working ASAP.

RE: [LegacyUG] Attaching Photos

2008-01-26 Thread Connie
Hi Clair,
Hi Clair,
Yes... you are correct (I think :-)). But instead of finding it on the list,
where you 'might' have read it was on the Legacy website in my description
of the EZ Filing System I use...
http://legacynews.typepad.com/legacy_news/organization/index.html
In that post I did mention using Adobe Elements.
If you still have questions, please feel free to write me off list.

I think I'm going crazy. I was sure that within the past few days someone
wrote that they used Photoshop Elements and that the captions they attached
there transferred to the photo when attached in Legacy. I specifically
remember them saying that it did NOT work from the picture center. I gave
it a try and, since it didn't work, I thought to go back to the original
posting. I can't find it anywhere! If I'm not crazy, and there is someone
out there who knows what I'm talking about, will you please write again or
direct me to the correct archive?

Thanks!
