Re: [LegacyUG] search and replace

2008-06-19 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
IMHO, they are not the same thing. 'can't read and
write' shows lack of education. 'unable to read or
write' may have to do with medical situations (blind,
brain damaged, idiotic). Both sentences are the
required answers to census questions in various
locations. It is, of course, your choice to do what
you feel is correct.
I have found that replacing can be too specific. In
this task, I would use the search for the phrase read
and write, and tag all 'owners'. then change them one
at a time. Sometimes I had searched with the wrong
amount of space-s.
Good luck

2008-06-19 Thread Robert57P via Gmail
If your video card supports it, try adding a 2nd monitor. Makes life SSOOO
much easier (in some situations). You would just need 2 applications per
screen! (Or you could go with 4 per screen still had have 8 running!)

Jim,
Simple enough and it does seem to work. Too bad they just couldn't
make them a bit smaller. I often run 3-4 programs at the same time -
each taking about 1/4 of the screen so I can see all at once.
Thanks

Late in my use of Legacy 6 - I noticed the icons for pictures, notes,
etc were not showing up on the Individual's Information screen but I
just let it go. Installed Legacy 7 and the icons were back (and very
welcome). They were there last night. Today - GONE! The only icon
(after the surname box) is the temple and it is grayed out.

Ideas on getting my icons back - and why would they disappear??

Hover your mouse over the pin so the label comes up and see what it
says. It probably specifies a location connected with your Ancestor
which is not actually in Alaska, but has the same name as a place in
Alaska.

Locate the correct location on the map and right click. You will be
asked if you want to set the Lat & Long to the new location and you
select Yes.

(Sometimes when you are mapping a location VE just decides it knows
where you mean and sticks the pin in when in fact it has the wrong
place.)

Re: [LegacyUG] Old Source Detail associated with newly Merged Master Sources

2008-06-19 Thread Dede Holden
Janis,
Based on what Geoff and Dave B have said, I think my source and
details were pretty clear cut - no conflicts so everything combined
like it was supposed to. Or maybe it was just beginner's luck! After
reading Geoff's comments and Dave B.'s observations, I've gone back
and checked everything just to be sure I didn't overlook something
that might have gotten lost in translation. I'm a little nervous
about trying to combine any more sources, since everyone has not had
the same results that I had.

I'm like you - I do love the new Sourcewriter. I am able to be more
consistent in the way I am entering my data. I finally feel confident
that I'm doing things the right way - not just feeling my way through
and making it up as I go.

I am trying to standardize everything. I am trying to replace

can't read and write

to

unable to read or write

(I have both version in my notes and I want only one version)

I am trying to use the search and replace and it isn't working.

I pull up the search and here is what I put...

Find Where-event notes
Find What- can't read and write
Replacement textunable to read or write

As far as the check off boxes I have tried every combination and
nothing works. All I get is 0 matches.

I remember this being asked, but don't recall it ever being answered.

If one has OPTIONS, CUSTOMIZE, SOURCES and has "SOURCEWRITER" ticked in
lower left, then you are "forced" to always use Sourcewriter. No way to use

the "basic" system when you are updating someone - without leaving that
person and coming back to these options and then returning to the person.

HOWEVER, if you select BASIC SOURCE SYSTEMS on the options screen, AND if
you check the box "ask which system to use . . . ", then when you try to add

a new source you get a pop-up box that asks which method you want to use
(Basic or SourceWriter).

LEGACY Support - maybe a better way??: There's a lot of space by that "ADD
A NEW SOURCE" button. Why not make 2 buttons there:
ADD A NEW SOURCE-BASIC
ADD A NEW SOURCE-SOURCEWRITER

[LegacyUG] search and replace

2008-06-19 Thread Michele Lewis

I am trying to standardize everything. I am trying to replace

can't read and write

to

unable to read or write

(I have both version in my notes and I want only one version)

I am trying to use the search and replace and it isn't working.

I pull up the search and here is what I put...

Find Where-event notes
Find What- can't read and write
Replacement textunable to read or write

As far as the check off boxes I have tried every combination and nothing
works. All I get is 0 matches.

Re: [LegacyUG] Version 7 Lat/Long format

2008-06-19 Thread Robert57P via Gmail
I was hoping someone else would answer 'cause I didn't know. But I didn't
see any answer so I did some playing.

Rather than calling the conversion tool from the menu, here's one way to do
it, but it doesn't put it into the "IN" or "PLACE" field - it puts it into
the ADDRESS field instead:

* Edit the person
* Edit the event
* Click the house icon
* Fill in info if its blank (LEGACY SUPPORT - why isn't the city, state,
county, country automatically passed to and/or from this box to the IN or
PLACE field?)

* Click the "world/binoculars" icon if desired
* Click the calculator icon
* Put your decimal value in
* Click CONVERT
* Click LAT 1 to put it into the top LATITUDE box, or click LONG 1 to put it
in the LONGITUDE box

* repeat for the other LAT/LONG if needed
* Click RETURN 1ST have this carry into the address box

Ah ha - just found this method also - puts it into the IN or PLACE box:
* Edit the person
* Edit the event if applicable
* Click the down arrow next to the IN or PLACE field ("IN" for 4 primary,
"PLACE" for event)
* You are now in the master location list with the place highlighted (so you
could probably start here???)

* Click EDIT
* Click the calculator (bottom center of box)
* (I can't figure out how to get the current figures into the Deg/Min/Sec
box without copy/paste - but you aren't looking for this anyway, right?)

* Put in your decimal LATITUDE degrees in the DECIMAL box
* Click CONVERT
* Click LAT 1 to put it into the appropriate box in top-left
* Put in your decimal LONGITUDE degrees in the DECIMAL box
* click CONVERT
* Click LONG 1 to put it into the appropriate box in top left
* Click RETURN 1ST to send this pair to the MASTER LIST
* Click SAVE
* Click YES to change all
A lot of clicking, but no copy/paste

This individual's father was an import from a gedcom that had a WFT est for
a death date. As there was a firm date in the Alt. Death Event, I used that
to replace the WFT est. Now I can't get the problem off the report!

Here's what the PPR says:

Birth Date after a Parent's Death Date.
[b. 28-29 Jun 1860 and fd. 27 Apr 1865]
The birth date for this individual is either after the mother's death date
or more than ten months after the
death date of the father. Check the dates involved and verify that this
person is a child of the indicated

parents.

I just tried merging it the opposite direction, but it won't merge - I get a
message saying that there are citation details involved. When I forced it,
the citation details were indeed preserved, but the Master Source had not
preserved the Source Citation formatting - so I ended up with an incomplete
source.

DeDe (and Gail),

That's exactly what I did, except with a census source. Gail, is that what
you did when you tried to combine an old source with a new source, and lost
the citation detail?

Just trying to pinpoint the problem, possibly to a particular template.

It's encouraging to know that DeDe was successful at this.

Janis,

The source was a book compiled by my great uncle. I had BMD info for each
particular person in the Source Details. I also had a paragraph from the
Preface in the Master Source Text/Comments.

>From the Master Source List, I created a new source using the SourceWriter
Template. I rewrote the Master Source Text, editing just a little from what
I had written originally. As far as I can remember now, I clicked on the
new source first, chose "Combine Highlighted Source" then clicked on the old
source and then clicked again. This source was attached to several areas,
Name, Birth, Marriage, and some Residence events. I have just checked one
more time and all the details are still there, just as I entered them on
Legacy 6.

Hope this helps.

Assuming moving from 5 to 7 is not different to moving from 6 to 7, you
simply download and install 7 and then open your old v5 file in the
usual way and you will be told it needs to be upgraded to v7 and once
this is done you will not be able to open it again in v5.

If you had 5 in the default location and install 7 to the default it was
"overwrite" your v5 and retain all your user settings etc.  If you want
to carry on having access to v5, keep a copy of your v5 file (it's a
good idea to back it up before installing 7 anyway) and install 7 in a
different directory.

John,

Did you set them in Options>Headers/Footers. There you can include Page Number,
Compiler's Information and "published using Legacy" (or something like that).
If this appears in the preview but not in the printed copies then you need to

When you open the Family Group report, click on "Report Options" at the

On the Sources tab of the Report Options for the Family Group Record, you'll
notice that there are no choices to print footnotes. Endnotes are the only
option for Family Group Records. Just make sure that the "Print source
citations" option is turned on.

I know, but it is still a lot safer than IE. I just hope the request

Enough said though. I will not reply to any more comments about this topic

Has anyone else had this error message?

It occurred when I went to edit a source detail that had been entered in
V.6. The Source text is
680 lines of text and I had about 2 lines of text in comments. When
selecting edit detail a pop up
box appears with the above error message and upon closing the pop up the
edit detail form opens with
the top half distorted and, upon closing that, the program shuts down.
Deleting either the source
text OR the comments text eliminated the problem.

It behaves as if it has exceeded a maximum value, such as an object having
an interger designation
rather than a long, causing an overflow access. I have deleted the comments
and all is functioning,
however there appears to be an underlying problem which needs attention.

RE: [LegacyUG] Source Citation Original Marriage Cert

2008-06-19 Thread Kirsten Bowman
Denise:

What Penny describes as the Texas procedure for marriage licenses and
certificates sounds very much like that followed in the past in California
and Kansas (although by now it's probably streamlined and automated somehow)
and, in fact, my own originals were folded to mailing size at one time. So
I agree with what she's said, but still feel that the Artifact template in
Legacy is the best citation fit. And while my own examples probably do
carry a notation on the backs about where they were recorded, I'm not
inclined to dismantle some rather expensive framing jobs for the sake of
getting that additional bit of info for a citation

It seems very odd that, since marriage licenses and certificates are a
fairly common "family paper" and that the same procedure was apparently
followed in at least a few states, if not all, Mills didn't include a
specific citation format for them or at least indicate how they should be
treated. Perhaps Legacy's Source Writer needs to expand on _EE_?

Denise, I think I'm going to have to disagree on this question with others
who have replied thus far.

Birth and death certificates, at least in Texas, are now and have always
been handled a little differently than marriage certificates. I don't know
if this holds true for other states - probably not in all of them.

I have three original "marriage certificates" from the State of Texas: my
own, my parents, and my paternal grandparents.I also have a certified
copy of my own marriage cert. and am, therefore, able to compare to see the
differences.

In Texas, these are what are issued as "marriage licenses". Couple goes to
the County Clerk to get one; once the prerequisites are met, it's signed &
issued by said County Clerk, and the couple takes it with them to whomever
is going to perform the wedding ceremony. The person who performs the rites
(whether minister or other) then signs and fills in the date and location of
the ceremony and he/she sends it back to the issuing County Clerk for
recording. The Co. Clerk then records it - (by making an exact transcript
that looks very much like the original except that the signatures (of the
minister/JP and the County Clerk) are typed in instead of actually signed.
The Clerk then mails the original back to the couple. When a certified copy
is later issued, it's not a photocopy of the original, it's a copy of the
transcribed record held in the Clerk's office (duly signed & stamped by the
current County Clerk or authorized personnel as being authentic).

On the back of the **originals** is where you find where exactly this
marriage is recorded in Texas. It will say something like:
Filed the 9th day of April 1935
W.A. Tittle (actual signature)
Clerk County Court of Terry County
Recorded in Book 3, Page 208 of Marriage Records

This is a long way around to say: You bet I would put the citation in
stating who holds the original. I record the provenance of an original
marriage record just as I would the provenance of a family Bible. I
certainly will find a way (when I re-enter these via Source Writer) to
include where the certificate was recorded. Others will be able to find it
from that; but it needs to be noted that the original still exists and who
has it.

I haven't looked at this in Legacy 7, but I would think it would be
government records because it's issued under the authority of a state;
however, unless I can find a way to note both where the certificate is
recorded (e.g. County name, Marriage Book #, and page) plus who holds the
original, then I'll have to re-think it.

Just my long-winded thoughts on the subject,
Penny

RE: [LegacyUG] Source Citation Original Marriage Cert

2008-06-19 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
Kirsten,

Yes, Legacy's SourceWriter is and will continue to expand on Evidence
Explained. We are currently working on adding all of the media that were not
modeled with each individual model in EE. We'll release this in free
updates. We are also making progress right now on adding specific templates
for UK BMDs and census records. These will come with time. As Elizabeth
Mills states in her book, there's no way that she could provide models for
all sources throughout the world, but she did do a good job in my opinion of
providing the needed background. Legacy will make this easier though, both
now and in future development.

It would seem to me that if you use an original source, and in this
case all of my data was imported using GEDCOM, followed by two days
of 'playing around' and saving the result, then I am using Source
Writer.

Not exactly. Your source already existed, therefore when you edit
it, you use the version 6 method of creating/assigning/citing
sources. If you create a new source, but copy bits and pieces of the
existing source, then you'd be using the version 7 methods i.e.
Source Writer.

I am a new user of Legacy and just starting to figure things out.
Is this what the Source Conversion tool is supposed to do?

If they ever figure out how to get it done without causing an
extreme amount of furore on this list from people that didn't like
the way the conversion was done.

My thoughts here are: KISS. Keep it simple! When creating a new,
Source Writer derived source, allow the user to select an existing
Master Source and display the details (read-only) alongside the
entry fields for the new source. Then, let the user copy and paste
between the two panels. Result: any cock-ups are due to the user,
not Legacy.

In one of the emails I wrote yesterday I included Dave B.'s (programmer)

DeDe (and Gail),

That's exactly what I did, except with a census source. Gail, is that what
you did when you tried to combine an old source with a new source, and lost
the citation detail?

Just trying to pinpoint the problem, possibly to a particular template.

It's encouraging to know that DeDe was successful at this.

RE: [LegacyUG] Source Citation Original Marriage Cert

2008-06-19 Thread D Levenick
Penny,
There is always more than one way to see a situation. Your reasoning makes a
good point. I didn't realize that the information itself would be different
on the certificate I hold from the court document, but now I see that they
could each yield more or less information. Thanks for the explanation of how
the information travels along the line. Perhaps my marriage certificates are
Artifacts, and when/if I view/acquire official court recordings those will
be another source recorded as GovRecords. Just a thought.

Don't be too confident about the security of Firefox. When it was a new

now popular enough to be targeted by the hackers and even the latest

Subject: [LegacyUG] run-time error '6': overflow

Thanks, Steve,
It sounds like it would be good to record these "privately held" docs as
"Gov" because that is where another researcher would find the official legal
documentation. I hadn't thought of it that way, but it makes perfect sense.

Denise,

The actual "Record" is held by the Government office and on
marriage/death/birth they issue an "original" certificate to who ever and
after that they issue a certified "True Copy" or in Australia you can get an
"Extract of Entry" which is an abbreviated version of the "Original" record
held by the Government Office.

Again I think it comes down to how the individual likes to record the
Certificate in Legacy, a friend said as he has the "Original" death
certificate of his parents so he records it as "Privately Held Materials".
Myself I am recording the Certificate & it's details as "Gov Records" and
the state in which it is held so that down the track if my "original"
certificate is lost then who ever is looking at my Records will know which
State & Govt Office to apply for another copy if they want it.

I am stuck on this question. I have in my possession three original marriage
certificates which appear to be issued by individual states. They give the
name of the couple, date, and signature of a public official. I have never
requested "official" documentation from the government offices.

When I try to enter this as a Master Source, I am given options of Church
Records or Government Records. I was using Gov Records. However, in
reviewing EE, I wonder if they qualify as "Privately Held Materials" and
should be cited as Artifacts.

any thoughts on this?

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy V7 Australian/NZ Version

2008-06-19 Thread Colin Liddell
Hi Tracy,

Sorry to get you all impatient.{:-)

I had another look at Gould's website and found with further inspection that an
Australian/N.Z. version only meant you get some Australian/N.Z. Cds in the
deal, an off that I will not be taking up.
As I have commented in other posts, the wording on Gould's website was a tad
imbiguous until you looked further.

2008-06-19 Thread Colin Liddell

Hi Jenny,

I went back and had another look at Gould's website and found additional
info on what they were advertising and it read altogether different.
In my opinion the initial wording was a tad ambiguous and led the reader to
believe they were getting a more Australian/N.Z. orientated program, not
so..{;-(

When installing version 7, I chose the Australian English.

Thank you for your comments.

I don't understand this as Legacy's website makes no mention of an A/NZ
specific version, only that the English version includes 4 language
 options, which include Australian English.

 See

 http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/InternationalLegacyVersions.asp

I have a vague idea that somewhere along the installation process I had
to select which language version I wanted to use, but I could be quite
 wrong about that.

I suggest you take it up with Support.

Colin, read further on the Gould website and you will find the following:

HOW DOES THIS DIFFER FROM LEGACY FAMILY TREE 7.0 DELUXE?
In short ... it doesn't ... this one just comes with extras. The program
is

the same in both packages, and this comes with the manual in PDF form, as
opposed to a printed one available with Legacy Family Tree 7.0 Deluxe. The
Australia/New Zealand edition will come as a boxed product, and will
include

the following as extras available in this version of Legacy only:

Australian Shipping 1788-1968 (CD) - A collection of over 240,000 arrivals
and departures of ships at Australian ports between 1788 and 1968
Australian Handbook 1904 (CD) - 1008 pages packed with all kinds of useful
and interesting information relating to Australia in 1904
New Zealand Post Office Directory 1900 (Wise) (CD) - A valuable resource
of

names, addresses and occupations of those in New Zealand in 1900
Online Resources (CD) - A directory of some of the best genealogy sites in
Australia, New Zealand and around the world
WorldVitalRecords.com.au - 3 months access to the Australian, New Zealand,
and a selection of the UK collections included on this website
Online Learning Centre - Useful tips and resources to help you with all
your

 genealogy needs

I wouldn't have much use for those added products.

I have just been on the Gould Genealogy website (the people who sell all
things genealogical) and they are advertising version 7 of Legacy.

The interesting thing is they speak of the Australian/New Zealand version
which is supposed to be on the market in July.

I posted a query on the Group some weeks ago about this and did not get
one

 reply!

The following is the advert on Gould's website.

 Legacy 7 is Released
It's been a long time coming, but Legacy 7 has finally been released. We
have received stock of both the program and the upgrade, and are taking
orders for the Australia/New Zealand version of it which is due for
release

 in July.
 Have I missed something?

Has this been written about on the group previously

If there is an Australian/NZ version coming out, I would certainly like a
 copy.

Question is; As I have already bought version 7, will it be an update or
will we have to pay for the new version?

I look forward to clarification on this matter.

Dede,

Can you tell me exactly what you did? What kind of source was it, and in
what order did you merge them? I took the old one, clicked on "combine
highlighted source with another in list" - then clicked on the new
SourceWriter source. This resulted in the loss of the citation details, but
comments tabs remained intact.

Since I did it with a particular census, and the census year and county, and
the household data is in the Event Notes area, all I have lost is the
township, p. no.'s, etc - easily replaced.

Gail and Janis,

I have done the same thing. I took a source that had lots of
different source details for several generations. I created a new
Master Source using the Source Writer. I combined the two. My
details stayed exactly where they were supposed to! I did not have to

details that I spent DAYS entering.

As soon as they tweak the subsequent citation problem, this is going

It would seem to me that if you use an original source, and in this case
all of my data was imported using GEDCOM, followed by two days of
'playing around' and saving the result, then I am using Source Writer.

Not exactly. Your source already existed, therefore when you edit it,
you use the version 6 method of creating/assigning/citing sources. If
you create a new source, but copy bits and pieces of the existing
source, then you'd be using the version 7 methods i.e. Source Writer.

I am a new user of Legacy and just starting to figure things out.
Is this what the Source Conversion tool is supposed to do?

If they ever figure out how to get it done without causing an extreme
amount of furore on this list from people that didn't like the way the
conversion was done.

My thoughts here are: KISS. Keep it simple! When creating a new, Source
Writer derived source, allow the user to select an existing Master
Source and display the details (read-only) alongside the entry fields
for the new source. Then, let the user copy and paste between the two
panels. Result: any cock-ups are due to the user, not Legacy.

Re: [LegacyUG] Strange happenings on Individual Information Screen

2008-06-19 Thread Bruce Jones
Look in Options, Customize, Other
look on the right side about half way down for Toolbar Picture Sizes
Do you have "Automatic (depends on size of window)" checked?
This works on the Family View screen, but then I saw you were
referring to the individual screen.
It doesn't seem to help on that screen if the window is too small.
Bug?

RE: [LegacyUG] Cannot get my Legacy7 customer id number recognized bu Legacy 7

2008-06-19 Thread ronald ferguson

Kathy,

I do not know the answer to your question (I would be checking with Legacy to
ensure that I have a valid number) but I do know that it has nothing to do with
the Registry.
