RE: [LegacyUG] Change Surname Spelling

2009-03-29 Thread Branko and Chris
Hi Dennis,

Thanks for your info. I would have thought that if one part of legacy
(Surname list) treats these characters, lets say correctly, we could assume
that the rest should also.

The surnames are Croatian and yes they actually begin with those characters.
Translated into English the "Š" character would sound like "Sh". If I
changed them to "Sh" naturally, one would never find them via most search
engines, therein lies the problem.

Will send a bug report to Legacy.

Many Thanks

2009-03-29 Thread ronald ferguson

Gavin,

I'm not sure if this will do what you want, but it does find the descendants
but not in a chart or report format.

Use advanced tagging to tag the descendants, say tag 1, then search for tag 1
using Search>Find>Detailed Search click create and on the new screen select
Print and customise as required.

As the subject says I want to print a descendant report (or chart) with

[LegacyUG] Error 508

2009-03-29 Thread John Roose
When trying to backup today I can not - and get Error 508. It is not in the
Legacy tech Error list.

I backed up the way I have for years. So, I then did all file maintenance;
same Error 508. I then tried to backup another (non-Legacy) file and had no
problem.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Re: [LegacyUG] The effect of Master Source Overrides

2009-03-29 Thread Ward Walker
Connie, you have answered my question about why use SourceWriter+Override
instead of Basic: i.e., in order to take advantage of the subsequent
citation form. I see that the template called "add a generic source here" is
not really all that generic/simple, but it appears that one might as well
use _any_ template, when the intention is to override with your own
free-form text.

By 'fudge' a template, as opposed to using the override feature, I meant
what has been previously discussed about using the fields of the template
creatively, not necessarily entering what the prompts suggest. Where this
breaks down is for certain fields that have automatic text or punctuation
that cannot be removed/rewritten. As Jenny says, it would be nice to be able
to use most of a template and only override certain fields. (At the expense
of more complexity and potential confusion.)

It strikes me that using the Detail Override fields would have the same
problem as the ongoing bug with normal subsequent citations. Every instance
of that master source, after the first one, will be treated as subsequent,
regardless of which details are changing in each detailed citation. There is
no mechanism to spell out all of the details when they differ significantly
from the previous full citation.

I think of a template-driven citation as consisting of 4 groupings of
fields:

 - master fields that always appear
 - master fields that disappear on subsequent citations
 - detail fields that always appear
 - detail fields that disappear on subsequent citations

It's that last one that's the rub. These fields currently disappear on any
subsequent citation of the master source. I want them to reappear in certain
cases, as we discussed a few weeks ago. (The rules for such cases will be
complicated.)

Connie, are you now seeing a change in this aspect, compared to what you saw
in December?

(As for the italics, the Cntl+i method appears to work.)

Ward,

It appears that you have a response similar to the one I received
yesterday. I have not yet taken the time to fully comprehend it, or
experimented to figure out what it means "in practice." (Your post below
is more understandable to me than what I received from Support).

Off the top of my head, I am left wondering: if I cannot find a
SourceWriter template that produces the desired results without an
override, and I don't want to use the Basic format (primarily because it
will not generate a Subsequent Citation), what is the alternative? Is
there a free-form "create your own source template" option hidden in
Legacy that allows you to have a Master Source, a Subsequent Citation, and
varying Details that I have missed? What would be the purpose/in what
circumstances would one use a Master Source override, since the Details
will always "disappear."? How _do_ you fudge a template?

Since receiving the e-mail from Support yesterday, I'm convinced there is
something going on here that I simply don't understand.

(A few minutes later): Okay, I think I have it. My test family is now
working more like it should for subsequent citations on the narrative
descendant reports, perhaps thanks at least in part to the latest version;
I'm not sure why that wasn't on the "we fixed it" list. You have to make
your override of the Master Source on the Details Override screen, and
check the little boxes "Use this customized footnote on reports" and "Use
this customized source citation on reports." Duh. It is not as intuitive
as Legacy usually is, and is more work than I would like, but I think I
can live with it.

Woo Hoo!!!

The one thing I don't see is a way to italicize certain words on the more
free-form Details Override screen

Connie, you and I have discussed this one on list (in fact,
you brought it up): When an override is used in the Master
source portion of the SourceWriter template, no Detail
source fields show up in the citation. Well, it turns out
that this is exactly as designed! When you type anything
into the override box on the master citation, that text is
intended, by design, to be the _complete_ citation (if you
also click the checkbox underneath). Then on the Detail
portion of the SourceWriter form, if you type anything into
the equivalent override box, it will take precedence over
the Master override and form the complete citation.

I had incorrectly assumed that the master override would
only affect the master 'fields' of the final
citation, and likewise for the

[LegacyUG] Change Surname Spelling

2009-03-29 Thread Branko and Chris

Hi,

Some years ago I was being clever and used Special Characters as a starting
character in a surname and after countless years have only now as I'm
re-building the web pages I realised that the web Names List excludes every
surname starting with one of these characters, the funny thing is that the
Surname list contains every one of groups starting with those special
characters, hmmm.

I also note that in the Names List none of my "Z" surnames are listed. Again
there's a mixture of special character and the real Z itself, but nothing
displayed.

Is there a way that surnames can be changed on mass as I now have some 200
surnames to change or is there another solution? My preference would be not
to change the surnames but haven't a solution for the web names list.

Or is this a Legacy feature that somebody has already uncovered.

Many Thanks

I believe I have previously expressed a desire for something like a
"create your own template" to cater for all those occasions when the
Legacy ones really don't serve.

It's interesting that this thread has arisen now, because only a couple
of days ago I ran into this problem of not being able (satisfactorily)
to override the Master Source. I was wanting to delete a line from the
Master Source (by override) and use the corresponding field in Source
Details to write some other information. Can't be done! Annoying
because it would have saved me having to override the Source Details
every time I wanted to cite that particular type of Source.

I simply don't see the reasoning behind overriding the Master rendering
the Details unusable.
