Well I hadn't noticed that. It does give you the main events but for
others it just says Event.

Guess I too quickly turn it the list into a Search List.

YES it WILL tell you whether this is a birth, death or marriage event..
At the bottom of the list of "All Individulas Who Use This
Location", on the left side it will show for each person
highlighted, how the location applies to that particular individual..

I am not sure that this would be the most effective way of finding what the OP
asked for, as it will return all the individuals who have *any* connection with
that location, and not just residence. For example, I have never lived in the
location where I was born (I am not counting 3 days in the hospital), my uncle
died in a location where he never lived (and no days in hospital).

Provided all addresses where someone lived are entered into the Residence Event
then I would use Search>Find>Detailed Search and look for an individual where
the Residence Event Contains the town/city and tag these. If, like I do, one
includes the residence when married in the Marriage Events then repeat the
search, adding to the the existing list and then tag.

RE: [LegacyUG] Finding placenames and associated family files

2008-04-11 Thread Cathy

Hi Ron,

I suspect few users of Legacy are as rigorous in entering Residence
events for everyone. I'd never find everyone associated with a place
your way. I know I rarely enter residence events for any other than
direct line ancestors. For others in the 19th century, most of my
information comes from censuses and it seems to me to be doubling up
to enter both a Census event and a residence event when the census is
the only source.

However, I understood the original OP wanting people in anyway
associated with a particular place as someone was going there to do
research. That would include birth or death even if the person was
only there for a few hours.

The list guidelines say: Plain text only - which means using the

Again you have failed to state the objective you are seeking. Do you want a small piece of your
file exported or the entire thing? Is there specific information you wish to extract? We can not
help if we do not know what your goal is.

Your entire file can be opened in Access but you MUST work only with a COPY.

In windows explorer, browse to the location where you keep your family file. (Use your file name in
place of filename.fdb)

Right click on the file (filename.fdb) and select copy. Then press CTRL and V together. You should
then have a file named "copy of filename.fdb".

When you open Access select to open files of type *.* all files. You will then be able to see your
file (copy of filename.fdb) and open it directly in Access.

I would seriously suggest you have someone with a good knowledge of Access with you the first time
you attempt this. Access is not an easy program to use without prior knowledge. It is NOT
intuitive or user friendly.

Also, when you open Access what you see will not, at first glance,
equate much to what you see in Legacy. There are just a great many
tables and a few queries (I recommend you DO NOT touch the queries) and
the names of the tables are not really indicative of their contents. It
can be quite difficult to know which tables to link in a query to
extract the information you want. However, if you just want to do
something fairly basic involving one table, Access is a great tool.

I think your problem is straight forward:
- go to your Master Location List
- locate the location you are interested in

- tag those records (or print the list)
- then do what you want (e.g. print family group sheets, etc.)

Re: [LegacyUG] Census vs Residence Events

2008-04-11 Thread Elsie Saar
I also do not use Census events. I list all items from a census to
appropriate events: name, residence, birth, occupation, education,
real estate, etc and use the census as a source. So if I see a
residence for 1920, for example, I can easily see what the source is,
whether it's a census or directory or whatever. Each person on each
census gets all items of info entered. Perhaps I'm a little pedantic.

For what it's worth, I enter a residence event as:
Event: Residence
Desc: with his father in law at 232 Washington Ave. in
Date: Jan 1, 1920
Place: Kingston, Ulster Co., New York, USA

Then I source that event:
Master Source: US Federal Census
Detail: 1920 NY, Ulster, ED 64, sheet 4b, line 13

I copy the residence event with its source, and use it for each member
of the household. I use the line number of the head of the household
for each member. If I have used a relationship such as "with his
father in law" I change that to read "with her father" or for
children, "with his/her grandfather".

equate much to what you see in Legacy. There are just a great many
tables and a few queries (I recommend you DO NOT touch the queries) and
the names of the tables are not really indicative of their contents. It
can be quite difficult to know which tables to link in a query to

Again you have failed to state the objective you are seeking. Do you want a
small piece of your
file exported or the entire thing? Is there specific information you wish
to extract? We can not
help if we do not know what your goal is.

Your entire file can be opened in Access but you MUST work only with a COPY.

In windows explorer, browse to the location where you keep your family file.
(Use your file name in
place of filename.fdb)

Right click on the file (filename.fdb) and select copy. Then press CTRL and
V together. You should
then have a file named "copy of filename.fdb".

When you open Access select to open files of type *.* all files. You will
then be able to see your
file (copy of filename.fdb) and open it directly in Access.

I would seriously suggest you have someone with a good knowledge of Access
with you the first time
you attempt this. Access is not an easy program to use without prior
knowledge. It is NOT
intuitive or user friendly.

Re: [LegacyUG] Source Problem

2008-04-11 Thread s2f
Disregard - I finally figured out what was being posited for source and detail
controls. I was attempting to add the number as a prefix to teh source title.
e.g. 9100 Smith Genealogy. All I needed to do was to add the master source
number as a 'file ID', and any detailed data as MRIN+a number as the detail ID.
It worked in my book example just fine with the 'ID: 9100' and the 'Cit.ID:
1234-1'. Sheesh!!!

Some of us are more dense than others.. :-)

Thank you also Jim for your helpful comments.

I have me data in Legacy.

I also have Excel but from past e-mails it was suggested that the best
program to import data in to do the sorting was Access ? Now you mention
Excel.

I really am confused.

QUESTION

I have my data in Legacy and I want to export this information some where so
that I can sort by year of birth and then also sort the same sort by place
and then father.

What is my best action PLEASE.

RE: [LegacyUG] Exporting a Legacy file to Access

2008-04-11 Thread s2f
As Gene Y. suggested - you can make a copy of the file as he indicated. Then
using the copy, CHANGE the ending of the file from '.fdb' to '.mdb' and it
should open/import into Access quite nicely. This was suggested to me when I
was attempting to correct some notes.

After you save the file out of Access, change the '.mdb' ending back to
'.fdb'. Open it in Legacy and see what happens. If it goes haywire, you can
always revert to the unchanged '.fdb' file from the original save. Nice things
about backups and multiple copies.

Re: [LegacyUG] Source Problem

2008-04-11 Thread Cathy

Hi Bob,

I'm not sure what you've done. Have you added the number to the
Source List Name or the Source Title?

and what do you mean by "event portion"

You edit Sources in the Master Source list which you can get to in
various ways - including from the Assigned Sources screen which you
may have accessed through going to a Source attached to an Event?

Whether the Source List Name appears in your Endnotes is controlled
by Options > Customise - Sources tab.

Since the Source List Name is really there as a finding aid for the
Legacy user, it doesn't really belong in the endnotes/printed source.
It will be used, I think, if you haven't filled in a Title or other
data to identify the source- so that may account for why you get it
some places and not others if you've added your number to the Source
List Name. I can't conceive of why you'd mess up your Source Titles
with a number. However, you may want to use one in the Source List
Name to be more organised if you have your Sources listed somewhere
else by number.

If you want a printout of your sources, use the Source Citation
Report which you'll find in the Reports - Books/Other or from the
Master Source list - Options - Print.

I sent an email query to footnote.com's support asking the current
printing version of the pdf file for Evidence Explained and was told
that they thought it was the 2007 first printing. So for now that is

[LegacyUG] addresses help!

2008-04-11 Thread Cynthia Russell
I'm getting ready to travel to Ft. Wayne, IN and on to Cincinnati for the
Ohio Genealogical Society's annual conference. On the way, I am stopping to
research in Noble Co, IN. I would like to be able to send post cards to all
of the descendants of their ancestor who is buried there.

Hoping that some one can detail how I would get the mailing addresses for
living descendants of one branch to print in a list, pretty please!

Gratefully,

Cynthia N.

RE: [LegacyUG] Employment Event vs Occupation Event

2008-04-11 Thread M. Brenzel
My thoughts are that Occupation is what is your job. Employment is where
do/did you work for what dates.

For example, your occupation might be Nurse. Employment would be the dates
that you worked at a particular hospital.

As far as Legacy is concerned, what is the difference between an Occupation
event and an Employment event?
Or more generally, is there a cheat sheet somewhere that lists all the
predefined event names and what they actually mean?

Employment Event vs Occupation EventOccupation would mean something like
Computer Programmer, where an Employment event would be more like IBM. One
is the skill involved, the other is the employer.

Re: [LegacyUG] Census vs Residence Events

2008-04-11 Thread GeoSci
Interesting idea - if I understand - it might happen that you have
MANY residence events for a single person. I lived in three places in
less that 1 year (just for an example). So if I found evidence for
each location - each would be a different residence event? I have
grandparents living in 5 different places over 60 years of census data
- resulting in 5 residence events?

Just thinking aloud...

Looking at the Event Sentence Definitions is a good way of getting a
feel for how events are used in the default.

You can, of course, edit the Event Sentence so you can use the fields
as you like.

Re: [LegacyUG] addresses help!

2008-04-11 Thread JLB
Assuming you already have the addresses for said people, you can do a
Search for the line you're interested in, another search for the Living
of that line and then combine that with a search for the mailing
addresses of those people. No doubt your Search List will be in the Name
List and there you can print it. Are you needing to know how to search
in Legacy or are you already acquainted? If you don't have the addresses
of the Living descendants, I'd say you're out of luck here.

[LegacyUG] Siblings

2008-04-11 Thread GeoSci
Strange - I was viewing FAMILY VIEW and my mouse came to rest between
the husband and wife. A little box popped up and - just by clicking
the space between husband and wife - one can see all of the siblings
of the highlighted person.

Anyone discover any other "hidden" (or perhaps I just never
discovered) bits in Legacy?

The only way I know to print that information in Legacy is using the

Valarie,

Exactly what type of file do you want to export?
A database file, a report file (if a report file what format? Text, HTML, Doc),
other?
Legacy contains many file types that can be exported and Access can import many
file types but each has its own special requirements so until you are a bit
more specific there is really nothing we can do to help you.

I want to put the inforamtion in CULLODEN ONS, a Legacy family history file
in a place where I can search the birth years, and then search again in that
search for the place and then the father.

Actually that can all be done in the one search once the inforamtion is in
the new place - Access, MS Works database or Excel.
