RE: [LegacyUG] Unlinking and then deleting a family
June, Unlink the woman from her husband, you do not mention any children, so I am assuming that there were none. You can now safely delete, one at a time, her ancestors siblings etc. If there are too many for individual deletions go to the grandparents and use Advanced Tagging to select their descedants and spouses (right click on the 3 tag boxes in Family View). In ToolsAdvanced Deleting delete all with that tag number. If there are children then it is different and you will need to come back telling us whether they are the children of the husband and an unknown woman, or what, whether you wish to retain them attached to him, or do you wish to delete them. [LegacyUG] source formatting on Family Group Report
I have a question regarding source formatting on the Family Group Report. I'm using the Sourcewriter Family Group Sheet-Privately Held template. I have source detail and a comment on the detail. Why is there a semi-colon inserted at the beginning of the detail text and the beginning of the comment text? There is already a semi-colon at the end of the source citation. (I'm not real sure about this semi-colon, either.) If I skip a line at the beginning of the detail, the semi-colon appears on a line by itself. If I don't skip a line, a line is skipped in the report anyway, and another semi-colon appears at the beginning of the detail. I know that one of the solutions is to use the Basic Source writer, but the Sourcewriter feature is one of the reasons I am a Legacy user. I am a relative newbie when it comes to citing sources and there are so many options that I don't want to have to stop and plow through EE every time I cite a new kind of source. I also don't want to use the override feature, unless that is my only option. But I don't think I should have to use the override, as this is not an unusual source citation. It seems to me that this might be a small bug. Can anyone else duplicate this? If not, I'll completely delete the source and re-enter it to see what happens. Thanks for your help. There is already a semi-colon at the end of the source citation. (I'm not real sure about this semi-colon, either.) Dede, There are many templates in which Legacy inserts punctuation for you. Yes, it inserts a semi-colon before the detail text or comments, probably based upon a slightly inaccurate reading of the Family Group Sheet model in Evidence Explained, p. 108. Or are you saying you are getting two semi-colons in a row? (I'm only getting one). I myself do not use this template, and am still searching for a usable replacement that does not require an override, for another reason. The EE model on p. 108 is clearly based upon a Collection, not an individual FGS. The template assumes that the author/compiler of the group sheet and the current owner are one and the same person. It does not allow me to indicate that Jane Doe compiled/authored a group sheet in 1994 that Sam Smith owns in 2009. If anyone has found a workable solution for this problem (without using the Basic Source system or an override), please let me know!!! I have determined that I am getting two because I have not put any information in the Comments section of the template. Thanks, Connie Connie, Before doing a System Restore I would try Last Known Good Configuration - it's in the same place as the Safe Mode - I don't know where that is on your PC but on mine it's f8 on start up (I think!). Whether either would solve a problem which is clearly a Legacy problem I very much doubt, but who knows? Since the preview/print routines are working with your other programs it would seem that it is a Legacy problem rather than a system one and re installing Legacy might be the only answer. Before doing so I would delete all the usr files relating to the reports. It may be something else, I just don't know, but if so it may be necessary to delete the lot before reinstalling. Support may be able to advise ont his. Sorry, it's not much help, but it's a new one for me. [LegacyUG] conversion between old sources and sourcewriter
I've been traveling for some time and therefore have not followed Legacy events closely. I just rejoined the list. Has the promised tool to convert old source entries to sourcewriter now become available and how well does it work? Ron, I inadvertently happened upon Last Known Good Configuration before trying System Restore (neither worked). And I tried to uninstall Legacy, but that isn't possible either. [LegacyUG] Unable to Uninstall; Missing Install.log file
If the person who was having problems a week or two ago with the missing install.log file is still reading the list, he may be interested to know I think I have duplicated his problem. As part of my quest to rectify my unable to preview or print problem, I tried to uninstall Legacy. I used Add/Remove programs. At first I thought it had just neglected to remove the shortcut from the desktop, but then I realized the whole program was still there and functional...so, for awhile I thought I had lost my mind or, at least, forgot to actually press the remove program button. Later, when I tried to uninstall again (both from Add/Remove and from the Uninstall Legacy 7.0 button in the Legacy directory), I got the message could not open install.log file. So I searched for it, including in hidden files, and it was not there. I did retrieve it, but only because I had a backup made to Mozy several days ago. I put it back in the Legacy folder, ran Add/Remove programs again, and the only thing Uninstall removed (apparently) was the install.log file. I then downloaded and reinstalled over the top, but I still do not have the ability to print or preview a report. I will this to Support (tomorrow, as I'm burned out today).
