RE: [LegacyUG] Uncle married to her husbands' brother by mistake!

2009-02-25 Thread ronald ferguson

Firstly, unlink from the wrong partner and link to the correct one. Similarly
if the children need moving then do the same for them - unlink from the wrong
parents and link to the new ones. For both it would seem that your will be
linking to existing person/parents.

[LegacyUG] Legacy Crashing when using Master Locations List

2009-02-25 Thread Jennifer Brown
I have Legacy version 7.0.0.86 installed on the C drive of two laptops. I keep
my family file on a memory stick and use it between the two computers. My main
laptop runs Windows Vista and the other Windows XP.

The day before yesterday the Windows XP laptop crashed a couple of times while
my file was open. The family file seems to be fine, but when I started using it
on the Vista machine yesterday Legacy crashed every time I tried to click on a
location in the Master locations list.

I tried it again today (in case the computer fairies fixed it for me overnight)
and it is doing the same thing. I see that in the Legacy folder on the C drive
there are files named location.usr and mapping.usr. I'm wondering if these have
anything to do with it? Maybe I'm making updates on one PC that aren't being
transferred to the other?

Has anybody else had problems using the software on more than one computer? Or
maybe it's because I'm running Vista and XP? Or maybe because of the crash?

Any thoughts/suggestions gratefully received! I had a quick search on the
Legacy site but couldn't find anything but maybe it's one to log with support.

Thanks,

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Crashing when using Master Locations List

2009-02-25 Thread Jennifer Brown

To clarify what happens -

I click on the drop down arrow to open the locations list. It opens fine and
the map displays. I then click on a location and the locations list box
'fades' - I don't know exactly how to describe it. Instead of displaying the
locations box with the map I get a very faint box with no map. No error
messages. It sits for a couple of seconds and then I get a Windows message
that Legacy has stopped working and Windows will check for a solution.
Legacy shuts down and I have to restart the programme.

Jennifer,

OK, The message that comes up would normally say something like "xx Error
at 0x56786754 etc". Any chance of repeating the problem and sending this
information?

Meanwhile, I have often found that in this situation closing down the computer,
leaving it for 5 minutes, and restarting can resolve this sort of problem.

I presume you are asking if there is a specific Notes clipboard, like
the Source clipboard. There isn't, you just use the standard Windows

[LegacyUG] Saving files

2009-02-25 Thread Barbara
I'm ashamed to asked this question, but have to. How do I merge a Legacy file
saved to my "C:" drive with an actual Legacy file? Somehow I did not backup my
file to a Legacy file under the Legacy icon. It was backed up to my "C:" .

Then the next question is how do I back up each time to both my the Legacy icon
file and then backup to my C: so I have it in both places. I also do it to a
"memory stick".

Thanks - you all are great in helping us "new users" out.

RE: [LegacyUG] Saving files

2009-02-25 Thread ronald ferguson

Barb,

I am not quite sure I understand, but here goes.

When you amend your Legacy database this is saved on the fly - not backed-up -
as a file such as FileName.fdb. This is the file which you click on to open it
in Legacy and has the Legacy Shield as its icon.

When you close Legacy after changes it asks if you wish to back-up. If you
answer "yes" (as you should) then it creates a zip file in C\Legacy\Data. To
restore this you need to use File>Restore Family file.

The two files are quite separate and it seems to me that all is as it should be.

I don't understand what you mean by "under the Legacy icon." When you
create a backup file it will *usually* be saved to your C:\ drive, and
that is where your Legacy program and your current Family file is
*usually* saved. On what drive is your current Family File?

You appear to be saying you want to merge a backup file into your
current Family File? If that is so, why? You don't usually need to do
anything with a backup unless something goes wrong with your current
file, in which case it is usual to revert to the backup copy, *not*
merge the backup into the current file.

When you backup your Family File you are given the option to "Select
Name and Location ...". You can back up as often as you want to as many
different locations as you want.

Ah ... it just occurs to me that you might be thinking you need to SAVE
your current file each time you exit, separately to creating a backup
copy. This is not so - the data is saved "on the fly", as you press
Save on each screen. There is purpose served by saving again when you
exit the program, only to create a backup file for use in case your
current file becomes corrupted.

RE: [LegacyUG] Synchronise Files

2009-02-25 Thread Christine Gibbins
Hi
I always make sure that the files are up to date on my main PC, then
copy to laptop via the network using Comodo Back Up, a free program.
When using my laptop away from base I just take rough notes using Word.
Also use my USB sick.

Looking forward to hearing more about file Sync though.

Best Wishes,

Sorry ... getting a bit off-topic ... but AFAIK Legacy is not

Re: [LegacyUG] Importing Gedcoms from FTL GenCircles

2009-02-25 Thread Connie Sheets
If anyone has answered David's question, it disappeared into cyberspace before
reaching me.

I'm not sure how much help I will be, as I'm not familiar with FTL Gencircles,
but here goes:

If you can make a gedcom file of your data in FTL Gencircles, you should be
able import it into Legacy. Go ahead and experiment since you already have
Legacy. You can always create a new Legacy file if you don't like how the
first one turned out. You may have to tweak some settings a bit, and you may
have to do some data cleanup in Legacy, but I know of no reason why it wouldn't
work. (The whole purpose of gedcom is to allow movement of data between
programs, regardless of the program).

If FTL Gencircles doesn't have the capability of making a gedcom for export,
then I'm at a loss. That would be FTL Gencircles problem, not a Legacy problem.

[LegacyUG] Atta boy award

2009-02-25 Thread Gary Crull
Been working with a fellow researcher recently to try and get him to
switch from FTM to Legacy. He said of late he was getting more and more
dissatisfied with FTM. Directed him to the Legacy web site to scope out
the specs and download the free version to at least see what Legacy could
do. His concern was getting his files successfully transfered from FTM to
Legacy.

Got the following message from him this morning.."Received my Deluxe
Version of Legacy today. Actually the numbers to unlock it. Still playing
and reading. It is so much better than FTM. Thanks"

Just thought this was some good news to be shared with the group. Legacy
just keeps growing...one here, one there..!

Ronald,

There are no Legacy error messages and no warning the programme is about to
stop. The Master Locations List window stops working and Legacy hangs. This
windows message then appears:

"Legacy Genealogy Software for Windows has stopped working. A problem caused
the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and
notify you if a solution is available".

As I said in my original message I left the laptop overnight and tried again
today to see if the problem was still there, so closing it down doesn't seem to
be the answer.

If I don't open the Master Locations List the software is working fine.

I think this is obviously a query for support - I just wondered before I
contacted them whether anybody had experienced the same problem. There seems to
be a wealth of experience on this list.

Thanks anyway for the assistance, much appreciated.

I am not splitting hairs when I say that Jennifer's program did not crash - it

Jennifer,

It wasn't a Legacy message/number but a Windows one which often is available in
such circumstances.

I'm using IE 7.0.6 - it was working fine last evening, and haven't had any
problem with it for over a year, just seemed weird that we are both having
the same problem all of a sudden. I've done my file maintenance etc., so
hoping this resolves the issue.

Debbie,

I just clicked on the Online Troubleshooter and that made Legacy crash in
the same way as the Master Locations List. I wonder if it is something about
the Internet connection? What browser do you use?

As I said in my original message I left the laptop overnight and tried again
today to see if the problem was still there, so closing it down doesn't seem
to be the answer.

If I don't open the Master Locations List the software is working fine.

I think this is obviously a query for support - I just wondered before I
contacted them whether anybody had experienced the same problem. There seems
to be a wealth of experience on this list.

Thanks anyway for the assistance, much appreciated.

Jennifer,

OK, The message that comes up would normally say something like "xx
Error at 0x56786754 etc". Any chance of repeating the problem and sending
this information?

Meanwhile, I have often found that in this situation closing down the
computer, leaving it for 5 minutes, and restarting can resolve this sort of
problem.

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Crashing when using Master Locations List

2009-02-25 Thread Sherry/Support
I'm going to have you do a complete uninstall and then reinstall. After you
uninstall Legacy, with Windows Explorer look in the C:\Legacy folder or
whichever folder you had Legacy installed in. Within this folder you will
find several files remaining that you will need to delete. Carefully
delete the following files with the file extension of:

.usr (defined as "USR File")
.exe (defined as "Application")
.ocx (defined as "ActiveX Control")
Legacy.exe.local (defined as "LOCAL file")

If the last two files aren't there, don't worry about them.

DO NOT delete any of the folders like the Data folder, Picture Folder or Web
Folder as these folders hold your data and you don't want to accidentally
delete your family file or pictures. Don't delete any reports you may have
saved to the main Legacy folder nor should you delete the Legacy*.lic file.
All the other files should be deleted. You'll need to reset your
preferences after you reinstall.

Download the latest build of the Standard Edition from our website by
clicking on the Download menu button.

**When you reinstall, make sure that all other programs are shut down and
your anti-virus and anti-spyware software is disabled.**

Thanks for using Legacy.

[LegacyUG] Alternate name error during check/repair ???

2009-02-25 Thread Bob Bashford

Version 7.0.0.86 ... Build Date 12/31/2008 ... Windows XP

None of these had AKAs before and they don't now ... I checked a half
dozen which do have AKAs and they look ok.

A rerun of the check/repair came up clean ... a refresh of the
treefinder looks ok ... counts of total individuals, familes, surnames
are correct.

Any thoughts? (A bit spooky, so I'm putting off that merge for now.)

Thanks

Bob

2009-02-25 Thread ronald ferguson

Bob,

I have seen odd ones like this before. I don't know why they crop up, but it
must somehow be related to the files sorting themselves out. In any event I
have never found that it has caused any problems, and I just rerun, as you have
done, until I get a clean report, and then forget about it.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Crashing when using Master Locations List

2009-02-25 Thread Jennifer Brown

Sherry,

Thanks for the advice, but I'm afraid it hasn't completely solved the
problem for me. The software is still closing down if I try to use the map
feature. If I don't switch on the map in the Master locations list it works,
but with the map on the software shuts down.

I'm going to have you do a complete uninstall and then reinstall. After
you

uninstall Legacy, with Windows Explorer look in the C:\Legacy folder or
whichever folder you had Legacy installed in. Within this folder you
will

find several files remaining that you will need to delete. Carefully
delete the following files with the file extension of:

.usr (defined as "USR File")
.exe (defined as "Application")
.ocx (defined as "ActiveX Control")
Legacy.exe.local (defined as "LOCAL file")

If the last two files aren't there, don't worry about them.

DO NOT delete any of the folders like the Data folder, Picture Folder or
Web

Folder as these folders hold your data and you don't want to accidentally
delete your family file or pictures. Don't delete any reports you may
have
saved to the main Legacy folder nor should you delete the Legacy*.lic
file.

To clarify what happens -

I click on the drop down arrow to open the locations list. It opens fine
and

the map displays. I then click on a location and the locations list box
'fades' - I don't know exactly how to describe it. Instead of displaying
the

locations box with the map I get a very faint box with no map. No error
messages. It sits for a couple of seconds and then I get a Windows message
that Legacy has stopped working and Windows will check for a solution.
Legacy shuts down and I have to restart the programme.

What *exactly* do mean mean by crashing? Do you get any error messages and
if so what what are the error numbers and messages?

btw.On a public site it is not a good idea to put your address at the end

Jennifer,

If you have installed Visual Earth in order to get the 3D effect, I would try
uninstalling it. If it resolves the problem then it could be reinstalled. I
have it installed myself and it is not causing me a problem, but one never
knows.

2009-02-25 Thread ronald ferguson

Mary,

I take it that you fist hignlighted the text which you wished to copy.

Note also that it must be in a text format eg. a '.txt' extension or similar
(and not PDF or jpg etc).

I see that it is also in Polish. Some of their characters cannot be printed in
Legacy - I think it is Rich who can be more specific about which, and the
effects of copy/paste in these circumstances.

this might be the problem - because I just highlighted it, copied it and
tried to paste it

Mary,

I take it that you fist hignlighted the text which you wished to copy.

Note also that it must be in a text format eg. a '.txt' extension or similar

I see that it is also in Polish. Some of their characters cannot be printed
in Legacy - I think it is Rich who can be more specific about which, and the

RE: [LegacyUG] copy and pase

2009-02-25 Thread ronald ferguson

Therein lies a problem. For some of the characters to print the utf8 coding
needs to be recognised, but Legacy does not thus 'Józefa' will appear as it has
here and not as in Polish. I do not know of, and I don't think there is a
solution to this.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Crashing when using Master Locations List

2009-02-25 Thread Barb Weed

Subject: [LegacyUG] Legacy Crashing when using Master Locations List

I have Legacy version 7.0.0.86 installed on the C
drive of two laptops. I keep my family file on a memory stick and use it
between
the two computers. My main laptop runs Windows Vista and the other Windows
XP.

The day before yesterday the Windows XP laptop
crashed a couple of times while my file was open. The family file seems to be
fine, but when I started using it on the Vista machine yesterday Legacy crashed
every time I tried to click on a location in the Master locations
list.

I tried it again today (in case the computer
fairies fixed it for me overnight) and it is doing the same thing. I see that
in
the Legacy folder on the C drive there are files named location.usr
and mapping.usr. I'm wondering if these have anything to do with it? Maybe
I'm making updates on one PC that aren't being transferred to the
other?

Has anybody else had problems using the software on
more than one computer? Or maybe it's because I'm running Vista and XP? Or
maybe
because of the crash?

Any thoughts/suggestions gratefully received! I had
a quick search on the Legacy site but couldn't find anything but maybe it's one
to log with support.

Thanks,

[LegacyUG] Should I delete and reenter???

2009-02-25 Thread Momalot66
Somehow, my Uncle John Richard WILLIAMS ended up married to his sister in
law Jovita JORDAN. Her actual husband was his brother, Charles Robert
WILLIAMS. The children got all mixed up, too. Charles Robert WILLIAMS just
disappeared. Should I just delete the individuals and re-enter? I'm lost???
Is
there a better way? Not sure how this happened.
