Sandy,

At the end of your (and everybody else's) email are Legacy contact numbers, one
of which is "on-line technical support, click it and then select "Error by
number". Or use the Legacy Home tab on your program and on the right hand side
click "on-line trouble shooting help", or go to

RE: [LegacyUG] Warning, Storage Disks

2008-11-08 Thread Toni Allen
Mary,
I thought your idea of changing was good, but I couldn't get that change to
put the back up file in My Documents ...
I went to the back up section in files, and just clicked on the My Documents
icon on the left side of the screen, and had the back up program create the
Backup file in My Documents, then did the back up. I went out in My
Computer and checked to see if the file was there and it was ... Much
Better than moving the file
Thanks for the thought it sent me in the right track!
I enjoy Mozy too! Makes me feel so secure and it's done every day without

Thanks for the feed-back! I am paying a small fee for www.mozy.com and
have been very satisfied with it! I just had to realize that it will
not back up what I do not tell it to back up. I like the suggestion of
making sure all files I want backed up go to User-Mary-Documents. I
just figured out how to make that adjustment in
Legacy-Options-Customize under Locations. I changed the Default
Location of family files to c:\Users\Mary\Documents\Legacy Data - a
new file I created in Documents. That should do it - right?

The only rumour I have is that 8 is one greater than 7 and so it is likely
that the next version will be called Legacy 8.

Give us a break! The Legacy staff are still trying to sort out the wrinkles

However, two programs I use, Legacy being one of them, store my data

a laptop so it worked out, but I am now going into Mozy and figuring
out how to back up the Data files from Legacy.

Re: [LegacyUG] Census records: Master Source v. Detail Source

2008-11-08 Thread Pauline B. Cramer
Ward has brought up a good question about what we can expect about
subsequent citations after the bugs are fixed..

What I would expect is, that, for details that were entered in several
places using the clipboard, and not changed, Legacy should recognize
"subsequent" citations. But, if the source details were typed by hand,
they may not actually be the same, byte by byte, and Legacy would not
recognize a "subsequent" citation, even though the user might think the
citations may look the same. This may be a source of frustration for
user who may have made extensive use of the detail source field and may
not used the clipboard.

So when the bugs are fixed, if you used the same exact census detail
source, for name, est birth date, and residence and occupation events
for one individual, you might expect one detail census source citation
for a census year and 3 ibids? And if this was for a family group
report, you might expect one detailed census source citation per census
year and a lot of ibids for the whole family?

However, I personally have never used the Clipboard or SourceWriter, and
had never used the detail source fields until recent months, so my
experience with printing census detail citations is quite limited.

Pauline

JLB wrote:
Obviously, I can't answer your questions. My answer was in response
to some-one asking about changing source details where there's an
error. I would suggest trying it with some aspect of source detail
that has been used only a few times so the results can be checked
easily. The Search & Replace function breaks down all the Source
Detail fields, so it should be easy to experiment with.

In regards to making multiple changes in Source Detail, (an earlier
concern on this thread) this is possible through Search and Replace.
The fields there are broken down in a fair bit of detail so it
should be manageable regardless of where your 'error' is that needs
correcting.

It doesn't sound like you're doing anything wrong in correcting a
typo in
source details. It can be a tricky process for lumpers who include
the
detail text and does teach careful proofreading before beginning to
attach a

source to multiple records.

When it comes to lumping vs splitting, I think a great deal depends
on how
you intend to use your data and the size of your database. With
just over
7,000 individual records I have slightly over 300 sources. If I
split the
census listings at the address or household level as you suggest,
this could
increase to thousands of master sources. By being very careful
about naming
conventions, the list would still maintain order and would, as you
say, be
relatively manageable. Problems would only occur when producing
any sort of

material that includes those sources, whether it be a website, book,
multi-generational report, gedcom, bibliography, etc. In those
cases the
source list would be overwhelming. Considering the current problem
with

source repetition in v.7 it's difficult to see the ramifications but
hopefully that will be corrected at some point.

The core issue is, What do you intend to do with your database and
how will

that product be impacted by either lumping or splitting?

I'm probably missing something because I have yet to fathom any use for the
subsequent citation. If many data fields are linked to the same citation,
say #1, then each instance in a report would be keyed to the footnote (or
endnote) #1, so how or when would the subsequent citation come into play? I
think there would be no need. As you say, with the source-related bugs in
report generation it's impossible to see how it would work but I'm also
curious about the final (corrected) product.

But once it is fixed, what can we expect? How will Legacy detect that a
citation is 'subsequent'? Will it compare every byte with what has already
been cited? Or will it somehow keep track of source details that were
copied/placed via the clipboard (and not edited after)?

Re: [LegacyUG] Census records: Master Source v. Detail Source

2008-11-08 Thread JLB
Obviously, I can't answer your questions. My answer was in response to
some-one asking about changing source details where there's an error. I
would suggest trying it with some aspect of source detail that has been
used only a few times so the results can be checked easily. The Search
& Replace function breaks down all the Source Detail fields, so it
should be easy to experiment with.

In regards to making multiple changes in Source Detail, (an earlier
concern on this thread) this is possible through Search and Replace.
The fields there are broken down in a fair bit of detail so it should
be manageable regardless of where your 'error' is that needs correcting.

It doesn't sound like you're doing anything wrong in correcting a

source to multiple records.

Problems would only occur when producing any
sort of

material that includes those sources, whether it be a website, book,
multi-generational report, gedcom, bibliography, etc. In those
cases the
source list would be overwhelming. Considering the current problem
with

source repetition in v.7 it's difficult to see the ramifications but
hopefully that will be corrected at some point.

The core issue is, What do you intend to do with your database and
how will

that product be impacted by either lumping or splitting?

Subject: [LegacyUG] Census records: Master Source v. Detail Source

Hi everyone,

It will be much later on in the weekend before I am able to read the
replies
to this, but hear goes (again). I have really tried to look back in
the
archives to read the long thread on 'lumping and splitting' but it
is no

longer there.

When Legacy 7 was released with the new sourcewriter tool, I made two
decisions. Firstly, that I would convert my sources to the 'new
system' and
secondly to try and lump my sources together, taking the advice in
Evidence

Explained on page 259:

"Most researchers find that the Source List is not the place to list
census
entries by household or personal name. That level of detail in a
Source List

soon makes the list unmanageable."

I am generally very pleased with the new sourcewriter, but have got
myself
in a real mess with lumping sources together. I just wondered how
others
were managing with this and if I am doing something drastically
wrong. I am

in the process of splitting all my sources once more, coming to the
conclusion that I am certainly not one of those 'Most researchers'.

Example: If I lump together all my Staffordshire census details for
1901, I
may have 10 different addresses. Let's say, there are 5 people
living at
each address - that's 50 people (some which may have duplicate
names). I
have been very careful in transcribing all the census information
and have
attached all the .jpg files with the digital copies of the census to
the

detail source. I have carefully used the clipboard to copy the census
details linked to the appropriate 'events'. I may have cited the
'detail
source' for one person often three or more times - to link to
occupation,
address, name/alt.name, birth etc. All is going fine, and I finish
the job.
The next day I notice I have made a transcription error in
transcribing the

details from the census at one location and need to put it right.

If I go the Master source list and find all the people linked to the

It doesn't sound like you're doing anything wrong in correcting a typo in
source details. It can be a tricky process for lumpers who include the
detail text and does teach careful proofreading before beginning to
attach a

source to multiple records.

When it comes to lumping vs splitting, I think a great deal depends on
how
you intend to use your data and the size of your database. With just
over
7,000 individual records I have slightly over 300 sources. If I split
the
census listings at the address or household level as you suggest, this
could
increase to thousands of master sources. By being very careful about
naming
conventions, the list would still maintain order and would, as you say,
be
relatively manageable. Problems would only occur when producing any sort
of

material that includes those sources, whether it be a website, book,
multi-generational report, gedcom, bibliography, etc. In those cases the
source list would be overwhelming. Considering the current problem with
source repetition in v.7 it's difficult to see the ramifications but
hopefully that will be corrected at some point.

The core issue is, What do you intend to do with your database and how
will

that product be impacted by either lumping or splitting?

Subject: [LegacyUG] Census records: Master Source v. Detail Source

Hi everyone,

It will be much later on in the weekend before I am able to read the
replies

to this, but hear goes (again). I have really tried to look back in the
archives to read the long thread on 'lumping and splitting' but it is no
longer there.

When Legacy 7 was released with the new sourcewriter tool, I made two
decisions. Firstly, that I would convert my sources to the 'new system'
and
secondly to try and lump my sources together, taking the advice in
Evidence

Explained on page 259:

"Most researchers find that the Source List is not the place to list
census
entries by household or personal name. That level of detail in a Source
List

soon makes the list unmanageable."

I am generally very pleased with the new sourcewriter, but have got
myself

in a real mess with lumping sources together. I just wondered how others
were managing with this and if I am doing something drastically wrong. I
am

in the process of splitting all my sources once more, coming to the
conclusion that I am certainly not one of those 'Most researchers'.

Example: If I lump together all my Staffordshire census details for 1901,
I

may have 10 different addresses. Let's say, there are 5 people living at
each address - that's 50 people (some which may have duplicate names). I
have been very careful in transcribing all the census information and
have

attached all the .jpg files with the digital copies of the census to the
detail source. I have carefully used the clipboard to copy the census
details linked to the appropriate 'events'. I may have cited the 'detail
source' for one person often three or more times - to link to occupation,
address, name/alt.name, birth etc. All is going fine, and I finish the
job.
The next day I notice I have made a transcription error in transcribing
the

details from the census at one location and need to put it right.

If I go the Master source list and find all the people linked to the
Master

source, I get 50 people. Firstly I have to locate which 5 people were
living at the particular address where I want to make the correction.
Having done that I have to go to each individuals record and either make
the

alteration (often 3 or more times for each person, as I have cited the
census for address, alt.name, occupation etc) or make the alteration once
and use the clipboard. Even if I use the clipboard I have to alter it
for

each individual person because the ID of the person changes w

Or move your Legacy\Data folder under My Documents.

OT: Another folder you might want to consider backing up is C:\Documents
and Settings\\Application Data. Some programs insist on
storing things here (like Mozilla, Firefox, Thunderbird).

Leo,

I have not checked with Legacy on it's own, but it sounds reasonable. On
Windows compacting saves signicant amounts for most databases and programs -
even compacting emails. I use CCleaner about once a month and generally reckon
to save a similar amount of space.

Hello,

A word to the wise. I am using www.mozy.com as my external backup.
Three weeks ago a power outage caused my computer to crash. It is now
repaired (one of 2 internal hard drives had died). Meanwhile, I went
to Mozy to restore files. All my Document files restored very nicely.
However, two programs I use, Legacy being one of them, store my data
on the c:\ drive within the program. I had not set Mozy to back up my
program files, only my Document files. Luckily I had another backup on
a laptop so it worked out, but I am now going into Mozy and figuring
out how to back up the Data files from Legacy.

[LegacyUG] Compact Family File

2008-11-08 Thread leo macdonald

Last evening after performing a backup of my Legacy files I did a comparison of
it to the size of some files that I had backed up earlier this month.
On Oct 15 the file size was 45.0 MB and on Oct 16 it was 38.0 MB.
>From Oct 16th to Oct 22 it grew to 38.4 MB.
My next backup was on Oct 27, which was 32.8 MB.
This was when I began to panic and thought that I must have lost some
information in my program. Then I remembered that I had done a file maintence
and the compact family file procedures a couple times this past month, but I
could not believe that it could have reduced the file size that much.
I copied these four files to a new folder, renamed them, I closed my present
family file and then opened each of the renamed files by their date 15, 16, 22,
27, and checked the number of Individuals, the number of surnames, number of
families.
There was an increase of people in each file, I do know that I had located some
names that were entered into my program twice so I corrected this by unlinking
and deleting a few names, less than six that is.
I had no idea that by performing the compact family file procedure it would
reduce the file size by that much. My question, is this normal and how often
should we be compacting our files?

Re: [LegacyUG] Pictures in Reports

2008-11-08 Thread Brian/Support

Barbara,

Vital Event (birth, chr, death and burial) pictures can be turned on in
the Individual and the Family Group sheet reports so your cemetery
picture will show up in those reports. This applies to Version 6.0 as
well as Legacy 7.0.

They do not appear for the narrative reports such as Ancestor,
Descendant and Descendant Narrative because the vital events are all
combined into a single paragraph. There is an enhancement on the books
to include those in the narrative reports.

Re: [LegacyUG] Pictures in Reports

2008-11-08 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
Yes, Barbara, it is a bit outrageous but until other users put in a request for
better media handling, it will probably remain low on the priority list.

I create my own events so I can control how they are presented in my reports so
attaching photos to events works OK for me. I don't use any of the hard coded
fields except for the basic vitals entries.

And my one personal desire for Legacy is that we have control over the size of
the photos printed in Legacy. For the most part, they are simply too tiny to
see, except for a head and shoulders crop of a person. I'd like the OPTION of
choosing to print selected photo in reports at their native size; to set the
print size of each photo when attached to an event. I have sent in my request
for this option for several years but so far, no luck.

I would think, with everyone using digital cameras, that the photo insertion
capabilities would carry more importance. The inserted photos make for a much
more interesting report and to be truthful, it was the main reason I moved to
Legacy from another genealogy software program some years back.

Please send in your request for better media handling capabilities via the
"Legacy Home" tab, 'suggest a new feature' under Support on the left. Maybe if
enough people let the authors know it is important to them, it will be moved up
on the priorities list.

Mary

Have the developers ever commented on this? Do they intend to fix it in

RE: [LegacyUG] Radio button?

2008-11-08 Thread ronald ferguson

"Radio buttons" are circles usually white and usually with the centre filled in
black for one of them to show it is set. Only one can be set at a time, thus
clicking one to set it will unset another.Ron Ferguson

What do you mean "radio button?"

In a message dated 11/7/2008 6:02:24 P.M. Pacific Standard Time,
[EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:
First go to Options>Customise>Sources. On the bottom left click the top

Writer
(and have none in the format) you can unchecked the check box "Ask me which".
When you click to add a source the old format will be displayed.

You should note that the option is not given at all if the "Source Writer"
radio button is set - not for me anyhow!

Is it correct to assume that version 7 would have corrected this
pretty basic problem? If so, I may need to update sooner than I
thought!
