Re: [LegacyUG] search and replace
IMHO, they are not the same thing. 'can't read and write' shows lack of education. 'unable to read or write' may have to do with medical situations (blind, brain damaged, idiotic). Both sentences are the required answers to census questions in various locations. It is, of course, your choice to do what you feel is correct. I have found that replacing can be too specific. In this task, I would use the search for the phrase read and write, and tag all 'owners'. then change them one at a time. Sometimes I had searched with the wrong amount of space-s. If your video card supports it, try adding a 2nd monitor. Makes life SSOOO much easier (in some situations). You would just need 2 applications per screen! It probably specifies a location connected with your Ancestor which is not actually in Alaska, but has the same name as a place in Alaska. Locate the correct location on the map and right click. Re: [LegacyUG] Old Source Detail associated with newly Merged Master Sources
Janis, Based on what Geoff and Dave B have said, I think my source and details were pretty clear cut - no conflicts so everything combined like it was supposed to. Or maybe it was just beginner's luck! After reading Geoff's comments and Dave B.'s observations, I've gone back and checked everything just to be sure I didn't overlook something that might have gotten lost in translation. I'm a little nervous about trying to combine any more sources, since everyone has not had the same results that I had. I'm like you - I do love the new Sourcewriter. I am able to be more consistent in the way I am entering my data. I finally feel confident that I'm doing things the right way - not just feeling my way through and making it up as I go. RE: [LegacyUG] Source Citation Original Marriage Cert
Denise: What Penny describes as the Texas procedure for marriage licenses and certificates sounds very much like that followed in the past in California and Kansas (although by now it's probably streamlined and automated somehow) and, in fact, my own originals were folded to mailing size at one time. So I agree with what she's said, but still feel that the Artifact template in Legacy is the best citation fit. And while my own examples probably do carry a notation on the backs about where they were recorded, I'm not inclined to dismantle some rather expensive framing jobs for the sake of getting that additional bit of info for a citation It seems very odd that, since marriage licenses and certificates are a fairly common "family paper" and that the same procedure was apparently followed in at least a few states, if not all, Mills didn't include a specific citation format for them or at least indicate how they should be treated. Perhaps Legacy's Source Writer needs to expand on _EE_? Kirsten -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Penny Sent: Wednesday, June 18, 2008 10:29 PM To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Source Citation Original Marriage Cert Denise, I think I'm going to have to disagree on this question with others who have replied thus far. Birth and death certificates, at least in Texas, are now and have always been handled a little differently than marriage certificates. I don't know if this holds true for other states - probably not in all of them. I have three original "marriage certificates" from the State of Texas: my own, my parents, and my paternal grandparents.I also have a certified copy of my own marriage cert. and am, therefore, able to compare to see the differences. In Texas, these are what are issued as "marriage licenses". Couple goes to the County Clerk to get one; once the prerequisites are met, it's signed & issued by said County Clerk, and the couple takes it with them to whomever is going to perform the wedding ceremony. The person who performs the rites (whether minister or other) then signs and fills in the date and location of the ceremony and he/she sends it back to the issuing County Clerk for recording. The Co. Clerk then records it - (by making an exact transcript that looks very much like the original except that the signatures (of the minister/JP and the County Clerk) are typed in instead of actually signed. The Clerk then mails the original back to the couple. When a certified copy is later issued, it's not a photocopy of the original, it's a copy of the transcribed record held in the Clerk's office (duly signed & stamped by the current County Clerk or authorized personnel as being authentic). On the back of the **originals** is where you find where exactly this marriage is recorded in Texas. It will say something like: Filed the 9th day of April 1935 W.A. Tittle (actual signature) Clerk County Court of Terry County Recorded in Book 3, Page 208 of Marriage Records This is a long way around to say: You bet I would put the citation in stating who holds the original. I record the provenance of an original marriage record just as I would the provenance of a family Bible. I certainly will find a way (when I re-enter these via Source Writer) to include where the certificate was recorded. Others will be able to find it from that; but it needs to be noted that the original still exists and who has it. I haven't looked at this in Legacy 7, but I would think it would be government records because it's issued under the authority of a state; however, unless I can find a way to note both where the certificate is recorded (e.g. County name, Marriage Book #, and page) plus who holds the original, then I'll have to re-think it. RE: [LegacyUG] Source Citation Original Marriage Cert
Kirsten, Yes, Legacy's SourceWriter is and will continue to expand on Evidence Explained. We are currently working on adding all of the media that were not modeled with each individual model in EE. We'll release this in free updates. We are also making progress right now on adding specific templates for UK BMDs and census records. These will come with time. As Elizabeth Mills states in her book, there's no way that she could provide models for all sources throughout the world, but she did do a good job in my opinion of providing the needed background. Legacy will make this easier though, both now and in future development. Thanks, Geoff Rasmussen Millennia Corporation [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.LegacyFamilyTree.com -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Kirsten Bowman Sent: Thursday, June 19, 2008 10:39 AM To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Source Citation Original Marriage Cert Denise: What Penny describes as the Texas procedure for marriage licenses and certificates sounds very much like that followed in the past in California and Kansas (although by now it's probably streamlined and automated somehow) and, in fact, my own originals were folded to mailing size at one time. Mike. Thanks for your explanation. You have a great way of clearing things up. I definitely believe in KISS. Not exactly. Your source already existed, therefore when you edit it, you use the version 6 method of creating/assigning/citing sources. If you create a new source, but copy bits and pieces of the existing source, then you'd be using the version 7 methods i.e. Source Writer. I am a new user of Legacy and just starting to figure things out. Is this what the Source Conversion tool is supposed to do? If they ever figure out how to get it done without causing an extreme amount of furore on this list from people that didn't like the way the conversion was done. My thoughts here are: KISS. Keep it simple! When creating a new, Source Writer derived source, allow the user to select an existing Master Source and display the details (read-only) alongside the entry fields for the new source. Then, let the user copy and paste between the two panels. Result: any cock-ups are due to the user, not Legacy. -- Regards, Mike Fry Johannesburg. RE: [LegacyUG] Source Citation Original Marriage Cert
Penny, There is always more than one way to see a situation. Your reasoning makes a good point. I didn't realize that the information itself would be different on the certificate I hold from the court document, but now I see that they could each yield more or less information. Thanks for the explanation of how the information travels along the line. Perhaps my marriage certificates are Artifacts, and when/if I view/acquire official court recordings those will be another source recorded as GovRecords. Just a thought. Re: [LegacyUG] Using Firefox instead of IE in Legacy
Jeff, Don't be too confident about the security of Firefox. When it was a new browser, it was safer than the then-current version of IE. However, it is now popular enough to be targeted by the hackers and even the latest version (3.0) has security holes. It occurred when I went to edit a source detail that had been entered in V.6. The Source text is 680 lines of text and I had about 2 lines of text in comments. When selecting edit detail a pop up box appears with the above error message and upon closing the pop up the edit detail form opens with the top half distorted and, upon closing that, the program shuts down. Deleting either the source text OR the comments text eliminated the problem. It behaves as if it has exceeded a maximum value, such as an object having an interger designation rather than a long, causing an overflow access. I have deleted the comments and all is functioning, however there appears to be an underlying problem which needs attention. -- Gene Y. n2kvs Researching Young, Zies, Harer & Cox with Legacy Family Tree http://h1.ripway.com/egptech/ Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp

RE: [LegacyUG] Source Citation Original Marriage Cert
Thanks, Steve, It sounds like it would be good to record these "privately held" docs as "Gov" because that is where another researcher would find the official legal documentation. Again I think it comes down to how the individual likes to record the Certificate in Legacy, a friend said as he has the "Original" death certificate of his parents so he records it as "Privately Held Materials". Myself I am recording the Certificate & it's details as "Gov Records" and the state in which it is held so that down the track if my "original" certificate is lost then who ever is looking at my Records will know which State & Govt Office to apply for another copy if they want it. I took a source that had lots of different source details for several generations. I created a new Master Source using the Source Writer. I combined the two. My details stayed exactly where they were supposed to! I did not have to re-enter any of the details. I was thrilled. Of course, I did a backup before trying this, just in case I lost all those source details that I spent DAYS entering. As soon as they tweak the subsequent citation problem, this is going to be the best thing to happen to us since the GEDCOM! Re: [LegacyUG] Source conversion
John Gregson wrote: O.K.; guess I understand that; but I did a lot of editing on this one source, and also saved the results It would seem to me that if you use an original source, and in this case all of my data was imported using GEDCOM, followed by two days of 'playing around' and saving the result, then I am using Source Writer. Re: [LegacyUG] Strange happenings on Individual Information Screen
GeoSci wrote Simple enough and it does seem to work. Too bad they just couldn't make them a bit smaller. I often run 3-4 programs at the same time - each taking about 1/4 of the screen so I can see all at once. Are your icons the smallest available size? I think the default is for Medium. Right click on the toolbar, select Options, Button Size and click on Small. Yes, it's safe but you have to look at the Options > Customize > Locations Tab to see if the default locations are the correct ones. Re: [LegacyUG] Strange happenings on Individual Information Screen
Look in Options, Customize, Other look on the right side about half way down for Toolbar Picture Sizes Do you have "Automatic (depends on size of window)" checked? This works on the Family View screen, but then I saw you were referring to the individual screen. It doesn't seem to help on that screen if the window is too small. Bug? Kathy, I do not know the answer to your question (I would be checking with Legacy to ensure that I have a valid number) but I do know that it has nothing to do with the Registry.
