Re: [LegacyUG] Second wife won't show

2008-03-17 Thread Cathy
Is the individual (A) a spouse themselves in the Descendant Report or
a real descendant?

If they're a spouse, their other spouses won't show.

You don't have to tag anybody to run a Descendant Report.

The other thing to check, if the individual (A) is a real descendantm
is that you don't actually have two copies of him/her.

RE: [LegacyUG] Charting Print Question

2008-03-17 Thread Connie
Hi Ron,
Thanks for the reply My main concern is the size Legacy is currently
saving the chart as (as you will note the sizes I list in prior messages).
'If' the main need is to send via email or place online, then these file
sizes are just fine... but if you want to print a clear 17" x 11" (size
listed in Chart per my trial file) preferably at 300 dpi or better, it can't
be done with the file size automatically saved currently with the exception
of the pdf file option which saves at the actual size listed by Chart.
The transparency issue is only a secondary concern.

Re: [LegacyUG] private persons in Legacy Charting

2008-03-17 Thread JLB
Thank-you. I had set that right as I said in my original posting.
However, I found something else: My family file under Local
Settings/Temp. And for some reason Legacy Charting searched, found and
opened that under C-drive in the list of files, but did not show the
family file in its usual location under Legacy/Data. So I was working
with the wrong file. I have no idea how it ended up in a Temp folder
and wonder if this is something created by Legacy Charting the first
time I opened it last week? Is anyone else finding their family file in
a strange location?

I don't know what version you are running, Legacy 6 I assume. I sent a similar
question a week ago about my problem with Legacy 5 Deluxe not printing some
people in the Name Index of Descendants Report. I found that when I do not
suppress details of living people, it prints OK. If I select suppress details
of living people, many people, including myself, do not print in the Name
Index. This may be something you would want to check out in your version.

[LegacyUG] Charting Print Question

2008-03-17 Thread Connie

I've not had any replies to my posts on the Charting Beta List, so thought I
would try here... Can anyone explain what I may be doing wrong?
Connie

-
My original post the 'Chart Beta List' on Mar 8, 2008

Maybe this has been covered before and I missed it but... I've just checked
into the saving options/formats and am confused...

I created a very simple chart of 8 people (2 generations). I did not select
to use any background... Per Charting the chart size listed onscreen is 17"
x 11".

I then proceeded to save the chart in all the available formats and find
some interesting differences...

Saved as .pdf the chart size is close to what is shown in Charting; 16.471"
x 10.724" at 300 Resolution. The .pdf format also preserves transparency (as
no background was chosen within Charting).

BUT if I save in any other available format (bmp, jpeg, tiff, png, psd)
using the option to save with the lowest compression/largest file size, the
size is reduced to 1587 pixels x 1040 pixels (converts to 5.29" x 3.465" at
300 Resolution. Additionally the background is solid (white) even though
none was selected when drawing the chart and all but jpeg format allow
transparency...

Why the differences?
As a side note... clicking on the calculate button (for file size) does
nothing...

As it stands now, I can print out a chart with adequate DPI by saving as a

RE: [LegacyUG] Reports - > Pedigree Chart -> Alternate Names

2008-03-17 Thread Brian Lightfoot
I'm leaning in the direction that the ability to add Alternate Names to the
Index is desirable under certain circumstances. For example, Alternate Names
are not just spelling variations or nicknames but sometimes people go
through the legal process to completely change their birth name. In those
cases, Alternate Names might prove helpful in trying to figure out how the
son of John Stinkelbaum was named John Smith. I'm also leaning in the
direction that Legacy had similar thoughts and the option on the Index is
supposed to be there. It's just that the created Chart is flawed.

I see the situation now. I have duplicated the index,
and the check mark is ignored by the program. I do see
why having the Index reference the AKAs might be
desirable. It would not put the AKA on the Pedigree
chart part (which is 'footprint challenged'), but only
the index (plenty of room).
As a matter of practice, I personally always delete
all e-mails with HTML and/or attachments unless
pre-warned by a friend. I had a computer fried by a
worm hiding in an HTML that looked innocent, never
again.

RE: [LegacyUG] Master Location List & Internet Map

2008-03-17 Thread John Carter
Depends on where you are and how you use the maps.

If you're in the US and want to find a street less than 5 years old,
Google (first) and MapQuest (second) are the best choices. Yahoo and
MapsOnUs have a lot of maps, but do not update US maps as often as Google
or MapQuest.

MapsOnUs gives better directions than Yahoo in some areas - they are less
likely than Yahoo to send someone 10 miles out of the way when giving
directions to my house.

Re: [LegacyUG] Printing Descendant Book Reports with Second Families

2008-03-17 Thread Susan Daily
It probably won't sound so good, since it will list these children
under the first marriage, and they didn't come into the picture until
after the first wife died. So chronologically, it would look pretty
odd.

But you are right, it is an option to get them to some how print out
in the descendants report.

Hope this helps.

Go to (on the menu) - Tools/Set Relationships

Click the Clear Button - Make sure you are the person showing in the box
(click the Change button and pick yourself if you aren't), then click the
Set Relationships button.

Now you are self, and it will show the relationships of everyone to you.
(If you import a Gedcom, or a few other big changes like that, you may need
to reset it by doing this afterwards for them)

Also - if you like using the "ancestral colours" (blue for paternal
grandfather's line... green for paternal grandmother's line, etc) - you
can set that to start with you from Tools/Apply Ancester colours. I think
you might have to go into the settings to display it too.

btw - I have those both setup to start with my son - so that I see
relationships etc with my husbands line as well just a preference for
me though

Self is the current reference point for relationships. You can change the
person relationships refer to.

Select yourself as the current person, then click Tools -> Set

[LegacyUG] Starting Person

2008-03-17 Thread Christina
Hi,

I just started recently building my family in Legacy. I started with the
patriarch of the family, not myself and noticed that on the "Family" tab it
shows that he is "Self" which I assume is suppose to be me. Hmm is there
anyway to just change that to Husband, as it shows his wife under wife?

Now that I confused you.. hehe

RE: [LegacyUG] Reports - > Pedigree Chart -> Alternate Names

2008-03-17 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
I see the situation now. I have duplicated the index,
and the check mark is ignored by the program. I do see
why having the Index reference the AKAs might be
desirable. It would not put the AKA on the Pedigree
chart part (which is 'footprint challenged'), but only
the index (plenty of room).
As a matter of practice, I personally always delete
all e-mails with HTML and/or attachments unless
pre-warned by a friend. I had a computer fried by a
worm hiding in an HTML that looked innocent, never
again.

Thank you for the help. I was able to find the search and replace under Search

options were under the search button. You know what they say about "assuming."

I've just made a few tests and I find that you are (partly) right - I
hadn't noticed before that it does (usually) mention where the
correction is being made.

However, I tried looking for text in Dates-Death, Notes-Marriage, in
Citation-Details and in Citation-Text. In the first 2 cases I could
indeed see whose record contained the text I was replacing. In the
latter 2 cases there was no indication of where the Sources were used
with those Details or that Text.

The OP wanted to know how to find a certain name within a Source. It
looks as though the S & R method of finding it might depend on where the
name was written.

No I was asking for an hourglass-ish report that shows my parents
ancestors and their descendants (for at least a couple generations). A
number of the commercial sites do this and I had hoped that Legacy
Charting would as well.

Your solution only shows me as a descendant of my parents, and puts me
at the center of the chart, not at all consistent with my goals.

Thank you for your thought on it though...

Eric,

It may not exactly answer your question, but if, for example I select me
and the Bow-Tie chart it shows me at the centre and my father's
ancestors pn the left and my mother's on the right. Isn't that what you
are asking for?

What do mean exactly by "search all the columns?" FTM 2005 gives you an
Index View which is simply a list of names with birth and death dates.
By clicking on the column heads you can select which field (either Name
or Birth, not Death) the list is sorted by (only 1 sort criterion).

But, this view is just a small extra window which opens over the normal
family view and you can only search it by scanning visually down the
list for the information you want. It doesn't look as though you could
print this list.

Using MS Access or Open Office, you can utilize the following SQL query to find
marriages given any portion of the husband and/or wife names.

SELECT tblMR.IDMR, tblMR.IDIRHusb, tblMR.HusbSurname, tblMR.HusbGivenName,
tblMR.IDIRWife, tblMR.WifeSurname, tblMR.WifeGivenName
FROM tblMR
WHERE (((tblMR.IDIRHusb)<>0)
 AND ((tblMR.IDIRWife)<>0)
AND ((tblMR.HusbSurname)Like "*" & [Enter any part of Husband
Surname: ] & "*")
AND ((tblMR.HusbGivenName)Like "*" & [Enter any part of Husband Given
Name: ] & "*")
AND ((tblMR.WifeSurname) Like "*" & [Enter any part of Wife
Surname: ] & "*")
AND ((tblMR.WifeGivenName) Like "*" & [Enter any part of Wife Given
Name: ] & "*"))
ORDER BY tblMR.IDMR;

Hope this helps. Perhaps such a query will be included in v7 as it is quite
simple and could easily be augmented with tagging.

RE: [LegacyUG] Reports - > Pedigree Chart -> Alternate Names

2008-03-17 Thread Brian Lightfoot
I believe the original poster was talking about creating a Pedigree Chart
from the Reports option in Legacy, not the Pedigree tab. Go to the menu item
at the very top of the page and select "Reports" then select "Report Menu
(Charts)" (or click on the Reports icon on the toolbar). Then click on the
Pedigree tab of the various types of report options. As is typical of all
the various reports, there is another option to include an Index of names
that can appear on the report.

The problem that he was reporting was that within such an Index of names,
there is another option to include Alternate Names. Cathy reported that it
should be disabled but isn't. So if you put a check mark on the Alternate
Names option, you'd expect the created index to include Alternate names but
they never show up.

My question is why would one NOT want Alternate Names to be included on this
type of report (or for just about any type of report).

I guess if you had the chance to view the original poster's exact documents
that he attached, you would have known exactly where he was looking. Hope
that helps.

I am completely confused? I have Deluxe. When I am in
the main page:
Home-Family-Pedigree-Descendant-Chronology-Index-
Research Guidance.
and am using Pedigree, there are NO index choices
under this. It is a different sub program. Choosing
Index in the list will not affect the Pedigree one.
I can see the desire to have both names (standard and
AKA), appear your personal pedigree, but the format
for that report/screen is unchangable in that way.
IMHO, it is not a bug, but a work around would be
editting the name to be very long and include both,
then Print the pedigree report, and return the name to
the previous name.
I have been wrong before. Please be more specific if I
am not discussing the place your problem is.
Good luck

Re: [LegacyUG] Printing Descendant Book Reports with Second Families

2008-03-17 Thread Bruce Jones
Another option is to add the step children to the first marriage (as
well as to the second marriage) and indicate the Relationship to the
Mother (for the first marriage) as whatever makes sense to you..
This works for me for Family Group Sheets but I don't know if it will
print on a Descendant Book Report or Descendant Narrative..

RE: [LegacyUG] Sorting on birthdate

2008-03-17 Thread Kirsten Bowman
Valerie:

In my old version of FTM (v11) there is an Index View rather similar to
Legacy's Name List but the window only shows name plus birth and death date.
You do have the option of sorting the list by name *or* by date of birth. I
haven't used the program for years except to print charts but as I recall,
the search capability was very basic. Later versions may have improved on
that--heaven knows there have been enough of them!

BRAVO:

Yes this is exactly what I have been asking for.

I am interested in your comment about FTM. Does that mean that you could
look at the index/or whatever it was called view and search all the
columns ?
