Re: [LegacyUG] Moving Info from Ancestry to Legacy

2008-03-22 Thread Wendy Lavender
Hi Gail, you'll have to bear with me and my instructions because I've only done
it once and still not sure what I did :o)

At the home page of your Ancestry account at the top you'll see *find all your
family tree here*
Click on *here*.
Then under the tree that you want to gedcom (you might only have one) you'll
find *Manage tree*.
Click on that then you'll see *Management Tools > Export Tree*
Now this is where it gets hazey..
Click on Export Tree and it will come up (eventually) with *download gedcom*.
If you left click on this it just takes you to a page of gedcom text which is
absolutely double dutch to me BUT I found that if I RIGHT CLICKED on *Download
Gedcom* and selected *Save target as.* it enabled me to save the whole tree
as a gedcom to my computer and so then imported it into Legacy.
Hope this is what you were after.

Hi, Gail here. Thanks to all for the suggestions for moving information.
Problem is ,I still haven't figured put how to put it into a gedcom. Do I have
to do one page at a time? Or is there a way to do the whole family tree at
once.? My trees are growing and multiplying fast so I need to figure out

Not only can the cousin not copyright them herself but by extension in also
means that the cousin will actually be in copyright violation by using any
pictures which are still under copyright, whether taken by Christina or

Christina,

The copyright on pictures belongs to the person who took them, for how long
the copyright lasts varies from country to country, but since you sent them
to your cousin the copyright is clearly not hers and she cannot copyright
them. If you took them then you can demand acknowledgement. subject to this
you can use them as you wish.

Thanks John,

She was very specific that her "Work" was copyrighted and couldn't be
copied. Stressing that fact, I assume that she will not allow me to copy the

all the pictures she used and assisted her in corrections, whatever. As long

Maybe the parish library has it wrong?
http://www.lasalle.lib.la.us/AboutUs.html

Or the school board? http://www.lasallepsb.com/

And on the Louisiana State website
http://www.louisiana.gov/wps/wcm/connect/Louisiana.gov/Home, every instance
had no space.

I felt that the spelling as used on official websites was the most correct.

I don't trust Wikipedia as a definitive source because who knows who has
contributed the information?

Re: [LegacyUG] A Huge Mess -- Source Citations and Pictures

2008-03-22 Thread JLB
I've made some pretty good messes in Legacy, moon to blame or not, so
I'm somewhat acquainted. IF you have your digital images in one folder
rather than spread around it's still painful but more bearable
relatively speaking. No backup of family file I presume? We were just
talking about that yesterday and I'm sure it's gone around many times
before. O god, people, back up your work.

If you relink one source and set it up on the clipboard you can shorten
the pain somewhat by using that one to replace the several related
others that have gone awry. Rinse and repeat. It's a bit tough not
being able to see where you are exactly but just getting the sickening
overview. I think the Source Writer in v.7 has to do with source
templates for re-writing sources in a more professional manner. I doubt
that it functions as a washing machine for links that have gone astray.
That's a whole other issue. I once renamed my sources outside Legacy
and didn't realize at the time that that would unlink everything. If
you rename sources using the Picture Center (a very painful process
actually) it won't destroy your links.

Sorry, I wish I knew, but I think you know if it's beyond the beyond.

[LegacyUG] Passage Express

2008-03-22 Thread Sam Weldon
I am trying to make a CD of a Legacy file with Passage Express, the
free edition offered with Legacy Version 6 Deluxe. I have used this before
and it done an excellent job but a couple of weeks ago I was going to use it
and it told me there was an update so I let it update it. Now I am trying
to make another CD and it doesn't work. I open the program and I want to
include the entire file so I give it a title, and select everything except
get Legacy because I know my cousin doesn't want a genealogy program. Then I
create and it comes up with the picture and opening I selected but when I
try to test the project it won't show the legacy file. Shows all the
multimedia (pictures of people, documents, and headstones), shows the email
for a message, goes to the web page but will not get the Legacy file. Also
when I created one about six months ago it had the name of each picture, or
document, or headstone, now it is just a picture of whatever it is. I even
went so far as to publish it, copy it to a CD. Still the same problem.
Anyone can tell me what I'm doing wrong?

My first attempt is now online, a typical page being

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/underwoods/overalltree/494.htm

I would like to increase the font size of the 'vital statistics' of born,

I am using Legacy 6.0 Standard, and I'm far from a programming expert!

Re: [LegacyUG] A Huge Mess -- Source Citations and Pictures

2008-03-22 Thread Kris
It originally started out as a path problem on a new installation with
different hard drives. Changing the path in locations and trying to
reorganize things to "make it fit" just did not work -- I don't know if it
was a hard drive problem or a Vista (blech) problem, but it was a total
mess with crashing and other nastiness going on.

So I decided I was out of luck anyway, so I reorganized my "filing system"
and now keep everything under RINs and MRINs -- which is another reason
starting over will be such a PITA trying to make sure the old and new
numbers match.

It makes things a *lot* easier to file and find, but now the file names of
the pictures and documents have all been chanced. Also, I have my census
images in a separate directory because there are *so* many of them and I
don't want them in with the other images.

HTH -- Thanks

Hi, Paul
Congratulations
The 'vital statistics' font can be made larger. but not (at present)
within Legacy.
Using a text editor, such as PSPad, you can do a global Search and
Replace on the entire folder containing your webpages
Search for size=-2
Replace with size=-1
It is easy to do - but of course, needs to be repeated each time the
page are regenerated.
You may find this site useful: WUL is a Yahoo Group for those of us

Look especially at Ron Ferguson's website, he our guru.

I suppose a book can be copyright as literature, so passages cannot be
quoted verbatim without the author's permission. But I don't see how
you can "copyright research" when the original data, such as names,

RE: [LegacyUG] Font size in uploaded pages.

2008-03-22 Thread Brian Lightfoot
Sherry's comments are correct about other viewers having the capability to
increase font size of the entire HTML doc being view. Some scroll mice have
a built-in button for this function and in addition you'll find that just
CTRL and the + or - keys will also do the same. (Works in IE and Firefox).

Unless you are handy at doing your own HTML editing, Legacy offers very
little control over the HTML that is output. It's sort of like "this is the
way it's going to be and you can't do anything about it". But don't fret --
many other genealogical programs don't even offer to output to HTML. I think
Legacy is ahead of the game here but I'd like to see some more customization
(and even consistency) in creating HTML documents. Maybe even allow the user
to create their own "style sheet" for sources, data, etc. and that style
sheet will be used in the HTML output (wish list item #6,783).

Other than doing your own HTML editing (not really suggested unless you are
a glutton for punishment), you can opt to have a GEDCOM output to HTML using
any one of many GEDCOM-to-HTML programs out there. One that I've used in the
past is Ged2Web (just Google it) but once again, you'll lose any chance to
make your own customizations although I find the font size choices are
usually a little more consistent and generally acceptable.

In Legacy, there's no way to customize the font sizes at this time.

The viewer of the website can increase the font sizes for the whole web
page, not specific sections. In IE, hold down the ctrl key and roll the
scroll wheel on the mouse or go to View > Text size and change the size of
the fonts.

If those features aren't working quite right, go to Tools > Internet Options
and on the General Tab, click on the Accessibility button. Then select
"ignore font sizes on web pages". I've found for some websites I need to
set this feature in order for the fonts to enlarge or shrink properly.

Thanks for using Legacy.

Christina,

The copyright on pictures belongs to the person who took them, for how long the
copyright lasts varies from country to country, but since you sent them to your
cousin the copyright is clearly not hers and she cannot copyright them. If you
took them then you can demand acknowledgement. subject to this you can use them
as you wish.

2008-03-22 Thread Brian Lightfoot
But that misses the point of his question. Yes, anyone can increase or
decrease the font size of the ENTIRE HTML doc that is being view but his
question was how to make the font size of the vitals to be the same as the
font size as the sources. As Sherry pointed out, one cannot do this within
Legacy as those sizes are all hard coded into the program and the user has
no control over the output. Maybe Legacy 8.0?

The 'vital statistics' font can be made larger. but not (at present)
within Legacy.
Using a text editor, such as PSPad, you can do a global Search and
Replace on the entire folder containing your webpages
Search for size=-2
Replace with size=-1
It is easy to do - but of course, needs to be repeated each time the
page are regenerated.

[LegacyUG] spacing on reports

2008-03-22 Thread Dede Holden
I am cleaning up my sources and I have a question about the spacing on
reports.

On the training videos, Geoff inserts a blank line at the beginning of
the source detail so that it looks better on the reports.

I have noticed that a line (or even two) needs to be inserted at the
beginning of the Master Source comments, so that it prints separately
from the Master Source Text, if you're using the Printed Style format
of the Source Citations report. If you use the list format, a
"Comments:" header is inserted prior to the comment.

Is there a possibility that this will be addressed in Legacy 7? There
are times I'd like to use the Printed Style format, but I would have
to add my own Comments header. Then if I wanted to print a list style
report, the Comments header would be redundant.

How do the rest of you deal with this? Thanks for your input.

RE: [LegacyUG] Geo database bug??

2008-03-22 Thread Arnold Sprague

Sherry,
If I enter "Ottawa, , IL, USA" and click on the GEO icon to find the
appropriate county, I get "Ottawa, La Salle, Illinois, USA". Using
that as a basis, if I then enter "Ottawa, La Salle, IL, USA" and
click on the GEO icon, I get "There was never a county by the name of
La Salle in the state of Illinois." If I click on the Show County
List, the county name LaSalle appears.
Thus, getting back to my message below, "Show Geo Location List" is
doing weird things by showing both La Salle and LaSalle Counties in
Illinois, but not really liking either. The purpose of my initial
post was to support what someone else is also experiencing with "Show
Geo Location List." I included his message, but it has disappeared
along the way.
Anyway, odd things are happening within Legacy. And sorry that my
initial post was not clear.

2008-03-22 Thread John Carter
Best solution: get her written permission to use the material. That
resolves all questions.

The census documents at Ancestry are copyrighted *as they present them*
but the original *data* is not. Since the birth and death dates of your
ancestors are not copyrighted - they are probably on publicly viewable
tombstones - using her work as a reference and giving credit is not a
copyright violation. The *format* of the other person's research can be
copyrighted, so you can't quote her work varbatim and claim it as yours.

Sorry this is so long --

I have three years invested in about 2000 people and about 600 marriages in
my database.

I originally just used Master Sources but after learning here about breaking
them out, I started from scratch and started using master sources and source
detail (except for having to find and fix a typo ten times). I really like
that better, but I messed up my paths (long story) and now my census detail
citations, for instance, have lost the links to the census images. So if I
have used the citation for ten people, I need to go back and find all of
them and change the reference to the correct image. I know this is nothing
new -- I've been digging through the archives and find that a search/replace
can help here, but for most of them there's nothing to search for. For some
reason the picture reference is just blank. I must have done something
stupid somewhere along the line and they're gone now.

I have this problem with pretty much every media item, I've used or cited,
though not all the references have disappeared, but the paths are messed up.

I did the "Test All Media Paths" thing and had it print out a report, but
it's basically useless for me, unless I'm missing something obvious. I have
a list of bad paths, but it doesn't tell me where to find it -- for
instance, what person or marriage it's supposed to be linked to. I don't
find a way to just search for the string unless I'm doing "Search and
Replace" which I don't want to do unless I know what I'm replacing.

I'm now reading that version 7 will include some great citation improvements
and I'm really looking forward to that (among other things).

I have such a mess here, I'm really thinking of just starting over again
with a clean database, but the thought of all the work that's gone into this
one makes my head hurt. I really don't know if it would be easier to try to
find and fix all this stuff, or just start from scratch, especially with the
new version coming out. Would I have to make a lot of changes in citations
then anyway?

Thank you for your patience and --

What would you do?

RE: [LegacyUG] Font size in uploaded pages.

2008-03-22 Thread Sherry/Support

RE: [LegacyUG] Regarding Notes & Sources

2008-03-22 Thread Janis Gilmore
I agree with the former poster who suggested that you invest in the training
videos. They are most helpful in getting started. Ultimately, you will
probably tweak the system to meet your own needs better, but the initial
instruction from the videos will get you going in the right direction, and
help you to understand enough to begin to tweak.

Everyone handles census differently. I put the fully transcribed data in the
event notes for each member of the household, so that their Chronology will
show me at a glance where they were, and with whom. I have been thinking
lately, though, that I might also want to copy that info into the citation
detail text box.

If you are new enough to the program that you haven't discovered the "copy
event to clipboard" function, you should check it out.

As I look at a particular line, I print the Chronology report for each
ancestor frequently. It is easily saved as a pdf, allowing you the freedom
of the Legacy program as you look at it. You can see how the sentences are
reading, and carefully look over your sources. I might print the Chronology
for one person several times in an afternoon, as I refine it. It doesn't
waste paper, and if you name it the same thing, each new version replaces
the old one. It is a great way to see where the gaps in your info are.

And somehow, I proofread event notes and sources better in the pdf than I do
in the program - meaning that I catch a lot more errors.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Regarding Notes & Sources

I've recently decided to start using
 Legacy and I'm
having difficulty figuring out a couple of things regarding Notes. I've used
PAF for over ten years, and used the Notes section regularly to
incorporation transcriptions from pensions, wills & obituaries, as well as
stories that family members told me about the person. When viewing Census
records, I also put the records into the Head of Household's Notes section,
describing the person, what they did for a living at the time, how old
he/she was, and the members of his/her family living in the home.

What is the proper way to add this information for
 Legacy? It
appears to me that
 Legacy is a much
more powerful program than PAF, and I want to take full advantage of putting
information in the proper places for purposes of creating reports and books,
but I can't seem to get a grip on where I should be putting notes like
obituaries. Can you guys share some tips regarding what you do? My goal in
typing all of the census information is to get it to read "like a story" for
when I'm printing out reports and so forth.

I'm also having some difficulty figuring out how to add all the source
information I need. I've made a commitment to go through my files and
include source information for anyone I don't have it listed from my early
days when I didn't really understand what I was doing. I understand (mostly)
how to enter a source when I'm looking at the document or a copy of the
document - When I pull an obituary off of Newspaper Archives, for example, I
include the name of the newspaper, the location of the newspaper, the date
and the page number. What do I put for Repository, though? If I've saved a
copy of the obituary, am I the repository? Or do I list the URL of the
actual page of the newspaper? When I'm listing census records that I've
pulled off of Ancestry, is Ancestry the Repository?

Any suggestions will be appreciated - I know there's going to be a learning
curve with changing software, but I don't want to make some of the mistakes
I've made in the past. Thanks a lot!

The USA County Verifier has it entered correctly. The correct spelling for
that county is LaSalle, as per the county website at
http://www.lasallecounty.org/

Where I found conflicts on spelling, I would go with whatever the official
county or state websites used.

To confuse things further, LaSalle in Louisiana has no space. La Salle in
Texas uses a space!

Dave,

The Geo Location Database was created by another company and it includes
independent cities.

The USA County Verifier does not include independent cities for the most
part (I think there are a couple in there). I hope to have time one of
these days to be able to get the independent cities entered.

There are some errors in Geo and Geo covers only current locations - it
doesn't cover historical locations - so the two may never match exactly.

Thanks for using Legacy.

I've been using Legacy for about four months now.  I am constantly being
amazed at how packed full of features this program is.  I can do so much
more with it than my previous software.  One of those things is using the
Geo Database.  Many of my entries for places only have city and state.  I
have been using the search feature of the Geo Database, filling in the city
and state, thereby finding the proper county.

Yesterday, I did this like I have dozens of times before:  searched for
Danville, Virginia.  The returned result was  "Danville, Danville (city),
Virginia, USA". When I try to select and use this location, Legacy says
"There was never a county by the name of Danville (city) in the state of
Virginia.".  I have had to bypass this with a double comma (,,) to eliminate
the county in this case.

Shouldn't Legacy be able to accept its own search result? (there was only
this one result from the search).  A possible bug?

I am using 6.0.0.190 Deluxe.  Any suggestions?

Yes, Danville is an independent city and not part of a county. The double
comma is used to indicate you do not know or do not have the county
recorded. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_in_Virginia for
some discussion of the 39 independent cities in Virginia.

Dave, do a little more research on Virginia political subdivisions. I
think parts of that state do not have counties, so the database is showing
you that Danville (city) is not in a county, though I'm not familiar with
that specific location.

"There was never a county by the name of Danville (city) in the state of
Virginia.". I have had to bypass this with a double comma (,,) to eliminate
the county in this case.

Dave, do a little more research on Virginia political subdivisions. I think
parts of that state do not have counties, so the database is showing you
that Danville (city) is not in a county, though I'm not familiar with that
specific location.

[LegacyUG] Geo database bug??

2008-03-22 Thread David Dearth
I've been using Legacy for about four months now. I am constantly being amazed
at how packed full of features this program is. I can do so much more with it
than my previous software. One of those things is using the Geo Database.
Many of my entries for places only have city and state. I have been using the
search feature of the Geo Database, filling in the city and state, thereby
finding the proper county.

Yesterday, I did this like I have dozens of times before: searched for
Danville, Virginia. The returned result was "Danville, Danville (city),
Virginia, USA". When I try to select and use this location, Legacy says "There
was never a county by the name of Danville (city) in the state of Virginia.".
I have had to bypass this with a double comma (,,) to eliminate the county in
this case.

Shouldn't Legacy be able to accept its own search result? (there was only this
one result from the search). A possible bug?

I am using 6.0.0.190 Deluxe. Any suggestions?

Thanks
Dave Dearth

Re: [LegacyUG] Regarding Notes & Sources

2008-03-22 Thread Dede Holden
Mariah,

I am also a relatively new Legacy user. I highly recommend the
tutorial videos. You may have to watch them several times. I am
still feeling my way with Sources and notes. I'd also recommend that
you read this user group's archives, searching for "lumpers and
splitters" in regard to Sources.

Another consideration for you to consider is the much anticipated
Legacy 7. Supposedly the Sourcing templates will be easier? to use.
We are all waiting for this, some more patiently than others.

I have found that entering a little bit of information, then
previewing the reports that you are interested in, will let you know
if you're on the right track.

Good luck. Keep reading these posts. I've learned so much just by reading.

[LegacyUG] Regarding Notes & Sources

2008-03-22 Thread Mariah Brazil
I've recently decided to start using
Legacyand
I'm having difficulty figuring out a couple of things regarding Notes.
I've used PAF for over ten years, and used the Notes section regularly to
incorporation transcriptions from pensions, wills & obituaries, as well as
stories that family members told me about the person. When viewing Census
records, I also put the records into the Head of Household's Notes section,
describing the person, what they did for a living at the time, how old
he/she was, and the members of his/her family living in the home.

What is the proper way to add this information for
Legacy?
It appears to me that
Legacyis a
much more powerful program than PAF, and I want to take full advantage
of putting information in the proper places for purposes of creating reports
and books, but I can't seem to get a grip on where I should be putting notes
like obituaries. Can you guys share some tips regarding what you do? My
goal in typing all of the census information is to get it to read "like a
story" for when I'm printing out reports and so forth.

Thank you clearing and resetting is now giving the correct results.

thanks

All in the Pedigree View of Legacy 6.0

If I select my Mother's brother it shows UNCLE to the right of his
name

If I select my mother's half brother it shows nothing.

If I select my Uncles Child it shows First Cousin to the right of
his name.

I do agree my Uncle and 1st Cousin are not my ancestors but when
they are select in the Pedigree View it shows there correct
relationship to me.

Tools -> Set Relationships and set it to me.

Then select other relatives in the pedigree view.

If there's a relationship it appears to the right of their name.

1/2 Uncle nothing to the right of his name.

Are you using an old version of Legacy?

When I'm looking at relations via the Pedigree Tab and select
the 1/2
Uncle nothing appears to the right of his name.

For all other relationships based on who is highlighted
Father, mother,
uncle, aunt, grandmother I do see the relationship appear to
the right
of the name.

When I do the Relationship Calculator I do see 1/2 Uncle. I
have never
used this feature before.

Still wondering why I don't see something in the Pedigree
view though!

thanks,
john
