[LegacyUG] GEDCOM in wrong extension

2009-08-05 Thread Pat Jones
I recently wanted to send a GEDCOM and when it was set up and
ready to go, I noticed that the icon and the extension was that
of FTM. I tried to make them become a Legacy icon and extension
w/o success. Can anyone solve this problem for me? I did send
the GEDCOM anyway and it seemed to come out fine - this time , at
least. No doubt it is a setting that I'm overlooking but I've
searched everywhere I can think of.

[LegacyUG] Printing all children from different "women"

2009-08-05 Thread Barbara
Hi, First off I want to thank each of you who have helped me in the past. I
don't always recognize you for your great insights.

Is there a way to print all women and all of the children a man had? This
relative had several children - some with one wife and two "mistresses",
"alliances" and "illigitimate children" as they were called then.

I'm sure this has been addressed before, but I'm not sure how to look it up.

[LegacyUG] Burial Address

2009-08-05 Thread GeoSci
Anyone found a way to search for those with a particular burial
address? (Recorded within the + following Burial Location which a
city-county-state-country type record) I would like a list of all
buried in three cemeteries relatively close to each other so that I
might visit for photos - but I cannot remember which dozen or so
people are there (out of over 4700 in the data base). Sure would be
handy to be able to do this.
Thanks

Re: [LegacyUG] GEDCOM in wrong extension

2009-08-05 Thread Dale Warehime

Pat:

The problem is not with your file. It is with your setup on your computer.
My guess is the you have installed FTM after you installed Legacy.

Open Windows Explorer
   Click on Tools>Folder Options
On the File Types Tab select GED under Extensions
In small blue type you should see Details for 'GED' Extension
   Click on Change
In the popup that opens click on Legacy (you may have to Browser
for Legacy.exe in you C:/Legacy Folder.

Now click on the same file and it magically appears as a Legacy file.

If you still have a problem get back to the list and I'm sure someone will
give you additional advice.

If you are referring to View>Master Lists> Event> That only brings up a

I believe what Keith (and I ) are looking for is a report that lists every

I think I remember from another post from a long time ago that every
time you run FTM it "reclaims" ownership of the .ged file extension. The
file itself is fine.

Then select the addresses you are interested in (if you hold down
when you select you can select more than one). Finally, click the Show

Keith,

Did you place the cemetery name and address in the "Burial
Location" field? If so, open that window up and click on the
"Address List" button. When the next window opens, select the
cemetery for which you want your listing and click on the "Show List"
button. You can also print the listing of everyone you have in the
cemetery if you wish.

[LegacyUG] GEDCOM in wrong extension

2009-08-05 Thread Pat Jones
Thanks all for the suggestions; however I had already done just
as Dale had suggested. I did it again making certain that I had
completed every step Dale suggested and then ran a new GEDCOM but
still got the FTM extension. I went to My Computer, down to
Legacy folder and to the GEDCOM folder to look at the new GEDCOM.
Wish I could copy and paste something into this message but this
is what it looks like and says, the icon is a treetrunk with
branches, William Marshall.ged, under "Type" is says FTW GEDCOM
File, then today's date. In reply to Dennis, I do have FTM on my
computer but haven't used it for months; however, looking at the
previous GEDCOMS in the Legacy file going back for nearly a year,
they all say FTW GEDCOM File, so FTM must capture and hold Legacy
hostage unless the whole FTM program is deleted

I go to the individual information screen. Click on the + and bring up the
burial address.
Then click on address list (3rd button from the top on the right) which
brings up the master event address list.
[CE directed you how to reach this list a different way.]

But then you must
click on 'show list' the 2nd button from the bottom on the right)

This will provide a list of all individuals that are associated with that
address.

CE, I use Legacy Deluxe, I do not see any tab called Master.

If you are referring to View>Master Lists> Event> That only brings up a
listing of events, and does not list the persons who have that event in
their record.
I believe what Keith (and I ) are looking for is a report that lists every
who has data in the burial address or burial notes or burial picture event

[LegacyUG] Hiding people in Legacy charting

2009-08-05 Thread Wayne Boian
I am preparing some charts to take to a upcoming family reunion.
There are some family members who had a first marriage that ended in divorce
with no children. They had children with their second marriage. Is there a way
to keep the first marriage from printing in the Legacy Charts? It just seems to
take up extra space in some charts that are already 3 to 4 pages long.

Thanks

That's just because your computer has "linked" or "associated" GEDCOM

In a similar way, my computer describes all .jpg files as "Photosuite

That would certainly stop it. If you remove it you can't execute it and
thus it can never reclaim the association. Unless the uninstall leaves
an artifact around like a service which reclaims the association.

A search of the archives or google might turn up more on this. I only
have a vague recollection of this being discussed before. This is more
of an FTM/Windows issue, hence some might consider it off-topic.

FTM has only grabbed what used to be called the File Association.

I believe Dale's instructions were correct. You should NOT have to
create another GEDCOM to see the change. As soon as you make the change
that Dale has outlined, Windows should display anything with an
extension of .ged as a Legacy file. It really only affects which program
gets executed when you double click on the file in Explorer. I have mine
associated with a text editor.

It doesn't really reclaim it but yes it does do funny things to it if
you then open it in FTM - it changes it to its proprietary FTW file.
When you go to an export (and I am doing this from memory in that I long
ago took FTM off my computer) you have a choice between an FTM gedcom
and a regular gedcom. You of course want the regular gedcom unless you
are porting directly to another FTM.

It's another one of my large gripes with FTM and something we've
answered time and time again on several forums I belong to.

Barbara,

What you are asking seems to nmean can you in a lineage or descendant report
include children who are neither from the same lineage nor are descendants. To
which the answer is "no".

However if they were linked to the parent of the line in question through
adoption or (I think) as "step" then they would be included.

Note that if you make this change then in some other reports they will be shown

Re: [LegacyUG] GEDCOM in wrong extension

2009-08-05 Thread 1familytree

Pat and listers

For Gedcom extensions.

Go to your windows control Panel> Default Programs> Associate File Types.

In the Left column you will see all the file suffix extensions that are on
your computer OR are handled by any program you may have installed on your
computer.

Go down to .ged
and click / highlight that item.

In the upper right corner click on change program.

In the pop up window select Legacy. If legacy doesn't show then browse to
C:Legacy Folder and select the legacy.exe program, which usually resides in
the first level within the legacy folder. depending on your version, (mine
is in Legacy7) your folder may say Legacy or Legacy

That will "associate" the .ged files to be opened by Legacy and use the
Legacy ICON.

Re: [LegacyUG] Burial Address

2009-08-05 Thread 1familytree

Thank you for being more specific, as everyone should be when listing steps.

But that only solves the problem if Keith listed the cemetery name and
address within the Burial Place-Burial address fields, AND did not use the
same exact name in the Burial Location field.

My own personal problem is that I have added an image link to the Burial
Location-Burial Picture field. and there is no way to report on that field.

Go to:

There is no tab called Master.

If you are referring to View>Master Lists> Event> That only brings up a

I believe what Keith (and I ) are looking for is a report that lists
every who has data in the burial address or burial notes or burial

Anyone found a way to search for those with a particular burial
address? (Recorded within the + following Burial Location which a
city-county-state-country type record) I would like a list of all
buried in three cemeteries relatively close to each other so that I
might visit for photos - but I cannot remember which dozen or so
people are there (out of over 4700 in the data base). Sure would be
handy to be able to do this.

RE: [LegacyUG] Magically Appearing Unknown Spouses and Parents

2009-08-05 Thread Jan Roberts
I know this query first appeared a while back, but here are my thoughts:
If you have a child but no parents and then find the name of one parent you
would 'Add a parent '. This would in effect 'create' the parent of the
opposite sex - automatically identified as Unknown by Legacy. If you later
find the other parent you already have the parent couple, but not the name
of the mother / father - so now you need to manually change Unknown to the
newly discovered name and then 'Link to an existing person'. No need to
turn either option off.

Cheers

Ron,

But there are both options: (1) Add a mother or father to the child, and
(2) Add a daughter (in my case) to the parents. With both options, a pop up
screen appears asking whether you want to add a new person, or link to an
existing person.

If the only way to prevent "unknown" people I've never created from
appearing is to always add/link children to the parents, then the other
option should be turned off!

Yes. It shouldn't be too difficult. Something like...

UPDATE tblAR, tblIR SET tblIR.IDARBuried=[tblAR]![IDAR] WHERE
((tblIR.IDARBuried=0) AND (tblIR.IDIR<>0) AND (tblIR.Tag1=1) AND
(tblAR.AddrName="XYZ Cemetery"))

... sets the Burial Address to XYZ Cemetery for anyone on Tag #1 who
does not already have a Burial Address. This was done quick & dirty so
it may require more testing.

The usual caveat re backing up your database before doing anything in
Access applies. ;-)

RE: [LegacyUG] Printing all children from different "women"

2009-08-05 Thread CE Wood
Lineage is one particular person's lineage, so 1/2 siblings will not show,
whether in View or Report.

In Descendant view and Report, descendants are listed under their parents.
I think the only time you see "1/2" is in the Family View.

You can see a list of someone's siblings by clicking the Siblings icon at
the bottom of the Husb or Wife box while you are in Family View. That takes
you to Sibling List. Check the box "Show half brothers and sister" if you
want them to show. I don't think you can print this list, but someone more
knowledgeable may know if Tagging or Search can do what you want.

I'm sure this has been addressed before, but I'm not sure how to look it up.

Re: [LegacyUG] Burial Address

2009-08-05 Thread GeoSci
THANK YOU EVERYONE! I have used parts of many of the suggestions and
made a list for each cemetery - now I know what to look for! Also
discovered that I have made some errors and several locations were
duplicated - so I was able to correct and consolidate them (doesn't
that seem to always happen - try to do one thing and end up doing
10!). Great list - Great Group (as always!)

Thanks again!
